Augusta Christian Schools has been blessed by our Lord and Savior to be a lighthouse for many students and their families for fifty-three years. We consider it a privilege to minister to children spiritually, academically, socially and physically. What a blessing it is to be in God’s presence as we teach, learn, play and uplift His name.

Augusta Christian Schools has experienced a renewed spirit of expectation and excitement this school year. Dr. David Piccolo joined our family as Head of Augusta Christian Schools in August of this year. His vision for Augusta Christian Schools is one of advancement and community involvement. Touching lives is what ACS is all about. The students and teachers of ACS have participated in a variety of service projects ranging from ministering to a child with cancer to painting the homes of the underprivileged in an economically disadvantaged community.

Exciting new plans are in place for a Coffee Café on the Augusta Christian Schools’ campus. This café will serve many purposes. Students, teachers, and families will be able to purchase a delicious cup of coffee, tea or juice while visiting with their friends or attending Bible studies and prayer groups. Small groups such as Advanced Placement classes will have a special room designed specifically for study and reflection. Our economic teachers will utilize the café to teach our students about the inner workings of business and the many facets of making it a successful venture. Additionally, ACS will open a new Medical Health/Science Academy in the fall of 2012. Community health professionals are working closely with our administration in planning for this challenging program.

Students who are interested in the medical field will be able to select science based curriculum that will help prepare them for a

profession in medicine. What a great time it is to be an ACS Lion!

Augusta Christian Schools is also pleased to announce our new K-3 program beginning in the fall of 2011! Parents will also be able to take advantage of our early morning child care and holiday care as well. In addition, ACS will offer summer camps this year that will be open to our students as well as the community. Praise God for our school and the many opportunities we have to honor our Lord at ACS. Our challenging academic program prepares students to enter competitive colleges and universities. Honors, Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment classes challenge students to achieve excellence. Beta, Spanish and French Clubs provide students with opportunities to serve the world while they enjoy club activities.

Students in the Choral program of our Fine Arts Department consistently participate in the Georgia Music Educators competitions while our Art program attends competitions each year in an effort to broaden students’ exposure and appreciation for various expressions of art. The Band program offers musical instruction with outstanding performances on the Middle and High School levels. The ACS Quiz Bowl team participates in SCISA as well as public school competitions each school year. The ACS cheerleaders have achieved the prestigious “National Champions” designation many times over the past four years. Fall athletic programs include football, swimming, tennis, cross country, and volleyball. These activities keep our student athletes busy with practice schedules and games that bring enjoyment for the players and spectators alike. Winter and spring athletics include basketball, baseball, golf, men’s tennis, track, soccer, softball and wrestling! Their schedules are demanding, but our students find that through Christ, they can do all things. Our students are engaged in challenging curriculum that will prepare them to serve Jesus Christ as Lord after graduation from high school no matter what profession God leads them to pursue.

Georgia Special Needs Scholarship

The Georgia Special Needs Scholarship provides eligible special needs students with the opportunity to attend an approved private school. We are extremely blessed to have accepted several new students into our Talent Development Program!

Augusta Christian School’s Talent Development Program is specifically designed for students with a learning disability and/or Attention Deficit Disorder. Classes are offered in grades one through twelve, depending upon availability. Class size ranges from five to fourteen students, allowing the school to provide individualized attention through a multi-sensory approach to learning. God is So Good, Isn’t He?

How is your assessment of winter this year?

For elementary, where there were signs in classrooms which stated, “Pray for snow!” We considered this winter to be fairly successful. Two snow storms in less than a month this winter are “heaven on earth” for many students and adults in elementary. However, we have also been thinking ahead to a warmer time as you will see in the next several paragraphs.

This summer, Augusta Christian has set up several camps for students who will be entering first through sixth grade next school year. On May 25, 26, and 27 there will be a basketball camp for 2nd and 3rd grade boys and girls in the ACS gym from 9 am to 11 am. From May 31 to June 3, a 4th and 5th grade basketball camp for boys will be held in the ACS gym from 1 to 4 pm daily.

In the month of June ACS has scheduled the following camps and activities: June 6 – 10 will include day camps on Monday (“Kids Games Through History,” $15, continuous games for three hours!), Wednesday (“Making Bread and Yeast Rolls,” $18, everyone goes home with fresh baked goodies!) and Friday (“Cookie Fest,” $18, everyone one goes home with a dozen cookies they made themselves!). Each of these will be from 9:45 am until 12:45 pm in the elementary hallway and gym.

Also that same week, June 6-10, from 1 pm to 3 pm, the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art instructors will hold an Art Camp for ages 5 to 12 in the elementary hallway. Classes (no more than 10 per class) will be by age group and students will rotate completing drawing, sculpture, and 3D applications. On June 13-17, ACS will hold a Theater Camp from 10 am to 1 pm in the elementary hallway with a culminating stage presentation at the Fury’s Ferry campus stage on Friday evening at 6:30 pm. Students are responsible for their own (simple) costumes but will be writing parts of the play, indicating who they would want to portray, and making sets during the week.

ACS is also happy to announce that the nationally acclaimed “Camp Invention” science and engineering camp for elementary students will be held June 20 through 24 daily from 9 am to 3:30 pm in the elementary hallway.

Students will be in grade level groups and have hands-on activities throughout the week. Fun and learning is combined in one camp. You should have already received a flyer about Camp Invention. The final activity for June will be an elementary cheerleading camp on June 27– 29 held here at ACS. Before June arrives, however, elementary will be learning things in their classrooms, going on field trips throughout the spring by grade levels, attending chapels, participating in ACSI Spelling Bees and ACSI Math Olympics, taking Stanford Achievement Tests, enjoying a Yo-Yo specialist, celebrating Spring Break, playing at Field Days by grade level, May 12 and 13, and getting ready for year end activities. K5 Graduation is May 17, Fifth Grade Moving Up Ceremony is May 19 as is the last school day for K4 students, and Honor’s Program is May 20 for 1st– 4th grades.

Wow, we’ll be busy this spring, and we hope your children will come, enjoy, and learn from the activities planned at ACS this summer. Before closing we have a couple of other announcements for next year as well. In an attempt to assist families further, ACS will begin before school child care for elementary students next school year beginning at 6:15 am. In addition to this, ACS is also opening a K3 class for three mornings per week next year.

School Counseling Updates as we Close the School Year

Thank you for choosing Augusta Christian Schools (ACS) for your children. I can attest ACS offers something that many schools cannot offer, the heart of Jesus. We have seen God work in our students’ lives and the school many times and in many ways. The Lord is always beside us and leading us as we go throughout our days at ACS. Dr. Piccolo began this school year sharing visions for ACS with the school board and faculty. In a recent chapel, Dr. Bartlett and Dr. Piccolo spoke concerning Dreams and Visions. During his presentation, Dr. Bartlett addressed our student body by stating, “God had His man (Dr. Piccolo) with a dream and a vision to take Augusta Christian to a higher level that we have never imagined.” Dr. Piccolo used his time to share his visions for ACS with our students.

One of Dr. Piccolo’s visions for the high school is providing dual enrollment classes. This year, I have worked cooperatively with a college and our faculty in hopes of providing dual credit classes for qualifying students during the 2011-2012 school year. These classes will provide a unique opportunity for high school students who meet pre-requisite requirements to earn both high school and college credits simultaneously. This program stems from a partnership with Truett-McConnell College (TMC) located in Cleveland, Georgia. TMC is a private Christian school offering a variety of four year degrees to students. All of the details pertaining to dual enrollment are currently being arranged, however, we already have teachers and classes approved. The classes that may be offered to our high school students include United States History I & II, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, Psychology and on-line Sociology. If a student takes all of these courses, it would add up to 18 semester hours of college credit – this equals one semester of college-level coursework!

ACS is also looking forward to providing the Christian College Fair (CCF) in 2011. Although it is in the fall of 2011, planning the CCF is already underway. The 2011 CCF will be held on Thursday, October 13 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Warren Baptist Church in Simmons Hall. What could be a better way for students and parents in our community to learn about colleges than attending a CCF? In addition meeting with official college personnel, families who attend will be given college planning resources and also have the opportunity to attend a financial aid seminar.

Please come to the CCF expecting to learn about Christian college opportunities for your students. Many times college officials are more than happy to arrange a one-on-one meeting with an interested student and parents/guardians. Before you plan to go to a college fair it is a good idea to learn more about the colleges that will be in attendance. If you are interested in a particular school, you may call that college’s admissions office personally. When you call, ask if someone from the institution will attend the Augusta CCF. Once you determine representative who will attend, you may ask the person if they have time to meet with you individually. By arranging a personal meeting, you are creating a unique opportunity to learn more about scholarships, programs, and other important facts. Also, this type of meeting allows representatives to place faces with names for future phone calls and contacts.

Working at ACS has definitely been one of the highlights in my career. Some say that all good things must come to an end, and this a true statement in my life. My husband’s job involved a transfer to Nashville, as an Attorney for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. After this school year, I plan to pack up and move to be with him. I will miss my daily interactions with ACS students, parents/guardians and staff as I conclude my ninth year. Thank you for being a blessing to me and providing a workplace I consider an extension of my family.

Athletics

God continues to work mightily in our athletic program at ACS. He has added several coaches to our staff of over 25 that continue to build kingdom leaders through the sports arena. ACS offers 19 varsity-level sports for boys and girls and we expect over 2/3 of our student body to participate this year on some level of competition, ranging from middle school bteams through the varsity level.

Our teams have competed well thus far, including winning national, region, and tournament championships.

Our athletic facilities have seen some significant improvements including: New gym scoreboards for basketball, volleyball, and wrestling.

A state-of-the-art weather warning system for our outdoor teams that is being installed this spring.

We have several other projects on our “to do” list that we will continue to work towards in the future.

Our booster clubs continue to grow and provide our programs with the “extras” that will enhance our teams. These funds provide extra equipment, help defray travel expenses for special trips, help to enhance our coaches with clinics, and close the gap for those things that our budget does not cover.

We are continuing to try and better serve our ACS community by providing better communication through Edline and continuing to improve our website. We are also expanding our summer camp program to include cheerleading, basketball, soccer, baseball, and speed development. These camps are not only for a variety of ACS student age-levels, but are also available to those in the community who would like to participate.

As I borrow a quote from Bruce Lane, former ACS Athletic Director, ”God is good all the time, and all the time God is good,” the 2010-11 school year has flown by. God continues to show His goodness and mercy in the area of giving and support.* As of this writing, our 2010-11 Vision Fund is at $120,000 (up $20,000 from this same time last year). The Fall Festival brought in over $20,000, our annual Coupon Book Sale made $42,000 and the annual Auction made $30,000. Gifts given for other projects such as the building fund, tuition assistance, Field House, Fine Arts, annual Golf Tournament and the Georgia Goal Scholarship Program totaled well over $220,000. ACS has been awarded several grants from local and State foundations this past year. These funds will go for Smart Boards, security cameras, security lighting, a state of the art Lightning Prediction Warning System and a new Color Scanner. Our association with Millennium Business Group (credit card processing) has been a true blessing in the area of partnership with merchants in and around the CSRA. ACS has over 35 merchants on this program, and it continues to bring in $5000-$6000 a year in free dollars to the school. We will continue to reach out to businesses, churches and other schools to share the mission and vision of ACS. Matthew 19:26 says ”with man it is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” The past and present have been very good, but we believe the best is yet to come! WE are AC! Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program Thanks to all of who participated in redirecting a portion of your Georgia State tax to the GOAL Scholarship Program. By taking part in this program we are able to increase our tuition assistance. Anyone who pays Georgia state taxes may participate by redirecting up to $1,000 if you file single or up to $2,500 if you file jointly. An Idea, A Dream, A Plan, A Reality

When Dr. David Piccolo recently asked me to do a joint chapel with him on the topic, “Visions and Dreams,” I was delighted for the opportunity to speak on a subject that fascinated me so intently. Now, well on my way of completing ten years at ACS, I have been a part, if not the instigator, of a number of dreams that have become reality.

I remember well my first interview with the ACS Board of Trustees and the many questions they asked me. When they were satisfied after the traditional round of necessary and important questions concerning my spiritual life, they began the barrage of the more philosophical and academic questions. Among the many were, “should we invite you to come as interim head and should you accept, what would your vision be for the future of the school?” I immediately assured the Board that I was very familiar with ACS’s strong, Biblically based philosophy and assured them that I would render leadership well in keeping with this tradition.

Firmly believing that first impressions are very important, I told the board that one of the first things I would like to do was to change the appearance of the front campus.

The second question I was asked was what did I think about ACS pursuing SACS accreditation. That excited me because I knew it would permit the school a great step forward in academic viability. These were just two of the major topics that

made up the agenda of that lengthy, but wonderful, first meeting Ten years have nearly passed, so let’s take a look at where God has brought us up to the present. In the year of our Lord 2001, our Baston Road campus had very little, if any, curb appeal. Nearly one hundred very large pine trees almost hid our buildings. The road through campus was much in need of repair and there was very little parking space.

Cutting a deal (not an easy job) with then the very capable Business Manager, Neil Stevens, and getting Board approval, the front Campus “face Lift” began. Mr. Stevens was good at “making deals” and soon he had a tree removal company with heavy equipment invading our campus to remove one hundred big pine trees. The morning sunshine finally revealed buildings that had rarely been seen. The immediate transformation was stunning.

When the tree removal equipment was gone, phase two began and another completely different body of equipment arrived on campus. The old roadway was plowed under, the space was greatly enlarged for expanded parking, and as this work proceeded, the look of our front campus was taking on a beautiful new appearance. What a difference having an expanded road and parking area, freshly resurfaced, made. There was still lots of work to be done to complete this phase of campus improvement. Shrubs of a variety of species, shapes and sizes, from time to time were planted in front of the buildings. Uniformed types, shapes and sizes needed to be purchased and planted, and I personally selected the new shrubs and supervised the nurserymen in the planting. Eureka! The task was completed and what a “shot in the arm” it gave our ACS family!

We were now ready for the next big challenge: SACS Accreditation!

The major emphasis of my first ACS opening of school workshop was SACS accreditation. Among its many, many requirements were

faculty preparation, curriculum and facilities. These were just a few of the areas that would need special attention. It was daunting and challenging to say the least. More information and initial preparation continued that year as we anticipated a new headmaster and new leadership to get the project into full operation in the fall of 2002.

Committees began the arduous task of dissecting each standard.

Committees worked many hours each week throughout to prepare the lengthy, detailed report for presentation to our evaluation team.

The report of the visiting evaluators was positive, but as is tradition, numbers of recommendations were made which had to be responded to for the following five years before the next visit. The prize of SACS Accreditation was a great accomplishment.

After the five year progress reports were completed the second phase of the process started all over again. Fortunately, ACSI had developed a dual accreditation process with SACS making it possible to complete one project for reaffirmation which would satisfy requirements for both accreditation agencies. With the approval of ACSI and SACS, school-wide literacy was the topic chosen tor our second reaffirmation project. Once committees were formed, work began on another huge project. Mr. Robert Hodges, ACSI Southeastern Regional Associate Director, became our liaison for the accrediting agencies. He made periodic visits to ACS evaluating progress and giving helpful suggestions. His visits were not only very encouraging, but very helpful.

After two years of developing our project report we were ready for another evaluation team to ”storm” our campus. Because of our conscientious efforts, coupled with the special help from Mr. Hodges, and above all, by God’s grace once (continued on page 10)

again we were victorious. For the first time in my many years of working with accrediting agencies, our exit interview with the evaluators was very, very different. Instead of the usual great numbers of recommendations, Mr. Hodges left us with only one recommendation, “Just continue to do what you have been doing.” TO GOD BE THE GLORY!!

As the years continued to move ahead, through the generosity of very dedicated parents numbers of other dreams finally became reality. Probably the most significant one in the history of ACS was the construction of the new, state of the art, Field House. Only a very few dedicated, devoted, loving and faithful parents made it happen. Many people say it is the finest facility of its kind in Columbia County.

Large gifts from other generous and caring parents made possible two wonderful memorial projects. The Middle and High School Libraries were refurbished and memorialized for ACS student, Jenna Cockrell, and the very beautiful ACS garden was made possible by generous donations in memory of ACS student, Christen Renfro.

Other “dream projects” made possible from special friends have been a much needed network of sidewalks connecting all areas of the campus. Most notable of these was the transformation of what was a rainy season “mud hole” between the field house and the football stadium. The beautiful sidewalk now connecting these two areas is a school favorite. The purchase of a final property on Phillips Drive made it possible for ACS to own all the property on one side of Phillips Drive to the next connecting street. To complete this campus unit, we were given permission by Columbia County to make a complete new roadway for the back entrance to our campus. This made possible a much better access to stadium and modular classroom parking The jewel in the crown of all of our “dream projects” was a face lift to the three major Baston Road buildings. The interiors of each were completely refurbished with complete new office areas, new carpeting and painting.

The elegant new digital sign, (a gift from PAAC) at the school entrance with its attractive landscaping, greets our parents, students, faculty and friends each day as they enter these hallowed grounds for another day of spiritual training and academic and extra-curricular challenge.

God has done above and beyond all that we cold ask or think during these ten years. The future, under the leadership of the new Head of School, Dr. David Piccolo, with his professional preparation and experience, his future vision, and his spiritual depth and sensitivity, makes certain that the best days for ACS are still ahead as he leads us to a higher level.

ACS Students Participate in Spelling Bee ACS participated in the Association of Christian Schools International Spelling Bee recently at Shannon Forest Christian School in Greenville, SC. Seven schools from the southeast district participated in the Bee. Twenty-four Augusta Christian students in grades 1-8 competed in the Spelling Bee. Maddie Sparks placed in the Spell-Off for fifth through eighth graders and represented Augusta Christian at the Regional Spelling Bee in Atlanta, Georgia.

Student Honors ACS Students Earn AP Scholar Awards Six students at Augusta Christian Schools (ACS) have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams. The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP) provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on AP Exams. About 18 percent of the 1.8 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award.

The College Board recognizes levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams. At ACS Clayton Perry qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. One student qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. This student is Raymond Hoefs. Four students qualified for the AP Scholar Award. The designation of AP Scholar is granted to students who complete three or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher. The AP Scholars are Kadie Cheeks, Brant Herzwurm, Evan Vintson and Jenna West.

Through 30 different college-level courses and exams, AP provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to earn college credit or advanced placement and stand out in the college admissions process. Each exam is developed by a committee of college and university faculty and AP teachers, ensuring that exams are aligned with the same high standards expected by college faculty at some of the nation’s leading liberal arts and research institutions. AP is accepted by more than 3,600 college and universities worldwide for college credit, advanced placement, or both on the basis of successful AP Exam grades. This includes more than 90 percent of four-year institutions in the United States. Research consistently shows that AP students who score a 3 or higher on AP Exams (based on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest) typically experience greater academic success in college and higher graduation rates than students who do not participate in AP.

ACS Students Win Quiz Bowl Augusta Christian Schools’ Quiz Bowl Team competed in the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) Regional Quiz Bowl Meet on November 10 in Orangeburg, SC. The team won the competition and competed at the SCISA State Quiz Bowl Meet on November 23 where they placed 3rd overall.

Honors (Continued) STAR Student and Teacher ACS senior, Stephanie Cipollone, (left) is Augusta Christian’s STAR Student. The STAR Student honor is given to the senior with the highest SAT score. Stephanie chose Mr. Jack Hook (right) as her STAR Teacher. Both were recognized recently at a reception hosted by the Harlem Women’s Club. Mr. Hook teaches Stephanie AP Calculus and AP Statistics. Beyond her academic success, Stephanie is involved in cross country, track, EPS Striders, student council, Beta Club and she is a volunteer math tutor. Stephanie plans to study biostatistics at the University of Georgia or Georgia Tech.

ACS Student Serves as Congressional Washington, D.C.—On Thursday, February 10, 2011, U.S. Representative Paul Broun, M.D. (GA-10) welcomed Augusta Christian Schools student, Wesley Colston, to Washington, D.C. Congressman Broun sponsored Colston, of Appling, Georgia, to serve in the Spring 2011 Congressional Page Program. Pages are students, who in their junior year of high school, are hired to serve as support staff for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Wesley is the son of Wendell and Sandy Colston.

ACS Students Invited to Participate in Duke TIP Augusta Christian Schools identified 14 seventh grade students who met the qualifications for The Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP). Students qualify for the program by scoring at the 95th percentile or higher on the complete battery, or an accepted section, of the annual Stanford Achievement Test. Through Duke TIP’s 7th Grade Talent Search program, which focuses on the identification, recognition, and support of high-ability students, qualifying seventh grade students take college entrance exams alongside high school students. A large number of seventh grade Talent Search participants earn scores that many high school seniors would envy. TIP allows Augusta Christian, and other area schools, determine gifted children. Duke TIP also provides resources to nurture the development of these exceptionally bright youngsters.
