Please kindly adhere to the following guidelines when covering Lynn University athletics during the 2009-10 academic year.

ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT EXCERPT FROM

The role of the athletic program is to support the overall University mission. Intercollegiate competition has been an integral part of higher education in America for more than a century. The University endorses the concept of “Athletics as Education” described in the policy statement adopted by the American Council on Education in 1984, which cites key contributions of athletics to the individual, the institution, and society as a whole, as follows: “Among these contribtuions are the development of discipline, teamwork and self-confidence of individuals who particpate, the improvment and substance of institutional reputations and morale, and the heightening of visibility that aids in recruitment of students and financial contributions.” The basic premise underlying these very positive contributions is that athletics is, and must continue to be, an important part of the educational process.

Since 1996, more than 2,500 student-athletes have turned in grade-point averages of 3.0 or better. On the average, 106 LU student-athletes produce GPA’s of 3.0 or better each semester Lynn University has earned 97 Academic/Scholar All-America honors in its history

Head Coach S

eason after season, Lynn University men's and women's tennis coach Mike Perez has shown he is able to do one thing: produce champions. Now in his 21st season in Boca Raton, the man with seven national titles to his credit has shown consistency in not only producing champions on the tennis courts, but also in the classroom. Academically, Perez's teams rank at or near the top of the LU Athletic Department's grade point average listing year after year.

21ST SEASON

Mike Perez Head Coach

Perez's tennis programs have become synonymous with success with over 700 career wins. Boasting an overall record of 734-195 (.790), Perez has notched 420 victories with the women and 314 on the men's side. Under his tutelage, the number of honors has been downright staggering as 49 different All-America players have donned the Blue and White for a total of 125 separate honors. Reaching the NCAA finals with the women’s squad for the second consecutive season and seventh time overall in 2009, the Fighting Knights kicked off the season on a 28-match winning-streak. Perez’s Blue and White squad took down a pair of top-ranked teams, Armstrong Atlantic State and BYU-Hawai’i, en route to setting the program record for wins. Going undefeated in league play and winning a record ninth Sunshine State Conference championship, Perez was recognized for his efforts by being named SSC Coach of the Year an unprecedented eighth time and tabbed South Region Coach of the Year. On the men’s side, the 2009 Knights put together their best Sunshine State Conference season with its first undefeated league season. Although bowing out in the NCAA quarterfinals, the Blue and White finished the season ranked third in the country while senior Julien Carsuzaa was named SSC Player of the Year, South Region and National Senior Player of the Year while breaking the school records for both singles and doubles victories. The 2008 Fighting Knights women’s squad reached the NCAA finals for the sixth time before bowing out to Armstrong Atlantic State. Lynn won 26 matches while sweeping through Sunshine State Conference player for yet another undefeated season and an eighth league championship. In 2007, Perez brought the Fighting Knights to new heights by setting program-bests in victories for the men with 24 and a then-best 25 with the women. The men's squad earned its first national title with a 5-1 victory over defending champions Valdosta State, the school that knocked off the Knights in the title match the year before. Winning the Sunshine State Conference title on the men's and women's side in 2007, Lynn became the first school to win back-to-back titles with both teams in league history. Perez was named SSC Coach of the Year for both squads, earning him a record sixth time with the women and the second consecutive with the men. Honors abounded for Perez in 2007 as he picked up ITA Southeast Region Coach of the Year accolades with the men and women. He was also named the Division II National Coach of the Year for the men, the first time he has won the award in the NCAA.

During the 2006 fall season, Lynn swept the ITA Southeast Region Championships on both sides. The doubles pair of Dennis Riegraf and Julien Carsuzaa also won the ITA ‘Super Bowl' of Small College Tennis, a first for Perez, and won their first round match at the ITA National Indoor Championships against the defending Division I champions from Pepperdine University. Carsuzaa would again win the Division II doubles title two years later as a senior in 2008, teaming with sophomore Alessandro Sarra to achieve the feat. Along with the women's program's six national titles, Perez also boasts the third best all-time record in NCAA Division II postseason tournament play for active schools with a 56-12 (.823) record. Always clutch on the big stage, his teams have made 13 consecutive championship appearances and 12 final fours since becoming a D-II institution in the 1997 season. Only traditional powerhouses Armstrong Atlantic and BYU-Hawaii have better winning percentages, but both have lost National Titles at the hands of Perez's Fighting Knights. Also impressive was Perez's inclusion as Top Coach on the First 25 Years on the SSC's Women's Tennis Silver Anniversary Team. Lynn represented a leaguebest five players, including Top Player Monika Mastalirova, despite only being in the conference for eight years.

Head Coach On the men's side, Perez's squads have reached the postseason 11 times since beginning NCAA play in 1997. The Knights' 25-10 (.714) overall championship record is tied for sixth best all-time and the Blue and White are 16-3 in the past four seasons, reaching the final match both 2006 and 2007. An accomplished high school and collegiate baseball player in Arizona, Perez moved to Florida in 1988 and joined the LU athletics family as an assistant tennis coach. One season later he assumed the reigns of both the men's and women's program, putting into motion what has proved to be a tradition of success, excellence and domination. His first women's national title came in 1993 as the Knights captured the NAIA National Championship. The team would win it all again at the NAIA level in 1995 and 1996 before the school decided to move to the NCAA and eventually the Sunshine State Conference. The move up to the NCAA did little to slow down the success of the women's program as the Knights took home the hardware in 1997 and 1998, both times at the expense of Armstrong Atlantic. Perez won four national titles in succession, a feat normally reserved for coaching legends. Lynn added another national title in 2001 with a 53 victory over BYU-Hawaii, the Seasiders' first Division II loss after a 103-match winning streak. As a Division II program, the Knights also have four of runner-up finishes and 12 semifinals appearances.

For his efforts on the women's side, the 1987 University of Arizona political science graduate was named NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1993, 1995 and 1996. The Sunshine State Conference bestowed the same honor upon him in 1998, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and most recently the 2008 season. The Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame named him their Coach of the Year in 2002, while the NAIA named him Coach of the Decade for the 90's. Perez's coaching acumen isn't just confined to the women's program as his men's team has been a player on the national scene as well. The 1993 NAIA District 25 Coach of the Year, Perez's teams finished in the national top 10 every season from 1993-1997. Their success didn't stop once LU decided to make the move to the NCAA ranks, as the Knights have finished in the Top-25 every season. Michael Steven Perez was born on Sept. 17, 1965 in Newburgh, N.Y. He has been married to the former Melissa Nace since July of 1998. They are the proud parents of Madeline Elizabeth who was born on Sept. 13, 2001. The Perez family currently resides in Lake Worth. Away from tennis, Perez is always working to lower his handicap around the greens and also enjoys maintaining his garden and engaging in lively political discussions.

Facilities he epicenter of the Fighting Knights Athletics Department, the Count & Countess de Hoernle Sports and Cultural Center sits in the heart of the Lynn University campus. Completed in 1993, the center is the home court for the Lynn University volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball programs. Lynn’s 18 National Championship banners hang proudly from its rafters.

T

Housing four team locker rooms and one officials locker room, two athletic training rooms and laundry facilities, the de Hoernle Center also contains offices for all of Lynn’s coaches and administrators. During volleyball and basketball games fans can relax in the retractable chairback seating on one side or sit close to the teams on the retractable bleachers. The combined seating capacity is 1,000. The front lobby is home to the Michael & Julie Chadwick Wall of National Champions, a space that has plaques recognizing the Fighting Knights National Championship teams, and six trophy cases which hold the many NAIA and NCAA individual and team honors of Lynn’s 11 programs. The de Hoernle Center is not just used for athletics; the gym floor is converted at the start of each academic year for Orientation and at each year's conclusion for Commencement. A new addition was welcomed into lobby of the de Hoernle Center in 2008, the Athletic Hall of Fame. Eighteen former student-athletes and administrators are honored on the wall for their accomplishments while with the Blue and White. The first basketball game held on the floor came on Dec. 28, 1993, as the LU women downed Michigan-Dearborn 99-72. The Knights men’s team played its first game on the floor two days later, besting Findlay 103-93 on Dec. 30, 1993. The first-ever Lynn volleyball game at de Hoernle was on Sept. 12, 1996. Home to the Fighting Knights’ outdoor sports, the McCusker Sports Complex is the site of the baseball, softball, soccer and tennis teams at Lynn University and has been the host of Sunshine State Conference and NCAA National and Regional Tournaments. The only home Lynn soccer has ever known, the McCusker Sports Complex Field has seen its share of shining moments in Fighting Knights soccer history. With its plush Bermuda grass playing surface, the field is nestled on the southwest corner of Lynn’s campus. Six national championship teams have played on the soccer field formerly known as “the graveyard.” Team benches and accommodations for the media, game staging personnel and administrators are located on one side of the field with two sets of covered bleachers and a concession stand on the other side. From 1996 to 1998, the field was the place to be to witness NCAA Division II National Finals. The Lynn women took part in the 1996 NCAA championship game while the Fighting Knights men took on Cal State-Bakersfield in the 1997 title tilt. The Lynn women captured the 1998 final on the field, downing Sonoma State 3-1 on Dec. 6, 1998. Recently the men’s soccer team defeated Lander 8-0 on Nov. 10, 2005 in the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals, the second largest margin of victory in the program’s illustrious post-season history. Lynn’s baseball field is located on the southeast corner of campus, sharing a border with Military Trail and Potomac Road. Long home runs can be seen crossing mid-day traffic as the Blue and White play all of their games during the day. Recent facelifts to the field include a new scoreboard in right field with the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championship banner, new Bermuda grass infield and outfield and a crushed brick warning track. Dimensions are 315-right field, 355-right center, 405-center field, 365-left center and 325-left field. The softball field is located adjacent to the baseball field and share outfield bleachers. This field saw a program record 88 home runs sail over its fences in 2005, which are 190 down the lines and 220 to straightaway center field. The softball field received a face lift in 2006 with the possibility of a new stadium in the near future. Boasting a combined seven national championships and 12 Sunshine State Conference titles, Lynn University's men's and women's tennis programs will usher in a new era beginning in 2009 with the Perper Tennis Complex. The state-of-the-art million-dollar complex contains a total of six courts, covered chair-back stadium seating, an electronic scoreboard and is the first outdoor lighted facility on the Lynn campus. Although not on situated on campus, the Lynn men’s and women’s golf team take advantage of some of the best courses that Boca Raton has to offer . The women’s program practices at three local golf clubs, Boca Lago Country Club (www.bocalago.com), Boca Woods Country Club (www.southfloridacountryclub.com) and Boca Delray Country Club (www.bocadelray.net) while the men’s squad calls both Ocean Breeze Golf & Country Club (www.oceanbreezegolf.com) and Boca Country Club (www.bocaresort.com/golf) home.

Sunshine State Conference Founded in March of 1975, the Sunshine State Conference has risen from a single-sport organization to become the NCAA Division II “Conference of Champions.” Started as a basketball conference, The SSC has since grown steadily in sports played, membership and national prominence. A weekly check of national rankings in nearly any Division II sport proves the point, as SSC member institutions consistently find themselves ranked amongst the nation’s elite. Now with nine full members, the SSC is the proud owner of some 71 NCAA Division II National Championships in baseball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. The Orlando-based league recently added to its already full trophy case with Nova Southeastern University capturing its first women’s golf title and Lynn University claiming its first baseball national championship. The SSC currently crowns regular-season champions in volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball. The league also administers season-ending tournaments in men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s rowing.
