Teen Program is in Full Swing!
In This Issue:
By Sarah Hanuka, Director of Lifelong Learning At the start of this school year we enhanced our Jewish Experience for Teens program (JET) for students in grades 8 -12. The enhanced program meets on Sunday mornings—during Religious School hours—and combines both madrichim (teen classroom aides) as well as the Jewish learning components of our traditional Hebrew High. Teens have the option of choosing to participate in the Jewish learning session by itself or combine it with the madrichim session. Currently we have 25 students signed up for JET. This includes 20 teens who are participating in the enhanced learning/madrichim program and five teens who have chosen to only participate in the Jewish learning session. Our sessions are taught by Rabbi Ohriner, Rabbi Alexander, Jill Rosenberg, and myself. We alternate teaching sessions using different curricula to engage the interest of all students. Our curriculum includes text study, current events, social action, and leadership development. To further enrich our teens’ experience, we introduced a variety of unique and fun programs including; Krav Maga, Musar (Jewish) Yoga, and a Sushi making workshop. (Shown to the left)
Teens learn how to make sushi. Just one of the unique and fun programs that are a part of JET.
Our commitment to the teen community is evident in our hosting a teen Shabbat with BBYO on January 6th and a mini-mitzvah day for social action with USY on January 15th. We are thrilled that the attendance at each of these community programs was more than 100 teens!
In an effort to add more programs after regular school hours, we hired Rahav Boussi-Gross as our new Teen Program Coordinator. Thanks to her work, teens can look forward to a leadership workshop, an after Purim Karaoke party, a haunted house at the Shushan County Fair, and a trip to the Jewish Contemporary Museum. We are very proud of our teens’ participation and we are committed to continuing to offer them the high-quality programming they have come to expect from CBD. Over the summer, we will be working on increasing our marketing efforts to attract teens not just from CBD but from the entire South Bay community. Additionally, we continue to build strong relationships with other youth groups and teen programs. In doing so we hope to provide a broader array of teen activities and more opportunities for them to learn and socialize with one another.
