How Screen Printing Designs on Shirts are Done Do you want to learn how to make your own t-shirt designs? It’s easy when you know how to do screen printing. Printing designs on shirt is done by using a design screen to smear ink colors onto the t-shirt fabric. It may look complicated at first but once you know the basic techniques and have all your materials ready, you can basically print designs on as many shirts as you want. You may even consider making sign printing as a hobby or as a part time job. First, you need to ready your materials. Have your design ready, make sure that it is large enough to be read or to be distinguished; take note of the colors that you will be using for this design. You need an embroidery hoop big enough to hold your design; there are different sizes of embroidery hoops, you can check this out at your local crafts store. You also need a gauze that fits the size of your design, printing ink or fabric pain, latex paint, water color paints, small sponge, design stencils (If you don’t have a design yet) and a plain t-shirt. Draw or print your chosen design on a plain piece of paper. Prepare your printing screen by stretching the gauze on the embroidery hoop; stretch this until it is as tight as the top of a drum. Trace your design on to the gauze on the embroidery hoop. With latex paint, brush the areas on the traced design that you don’t want to print on. Allow your gauze screen to completely dry, this may take up to 5 hours to totally dry. Test your design out and fix mistakes easily by applying more latex paint. Remember that you want to cover all the negative space so use a small brush to make very detailed corrections. After letting the gauze to dry completely, remove it from the embroidery hoop. Place the t-shirt on a flat surface. Place a cardboard inside the shirt to prevent ink from smearing to other areas of the shirt as you print. Place your design gauze against the shirt, with a small brush; apply a small amount of paint. Completely blot the design out and remove the gauze screen. Place your printed shirt in a flat surface to dry. Allow the design to dry overnight and wash the shirt before wearing it. You can use the design gauze over and over again or make more design templates of your own.
