FAME THE MUSICAL THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG ANGELINA BALLERINA THE MOUSICAL FLASH MOB! What’s On Spring/Summer 2014

OPENING UP A WORLD OF ENTERTAINMENT... We are getting ready for a fantastic new season here at the Civic Theatre with an exciting selection of entertainment for you to choose from as we head towards the spring and summer months. In this, the centenary year of WW1, we welcome some special productions to commemorate this landmark occasion, starting with a wonderful evening of music in prospect with a special WW1 Last Night at The Proms, packed with favourite songs. In September make sure you catch Private Peaceful, a moving but uplifting story by Michael Morpurgo, award-winning author of War Horse. And there is a very special production to look forward to later in the autumn, a stage adaptation of Pat Barker’s Regeneration from the Touring Consortium Theatre Company who recently brought us the successful Brassed Off. We have some plays that are full of laughter and fun to raise your spirits, including a visit from Warwick Davis and The Reduced Height Theatre Company with the hilarious farce See How They Run, which is receiving great reviews - don’t miss it! Direct from the West End, we welcome The Play That Goes Wrong where Fawlty Towers meets Noises Off.

As always, we have high quality entertainment for young people and their families. Look out for Angelina Ballerina The Mousical as it pirouettes into town. For younger children there is a delightful stage adaptation of the children’s book What the Ladybird Heard, and it’s Sooty’s birthday so don’t miss the party with The Sooty Show. Whilst there is nothing to compare with the special magic of live theatre, there are so many other ways to get more involved with the Civic Theatre. You could join our Friends and young people can also sign up for our ArtsSpark Membership Scheme. Aspiring young actors and dancers can also join our brilliant ArtsSpark Youth Theatre and Dance. Don't forget to visit our exhibition in Borough Road foyer telling the story of the theatre. Music Hall and Variety played a large part in our history and we are celebrating this with a continuing programme strand which includes This Is Music Hall - The Best of British Variety. We are extremely grateful for the loyal support you continue to give to the theatre and to our exciting restoration plans, Happy theatregoing! With warmest wishes Lynda Winstanley Director

CIVIC AT CENTRAL HALL Some of our performances take place in Central Hall at the Dolphin Centre. The Dolphin Centre is at Horsemarket, Darlington, DL1 5RP, in the town centre. Central Hall is on the second floor and is fully accessible. Level access is via Bull Wynd and by means of a lift to the second floor.

Like nothing you’ve ever seen before! This wonderfully funny and much loved farce is brought to life on stage once again – this time with a difference. It still features hilarious comic situations involving mistaken identity, doors and vicars, set in the village of Merton-cum-Middlewick, but the comedy will be heightened by the fact that the cast are all under four feet tall! See How They Run is the debut theatre tour of Warwick Davis and his Reduced Height Theatre Company. Warwick is the most successful short actor in Britain with a career spanning over three decades. He's best known for his roles in Willow, Star Wars, the Harry Potter films and most recently on our TV screens in Life’s Too Short, Doctor Who and An Idiot Abroad 3. So for a memorable evening of theatre that won’t be short of laughs, book your tickets now! I was laughing uncontrollably... absolutely brilliant Keith Chegwin Go see it. You’ll love it Adam Hills

EMILY PENN: SAILING THE LINE

Tue 27 May 7.30pm Tickets* £11, Discounts £10 RGS-IBG members £9 Emily Penn is an oceans advocate, skipper and artist; a graduate of Cambridge University and director of global organisation Pangaea Explorations. Following her voyage across the Pacific Ocean, Emily will share her insights on how remote island communities are adapting to their changing world, the transition to a money-based society, and the opportunities and challenges this brings. Emily sailed to the Line Islands of Kiribati by the only means possible: a sailing cargo ship trading western supplies for coconuts. Emily relates her experiences to the current course of wider society; how tackling global issues – such as waste, energy, food and water – on an island scale, can help us see solutions to problems in our own society.

IOLANTHE

Tue 1 July 7.30pm A delightful story built around a fairy who was banished from Fairy Land for life for marrying a mortal: Gilbert’s incisive witty political satire is as relevant today as it was when it was first performed in 1882, and many consider the music among the best of Sullivan’s work. In this ‘fairy opera’ the House of Lords is lampooned as a bastion of ineffective, privileged dimwits! The political party system and other institutions also come in for a dose of satire.

THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE

Wed 2 July 7.30pm, Thu 3 July 2pm & 7.30pm

This wonderful jolly romp complete with a brave(ish!) band of swash buckling pirates, a completely dotty Major General, his beautiful unwed daughters and a bumbling bunch of hopeless but hilarious British policemen has all the elements for outstanding entertainment. Probably the best loved of all the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire.

THE MIKADO

Fri 4 July 7.30pm, Sat 5 July 2.30pm & 7.30pm One of the most popular of the Savoy operas. Set in the fictitious Japanese town of Titipu, this hilarious story exudes big, colourful characters and well known songs that you will be humming long after you have returned home. A thoroughly entertaining and deliciously over the top evening Daily Express *****

The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multiaward winning BLOOD BROTHERS. Bill Kenwright’s production recently surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone.
