As seen within the underground press movement and specifically the publication “Space City!,” the social space defined as the “underground,” which acts as the binary partner of the mainstream, has a life cycle that begins with a desire for an alternative and ends due its self-reflexive awareness its position of opposition, limiting its ability to change. Nonetheless, the publication provided an alternative cartography of the culture during a pivotal political time when minority groups began to advocate for their rights.
