C A P T U R By Dan Lassiter Winter cabin fever is coming to a close! Springtime in Colorado is a time for outdoor family fun .. .the first picnic of the season, a family reunion, a wedding, baby's first steps, or any other precious moments you would want to capture. The best way to capture the memory of all those precious moments is through the use of many new portable home recorders available on the market today. Recent miniaturization of electronics has brought with it a wave of very compact and easily transportable video cameras and recorders, some weighing only a few pounds. Since there are several different tape formats for video cameras and each has its advantages and disadvantages, the format you choose should be the one that best fills all your needs.

There are currently three popular video tape formats, VHS, BETA and the most recently introduced 8mm type. VHS is by far the most popular format in the Fort Collins area, as a trip to almost any video movie rental establishment will prove. Several local rental facilities deal exclusively with VHS movies, so if you plan on renting tapes a great deal, VHS is probably your best choice. (BETA is more popular in some parts of the country, so this may not be an important deciding factor for you.) Many VHS cameras currently available look similar to super 8mm home movie cameras except a recorder pack must usually be carried in order to do any recording. There are some VHS "all in one" or camcorder systems available which have the recorder built right into the camera. The drawback to those on the market now is that they don't record on a full size tape, but rather a 20 minute insert which has to be adapted to fit in a

standard home VHS recorder for playback. The industry has been buzzing with talk of a full size VHS camcorder for several years but none are available at this time. Advantages of the VHS format also include long recording times of up to eight hours on a single tape. Many current systems also allow you to "edit" or play back what you've recorded and view it through a camera's viewfinder. This allows you to make sure you got just what you wanted on tape while "out on the field." The Betacam offers owners of home BETA recorders a compact camcorder system which uses full-size tapes. Up to 4 Y2 hours of recording can be done on a single tape. A disadvantage of the Betacam system is that it does not allow for editing or reviewing through the camera viewfinder like other systems do.

The new 8mm video format camcorders offer the best of both worlds. The camera, which includes a built-in recorder, is very compact and lightweight. The 8mm video cassette allows up to two hours of taping and is about the same size as the standard audio cassette. Its less that half the size of a BETA tape, and about a quarter the size of a VHS tape. Most 8mm camcorders offer reviewing and editing capability via the camera's viewfinder which can be very helpful. 8mm tapes can also be dubbed very effectively onto home VHS and BETA recorders offering even more editing capability. Whichever format is right for you, video movies can really help preserve those exciting vacations, parties and other important events. Your video photography dealer should be able to recommend a format that is right for your particular needs. Good luck and happy taping.

Q&A Question: Is the man-tailored look still in for Spring? Gone are the form-hiding shapes of tal/'s manly adrogenous mood The spring/summer collections focus on the female form ... they are pretty, feminine, and alluring, showing waist, hips and any other curves ignored in seasons past.

Question: Is "dressing for success" still limited to neutral skirt suits? Women are tired of dressing like their male counterparts! There are now many more stylish options to looking professional in the work environment. This season "tailored" doesn't mean "stuffy." New colors, prints, softer more feminine styling, and wonderful accessories give a wardrobe lots more interesting possibilities. Skirt length should be at the knee or below (no minis, please). Jackets are longer and work over the shorter straight skirt or the longer, midcalf skirt. Duster coats with matching pant or skirt are also taking the limelight. Colors span the color wheel - neutrals, icy pastels, or fun brights (as long as they oren 't neon). Prints are taking command this spring and as long as they aren't outrageous, they are perfect to add fun to a corporate look. Irs time to feel confident in expressing ourselves as individuals and women, and stop wearing those rigid cookie-cutter business uniforms. Send your questions to: Lydia's SlYLE Scotch Pines Village 2601 S. Lemay Avenue Fort Collins, CO 80525 We will try to print as many as possible.
