Monthly Megabite STEM Lessons In Brunswick On February 5th, one of the Institute's STEM Specialist traveled to James Solomon Russell Middle School in Brunswick County to observe a STEM lesson. The lesson was a collaboration of eleven teachers, including three VA STEM CoNNECT participants: Martha Trusty, Shawnrica James, and Ruth Thomas. There were over seventy students participating during the lesson which took place in the school’s gymnasium. STEM Specialist, Stephanie Playton, commented, “It was so great to see teachers from across disciplines working together as part of this experience. There were not only history, science, mathematics and English teachers all working together as part of this lesson, but additional support teachers too.” The lesson began with the story of Humpty Dumpty and a dramatic egg drop into a bucket. After engaging the students, science teachers helped make connections to energy and Humpty’s fall. Next the students made suggestions on ways that Humpty could have had a safe landing off the wall he fell from. The history of bungee jumping was discussed and then the students were given their design challenge.

was very well organized! Each table had the group’s technology equipment and a folder that included rubrics and lesson materials. It was particularly enjoyable to listen to the groups determine their roles and get started!”, said Stephanie Playton. As the students worked in groups, they used an online resource, ITSI-SU, to collect and record their data using probeware. This lesson was part of a larger STEM unit plan that the VA STEM CoNNECT participants will be sharing at a summit in May at Longwood University. The Institute looks forward to hearing about VA STEM CoNNECT participants’ experiences integrating inquiry based STEM units into their classrooms. Additional summits will be held for participants from other workshops ITTIP conducted in the summer of 2013. See page 3 of this newsletter for dates.
