Ingredients

Directions:

For the cookies: • 3/4 cup granulated sugar • 4 ounces butter, melted • 2 eggs • 1/4 cup milk • 1 teaspoon anise extract • 12.5 ounces flour • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon salt • For the icing: • 1 1/2 cups confectioner’s sugar • 2 tablespoons melted butter • 3 tablespoons water • 1 1/2 teaspoons anise extract • colored sprinkles

Heat the oven to 325 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment. In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the butter, sugar, eggs, anise extract, and milk until blended. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet until just blended. Using your hands, grab about a tablespoon of the dough and roll it into a ball (the dough will be a little sticky/wet, but this is the best way to get a clean, round shape). Place them onto the prepared baking sheet, a few inches apart. Bake for about 12 minutes (start checking them at 10) until lightly golden on the bottom, but not overly browned. Let cookies cool completely on a wire rack before icing. Make the icing: Whisk together the confectioner’s sugar, water, melted butter, and anise. Dip each cookie into the icing, letting the excess drip off. Shake some multicolored sprinkles over the freshly iced cookie.

Cesnica

(Serbian Christmas Bread) Ingredients: Time: 2 1/2 hours 4 1/2 cups bread flour 1 cup warm milk 1 cup warm water 1/2 ounce active yeast 2 tablespoons salt 1 tablespoon sugar 9 tablespoons melted butter 2 eggs

Directions: Stir together flour, salt, sugar, yeast, melted butter and one beaten egg in a mixing bowl. Pour warm milk and water into the flour mixture. Mix everything with the spoon. Transfer the dough to the counter and knead for about 10 minutes. Add more flour if needed. Form dough in the round shape (boule) and put in the lightly oiled large bowl to rise for 1 hour, to double its original size. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Remove the dough from the bowl and divide in two pieces, smaller should be for braiding. Make boule (round shape loaf) from the larger piece and transfer it to slightly oiled baking pan. Although the size of boule is smaller than the pan, don’t worry, it will rise and fill up the pan. Divide smaller piece of dough into 3 equal pieces. Roll out the pieces into strands and braid them using 3-braid method. It is easier than you think. Transfer braid to the top of boule to fit baking pan. Brush the bread with egg wash (beaten egg with a little bit of water) and cover with plastic wrap for 40 minutes. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Bake bread for 35 to 40 minutes. The bread should be golden brown on the top. When it is done, transfer the bread to a rack to cool down. And, pray to get the piece with the coin.

Directions: COMPRAMOS CARROS

Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Beat egg whites and cream of tartar in a large bowl with a mixer (using a whisk attachment if you have one) until soft peaks form. Add vanilla and salt and with the motor running on high speed, pour in 1 tablespoon of sugar and beat 10 to 15 seconds, repeat until all the sugar has been added. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and beat for another 15 seconds. The meringue should form stiff peaks when the whisk is lifted. Carefully fold in the white chocolate chips and 1/3 cup of peppermint candies. Spoon mixture into a gallon-sized freezer bag and snip off 1/2 an inch from one of the bottom corners. Twist the top shut. Pipe one-inch rounds onto prepared baking sheets, spacing them 1 inch apart. Sprinkle meringues with the remaining peppermint candies. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until they feel dry to the touch, switching the baking pans halfway through baking. Turn oven off, and open the door and let cookies stand for 10 minutes. Cool on pans. Place bittersweet chocolate chips in a small microwave proof bowl. Microwave on high for 1 minute and stir. If necessary, microwave them for an additional 30 seconds. Stir until all the chips are melted. Dip the bottoms of the meringues in the chocolate and place on waxed paper. Allow at least 1 hour to set. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
