About Parenting

Strive For Excellence

THE PERILOUS NATURE OF PARENTING TODAY It is becoming increasingly difficult to raise a child in today’s competitive society. The importance of bringing up a successful child has resulted in the rise of a new breed of all-rounders, also known as ‘superkids’. These children are brought up based on a highly regimented and well planned development program. As such, they have a huge advantage over other children. Being an all rounder is not a bonus these days. It is a necessity. Companies, prestigious schools and scholarship foundations now look at co-curricular activities and leadership experiences. Hence, there is a lot of responsibility placed on the parent to ensure that the child is brought up to be a successful person. We must always strive for excellence because with excellence comes status, wealth and a bright future.

1.1 Introduction

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Academic excellence is highly revered in Singapore. It is almost impossible to get anywhere in life without paper certification. It is very important that your child receives the best education possible. Tuition and extra classes are a must in order to gain your child an edge over his peers. Always start education early for best possible results. You can shut the mouths of those arrogant parents when your child’s academic performance outclasses theirs.

About Parenting

WELL READ Being well read and knowledgeable has been proven to improve decision making and confidence. Your well read child can wow those around him with his extensive general knowledge and his familiarity with current affairs. Start young by playing audio books to the child in the womb. Ideally, your child should be reading Shakespeare and Kafka by the age of eight.

MUSICALLY INCLINED Having an intelligent child is not enough these days. You need to broaden your child’s horizons and expose him to many non-academic activities. Music is highly regarded in Singapore and it will be a great addition to your child’s long list of talents. Just imagine handing our invitations to the concert performance of your six year old prodigy.

OUTSTANDING LEADER Leadership is key to success. At BRAG, we believe that leadership is not an inborn trait but something learned through experience and exposure. Start your child young. Give him responsibilities within the household. Encourage him to take initiative and instruct the less competent children in his playgroup. Alternatively, you could send him for leadership workshops and camps. With leadership inculcated in him, your child could very well be on his way to obtaining the position of CEO or prime minister.

1.1 Introduction

TALENTED SPORTSMEN Sports are a good source of both exercise and entertainment for your child. Sports are also beneficial for the development of social skills, strategic thinking discipline and perseverance. As with all skills, start your child young. Send him for classes a few times a week to ensure that he gets good fast. Aim for club or national youth experience before your child enters primary school. Sports excellence is a factor many prestigious educational institutions consider when admitting students.

About Parenting

CREATIVITY Creativity is not a trait only for people in creative fields. Everybody needs ideas and insights in order to move ahead. Creative thinking will often manifest in the way a creative child interacts with people. This ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules and patterns will get your child places.

REFINED BEHAVIOR A well behaved child reflects significantly on your ability as parents and managers. Being refined also sets a good first impression. Remember to always remind the child that ‘mian zi’ is very important and that they have to be at their uttermost best behavior in public scrutiny.

WELL GROOMED Like behavior, how a person dresses and carries himself is an indication of his upbringing and his personal values. Your child should always be taught that being well groomed and presentable is very important as appearance matters. Studies have shown that people who are attractive and well groomed command higher salaries.

An Investment

MAKE THE BEST OUT OF YOUR INVESTMENT Raising a child is making an investment. A well brought up and successful child will ensure that you will continue to have financial and emotional support after retirement. A child is also a reflection on your personal traits and skills. People will judge you based on the way your child behaves and performs. Hence, it is very important that you invest substantial time and resource into the development of the child such that his achievements lead people to see you in favorable light.

INVESTMENT PRINCIPLES Whether or not the investment will be successful depends on a series of calculated decisions on your part. The following are some principles that you should keep in mind when making the investment:

DIVERSIFY Never focus on developing only one aspect of your child. Multi-talented is the way to go. START EARLY It is never too early to send your child for classes. The earlier the better if it is economically viable. A head start will be advantageous for your child. DO YOUR RESEARCH Peter Lynch said “Never invest in an idea you can’t illustrate with a crayon.” Always do your research. Read up, talk to other parents and keep in touch with the latest developments that could affect your child. Try to stay ahead of the pack by trend spotting and looking at what parents in other countries are doing. PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT IS GOING ON WITH YOUR INVESTMENTS Always know what is going on in your child’s life. Talk to his coaches, teachers and even friends to find out how he is faring and how you can better develop him.

13

ASK FOR ADVICE BUT THINK FOR YOURSELF Never follow advice blindly. Every parent wants his child to be the best and some will resort to white lies and deceit to mislead other parents. Know how parenting politics work to prevent yourself from falling trap to misinformation. DISCIPLINE Stick to your plan and do not waver. Success takes time and effort. A packed, regimented schedule might be tiring but it will eventually pay off and you will reap the rewards of your child’s achievements and your investments.

Recognition

THE IMPORTANCE OF RECEIVING RECOGNITION FOR ACHIEVEMENT AND GREATNESS Recognition is a right, moral booster, and form of acknowledgment for both your child and you. A child who feels that his or her best efforts are valued by people is likely to continue these efforts. A person whos success as a parent is apparent tends to command a higher status and more respect that others in society.

TIPS TO EFFECTIVELY RECEIVE RECOGNITION DOCUMENT YOUR CHILD'S ACHIEVEMENTS If your child has been performing well both the child and you have every reason to be recognized for the achievements. Collect and keep a record of all certificates, medals and trophies your child has earned. B.R.A.G has a special custom designed badge service that allows for all these achievements to be displayed in a concise, ordered and visually attractive manner. BE BOLD AND VISIBLE If you seek to benefit form the recognition of your child's achievements, make them know to people around you. Do not feel awkward when you talk about your child's achievements and the role you played. Announce it in loud and clear manner. If you seek accolades you will have to make an effort to stand out and be visible. Make use of a combination of verbal(talking) and visual(display) methods. KNOW YOUR STUFF Talking about your child’s achievements indirectly tells people around that you are a successful and capable parent. However, if you seek to use it to an advantage, you must first know something about your target audience. Never try to gain an advantage when someone else in the room has a child that outperforms yours as you might end up red-faced when the person betters your claim. TARGET AUDIENCE Limiting your target audience limits the amount of recognition you receive. Talk about your child to anyone and everyone. If an opportunity presents itself, strike up conversation with random people. Revel in your glory.

NAVIGATING POLITICS

IF YOU'VE GOT IT, FLAUNT IT If you are absolutely certain that your child has achieved something that nobody else’s child has, go ahead and announce it to the world. Its an entitlement.

Strategies

BITE BACK WHEN ATTACKED Your child should excel in many different activities. If you happen to come across an arrogant parent whose child is performing better than yours in one area, bring up the ‘busy schedule’ of your child and then proceed to list his achievements in all the other areas.

B.R.A.G

24

Strive For Excellence

FISHING FOR INFORMATION Talk to the child before you talk to the parents. This only works on younger children who are more gullible and will readily reveal information that their parents might not.

BUILD YOUR SOCIAL CIRCLE Be nice or at least appear nice. Life is easier when you have more allies than enemies. Having a wide social circle means more access to information.

ALWAYS BE ON YOUR GUARD Jealous parents might try to undermine your efforts to make your child the best. This can come in the form of a seemingly innocuous ice-cream treat that could ruin your young sportsman. It could also come in the form of snide comments that can demoralize and hurt your child.

DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING Information is power but lots of information comes in the form of rumors. Only the naive believe everything they hear and make bad decisions as a result. When someone tells you something, ask yourself some questions. Does it make sense? Does the person stand to gain anything by misleading others?

HDB FLATS THE COMMUNAL PILLARS OF OUR NATION HDB flats are an iconic feature of Singapore. A recent study in 2012 showed that 82 percent of Singapore residents lived in HDB flats. Each public housing block is considered a vertical community, with common areas built into the design to promote social interaction. Void decks, a term unique to Singapore, refers to the first level which are often left devoid of housing units, hence the word “void. These open, sheltered spaces are intentionally left empty to provide convenient spaces for communal activities such as weddings, funerals, parties, bazaars and even as polling stations. With so much social interaction, amenities and activities going on, HDB blocks are idea spaces to acquire recognition for the achievements and greatness of your child.

ELEVATION & PROXIMITY OF BLOCKS Elevation & Proximity of blocks – HDB flats offer elevation of any display means like banners and posters. This increases visibility. In addition, blocks are usually built in clusters, in close proximity. This means that you have about 400 people living in a building barely 50 meters away from you.

HIGH POPULATION DENSITY HDB estates are characterized by many people living in one area. The sheer number of people living in your cluster of flats means that display items will have a huge reach. Better still if your flat is located near amenities like kopitiams.

THE PLAYGROUND, A BATTLEGROUND A playground is a place where the true traits and behavior of children can be observed. It is also a place where parents meet. The playground is not as innocuous as it seems. Children often come into conflict over interactions at the playground. On the sidelines, unspoken battles are waged between parents. Comparisons and judgments on the children are made. Always ensure that your child’s leadership abilities are showcased. Train him to initiate play, be vocal and mediate conflict. This will make the other kid’s look up to him. Other skills that are instantly noticeable are the child’s thinking ability and physical prowess.

The Family

FAMILY GATHERINGS Traditional Asian societies like Singapore generally view the family as a haven from the world, a place of intimacy, love and trust where individuals may escape the competition of dehumanizing forces in modern society. Seriously? Comparisons have long been a part of family gatherings. Children will be grilled by aunties and uncles on the happenings in their life. Parents will compare their children’s achievements. Such conversations can last for hours. The dangerous thing is that relatives can easily approach your children and bypass you. This can affect your carefully crafted status if the child accidentally lets slip a piece of information you do not wish to reveal . As such, always stay alert even when you are with your kin lest you lose face.

Statistics show that 7 million people(including multiple trips) use the public transport system in Singapore daily. Talking about your child is a good way to kill time while commuting. It also gives you a very large audience given the sheer number of people around you at one time. Given the proposed 6.9 million population, crowding on public transport is expected to rise significantly. This is a minor annoyance which will be offset by the increase in the number of people who will overhear your conversations about your overachieving child. Commuters and other drivers make up a sizable target audience. In addition, many traffic lights and frequent jams mean that people are more likely to notice messages placed vehicles. Bumper stickers, car decals and even mounted signs are all ways that you can proudly display the achievements of your children. IDEAL PHOTOGRAPHY

SOME BASIC RULES WHEN USING PHOTOGRAPHS ARE:

Uploaded videos, photos and instagram photos are less visible than your profile picture and cover photo. However, they allow you to constantly remind friends and family how well your child is doing and what a good and dedicated parent you are.

For child-only pictures, always make sure that the award is very prominent in the photo.

Bumping of photographs can be done by liking or commenting on the photo. These actions will cause the photo to reappear on people’s newsfeeds. Bumping is best done after any hype surrounding the photo has died down.

Always try to ensure that the setting is captured in the photo. Include elements such as the award ceremony banner, the stage or the parade grounds in the picture.

Try to get a picture of you with your child when possible so that you can use it as your profile picture.

Always use captions with your photos to elaborate on what your child has achieved. Take photos of the award itself or collateral like banners and the event booklet if your child’s name is mentioned in them.
