Season Outlook

Lindsey Wilson Football Heads into Year Two with Championship Goals

A five-win season was an impressive way for Lindsey Wilson College to make its debut on the NAIA football landscape. The Blue Raiders were 5-6 overall and 4-2 in the Mid-South Conference East Division, where they finished in third place. The five wins were the most for a firstyear NAIA program in recent history. Although LWC’s strong debut has people eager to see its encore edition in 2011- conference coaches picked the Blue Raiders to finish third this year in the Mid-South Conference East -- LWC coach Chris Oliver is quick to point out that his young football team is still a long way from maturity. “We could have won six games last season or we could have won three,” Oliver said. “We finished third in the conference last year, but I think we understand that it doesn’t automatically mean we’re going to finish third or higher this year. We have to go out and work and earn those wins and do a better job and be a more consistent team if we want to be on top of the conference.” LWC kicks off the season against conference foe Cumberland (Tenn.) University. Kickoff against the Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m. CT on Saturday, Sept. 3, at Blue Raider Stadium. The Bulldogs beat the Blue Raiders 23-7 in 2010. This season, Cumberland is ranked No. 18 in the NAIA preseason poll, and the Bulldogs are picked by MSC coaches to finish second in the MSC West. To prepare for the No. 18 Bulldogs, Oliver has turned to one of the most used adages in the coaching profession. “We just have to go out there and take it one game at a time,” he said. “Winning the Mid-South Conference is our goal, but it starts out with Cumberland.” Taking things one game at a time should be relatively easier this year. That’s because this year’s LWC roster includes players who have been in Oliver’s system for a full season of competition. A total of 35 players on LWC’s 97-man 2011 roster played for the Blue Raiders in 2010. “Something that really helped this year is that our guys came back in better shape,” Oliver said. “Having a few guys who aren’t freshmen in the program has really helped. You’re seeing our offseason conditioning and winter conditioning programs really pay off. Our guys are healthy, so they can get more quality snaps during camp, which makes us a better football team.” But as the Blue Raiders continue to improve, so does the Mid-South Conference.

2

Three MSC teams are ranked in the preseason NAIA poll -- No. 9 Georgetown (Ky.) College, No. 16 University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) and No. 18 Cumberland. That makes the Blue Raiders’ goal of winning the conference a challenge, but it’s one that Oliver thinks his team is ready for. “Our goal from a football standpoint is to win the Mid-South Conference championship,” Oliver said. “I think we are moving in that direction where we will be able to compete to win a conference title.” While the Blue Raiders’ goal is high, the quality of the conference makes the road to that goal a tough one. In the MSC East, LWC competes against Campbellsville (Ky.) University, Georgetown (Ky.) College, Kentucky Christian University, University of Pikeville (Ky.) and University of Virginia’s College at Wise. “Georgetown was first last year on our side of the conference, Campbellsville was second and we were third, and we all bring back a lot of guys,” Oliver said. “So you have the top three teams in the standings bringing back a lot of talent and experience. “It’s going to be even more competitive at the top this season. You look at the other three teams, and they all have new coaching staffs. There is usually a natural bump in competitiveness following a coaching change, so we anticipate all three teams to be better this season.” If competing in the six-team MSC East wasn’t challenging enough, in 2011 the Blue Raiders will also face three teams from the very solid MSC West -- Cumberland, Union (Ky.) College and Belhaven (Miss.) University. “On the West, Cumberland was in the mix for a league championship last year and is probably one of the top two defenses we faced,” Oliver said. “Union is a good football team, and Belhaven is very athletic. We played (Belhaven) last year with a receiver (Cordario Calvin) who went to training camp with the Philadelphia Eagles this season.” The Blue Raiders’ 2011 offense will look a lot like it did in 2010 -- a high-octane, pass-dominant game. LWC scored an average 25.9 points a game in 2010, on an average of 221.5 passing yards and 92.1 rushing yards per game. The major difference with the LWC offense in 2011 is that it will have a mix of experienced second-year players with the athleticism of this year’s recruiting class.

on offense in a couple of areas,” Oliver e said. “I think we are going to protect the quarterback better. It helps that they have done a better job of getting rid of the football. So between both those improvements, I’d like to think we are gos ing to make a big improvement in sacks allowed. I also think our run-blocking has improved as our running-back play is strong. We are still a pass-to-set-upthe-run team, we put the ball in the air, but we are going to have to protect the passer.” On defense, Oliver is excited with the depth and athleticism freshmen have added, but may he be more excited about returning a number of starters who are doing a better job at making plays. “We have some returning starters on defense, but we have overhauled our two-deep (starter and primary back-up player),” Oliver said. “I think we have upgraded talent at a lot of positions, making us not only deeper, but we are more athletic.” Oliver hopes that translates into a better pass defense. In 2010, opponents averaged 357 yards in the air against the Blue Raiders; LWC defenders collected only eight interceptions and 21 sacks on the season. “We are making plays on the ball in the air in pass defense that we weren’t making last year, and we’ve been really encouraged by that,” Oliver said. Bringing football to a college campus is not new to Oliver. He was an assistant coach at Ohio Dominican University during that program’s infant stages. That experience has allowed him to compare it to what has developed so far in Columbia. “We were 3-7 in our second year at Ohio Dominican, but we were a lot better football team in year two than we were in year one,” Oliver said. “I’d like to think we are going to continue to improve our record here in year two. I know we are a better football team, but we have to go out and show what that’s going to mean on Saturdays.” Winning the most football games in the first year of a program in recent NAIA history doesn’t make second-year expectations easy. But Oliver has his team focused, and he’s encouraged his coaches and players to ignore outside distractions. “We are a more complete football team,” he said. “We are going to execute better. But you still have to go out on that field and beat your opponent week in and week out.”

“I think you are going to see strides

The following season, the Panthers led the NAIA in total offense and passing, and they were second in scoring. In 2008, Ohio Dominican was third in passing and 11th in total offense. The Panthers were 26-7 while Oliver was ODU offensive coordinator, which included an appearance in the 2007 NAIA Football Championship Series quarterfinals. Prior to Ohio Dominican, Oliver served as a student-assistant at The Ohio State University. Oliver assisted with the Buckeyes’ tight ends and special teams. He also assisted with scouting and worked closely with recruiting. Oliver helped the Buckeyes to the 2001 Outback Bowl. Blue Raider Stadium

Traveling on the Louie B. Nunn Parkway, it would difficult, if not impossible to ignore Lindsey Wilson College’s newest athletics complex. Blue Raider Stadium is home for Lindsey Wilson football and track & field. The entrance to the stadium -- along with the baseball and softball fields also located at the athletics complex -- is off Highway 80. With a capacity in excess of 2,000 fans, the stadium offers 157 chairback seats and four sections of general admission seating on the home (fieldhouse) side. Additional seating is located on the visitor’s side of the field. Blue Raider Stadium also

houses an eight-lane, 400-meter track for the Lindsey Wilson track & field program. Also included at the venue is a pad for high jumps and pole vault, a long jump pit and a steeplechase pit. Construction of the stadium was completed in August of 2010, while the team has practiced on the field-turf surface since the spring of 2009. High above the playing surfaces, the fieldhouse contains a pair of hospitality suites, a press box, a pair of coaching boxes and home and visiting radio rooms. Above the pressbox is a film deck large enough to house each team’s film crew and TV cameras for television stations or

live Internet streaming. A ticket booth is located on the front-left side of the stadium entrance, as well as a concession stand directly behind the ticket area once inside the gates. The home and away locker rooms are located on the far ends of the stadium. The home locker room includes individual handmade wooden lockers, an athletic training room, equipment room and projection screen area for team meetings and film breakdown. With its picturesque setting and fan-friendly environment, Blue Raider Stadium is one of the finest in the NAIA.
