Common Reading Experience For Freshmen Each year a committee of students, faculty, and staff selects a book to engage the entire campus community in reading and discussion. The selection for the 2012-2013 academic year is Craig Mullaney’s New York Times Bestseller The Unforgiving Minute, which recounts Mr. Mullaney’s unparalleled education and the hard lessons that only war can teach. All incoming University of Kentucky freshmen will receive a free copy of The Unforgiving Minute at their advising conference and are expected to read the book, complete any associated assignments, and attend a discussion session during K Week, which is UK’s welcome week experience.
Campus Housing Incoming freshmen who applied for UK Housing prior to the May 1 deadline will be sent their housing assignment during the first two weeks of June. Housing is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, but we make every effort to accommodate the wishes of our students, as indicated on housing applications. Students who have been offered a place in a Living Learning Cohort at the University of Kentucky have been contacted with their offer. Students who have not received an offer, but who have applied for one of these communities, may receive a space as an alternate or may be assigned another residence hall. Have other questions about housing? Please feel free to contact UK Housing at (859) 257-1866 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Class of Kentucky This year’s Class of Kentucky event is quickly approaching! If your school has not yet nominated a top sophomore for this award, please do so as quickly as possible. Candidates will be notified of their selection and will receive an invitation to the Class of Kentucky Honors Ceremony in July of 2012. Please refer questions to Jonathan Blazejewski, of the UK Admissions Office, at email@example.com or (859) 257-5269.
Summer College Readiness Workshop This summer, select high school students will be invited to UK’s campus to attend the College Readiness Workshop, with the purpose of becoming more competitive applicants for college admissions. Participants in the workshop will take part in two ACT test-taking strategy sessions and complete a practice ACT. Parents of participants are invited to hear from current and former UK students’ parents, UK admissions staff, and UK new parent program staff to learn more about how to prepare their students to navigate college admissions. Discussion topics include the college search process, with a focus on investigating schools and securing financing. In addition to the food, fun, information, and giveaways, participants that complete the practice ACT test will receive a fee waiver for the University of Kentucky admissions application.
For more information, please contact Mike Kimble, of the UK Admissions Office, at firstname.lastname@example.org or (859) 257-5095.
Kentucky High School Students’ Valedictorian Scholarship The University of Kentucky is pleased to recognize top students across the state with the Kentucky High School Valedictorian Scholarship, which is a one-time $500 award for the top ranked student from each accredited high school, should she or he decide to attend UK. This award is NOT for the highest ranked student attending UK, but is exclusively for the valedictorian if he or she enrolls at UK. If your school names multiple valedictorians, please submit the name of the student with the highest ACT/SAT score among your valedictorians. If two students have equal academic credentials and the same ACT/SAT score, you may submit an additional nomination form. Students already receiving full funding through the National Merit Finalist Patterson Scholarship, Singletary Scholarship, or Robinson Scholars Scholarship, will NOT be eligible for the monetary award. Once the nomination form is received, we will determine if the student has already been fully funded for the freshman year. If your valedictorian is planning to attend UK, please return the nomination form (page 5 of this newsletter) with his or her name, home address, and social security number. We will contact the student directly to instruct him or her to attach a final high school transcript with the acceptance form. The form must be returned to the Office of Academic Scholarships by fax, mail, or email by JUNE 1, 2012. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have by using the information below.
