From June 1 – June 9, they collected donated non-perishables at their Libertyville office. With overwhelming help from the community and local affiliates, BHHS Chicago was able to provide 820 food items weighing in over 960 pounds to St. Joseph’s Food Pantry.

John Brian Losh How did you get your start in real estate? My start in real estate was pretty simple. When I was getting ready to graduate from college in 1971, I looked around and I thought about the people who I had met who were successful, people I had done business with and who influenced my life. Almost all of them were in the real estate business. In 1971, 50 years ago, I joined Ewing & Clark. I bought the company in 1976 and by the mid-eighties we were doing more and more referral business around the globe. People moving to and from Seattle, but there was really no central source of contacts. And so, I started Who’s Who in Luxury Real Estate with a few friends that I had met around the country. We started out with less than a hundred and now were close to 500 of the best brokers in the world.

What inspires you to succeed? In this business we help families from the very beginning. I am always inspired when I help a family move into their first home. And then when they move on from their starter home to their transition home, and then buy a secondary home or finally the home of their dreams. I’m also inspired by the generational aspect of it, when people buy for their children and their children’s children. It’s always exciting and always changing. It’s always improving someone’s life.

How did you choose your own home? I live in Seattle, where I have lived my whole life. If you live in Seattle, the goal is to either have a view home or one to live on the water, Lake Washington or Puget Sound. I was fortunate enough to, at a very young age, stumble across an obscure listing on Lake Washington that needed a little fixing up. So, my wife and I bought it and 40 years later, I’m still living there and enjoying every minute. I love Seattle.

What are your favorite places to travel? Building the Who’s Who in Luxury Real Estate network has allowed me to visit over 130 countries and territories, each one is exciting and unique. Choosing my favorite is tough, but I would have to say Italy, because of the excitement, diversity, food, and at the top of every chair lift, there’s a bar. I particularly enjoy visiting Venice, it’s my favorite city in the world.

Describe your perfect martini. Start with a lot of gin, only gin. Add just a drop of vermouth, a lot of ice. Shake the mixer until it is covered in frost. Then pour into ice cold glasses with two olives and a lemon twist. Can’t beat it. – Look for the full recipe in the November issue of Luxury Real Estate Magazine.

What Inspired the Start of Who’s Who in Luxury Real Estate? I started Who’s Who in Luxury Real Estate in 1986 because as a broker in Seattle I needed contacts throughout the world to help me serve my high end clientele, and I knew others would also have this need. We started with maybe 30 or 40 members and before we knew it, we were up to 500.

In contrast to the vibrant and gaudy design trends of the eighties, the nineties was all about

getting back to basics. A piqued interest in minimalist design and Japanese influences sparked a rise in neutral colors, creamy tones and blonde woods. To offset the neutral color palette, it was popular to add pops of color, like red, blue or hunter green, often in the form of an accent wall. Walls were a large focal point in the nineties, it was very stylish to have sponge-painted walls and faux finishes to give them a texturized effect. In the latter half of the decade, prints and patterns made a notable comeback, namely damask and florals.
