BATHROOM Throw a little light on the bathroom for once, the unsung hero of our times Nothing beats a warm soak in an oversized bathtub to keep a cold winter’s night at bay. Whether you opt to focus on the family bathroom or your own private en-suite, warmth is the key to decorating this space. Even the sparsest rooms can boast a cosy glow with a row of pillar candles (LED if you mean to leave them unattended) grouped together in artistic clusters and strings of fairy lights draped seductively around the mirror. For rooms with large windows, a little frosted etching – either hand drawn or with a patterned window film – comes into its own when illuminated by soft, pale lighting.

BEDROOM Make a statement with arboreal accents in your private haven We tend to focus all our efforts on rooms that we know our guests will enjoy, but spreading the decorative warmth into the bedroom creates a secluded sanctuary that offers reprieve from the Christmas chaos. Minimalist design that may appear stark elsewhere can maximise your efforts in this room. Rustic vibes, such as holly leaves, mistletoe or stars made from twine that delicately dangle above the headboard truly set the tone. For bedrooms with a fireplace, don’t be scared to hang a stocking. And for bold palettes, match a faux Christmas tree to the colour of your walls – midnight blue, emerald green and ruby red work best.
