Capital Hill Residence in Moscow, Russia by Zaha Hadid Architects. Located on the north-face hillside in Barvikha where pine and birch trees grow up to 20 metres high, a villa with fluid geometries emerges from the landscape. According to the architect, the programme is organized vertically on four levels. The lower level is envisioned as a leisure space and includes a living room, massage and fitness areas, as well as a sauna and hammam baths. One level up on the ground floor is the main living room, dining space, kitchen, entertainment and indoor swimming room and parking spaces. The first floor contains the main entrance lobby, study/library, guest room and children’s room. The master bedrooms and a lounge with an exterior terrace occupy the upper level. I exhale slowly, squinting through virtually closed eyes. Somewhere out there, where the gentle waves of the Indian Ocean become one with the horizon, is where the equator must be. There are those who believe they can sense the proximity to this magical border which separates the Northern from the Southern Hemisphere. And one thing is for sure, I have reached my destination. Villingili, one of the largest and also one of the most beautiful islands in the Maldives. And also my own personal journey’s end. Hotel

I have the opportunity to enjoy this wonderfully relaxing expe-
rience thanks to a visit to the island’s spa – the spa facility, cove-
ring almost 17,000 m², belongs to Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort
& Spa, one of the most spectacular holiday destinations in the
world. The main features of the 5-star resort, which boasts nine
different types of villa and 132 individual villas, as well as a
number of bars and restaurants, a 9-hole golf course and dozens
of exciting diving locations, are not the only superlatives it has to
offer. In fact, its true greatness lies in its captivating little details.
The designer and the hotel manager do not just pamper their guests. They enchant them. On the beach, in the morning sunshine, you
can lose yourself in your dreams under the canopies of billo-
wing cloth that beckon after your first swim. Later, comfortable
sunbeds on the villa’s terrace entice you to stay longer at the
side of the pool, with its view of the glistening ocean. The
architecture is unique. For example, in the Water Villas, where
the high ceilings give the rooms an extremely airy feel and the
turquoise sea is mirrored in the glass panels. The “Tree House
Villas” are also spectacular – the wooden homes “disappear” in
the foliage at the top of the jungle’s lofty trees. These villas are

“Javvu” but also above the “Endheri” and “Manzaru” bars, which seem to be purpose-built for a cocktail in the twilight hours. This is where young couples meet to make their plans for lunch the next day on board the yacht “Horizon” which sets course for the equator. Those who would like to enjoy a more intimate experience after sunbathing on the panelled deck can book the “Private Jungle Dinner” for a wonderful candlelit evening beneath the palms. Wine connoisseurs can choose from more than one hundred quality wines on offer at Villingili. The virtually perfect selection, put together by head sommelier Winnie Toh, earned the resort the coveted “Wine Spectator Award of Excellence” in 2013. The Shangri-La Lounge at the airport on the neighbouring island of Gan, just a five minute boat ride away, pampers arriving and departing guests with its excellent all-round service. In the only resort-owned airport lounge in the Maldives, Shangri-La also welcomes VIPs who arrive by private jet. Back in the clouds again already, I close my eyes and take a look back at my exceptional experiences on this idyllic island. A sentence I had read on the Shangri-La homepage and which sums up Villingili perfectly suddenly comes to mind: When time stands still, the enchantment lives on.

view of the Victoria Harbour. Under the water, I am enveloped in mellow music. And on emerging, Hong Kong’s skyline in all
its splendour awaits me, including the tower of the International
Finance Centre. And over there in Kowloon, on the other side
of the harbour, is the Ocean Terminal. The Cultural Centre. The
Museum of Art. In the harbour beneath me, an old Chinese junk

In good spirits and slightly “dizzy” from the dazzling array of products on offer, I move on to the malls on the nearby harbour promenade – “The Landmark”, one of the city’s oldest and most popular shopping centres, and the “Pacific Place Mall” are joined together by passages. On my schedule for later in the day are the “Elements Hong Kong Shopping Mall” in Kowloon, “Harbour City” in the Tsim Shan Tsui district and the “Times
Kowloon Shangri-La Tapas Bar - alfresco dining
Square Mall” in Causeway Bay. In for a penny, in for a pound! Hong Kong’s special blend of Asian and European flair has cast its spell over me. A detour takes me to the “Graff Diamonds” store in the Ritz-Carlton hotel on Austin Road West. Audrey

the Mandarin Oriental hotel on Connaught Road on Hong Kong
Island. And it also has something to offer the men – in the exclusive
gentlemen’s barber shop. The afternoon is devoted to the city’s three most famous attractions. The Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre with its spectacular architecture. Then the superb panorama from Victoria Peak, Hong Kong’s landmark mountain, which you can still ascend with the Swiss funicular railway dating back to 1888, and where the real estate prices climb even higher with every station. And, not to be forgotten, Disney Land on Lantau, one of the 263 islands which make up Hong Kong. Time for afternoon tea in the magnificent hotel “The Peninsula” in Kowloon. Princess Diana enjoyed the dignified atmosphere of the Victorian palace which is reminiscent of the British colonial era. Hollywood stars, such as Richard Gere, also frequent the hotel. “The Peninsula” boasts its own helicopter landing pad and no less than 14 well-cared for Rolls-Royce limousines. In the comfortable cushioned seats and with a virtually silent engine, you can enjoy exploring the nearby shopping streets as if you are floating on a cloud – especially Nathan Road with its wonderful window displays.

The idea for this unusual wine cellar came to Borja Saracho when he read reports about ancient bottles, which had been found in the wrecks of ships which sank long ago: off the Swedish coast, divers discovered bottles of wine that were hundreds of years old in the bug of the SS Astrid, which went down here in a torpedo attack in 1916. What is presumed to be the oldest Champagne in the world - a Veuve Clicquot from 1780, was also salvaged from a sunken sailing ship in the Baltic Sea. At an auction in Helsinki, one bottle alone out of a total of 70 “Wreck wines” brought 30,000 euros. The amazing thing about this find: almost all bottles were still entirely drinkable. In the darkness of the ocean, under high pressure and at refrigerator temperatures, the consistency, bouquet and taste prevailed. The unanimous opinion of many experts: below sea level, wine finds the ideal conditions for a perfect ripening process and an unusually long storage life. 82

Together with his friend Javier Ortuondo, an experienced marine
biologist, Borja Saracho founded the “Bajoelagua” wine press
house and started production of the world’s first underwater
wine. The growing areas of the Crusoe lie in Rioja and Ribera
del Duro. The select grapes (primarily Tempranillo) flourishing on
80-year old vines, are harvested by hand and then stored for six
months in oak casks.
Following the bottling process, Borja Saracho and Javier Ortu-
ondo move the load with their own cutter, the “Crusoe Treasure”,
along the Cantabrian coast out to sea. There, they both put on a
diving suit and oxygen bottles and personally transport the wine
down to a depth of 20 metres. This is where the storage containers
of the “Bajoelagua” underwater bodega are located: in the cage-
like modules, the stored bottles are continuously rinsed by sea-
water. Side effect of the concrete reef artificially created for this
purpose: more than 150 types of ocean life could be relocated
to this place – including fish, crabs and marine plants, which
were already considered to be extinct.
The underwater maturing process takes a whole year. During the

autumn and winter storms, sensors and cameras monitor the safety
of the valuable wines. Because on this section of the coastline,
storm floods with huge waves and enormous forces are not a
rare occurrence at this depth too. When the sea is calm, specia-
lised divers regularly look up the storage facilities. Water samples
are drawn time and again and the influences on the ocean bed
are recorded extremely precisely: tides, temperature, pressure,
gravitational force. All of these and numerous other factors lead
here under the reef to completely different chemical and sensoric
processes. In the opinion of the highly regarded onologist Antonio
Palacios Garcia from La Rioja University, underwater wine has
a higher oxygen fraction and more powerful colour pigments
than drops matured in a wine cellar. Furthermore, there is an
especially harmonic tannin content. Advantages which wine
connoisseurs know how to appreciate. “Bajoelagua” is thereby
not only a wine producer. At the same time, it is also the first
scientific facility in the world to look into the question of what
practical effect the influence of the ocean has on the maturation
process of wine. The Universities of Bilbao and Alicante are sup-
porting the project.

The first “Crusoe Treasure” vintages 2010 and 2011 were raised after extensive underwater storage in December 2012 (“Classic”) and September 2013 (“Passion”) during several dives. Both wines are strictly limited: The “Passion” was issued with 5560 numbered bottles, and only 3200 bottles of “Classic” entered the trade. Also Importhaus DiBu Power GmbH from Dinslaken, a specialist for innovative beverages from all over the world, became aware of these rare vintages from Spain and took over the role of exclusive general importer for marketing in Germany and Switzerland. Both wines are characterised by an amazing presence of taste and intensive aromas. The “Classic” is powerful and fruity – with notes of black liquorice, truffle, rosemary, mint, tobacco, nuts and a trace of cloves. The woody aromas come through as coconut, cinnamon stick and vanilla. The “Passion” also has a powerful, racy and fruity effect on the palate. The bouquet impresses with its fresh fruits with a connotation to chocolate. Furthermore, ripe, red berries, a hint of liquorice and roast undertones of cinnamon. To conclude: a vibrant wine, which awakens memories of dry sea grass. Without any doubt, anyone who uncorks these wines is opening up another world of wine for himself at the same time …

In the USA, China and Europe, the demand for the new models is soaring. What’s the secret behind this intriguing success story?

Monaco, 1957. A brilliant Sunday in May. The engines roar down below on the circuit. Fangio, the greatest racing driver ever before Michael Schumacher, jumps into his fire-red
Maserati 250F. Maserati. In those days, the name alone was
enough to set the road trembling, at a time when the fledgling
F1 was a game of life and death. That wasn’t just because of
the Monte Carlo circuit, which is still tricky today. In the tight
curves, past the casino, then through the tunnel that ends in the
blistering backlight of the sun. It was also not just because
drivers like Juan Manuel Fangio sat practically unsecured in
their cockpits. It was due to the fever that consumed fans
throughout the world as soon as the starting pistol was fired for
the fastest car race in the world.

On that Sunday, Fangio drove confidently to victory. A victory
that the designers at the world champions Maserati had also
earned. On this day, the name Maserati was finally burnt into
roads throughout the globe.
Today, Maserati looks back proudly on dozens of spectacular
triumphs in motor sport. Many races are history. But the legend
lives on: “A unique sports car with the style of a limousine and
the heart of a Formula 1 racing car” is how the new Quattroporte
can basically be described. Year of manufacture of this extremely
comfortable relaunch with its groomed-sporty elegance: 2013.
Under the bonnet: up to 530 HP. And another current model is
reminiscent of the magic of motor sport: the new Ghibli (Arabian
for “south wind”). A sleekly elegant sports limousine with flair
and almost unbridled engine power. With these two models,
Maserati has raced to pole position in the premium sports car
sector. In the USA, Maserati is presently the fastest growing
carmaker. Second largest sales market: China. In Europe as well,
sales advanced sharply – most recently by 133 percent. With
more than 23,000 orders on the books worldwide, production
is running in top gear like never before.
Flashback: an old bottle factory in Bologna. This is where Alfieri,
Ettore and Ernesto Maserati opened a small workshop for racing

cars in the winter of 1914 - “Officine Alfieri Maserati SA”. In the midst of the turmoil of the First World War, the three Maserati brothers tinkered with valves, took a saw to the chassis and revved up their own engine. Time and again the work had to be interrupted. In 1926, the talented Maserati boys finally presented their first racing car: the “Tipo 26”. In the very same year, the “Tipo 26” took part in the famous Targa Florio race on Sicily – and won! A long queue of buyers soon formed in front of the Maseratis’ workshop in Bologna. And so the foundation stone for a world brand was laid, without which the development of the automobile industry would be inconceivable. Even in 1929, Maserati set a new speed record: 246 km/h! Best in the world at a time when some other cars were still overtaken by donkey carts. As early as 1940, demand for the first Maseratis had grown so strongly that a new factory was built. Rapidly, “Viale Ciro Manotti” in Modena was synonymous with the world of noble racing cars. Immediately after the Second World War, Maserati makes a fresh start. But this time, the “fast brothers” from Modena don’t have any finishing line in sight – rather drivers who place value on elegance as well as a sporty driving style. With the Maserati

early as 1946. The A6 launches the Gran Tourismo line which
is still successful today. Soon the first Quattroporte and Ghibli
models flow off the production line. In the 1950s, the 2000 GT
(1950, 1954), the 3500 GT (1957) or the 5000 GT (1959)
are the icons of the country road. Followed by the Mistral,
Khamsin, Bora, Merak, Barchetta, Gran Cabrio - and the popu-
lar Ghibli Spyder. When this classic two-seater fastback was first introduced in
1969, nobody guessed that this model would one day attract
the highest price at auction in the history of Maserati. Half a
century later, in February 2014, a Maserati aficionado paid no

This niche “consists in a differentiated proposition, based on brand creativity and focused on brand experience” fitting an “increasing demand for differentiated, more authentic, elaborate and creative brands”, explains Marc Chaya. “This new ecosystem has pushed existing historic luxury players to launch their own niche offerings (Hermes with Hermessense, Chanel with Les Exclusifs, Dior and La Collection Privée…) and is leading to a plethora of offers and new comers”.
Personal olfactory theatralisation “Beyond economics, perfumes are a question of emotions and personality”, states Christophe Cervasel. “Production itself remains a matter of craftmanship”. Here lies the key to the perfume market - and its recent evolution: a search for quality. “Natural ingredients, used by premium products, are a defining factor of this quality, notably when it comes to essential oils”, asserts Fabrice Pellegrin. A given fragrance can require one to two years of research to strike an innovative note reached through “a direct interaction between the client (brand owner) and the perfumer” explains Nathalie Lorson, Perfumer at Firmenich. For her, the perfumer is 112

an “interpreter”: the client sets the frame, and the perfumer innovates within this frame. However, it is important to strike the right balance. For Christophe Cervasel, “the magic of creation can be lost in too much interaction with the client. A certain freedom is necessary to innovate and surprise. A parallel with fine art makes sense: a creation can be spontaneous or on order, but a certain freedom is given to the artist.” Fragrances are hence the equivalent of a medieval bridge: a connection between the client (brand owner) and the customer (consumer), built by the perfumer for communication, but also as a social and personal instrument. For this magic to happen, a certain “theatralisation and personalisation of the sale process” is necessary, states Christophe Cervasel. As “customers are searching for their own way to express their personalities, sometimes made to measure fragrance (pioneered by Francis Kurkdjian) make sense,” explains Marc Chaya. Fabrice Pellegrin concurs: “there is a need to build a story with the perfume: emotions and dreams on which olfactory identities are built”. Perfumes are hence constantly reinterpreting our identities, supporting our daily performance in the permanent social theater we act in.

Navigant Research published recently.
And a quick glance at the line-up of exhibitors for Top Marques
Monaco 2014 is certainly a testament to the industry’s trends.

Last year, more than 35,000 visitors came to the show to marvel at the awe-inspiring vehicles inside the state-of-the-art Grimaldi Forum, a stone’s throw from the Mediterranean Sea. But without doubt the highlight of the four day event is the chance to see a selection of these cutting-edge cars being test driven on privatized sections of the Formula 1 circuit. The show is the only event on earth where visitors are invited to drive their dream car on some of the most challenging parts of the same Grand Prix track on which Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel will race less than six weeks later. In London, where these fairs abound, it is easy for us to assume that people have an easy knowledge not only of what an art fair is, but which ones are the best and how they differ from one another. For anyone who is interested in collecting or buying works of art or antiques, the right art fair is an essential date in the diary: in short, it is an opportunity to see the best stock from the very best art dealers all under one roof. From 14 – 23 March, the art and antiques world descends upon Maastricht in Holland for The European Art Fair (TEFAF), the most important event of its kind. This year’s fair showcases an extraordinary range of art and antiques: from an 11th century Vajradhuta mandala, a spiritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism representing the Universe and is used as an aid to mediation, brought by Rossi & Rossi, to a masterpiece by William Hogarth (1697 – 1764) brought by The Fine Art Society. The Beggars Opera II is a major work by the Hogarth and this will be the first time since the painting’s creation in the 18th century that it will be on the market.
