o mark the 30th anniversary of the BMW M1 super sports car, BMW Group Design is presenting homage to this legendary model as part of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2008. The BMW M1 designed by Giorgio Giugiaro was a car of superlatives and a highly emotive vehicle that was uncompromisingly primed for the race track. Spawning this development was the BMW Turbo by Paul Bracq, a revolutionary concept car that, in addition to its groundbreaking functional design, also boasted a raft of technical innovations. It is from these two unique vehicles that the BMW M1 Homage takes its cue—a design study that pays tribute to its forerunner models and an embodiment of the competence, creativity and potential of the BMW Group Design team. “For BMW, heritage is always also a living heritage. Drawing inspiration from your own past and thereby reinventing yourself that is exactly what the BMW M1 Homage demonstrates iin impressive style.” Dr. Klaus Draeger, BMW Group Board Member, Development, explained. A particular forte of BMW Group Design is to draw on its own powerful history and actively feed this into the design of the future. The BMW M1 Homage is a design study in the tradition of a BMW Turbo that represents a contemporary take on the BMW M1 and the mid-engine concept. This tribute exhibits an emotional design that showcases technology and integrates it into the overall aesthetics of the vehicle. The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este provides the perfect backdrop for the BMW M1 Homage. Here automotive beauties from the past meet the concept cars and design studies of the future. It is in this dynamic field of tension between past and present that the BMW Group Design team affords insights into its own perspective on a historically inspired automotive future. “For a company, as for a product, it is important to be aware of one’s roots. In the spirit of Giugiaro and Bracq, the BMW M1 Homage unites the BMW values of design and technology in a highly emotional and exciting interpretation, “ commented Christopher E. Bangle, Director Design BMW Group.

inspired by heritage Unveiled at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2008 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the legendary M1 by Giugiaro

bmw The BMW M1 was an utterly uncompromising super sports car oozing passion; its forerunner, the BMW Turbo by Paul Bracq, displayed innovative technical solutions that found their expression in emotional design. It is precisely this blend of technology and design, rationality and passion that the BMW M1 Homage embodies. It presents an exciting and authentic interpretation of the BMW M1 and the mid-engine concept from a present-day perspective, and the legacy of the BMW M1 Homage is obvious at first glance. Unquestioningly, it takes up the graphic play of the hallmark BMW M1 colors black and orange and interprets them anew. The Liquid Orange paintwork exclusively developed for the BMW M1 Homage cites the classic BMW M1 color, yet surprises with its powerfully iridescent play of color and brilliant depth. It shapes the extrovert surface language and strikingly highlights the eloquent interplay of convex and concave surfaces. Mention the BMW M1, and another feature that immediately springs to mind is the characteristic twin logo at the rear, on the right and left edge above the tail lights. For BMW, this particular arrangement of its emblems has always signaled a mid-engined model. In the development stage of the BMW M1 this dual emblem was the first styling element to be approved even before the initial sketches were drawn. Likewise, it was confirmed from the outset that the BMW M1 Homage would feature the same twin badges. Other specific styling cues taken from the BMW M1 are the air vents in the bonnet and the

louvers on the rear windscreen, as well as the black cutline dividing the roofline from the rear section of the body. Overall, the exterior dimensions of the BMW M1 Homage are in keeping with those of the BMW M1; only the extended wheelbase indicates a larger passenger cell. Emotional design is the flashpoint between tradition and modernism. The BMW M1 Homage takes long familiar elements from the BMW Design repertoire, reinterprets them and couches them in a new context. Its design brings together past and present, expanding the observer’s perception through new design solutions that find their expression in typical BMW style. If the contrasting colors were a dominant design theme for the BMW M1, this contrast is perpetuated in the BMW M1 Homage through its surface styling. Familiar elements, such as the trademark proportions, are combined with new and exciting lines, surfaces and details to create an up-todate interpretation of the BMW M1, which remains to this day an extraordinary car. Shunning the strong wedge shape of other mid-engine cars, the BMW M1 Homage consciously opts for BMW’s characteristic proportions. A relatively long engine compartment, a clearly defined transition into the A-pillar and a stretched window line featuring the “Hofmeister” kink instantly give it away as a bona fide BMW. The horizontal flow of lines lowers the car’s visual center of gravity and lends it an air of sovereignty. Though the BMW M1 already boasted extremely harmonious and sporty proportions, its surface design was not yet an explicit styling issue and was dominated by highcontrast graphic themes. Today, however, next to the car’s proportions, it is primarily the unusual surface styling that determines the strong recognition value of a BMW model. For some years now, all BMW vehicles have exhibited a striking and unique design language. The sculpting of the surfaces demands substantial experience and craftsmanship at the highest level. Only through the combination of craft skills, state-ofthe-art technology and a sure sense of the personality of each BMW can designers and modelers achieve the overall sculptural effect that lends a BMW its unique character. The BMW M1 Homage systematically melds

BMW M1 homage

For BMW, heritage is always also a living heritage. Drawing inspiration from your own past and thereby reinventing yourself that is exactly what the BMW M1 Homage demonstrates iin impressive style. the proportions and graphic themes of the BMW M1 with the surface language of the new BMW look a combination that imbues the vehicle with an exciting, sporty and authentic emotionality. The front-end styling of the BMW M1 Homage adopts many of the graphic design themes of the BMW M1: the contrast between the black, recessed surfaces and the car color, the small, squat kidney grille and the “invisible” headlamps. And yet the front of the BMW M1 Homage is an absolute novelty for BMW. Each element assumes a function: the hallmark twin kidney, for example, is not only a distinguishing feature of the BMW brand but combines aerodynamic, cooling-air routing and safety solutions. The design of the headlamps, meanwhile, is a new iteration of the retractable headlights of the BMW M1. Like the lamps on the historic model, those on the BMW M1 Homage are only visible when switched on. When not in use they are discreetly integrated into the front-end design and “disappear” into the recessed black cutline, almost like pop-up headlights. Along the side of the car all the lines, surfaces and details guide the eye from the front end along the stretched engine

compartment and clearly defined A-pillars before converging at the center of the vehicle. Two expressive lines are drawn from the front along the flanks of the vehicle towards the engine compartment area. The flow of lines begins in a straight, disciplined fashion at the front end, lowering the optical center of gravity of the BMW M1 Homage and highlighting its low-slung stance. From the middle of the car, however, the lines break up. The power of the design is focused precisely where the power of the vehicle also lies at the engine. Strong, sensuous sweeping lines accentuate the car’s mid-engine concept, the design emphasizing the mechanics behind it, the engineering skills and the engine expertise of the BMW Group. The roofline of the BMW M1 Homage is flatly tapered, extending into and around the rear. In so doing it draws a continuous line and forms a link between the two sides of the car. It is on this line, above the taillights, that the hallmark twin BMW logo can also be found. The overall design is driven by functionality and each detail has its purpose. Aspects such as aerodynamics, cooling-air routing and safety lend the BMW M1 Homage technical substance and make it a genuine BMW. A telling symbol of this is the kidney grille design of the BMW M1 Homage, fulfilling as it does several functions at the same time. The twin kidney isn’t just a signature BMW

feature, it is also part of the car’s honed aerodynamics: it guides the air to the engine cooling as well as constituting the front section of a crash box, similar to the monocoque chassis of a Formula One race car. Inspired by aircraft design, the car as a whole also boasts sophisticated air ducting through the body. For example, the cooling-air routing for the engine is positioned below the roofline, in the black recessed cutline along the side of the vehicle behind the window graphic. Small flaps and openings guide the air stream into the engine compartment to ensure an adequate supply of cooling air. “The BMW M1 Homage clearly manifests the creativity and potential of the BMW Design team. A project such as this is a valuable source of inspiration for our day-to-day work.” Explained Adrian van Hooydonk, Director Design BMW Automobiles. The BMW M1 Homage holds great significance for the BMW Group Design team, its genesis epitomizing both a living tradition and an innovative future. This vehicle is designed as a source of inspiration; it sets out to challenge us to question and rethink what we see around us. The BMW M1 Homage pays eloquent tribute to the BMW Turbo and the BMW M1, which in their design were well ahead of their time. Originally slated as “merely” a design study, their influence remains very palpable today - 30 years on.

Spada TS Codatronca

form and function

After three months of tests and trials, Spadaconcept has launched the production of its eagerly awaited supercar, the Spada TS Codatronca. The Italian design studio, Spadaconcept, is the brainchild of several notorious designers in the industry—Paolo Spada (former designer at Smart and Honda) together with his father Ercole, (former chief designer at Zagato and BMW), Domiziano Boschi (former Mc Kinsey) and Wojtek Sokolowski. With this car Spadaconcept cherishes and revives the important heritage of Ercole Spada and the philosophy, which characterized each of his creations. The company’s vision is centered on “functional design,” which, according to Ercole Spada, means allowing the functionality of an object to express itself through its shape. Following this unique vision, Spadaconcept came up with a genuinely ground breaking design—the bold and daring TS Codatronca. Far from creating a show car without rules, Spadaconcept worked with strict constraints in order to reach the quality standards of a niche, handcrafted production. With this new sport car, Spadaconcept aims at reviving the philosophy that inspired Ercole Spada’s past models, in an attempt to combine aesthetics with functionality and racing performances. This new model is the latest evolutionary step of the truncated tail – “coda tronca” in Italian. This aerodynamic shape, which Spada introduced with the Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ, TZ1 and TZ2 in the 60’s, gives this new car unique and nimble lines that add an alluring lightness to the vehicle’s silhouette while improving performances. Spadaconcept maximizes performance by introducing aerodynamic lines that mould the vehicle’s lightweight, aesthetically beautiful exterior. The design results in an extremely 16

stable and manageable car, able to achieve good racing performances by exploiting the power of its engine. Spada TX Codatronca has an original and nimble shape coupled with elegant interiors. The first version, named the TS (Turismo Sportivo), is a car with an engine of more than 600hp with race performances. Despite the fact that the focus at Spadaconcept wasn’t on “pure” power but rather on aerodynamics, lightness and handling, this car can still reach more than 340 km/h and complies with the FIA GT1 regulations. Care for environmental issues has resulted in SpadaVettureSport’s decision to add to the menu an ad hoc “converter kit,” which allows one to fuel the car with E85 green fuel. This green choice also yields a bit more performance from the engine. TS Codatronca, will be produced and marketed by SpadaVettureSport, a company created and controlled by Spadaconcept in collaboration with a team of selected technical, industrial and commercial partners. SpadaVettureSport has aggregated the highest profile resources around this project by establishing strategic alliances mainly with small firms located in the district of Turin with great past histories and amazing skills. These partners have great tradition and specialization

and allow SpadaVettureSport to combine the “best ofbreed” in technology with tradition and “saper fare” (Italian know-how). The industrial partner FS Group, a firm based near Turin, who has already realized prototypes for Mercedes, Smart, Range Rover, will craft the concept’s body using material supplied by Elantas Camattini, and PPG. The partner Italtecnica, a small firm located in Cambiano, near Turin—already involved in the tuning of ParisDakar and Le mans cars for Peugeot—will work on braking system, suspensions and engine upgrade. Finally, Turin based tuning specialist Saprco will supply seats and other interior items while Pirelli and OZ Racing will provide the vehicle’s tires and wheels. For the launch of this supercar, SpadaVettureSport has signed a co-branding and comarketing agreement with AZNOM, a small company based in Monza, that produces accessories and luxury items. AZNOM will realize and market a line of amenities with the Codatronca brand. The agreement signed by SpadaVettureSport and AZNOM has a long-term perspective and involves joint efforts to approach the market. The Codatronca TS version will make its world première next spring in Monte Carlo. According to SpadaVettureSport, the TS version is the first step and will be shortly followed by others like the TSS. The TSS version, Turismo Super Sportivo, is already undergoing testing at SpadaVettureSport and should be launched at the end of 2008. In order to realize these unique models, Spadaconcept and SpadaVettureSport have a manufacturing system in place that ensures each handcrafted vehicle possesses the quality and customization standard in their niche. Spadaconcept remains in the public eye because it focuses on the core of the business—consulting, design, and creation, but the innovative company moves forward by looking to the future. The company has started to explore new fields, especially bioethanol powered cars, and it is currently working in the development of an Environmental Friendly Vehicle (EFV). A Moving Experience he art that moves us. It’s at the Louvre in Paris. The Hermitage in St. Petersburg. The Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York City. And, at the Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance in Rochester, Michigan. Where thousands and thousands gather each year to admire the art of sublimely beautiful classic vehicles. Spread across a canvas of rolling hills bathed in light and color, marked by strikingly creative shapes. Here art is a moving experience both literally and figuratively. Emotions stir as old friends toast one another at festive galas. Minds conjure up rich images of bygone eras. And, long-standing traditions are invigorated with modern flourishes as new generations of connoisseurs are welcomed. The car collector world has long marveled at this medium called Meadow Brook. It takes us back … and revs us up. In the 1920s, the first Concours d’Elegance was staged in France as a unique way for custom coachbuilders and couturiers to reach their elite clientele. In 2008, the Meadow Brook Concours is still an extravaganza of style for fun-loving fashionistas, yet no one would argue that the exquisite collector cars are the real stars. “Meadow Brook is a celebration of the power and beauty of the automobile,” says executive director Matthew de Larcinese, “and at this, the 30th annual event on the palatial grounds of Meadow Brook Hall, there are 225 reasons to celebrate.” The stellar marques featured at this year’s Meadow Brook Concours salute the work of true genius. Sleek, luxurious and rare, they remind us that feats of engineering and design can also be sights to behold. Let’s start with Ferrari, the end-all, be-all for countless aficionados. The 50s and 60s produced some of the most significant Ferraris in history. And, standouts from the 250 series, the 275 GTB series and the Superamerica series are well-represented at Meadow Brook. “Viva Ferrari,” proclaims event chairman Larry Smith. “Life in this fast lane has been ultra-exciting for over 60 years and this year’s Meadow Brook exhibit is a showcase of Ferrari innovation and performance.” Only 100 Bentley 8 litres were made in 1931 and an amazing five are at Meadow Brook in what is thought to be 20

Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance the largest collection ever amassed. The 8 litre, not unlike other regal beauties, was designed as a halo vehicle. And, it wore the title well with its long wheelbase and innovative six cylinder engine. It is a rare opportunity when enthusiasts can peer under the hood of classics from the 30s. Which is what makes Meadow Brook’s suite of 16s so very special. A look inside these rarely attempted 16 cylinder V engines will be a glimpse into perfect balance and in one 1931 Marmon model, an all-aluminum, overhead valve engine. Honoring the centennials of both General Motors and the Ford Model T, Meadow Brook has lined up outstanding examples of motoring history. The GM display has a stunning array of concept cars from the secret “Studio X” of legendary designer, Bill Mitchell, including fabulous Corvettes. Attendees ccan see, too, highly significant Buick Riviera Silver Arrows and many other groundbreaking vehicles. And, paying tribute to the extraordinary influence of Henry Ford, Meadow Brook is delighted to welcome 12 very fine Model T’s, voted the “Car of the Century” by a panel of automotive journalists. And then there is the classy reunion of 1933s. It has been 75 years since these vehicles were first introduced. Pierce Arrow, Packard, Auburn, Nash and Franklin. These era-defining marques are converging at Meadow Brook from all over the United States. The fact is, on this day in August, the state of the art is Michigan. With names like Bugatti, Duesenberg, Rolls Royce and Porsche also on the Meadow Brook guest list, which includes an unprecedented display of Best in Show winners past and present, it is an impressive gallery. Concours Sunday remains the exclamation point to what has become one of the premier concours events in the world. But, to fully appreciate the experience that is Meadow Brook, is to revel in a long weekend of pure enjoyment. The variety of activities includes the wildly popular hangar party, RM auction festivities, an automotive art exhibit, a designer fashion show and historic races. And, for prancing horse enthusiasts, there is the Ferrari ride and drive as well as a Significant Ferrari discussion panel led by noted collector car expert Keith Martin. In addition, 2008 marks the debut of the exciting and one-of-akind Destination d’Elegance. “Beauty, design and style are quintessential Concours elements,” says de Larcinese, “And, this year, we’ve expanded upon these elements to include lifestyle experiences leading up to Concours Sunday that are intended to wow guests and create an experience they won’t soon forget.” Festive gatherings await guests who appreciate the good life and love to have a great time. Sampling wines from the best regions in the world. Enjoying delicious food. Mixing and mingling. Participat-

ing in live and silent auctions. Or, listening to live entertainment while dancing the night away. Set against the backdrop of Meadow Brook Hall, the 1920’s Tudor-revival mansion built by the widow of John Dodge, Destination d’Elegance guests can also enjoy taste treats at Bistro d’Elegance and buy that someone special something special from one of the merchants of distinction at Shoppes on the Green. Wine tasting may introduce guests to a delectable new vintage. The Ferrari seminar might pique new passions. Or, cooking demonstrations, led by a world-class chef, might inspire participants to try a new, healthy recipe or two. In any case, all the activities surrounding Meadow Brook’s exceptional exhibition have been designed to be singularly sensational and memorable for all. Since the very first Concours, many “parades of excellence” have been introduced to a public fascinated with fabulous cars and the finer things in life. In a world of many events that celebrate automobile artistry, the Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance remains a true original. Ferrari’s New California revealed: influenced by the V-12-engined 599 GTB Fiorano and the 612 Scaglietti, the aluminum-bodied California is the company’s first retractable hard top

he first official photographs have been published of the Ferrari California, the latest addition to the new generation of Ferraris that were launched in 2004 with the 612 Scaglietti and the more recent 430 Scuderia. It also flanks the flagship 612 Scaglietti in the prestige sporty Grand Tourer segment and gives the world yet another reason to want a horse in their garage. The Ferrari California joins the Prancing Horse’s 8-cylinder family. Defined by power and performance, the new California has quite the reputation to live up to, as almost all of its stable-mates have made history. In order to bring prestige and infamy to this model, the honored marque made sure to instill the new vehicle with Ferrari’s infamous spirit and innovation. To create the unique new model, the notorious design and manufacturer looked to the past for inspiration and the world today and tomorrow for guidance.

The new Ferrari California will satisfy even the most demanding of owners in term of its superb vehicle dynamics and driving pleasure. In keeping with California’s laid back, life-loving atmosphere, the new model will be available exclusively as a convertible with a folding hard top. Owners will be able to enjoy either a top-down or top-up driving experience. Both chassis and bodywork are aluminum, in line with the rest of the current range. The California will be powered by a new V8 engine mounted for the first time in the marque’s history in the mid-front position. Such a change in engine layout may seem simple, but it forced engineers to rework the vehicle’s entire layout. Ferrari’s are known and coveted for their power and performance. To ensure that the car performs exactly as a Ferrari should, even under harsh driving conditions, the engineering and design team had to

scrupulously test the affect a new engine position would have on the vehicle’s performance. Weight, systems, and more were redesigned, repositioned, or completely redone in order to facilitate the massive modification. In addition to the major restructuring of the vehicle’s inner workings, Ferrari worked tirelessly on creating even more improvements. The new model also features several more innovations. Apart from its folding hard top, these include the original 2+2 concept, which guarantees exceptional versatility of use in the rear of the car. By changing the engine’s position, Ferrari may have gained—for the first time—usable area in the rear. The California’s 4,300 cc V8 engine features direct fuel injection and a “flat” crankshaft. It generates 460 CV at 7,500 rpm with a torque curve that enhances vehicle dynamics and provides maximum driving

pleasure, which is typical for Ferrari. As per the traditional Ferrari transaxle layout, the engine, which, allows the Ferrari California to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in less than 4.0 seconds, will be coupled to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission that boosts the car’s performance while enhancing the vehicle’s response, improves ride comfort and reduces fuel consumption and emissions (c.310 g/km CO2). The comfort is further enhanced by a new multilink rear suspension system. The Ferrari California is also equipped with the exclusive F1-Trac traction control system, which made its debut on the 599 GTB Fiorano and has been further honed to suit the typical driving conditions expected for this new GT. Brembo brakes featuring carbon-ceramic material disks as standard guarantee superbly efficient braking. In addition to sporting the marque’s classic styling cues, the cabin has also been beautifully trimmed using quality materials by Ferrari’s own skilled artisans. a NEW Breed of harley

VRSCX Night Rod

motorcycle arley-Davidson is renowned for cycles that embody the American Spirit. So when the motorcycle manufacturer entered the performance arena in 2002 with the VROD, some of the diehard enthusiasts were a bit hesitant. The cycle world’s reluctance to accept a new breed of Harley didn’t last though, and the all-new VRSCX Night Rod lives up to its short, but impressive, ancestry. The past several years, the motorcycle industry has seen a switch in the public’s purchasing patterns. New riders are no longer choosing cruisers—Harley’s specialty—they’re choosing high performance street bikes. To compete, the iconic manufacturer decided to delve into alien territory with the first VROD. It bridged the gap between “Made in the USA” and technology from afar. It was the perfect solution, and yet, extremely unexpected from a brand most associated with classic Fat Boys and cruiser hogs. Harley-Davidson proved it’s sometimes better to be surprised. The VROD combined the allure of owning an American made Harley with the speed and performance of an import. It was lithe, powerful and yet carried itself with the same panache as its siblings. The VROD

still growled like a beast, but with poised restraint. It simply looked hungry for speed, and the cycle world took notice. Since its release, it’s become a legend in the Harley-Davidson lineup, and the new incarnation doesn’t disappoint. The new 2008 VRSCDX Night Rod definitely complements the VROD lineup and adds a little extra. This time, Harley has enhanced the cycle’s animalistic aesthetics. Swathed in black, the new Night Rod looks like a feline ready to take on its prey. Even when still, it’s a fierce specimen and could interest any rider—even the most devout of import riders—which was Harley-Davidson’s goal. The athletic machine is powered by a liquid-cooled Revolution VTwin 1250cc motor, which produces 125 horsepower at 8250rpm and 85 ft. lbs. of torque at 7000rmp. Harley’s signature engine roar coming from the svelte steel black beast forces one to pause and take notice. It leaves one asking, “A Harley--That looks like that?” The strong, slender steel frame features drag-style handle bars, a round reflector-optic headlight, a color-matched speed screen visor, black machine slotted disc cast aluminum wheels (18-inch rear and 19-inch front), and the purring power plant is powder-coated in black to match the rest of the cycle’s dark, sinister appearance. With a 25.2-

VRSCX Night Rod inch seat, it’s also Harley’s lowest VRSC model. In addition, the brushed straight-shot dual mufflers have black end caps and heat shields and the cycle features a contrasting racing-strip that highlights the bike’s alluring silhouette. Harley isn’t just confined to hogs and cruisers anymore. They’ve bridged the gap with VROD as the foundation, and it’s a strong one. The 2008, VRSCDX Night Rod proves that, and we’re probably going to be seeing a lot more American made performance cycles on the street.

The VROD combined the allure of owning an American made Harley with the speed and performance of an import. It was lithe, powerful and yet carried itself with the same panache as its siblings.

Car Club

“Club Aston” presented by Galpin Motors’ Premier Collection is a superb 3,700-square foot exotic showcase for its exclusive Aston Martin line of luxury autos that transforms the automotive purchase into a unique experience. The one-of-a-kind private club is appointed with amenities that rival the best social clubs in Los Angeles. “Club Aston” will quickly become the next elite place to meet and be seen. Entrance is limited as it will only be granted to those in search of a new luxury ride. Designed by Robert Plant of Ortiz/Plant of Laguna Beach under the direction of Galpin Vice President and Chief Designer Beau Boeckmann, Club Aston is an exclusive retreat that just happens to also house some of the world’s most exclusive vehicles. Key design cues were influenced by 60’s and 70’s British and American spy epics. “We have created an elite, chic and stylish atmosphere for our Aston Martin buyers and owners,” says Boeckmann. “We wanted the space to reflect a fabulously furnished penthouse that is formal, yet relaxing, and completely in keeping with the lifestyle and demands of the typical Aston Martin customer.” The ambience and mystique begins at the Club Aston entry rotunda, hidden in Galpin’s Premier Collection facility. Like many exclusive clubs, the entrance is discreetly disguised to maintain its exclusivity and allure. Behind the curved, sliding stainless steel door, which can be accessed only via a special key card, visitors will find a floor of perforated stainless steel panels with polished granite inserts, red leather-covered walls and a perforated stainless steel ceiling that sets the stage for the luxury that is about to unfold. Entering the main lounge, with floors of Italian Travertine and deep pile carpets, guests find themselves surrounded by walls covered in sensuous Ro60

Plush sofas and wing chairs create a relaxing environment and a comfortable area to reflect on the granite turntable with stainless steel columns and billowing curtains that barely conceals an Aston Martin model, which rotates seductively under backlit theatrical lighting, creating a mesmerizing effect. Club Aston provides a discreet, peaceful escape for visitors, with a fireplace that creates an intimate ambience and a plasma screen wall unit that keeps track of world news, stock prices and sporting events. Cabinets figured in Anigre veneer and burl wood panels with granite tops surround a fully appointed burl wood bar area which provides a variety of refreshments for patrons while they peruse the display shelves of custom appointments from which they can create an individualized Aston Martin interior. To one side a sliding stainless steel door swings open to reveal the Club Aston Vault, with its travertine floors and walls of complementary Venetian plaster and clear glass panels, where additional Aston Martin models are on display for patrons to inspect at their leisure. A special staircase, with rolled aluminum wave panels at the ceiling, mirrored wall panels and travertine treads, leads guests to and from Club Aston and the service drive area. This second hidden entrance allows clients to enter and leave the facility unobserved, and to drop off or collect their vehicles without accessing the adjoining

Galpin Motors’ showroom areas or venturing outside in the event of inclement weather. “I do not believe there has ever been a facility like this in the retail automotive world,” says Boeckmann. “ With Club Aston we have launched a new frontier in automotive retailing; one that recreates the elegance and luxury of an Aston Martin in the surroundings in which it is displayed, while generating a new level of sophistication for the world’s most discriminating automotive customers.”

RARE CONCEPT CAR TO DEBUT AT RM AUCTIONS‘ MONTEREY EVENT one-of-a-kind 1957 Chrysler Diablo concept car handcrafted by Ghia will steal the spotlight at Monterey’s famed classic car weekend this August as it crosses the RM Auctions block. Considered the most valuable concept car of the late 1950s, the revolutionary Diablo will be the star attraction of RM Auctions’ multimillion dollar Sports & Classics of Monterey event, to be held August 15th and 16th in downtown Monterey , California . Conceived by Chrysler’s design head, Virgil Exner, arguably America ’s most influential stylist, this rare example was built by Italian coachbuilder Ghia on a 1955 Chrysler 300 series chassis. A featured concept car for the 1957 US auto show circuit, the car is one of the largest and most impressive concept cars ever built, stretching an impressive 22 feet in length. 72

In 1957, the Diablo was Chrysler’s star concept car of the year. With an investment from Chrysler of over $250,000, the Diablo was showcased to the public at the 1958 Chicago Auto Show, before being returned to Ghia in Italy for their corporate promotion. The car eventually found its way back to the United States and has been under the careful care of its current owner for over 25 years. The sale of this important American concept will be accompanied by extensive documentation, detailing its history and restoration. The ultra-rare Diablo will join several other European styled sports and racing cars and several classic American luxury automobiles at RM Auctions’ world-renowned Monterey auction. “We have assembled the greatest collection of sports and classic cars ever brought together on the Monterey Peninsula ,” said Ian Kelleher, Managing Director of RM Auctions. “The Diablo is simply the holy

Sports & Classics of Monterey

grail of all concept cars in its era. Its upcoming auction in Monterey has received considerable international interest due to its rarity and the fact that concept cars are a featured highlight of this year’s world famous Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance,” he added. The Diablo has been an attraction at such prestigious museums as the Cleveland Auto and Aviation Museum , the Petersen Automotive Museum and Chicago ’s Museum of Science and Industry, as well as at such events as the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and New York ’s Louis Vuitton Classic. Adding to its fascinating history, the 1957 Diablo nearly sealed its fate along with the legendary Chrysler Norseman, when it was scheduled to be shipped aboard the ill-fated Andrea Doria. Luckily, for dream car enthusiasts, last minute work delayed its shipment, preserving it for the enjoyment of future generations. “Our Monterey sale marks the

first time the Diablo has been offered at auction, making for an exclusive ownership opportunity,” added Kelleher. RM Auctions’ Sports & Classics of Monterey will be held August 15th and 16th at the Portola Hotel and Spa and Monterey Conference Center , in Monterey , CA. Coinciding with the famed Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, this event has and will continue to attract thousands of automobile enthusiasts and participants from around the world. Admission to the Sports & Classics of Monterey is $40 per person, with children 12 and under admitted free of charge. An auction catalog is available for an additional $100 U.S. , including shipping and handling within North America. For further information, call (800) -211-4371 or visit

refining a T-REX ver since its launch in 1994, the T-REX has caught numerous glances and has impressed many by its unique character. Within the world of light vehicles, it has entered the icon level. Johnathan Cote, a young industrial designer working at Morelli Designers has designed a new T-Rex. Known for his Electrical Mini School Bus presented in Detroit in 2007 during the Michelin Challenge Design, he has chosen to update the brand by proposing a new concept. While respecting the T-Rex’s DNA, this remodeling offers refreshing new lines and added new assets. Overall, the beauty of this design

imparts elegance and refinement worthy of the best sports cars. The soul of the T-Rex still emanates from the recessed headlights, the lateral and above seats air in-takes and, the ailerons. Two windshield versions are proposed: raised or F1 style. Several storage areas were integrated in the vehicle. A special attention was set on improving luggage space by blending it into the vehicle’s outline. On the other hand, for those who don’t want luggage on their racing car, two lateral caches were built-in. A small storage space at the front may be used for your briefcase and two smaller glove compartments were cleverly fit underneath the security arches.

Eternal Exploration. The KonTiki Diver Eterna has redefined the functional requirements of a diving watch from the bottom up. The result is the KonTiki Diver, with its innovative hinged mechanism. The movement is housed in a case which can be raised and lowered. When the case is raised, the diving time is set using a bezel which can be rotated in either direction. Both the time and the power reserve are clearly legible from the well-structured dial.
