BF Performance

the “bull” unleashed

GT 540 Edition

BF Performance

BF Performance is known as “The home of special Lamborghinis, and for good reason.

The Switzerland-based tuner began developing products for Lamborghinis in the mid-1990’s, ever since parent company Forstner Automobile GmbH started Lamborghini Stuttgart, now one of the largest Lamborghini dealers in Europe. Their association with a leading Lamborghini dealer gives BF Performance a distinct advantage. Simply put, the BF Performance has unequalled familiarity with the unique characteristics of Lamborghini cars and their owners. Having access to the latest specification vehicles and the

GT 540 Edition

ability to drive and evaluate models in real world use every day means that BF Performance engineers can develop products that resonate with Lamborghini owners and bring out the best in the “Bulls” from Sant’ Agata. At the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, BF Performance presented their newest package based on the Lamborghini Gallardo, the GT 540 Edition. The GT 540 includes an aerodynamic kit with a newly designed front spoiler, side skirts under the sills and a carefully sculpted rear diffuser. BF Performance offers a choice of two rear wing styles (the GT or GTR), a front hood and rear view door mirrors made from carbon fiber. In fact, all the BF Performance exterior accessories are made from high quality carbon fiber. In true custom-fitted tradition,

a client can specify fine or wide weave carbon components, with a clear-gloss, clear-matte or color-matched painted finish. It is all up to the client’s preference. Of particular interest to many Lamborghini owners is the fact that BF Performance’s products are designed to affix to the vehicle without making any permanent modifications to the original body parts, which is particularly appealing to the purist collectors. The carbon fiber treatment continues in the engine compartment, which is accented with a comprehensive carbon panel package. The final exterior touch is something that many Lamborghini owners request- the door articulation is modified to allow for the classic “scissor” travel that Lamborghini made famous on the Countach and Diablo.

BF Performance

The exhaust system is typically one of the first items a tuning client chooses to modify on their car. However, improving the performance and sound on a highly developed and uncompromised sports car such as the Gallardo is not a task that should be left to typical manufacturers. BF Performance’s exhaust technology partner has bona fides that include supplying exhaust systems for five Formula One Teams. Therefore, the fit, finish, sound quality and power development of the BF Performance exhaust system are just

what one would expect- world class. There are several exhaust options for the Gallardo offered by BF, including a top of the range model featuring an electronic switch mechanism that gives the option of high or low sound volume. The interior of the BF Performance GT 540 Edition Gallardo receives as much attention as the exterior, and continuing the theme of the exterior parts the emphasis is on extremely high quality carbon fiber. An extensive 19-piece package of interior trim components, finished in a wide range of client-specified colors, highlight the superb design of the Gallardo’s cockpit. The all important interface between man and machine is given attention, with a reshaped, ergonomically formed and carbon fiber trimmed steering wheel along with light weight sport seats trimmed in fine leather and Alcantara. The GT 540 Edition Gallardo as a complete package is a masterwork of art and function. However, Lamborghini owners who are intrigued by particular features on the GT540 do not have to commit to the complete conversion to whet their appetites. On the contrary, BF Performance understands that unique automobiles are owned by unique individuals, and will gladly work with clients to develop their vehicles to their personal specifications. In 2008, this level of personal service will be available to North American clients, as BF Performance will introduce a sales and service network in the US and Canada in March.

Street Ducati Announces the 848 Superbike!

16 16

848 Superbike

As agile and light as a Supersport, as powerful as a Superbike The words ‘agile’ and ‘refined’ aptly describe Ducati’s new 2008 848. At 369lbs the 848 is an amazing 44lbs lighter than its predecessor, and a significant 11lbs lighter than its larger capacity brother, the 1098. The new 848 enjoys all the performance advancements of the entire Superbike family, while adding its own innovations to redefine the middleweight sport bike class. With the first twist of the wrist, the powerful rush of the Testastretta Evoluzione engine confirms that the rules have changed. The 848’s 134hp is not only 30% more powerful than its predecessor, but it provides a power-to-weight ratio even better than the potent 999. In addition, the powerplant produces a staggering amount of torque at 9.8kgm (96Nm) at 8250 rpm. The new 848 Testastretta Evoluzione engine becomes the benchmark for the middleweight sportsbike category, benefiting from all the experience accumulated with the larger engine on the 1098. Itsuccessfully adopts the same design guidelines and 18

the same compactcylinder and cylinder head layout, but introduces for the first time ever an innovative solution for the crankcase, which has been designed with a further weight reduction for this advanced engine in mind. The overall layout of this engine integrates a series of avant-garde solutions, confirming the close links with the experience of Ducati’s racing department. The cylinder head has been modified in line with the characteristic bore and stroke of the engine in order to optimize the fluid dynamics of the intake (straight and plunging) and exhaust ducts and combustion chamber. The compression ratio is 12:1. The valve angle is the same as the 1098 engine and diameter is 39.5mm for the inlet valve and 32mm for the exhaust. The technology used sees the application of a bi-metallic alloy that combines increased lightness with resistance and reliability required for these particular components. The desmodromic control system has also been designed with the weight and the inertia of the new components in mind, allowing extremely efficient valve lift during intake and exhaust phases. The excellent results achieved are confirmed by the engine’s power figures, producing outstanding performance thanks also to the use of MotoGP-derived elliptical

throttle bodies, which have been fitted to the 1098 engine. For the first time ever, this Testastretta Evoluzione engine sees the introduction of a special technology for the construction of the engine crankcase: Vacural casting. This is a forced vacuum die casting method that allows jet characteristics to be improved thanks to the absence of porosity, gas inclusion and oxidation. This allows extremely high measurement precision and greater ductility for aluminum alloy. Designers have been able to harness the benefits of this innovative process by redefining the shape and the wall thickness of the new crankcase by means of FEA (Finite Element Analysis) checks, which allowed the required reliability standards to be achieved, while simulta-

neously obtaining a significant weight saving of around 7.7 lbs. The high power figures achieved by this engine also come from the use of the same type of oil cooler and coolant radiator as the 1098’s engine, with an increased surface area assisted by lightweight, high flow electric fan assemblies. Finally, the 848’s exhaust system follows the same layout and uses the same innovative technology as the 1098. The system terminates with Ducati’s trademark twin under-seat silencers, delivering the unmistakable signature sound of the big bore 90° L-Twin. Supporting the massive engine and developed in cooperation with Ducati Corse, the 848 Trellis frame has a simplified tube layout featuring main section tubes increased in diameter

from 28mm to 34mm, while being reduced in thickness from 2mm to 1.5mm. The result is a 14% increase in rigidity and a weight saving of 3.3lbs. The 848, as all the Superbike family, is equipped with a unique single-sided swingarm. The engineers were encouraged to re-think the construction technique of this element. The solution was to produce the main operational components using individual aluminum castings so as to ensure strength around the pivot points, wheel hub and suspension links, with fabricated aluminum sections used to complete the construction into a single, beautifully engineered component. Highlighting the way in which individual components are influenced by each other, the new lightweight Trellis frame and single-sided swingarm have enabled a more compact and further weight-saving rear suspension linkage system to be used featuring separate lower pick-up points for the push-rod and suspension unit. This ‘tandem’ design

effectively reduces stress around the linkage pick-up area of the Trellis frame. Working together with this highly efficient linkage is a fully adjustable Showa single shock for the 848, the same as the 1098. At the front, the new 848 is equipped with fully adjustable 43mm Showa forks with radial mounts. This type of front suspension is professionally track-tuned and offers superior road holding, delivers superior feedback, and helps every rider to be more confident and in control. In addition, M4 calipers using four 32mm pistons and two radial mounted pads characterize the 848’s brake system. Matched to the calipers are two 320mm discs and the combination of these elements achieves spectacular braking power. As with all of the motorcycles in Ducati’s lineup, the 898 is a phenomenal example of intelligent design and the matchless engineering. For more information, please visit

combination of letters that has specific connotations. The “G” alludes to the archetypal cross-country vehicle, the “L” intimates luxury and, as in other Mercedes model series, the “K” stands for compactness (German: Kompaktheit). At first sight these three aspects may appear to be mutually incompatible. But on closer inspection they offer the perfect combination as Mercedes-Benz takes its SUV expertise and launches it in a whole new dimension – in the exciting Vision GLK FREESIDE. In January 2008 this compact character made its world debut at the Detroit Auto Show, providing a vision of the shape of SUVs to come. The Vision GLK FREESIDE, now close to series production, has a distinctive design and combines typical SUV characteristics such as robustness and off-road capability with refined motoring characteristics on “normal” roads. The AGILITY CONTROL suspension ensures excellent handling dynamics and agility, coupled with excellent ride comfort and pioneering active safety. A high-strength bodyshell forms the backbone of this model and also ensures other key characteristics: the driving stability and virtual absence of vibration and noise, whatever the conditions, are compelling, and the passive safety, as you expect from the brand, is of the highest standard. The economical and environmentally friendly newgeneration BLUETEC four-cylinder engine, combined with the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission and

mercedes-benz the new 4MATIC all-wheel drive, ensures highly appealing performance. The compact concept vehicle, measuring 14.80 ft in length, also boasts technology usually reserved for higher vehicle classes. Features not only include the anticipatory PRESAFE® safety concept and the Intelligent Light System (ILS), but also the intuitively controlled COMAND APS infotainment centre, a rear-seat entertainment system with two screens and THERMOTRONIC 3-zone automatic climate control. Extremely attractive in stylistic terms, this vision of a future compact SUV, a vehicle packed with character, succeeds by combining the angular design of the original G-Class with typical design features from the contemporary Mercedes-Benz passenger car range. The interior of the Vision GLK FREESIDE complements the expressive body design and impresses with high-quality materials and an ergonomically coherent overall concept, instantly conveying that typical Mercedes ambience. The Vision GLK FREESIDE is to undergo its first test of character at the NAIAS in Detroit. “The Vision GLK illustrates the logical way in which our extremely successful model strategy can be con-

tinued in the SUV segment,” commented Dr Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG. Dr Zetsche has a very close connection with the compact and distinctive Vision GLK FREESIDE, based on his time as a vehicle developer back in the mid-1980s. One of Dr Zetsche’s areas of responsibility at that time was the development of the legendary G-Class. Looking back, he explained, “The needs profiles are different now. But there’s one thing that hasn’t changed: if a Mercedes has a G in its name, it has to perform exceptionally in all conditions.”

Porsche Power The New 420 horsepower Porsche 911 GT3 Cup

911 GT3 Cup

he new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is entering the 2008 motorsport season with engine output increased to 420 bhp. The car will be raced in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup, the world’s fastest international brand trophy, and worldwide in national Porsche Carrera Cups and GT3 Cup Challenges. 265 units of this production-based racing car developed in Weissach will be built on Porsche’s production line in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, marking a new record for a car of this category. The most significant modification compared with last year’s model is the new rear end following the design of the production model. Air venting slits ensure better dissipation of heat at the rear. The 3.6-litre six-cylinder boxer engine developed in Weissach is also based on the street-legal GT3 and develops maximum output of 420 bhp, 20 horsepower more than on the previous model. The sequential six-speed transmission with interruption of engine power enables the driver to shift up under full throttle without disengaging the clutch. The transmission itself has been optimised and the gear ratios adjusted to the characteristics of the engine.

Weighing 2,530 lbs. in race trim, the new 911 GT3 Cup has a power-to-weight ratio of 5.9 lbs. per horsepower. The 26 units of the 911 GT3 Cup built for the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup feature a special exhaust system with an even more striking sound pattern reminiscent of the Formula 1 racing scene as well as PCCB Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes as exclusive highlights. Compared with conventional brake discs, PCCB reduces unsprung masses by 44 lbs. and sets new standards in terms of responsiveness, resistance to fading, and a long service life. The racing cars entered worldwide in the Carrera Cup feature a modified exhaust system and steel brake discs. Porsche’s Racing Department in Weissach is responsible for the fine-tuning and running in the 911 GT3 Cup cars. Deliveries will be directly from Weissach, depending on the country of destination and the schedules to be observed. While the cars for the Carrera Cup New Zealand have already been shipped, delivery of the racing cars for the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup and the Carrera Cup Germany is scheduled for early March 2008.

2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1: the most powerful and fastest automobile ever produced by General Motors 36

Corvette ZR1

hevrolet has officially announced the 2009 Corvette ZR1. The project has been rumored for months, known internally as the “Blue Devil” named so for GM CEO Rick Wagoner’s alma mater, Duke University, and may just have the power to breathe new life back into the Motor City. Built as an all American supercar, the ‘09 ZR1 will bring the technology and engineering refinement of carbon fiber, ceramics and electronics together in a distinctive, yet alluring, design. Ed Peper, general manager for Chevrolet, explained, “Preliminarytesting shows the ZR1 builds on the highly respected Corvette Z06 in every performance category, from acceleration and braking, to cornering grip and top speed. It all boils down to the power-to-weight ratio and the ZR1’s is exceptional—better than the Porsche 911 GT2, the Ferrari 599 and even the Lamborghini LP640. In fact, the ZR1 is expected to be the first production Corvette to achieve a top speed of at least 200 mph.”

The Corvette ZR1 relies on an all-new LS9 supercharged 6.2L V-8 targeted at producing at least 100 horsepower per liter and approximately 595 lb.-ft. of torque with a six-speed close-ratio race hardened manual transmission. The LS9 is hand-assembled at GM’s Performance Build Center, in Wixom, Mich., and incorporates specialty processes typically seen in racing engines to produce a highly refined and precise product. The enabler of the LS9’s performance and refinement is a large, positive-displacement Roots-type supercharger with a new, four-lobe rotor design. It is augmented with an integrated charge cooling system that reduces inlet air temperature for maximum performance. A sixthgeneration supercharger developed by Eaton helps the LS9 make big power and torque at lower rpm and carries it in a wide arc to 6,600 rpm, as it pushes enough air to help the engine maintain power through the upper levels of the rpm band—the area where supercharged performance tends to diminish. Facilitated by the close-ratio transmis-

Corvette ZR1

sion, heavy-duty and lightweight reciprocating components enable the engine’s confident high-rpm performance. The LS9 engine is backed by a new, stronger six-speed manual transmission and a twin-disc clutch that provide exceptional clamping power, while maintaining an easy clutch effort. ZR1-specific gearing in the transmission provides a steep first-gear ratio that helps launch the car, and top speed is achieved in sixth gear—a change from the fifthgear top-speed run-outs in the manual-transmission Corvette and Corvette Z06. This setup is much more common in race tuned vehicles, and definitely helps allow the LS9 engine to perform optimally. Magnetic Selective Ride Control is standard and tuned specifically for the ZR1. The system’s ability to deliver a compliant ride with nearly instantaneous damping adjustments enabled engineers to develop a surprisingly supple ride quality in a supercar that still delivers cornering grip of more than 1g. From a high-performance perspective, Magnetic Selective Ride Control helps the rear axle remain planted

during launch for smooth, hop-free acceleration. It also helps suppress axle movement when cornering on broken or uneven pavement. Commensurate with the ZR1’s engine output is the braking system, which is headlined by carbon-ceramic brake rotors. Found on only a few exotics and more expensive supercars, carbon-ceramic brake rotors are made of a carbon-fiber-reinforced ceramic silicon carbide material. Their advantage comes in low mass and resistance to wear and heat. In fact, the rotors should never show any corrosion or require replacement for the life of the vehicle, when used in normal driving. The vented and cross-drilled rotors on the ZR1 measure 15.5 inches (394 mm) in diameter in the front and 15 inches (380 mm) in diameter in the rear—making them among the largest carbon-ceramic rotors available on any production vehicle. Clamping down on the hightech rotors are six-piston front calipers and four-piston rear calipers painted a ZR1-exclusive blue. The exterior design received equal attention, creating a silhou

ette that is instantly recognizable. Perhaps the most identifiable feature is a raised, all-carbon-fiber hood that incorporates a clear, polycarbonate window. The window provides a view of the top of the engine’s intercooler, with the legend—LS9 SUPERCHARGED— embossed on the left and right sides and an engine cover with the Corvette crossed flags logo at the front. The underside of the hood has an exposed carbon-fiber-weave, calling attention to the vehicle’s track-like performance. Exposed carbon fiber is also used on the roof, roof bow, rocker molding and front splitter. These exterior components are protected by a specially developed glossy, UV-resistant clear coat that resists yellowing and wear. The ZR1 also features widened, carbon-fiber front fenders with specific, dual lower vents, and a full-width, body-color rear spoiler incorporating the center high-mounted stop lamp. All of the exterior features of the car were developed to enhance high-speed

stability and driver control, yet also enhance the vehicle’s appeal. Inside, The ZR1’s interior builds on the brand’s dual-cockpit heritage, with high-quality materials, craftsmanship and functionality that support the premium-quality experience promised by the vehicle’s performance. “Chevrolet’s goal with the new ZR1 is to show what an American supercar can deliver, at a price that trumps exotics that cost two, three or four times as much and does so with exceptional drivability.” Said Peper. In addition to the vehicle’s appealing price, the ZR1’s specialized components work harmoniously to make it the most powerful and fastest automobile ever produced by General Motors. Performance estimates will be announced closer to vehicle’s summer 2008 launch.

make a bold statement. At first glance, this modern machine is often intimidating, however it seems to grow on you the more and more you try to resist its infinite beauty. We like to compare it to a work of art, where beauty is in the eye of the beholder. With its flawless appearance and eye-catching contours, its no surprise that people are turning their heads, gazing in admiration as this seductive beast hits the roads. We have heard some refer the WALD CL to having a “Knight Rider” look, and even some resemblance of a car Darth Vadar would choose for himself. Indeed, those opinions are befitting since the styling was made for people who exude mystique, influence, and aggressive appeal. Enter the Black Bison, WALD’s name for its CL creation. The Black Bison encompasses a front half bumper with quad angel-

eye fog lamps, replacement sport front fenders, a side skirt set, aerodynamic roof and trunk wing and a rear bumper replacement with quad-tip sport exhaust system. Matching wheel sets includes a set of lightweight 22-inch 9.5/9.5 WALD P11F forged wheels, exquisitely embossed with the Portofino insignia, which carries a Pirelli PZero Nero 245/30-22 front and 285/25-22 rear. For those lucky enthusiasts, the first Black Bison debuted at the 2007 SEMA show in Las Vegas, which featured a brilliant silver CL built by Kartoyz of San Jose, CA. The WALD CL received high marks for its unique and innovative design, boosting its appeal to the international market. Ultimately, WALD has earned a solid reputation and is growing in popularity in the high end luxury market. For more information and availability: Jonari Corporation 650-343-9253.

ecum is relocating its founding Belvidere Spring Classic Auction to the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Indiana. The auction has traditionally been held in Illinois over Memorial Day weekend. According to CEO Dana Mecum, “The 2008 event will be held one week earlier May 15th, 16th, 17th & 18th and return to its original name, Dana Mecum’s Spring Classic. The auction takes place one week prior to the Indianapolis 500. The facility at the Indiana State Fairgrounds and encompasses four buildings that are joined together and will have over 400,000 square feet under roof. “Every car consigned, be it $10,000 or $1,000,000, will have the red carpet treatment” says Mecum. The top three reasons the move has been initiated are: Facility: The new location offers a weatherproof environment, paved parking and all cars under roof. Mecum says “Even though we had over seven acres of tents in the past, the weather brought undesirable conditions. Our number one customer concern is that we have a proper parking environment.” Market Proximity: Indianapolis is located in close proximity to ma48

jor metropolitan areas including: Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, Chicago, Champaign, Bloomington, Dayton, Detroit, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Lexington, Louisville, Peoria, Springfield, and St. Louis. Upcoming TV Series: Eight episodes over seven weeks will deliver live auction coverage in High Definition on a major cable network beginning Saturday, March 29, 2008. Six episodes of smaller 100-car auctions will build up to the 1,000-car Grand Finale episode (Dana Mecum’s Spring Classic). CEO Mecum and key staff members will be in Scottsdale, Arizona January 19th and 20th for a public preview of the Christenholz Collection consisting of 21 world-class muscle cars and 150 vintage signs to be sold at Dana Mecum’s Spring Classic. JEAN DUNAND Pièces Uniques

EAN DUNAND Pièces Uniques was founded in 2003 by watchmaker Christophe Claret, Switzerland’s leading inventor and constructor of complicated movements for luxury brands, and entrepreneur Thierry Oulevay. The purpose of both men is to create advanced and unprecedented horological mechanisms as the basis for unique timepieces, each representing the summit of contemporary watchmaking . Thierry Oulevay, an expert in watch design and marketing, gained his experience with Piaget and engineered the successful relaunch of the Bovet brand from 1997 to 2001 with an awardwinning design. He urged Christophe Claret to develop the orbiting tourbillon — an idea many in the watch industry considered impossible. The two men share a fascination for the work of the Swissborn artist, Jean Dunand (1877 – 1942), one of the great craftsmen of the Art Deco movement, and decided to name the brand in his honor. Art Deco celebrated the machine age — speed, streamlining , aircraft, skyscrapers and ocean liners — to the rhythms of George Gershwin’s music. Consecrated at the Par is international exhibition of modern decorative and industrial arts in 1925, Art Deco’s simple geometries captured the image of the twenties and thirties in furniture, typography, industrial design and sculpture. The JEAN DUNAND Pièces Uniques seek to capture the spirit and essence of the Art Deco movement rather than to replicate the watch styles of the period. Art Deco embraced the technologies and new materials of its world, emphasizing high craftsmanship and functional design above all. The styling of JEAN DUNAND watches thus reflects the elite crafts and techniques of today rather than of the past. But the fine workmanship and clean design of Art Deco are, and will always be, fundamental to watchmaking . In the JEAN DUNAND watches, Christophe Claret defines what makes watchmaking an art. Essentially it’s to dream an impossible dream and then to make it work. It requires a spatial imagination to configure forces, levers, springs and wheels into mechanical solutions that have never been done before. His stake in the JEAN DUNAND brand gives Christophe Claret the outlet for his prodigious skills and imagination in works that rep-

resent the highest levels of contemporary horology. As a Pièce Unique, decorations and mater ials are different for each timepiece introduced to the market. The styling of the watch is however always consistent w ith Art Deco ideals of simple geometries, functional design and high craftsmanship in precious materials. Each JEAN DUNAND Pièce Unique is thus an integral and contemporary work of art, and a truly unique piece. The watch collector is guaranteed an unparalleled level of exclusivity. The finish is essential dimension of the watchmaking art, and as such it must be impeccable and comprehensive. The graining, chamfering and polishing of the movement are done entirely by hand. The sharp, inner ang le of a chamfered edge, for example, cannot be done by machine. The artwork and decoration of the case are similarly executed to the highest standard. Next to the Grande Complication and the Tourbillon Orbital, Thierry Oulevay and Christophe Claret are proud to present their new world premier Shabaka.

Tourbillon Orbital The Tourbillon Orbital, the first of the JEAN DUNAND Pièces Uniques and an achievement never before seen in watchmaking, features a one minute flying tourbillon that or bits the dial once an hour on a revolving movement. The watch also introduces a novel power-reserve indicator in the caseband, provides a new view of the movement and displays the phases of the moon on the caseback. This extraordinary movement is patent-protected. Reinstating the tourbillon as a precision device The Io 200 movement (named after Jupiter’s moon) constructed by Christophe Claret confounds the opinion of his fellow watchmakers that an orbiting tourbillon was impossible to realize. Furthermore, it returns the tourbillon to its original role as a precision device. Timing tests show that the combined rotation of the tourbillon and the movement significantly improves the rate stability of the watch. Wheels within w heels The barrel and the flying tourbillon (set opposite each other) or bit the center, sandwiched between two plates held apart by pillars and rotating on ball bearings. The top plate constitutes the revolving dial, with an aperture to reveal the tourbillon. The tourbillon has been raised as much as possible to make it more easily seen. The barrel unwinds against a central fixed pinion, driving itself and the tourbillon around. The tourbillon escapement regulates the speed of rotation. As it or bits, the tourbillon cage rotates once a minute against a fixed circumference wheel through a train of wheels. This elegant configuration reduces the number of jewel bearings to 14, substantially cutting friction. 52

How to wind and set a rotating movement It took Christophe Claret two years to work out the mechanical solutions to winding and setting a rotating movement with a mainspring barrel that never stays in one place. The conventional crown through the caseband is obviously impossible. The solution of winding and setting the movement vertically through its central axis is new to watchmaking. A folding key set into the caseback replaces the crown. Lifting the D-ring of the key engages a central wheel on ball bearings that turns the ratchet-wheel to wind the barrel-spring . Pulling out the key connects the motion work of the hours- and minutes-hands to set them in any direction. Set against the fixed chapter-ring , the minutes-hand turns with the rotating dial. Windows to the hear t of the movement The winding key and the moon-phase display on the back of the watch prevent a conventional view of the rotating movement through a sapphire-crystal caseback. But the absence of the usual crown at 3 o’clock allowed the casemakers to provide a fascinating lateral view of the revolving mechanisms by cutting two windows in the caseband. A power-reserve indicator never seen before The side windows opened the oppor tunit y for another first in watchmaking — an entirely original way of indicating the power reserve. The window at 3 o’clock displays a vertical needle that moves between F (full) and E (empty) like the fuel gauges in vintage cars. The secret of indicating the power-reserve in one place from a constantly moving barrel is patented.

JEAN DUNAND Pièces Uniques Shabaka JEAN DUNAND presents a feat of micro-engineering complexity in its 2007 super watch — a minute-repeater on cathedral gongs and an instantaneous perpetual calendar with a unique display of the dates, phases of the moon and leap-year cycle, as well as an ingenious stateofwind indicator. The originality of this impressive timepiece is in the calendar indications on four cylinders instead of the conventional discs. These are rotated by four different 90-degree transmission systems, each fitted with a security device to ensure precise calendar changes. Furthermore, unlike in most calendar indications, the dates (two digits on separate cylinders), days and months jump instantaneously at midnight, when a sprung mechanism is released. The indication of the leap-year cycle is also novel: a white plate under the dial illuminates in turn the letter B (for bissextile) and the three ordinary years cut out on the dial between 7 and 8 o’clock. The leapyear is mirrored by the phases of the moon for which black discs travel over the surface of the moon like the shadow of the earth, eclipsing it to the left as it wanes, and revealing it from the right as it waxes. The mechanical moon deviates from the real moon by only one day ever y 120 years. For all the complexity of the calendar indications, the state-ofwind indicator on the back of the watch is absurdly simple yet equally original. A single moving part — the mainspring itself in an open barrel — shows the power reserve of the watch against a scale. The minute-repeater strikes on two cathedral gongs that go twice around the movement to g ive a deeper and more resonant chime. The minute-repeater slide on the left of the case means that the calendar

setting controls are on the r ig ht. Two chronograph-style pushers are used to set the entire calendar (the gold pusher at 4 o’clock) and the days only (at 2 o’clock). A pushpiece set coaxially in the crown advances the months and years, while the moon is set by a pushpiece in the caseband at 5 o’clock. A complex ser ies of levers reaches around the movement from the pushers to activate the respective calendar indications. The caliber is of a par ticular construction, with the per petual-calendar mechanism integrated in the 13-ligne repeating movement. The 7mm-diameter cylinders are embedded 2.5 millimetres into the level of the minute-repeater to reduce further the thickness of the movement. An anthracite-black finish on the circular-grained baseplate and on the bridges decorated in concentric Geneva stripes, contrasts with burnished steel, ruby and gold to highlight the beaut y of the movement presented through the caseback. The original calendar displays are integrated into the stunning geometrical design of the dial — a superb piece of engineering on four levels composed of a nickel-alloy frame delineating fields of blackened gold set with lapped pyramids of pink gold. The red hour-markers at 10, 12 and 2 o’clock serve to indicate the day, date and month respectively, against corresponding red triangles in the centre of the dial. The Art Deco-inspired design, with its Egy ptian influences, is reflected in the exotic name of the watch — Shabaka, the 25th-dynasty pharaoh and king of Egypt. Shabaka is produced by Thierry Oulevay, directed by Chr istophe Claret and manufactured in the Christophe Claret workshops in Le Locle, Switzerland.

V12 Vantage RS

t the official opening of Aston Martin’s first ever dedicated design center in Gaydon, Warwickshire, on Tuesday 11 December, Dr Ulrich Bez, Chief Executive Officer, thrilled an audience of more than seven hundred VIP guests with a surprise unveiling of a stunning new 600bhp performance concept car; the V12 Vantage RS. The V12 Vantage RS concept is based on Aston Martin’s critically acclaimed V8 Vantage coupe, but the company’s design and engineering team have fully exploited the design flexibility of their unique VH architecture and the motor sport development of their 6.0 litre V12 engine to create a dramatic and production feasible concept car focussed on extreme performance and dynamics. In a speech to the assembled guests, Ulrich Bez said: “Over the last five years, we have established a reputation for presenting fully functional, feasible concept cars, and the V12 Vantage RS is no exception. We will listen with interest to feedback on this concept and, as ever, if there is sufficient demand then we will seriously consider a low volume production run in the near future with a price that will

reflect the exclusivity of the car. “With our dedicated production facilities, our own engine plant, our own unique vehicle architecture and now a dedicated design studio, we have the ideal framework to bring new models such as this to market and to further establish Aston Martin as the ultimate independent luxury sports car company.” Although the 600bhp power output of the V12 Vantage RS concept will be the focus of attention, just as significant is the level of weight reduction achieved by Aston Martin’s engineering team. With a kerb weight of less than 3520 lbs, the RS concept underlines Aston Martin’s continued commitment to intelligent use of materials and weight reduction as a means of achieving improved efficiency and performance. In common with the recently launched DBS, the bonnet and trunk lid are moulded in carbon fibre and the concept also adopts motor sport-inspired carbon ceramic brake discs. The subtly aggressive exterior appearance is driven by function. The dramatic bonnet louvres extract air from the fully ducted cooling pack and the trunk lid features a deployable spoiler that rises automatically at high speeds to increase rear down

force. The front bumper features cooling ducts for the carbon ceramic brakes and a carbon fibre splitter to balance down force. Director of Design, Marek Reichman, commented: “Much of Aston Martin’s recent success has come from the ability of our designers and engineers to work hand-in-hand to optimise form and function. Our new dedicated design centre will take this process to a new level and I am delighted that the V12 Vantage RS is the first car to stand on the turntable in the studio.” The 600bhp 6.0 litre engine featured in the V12 Vantage RS concept has benefited directly from the race development of this acclaimed power unit. It features a dry 66

sump lubrication system, tuned length exhaust manifolds, forged pistons and steel con-rods, revised lift and duration camshafts and modified cylinder heads. Peak power is achieved at 6250rpm and peak torque of 508 lbs-ft is at 5000rpm. With a power-to-weight ratio of over 375bhp per ton, the V12 Vantage RS concept is the fastest accelerating road car ever built by the company, capable of reaching 62mph (100km/h) from rest in 4.0 seconds and 100mph (160km/h) in just 8.5 seconds. The unveiling of the Aston Martin V12 Vantage RS concept concludes a remarkable year of new product announcements for the British manufacturer. In the last twelve months the company has launched two of the most eagerly anticipated sports cars of the year – the DBS and Vantage Roadster – and announced details of the DB9 LM and V8 Vantage N400 special editions which celebrate the company’s racing successes at Le Mans and the Nurburgring. All of these models now join the award-winning V8 Vantage, DB9 and DB9 Volante models in production at the company’s Gaydon headquarters.

LRX Concept

Bold Evolution the Land Rover lrx concept makes its debut at the 2008 North American International Auto Show

and Rover just unveiled a vision of its future at the NAIAS (DetroitShow) with the world debut of the LRX concept - a bold evolution of Land Rover design that signals the brand’s shift into new areas of the market, while remaining true to its core values. The three-door LRX, with its more compact size, lighter weight and sustainability-focused technologies, clearly addresses the needs of a changing world. “The LRX concept delivers the powerful message that we are as serious about sustainability as we are confident about the continuing relevance and desirability of our vehicles,” says Phil Popham, Land Rover’s managing director. “LRX is in every respect a Land Rover, but it’s a very different Land Rover. “LRX has unmistakable Land Rover design and the breadth of capability that you’d expect from our vehicles. But it carries those essentials into a segment where the brand has never been before, and with a proposed level of efficiency that would make it one of the cleanest vehicles in its class. It is Land Rover’s way of affirming the brand’s responsible approach to future product development. At this stage, LRX is purely a concept, designed to help us develop our thinking as well as gauge customer reaction - but this feels like a hugely exciting direction to take.” The first all-new Land Rover revealed since Gerry McGovern be-

came the company’s design director, LRX is a natural extension of the Land Rover range, complementing the existing models and helping to define a new segment. LRX is described as a cross-coupé and dramaticallyextends the scope of what Land Rover represents. Its compact size is one of its greatest assets, which will appeal to anyone who wants the versatile ability of an agile 4x4 with the cachet of the Land Rover name. In addition, its lower weight and the reduced aerodynamic drag resulting from the smaller frontal area give significant gains in fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions. It has full-time four-wheel drive and Hill Descent Control, as well as a special version of Land Rover’s acclaimed Terrain Response system, to optimize traction on difficult surfaces ranging from icy roads to wet grass, gravel and snow. But to reflect LRX’s on-road bias, Terrain Response also gains a new ‘Eco’ mode for lower emissions during urban driving. The LRX concept also adopts intelligent power management systems and other technologies first shown by Land Rover in the Land E concept in 2006. The design of LRX was developed entirely in-house, driven by a passion to create a car that truly represents Land Rover’s future thinking. It has a very dynamic profile, with a distinctive taper to the floating roofline and a muscular shoulder running the length of the car, accentuated by the rising beltline. The glazing wraps right around

LRX, with no exposed pillars, creating a bold design graphic. Pushing the wheels out to the four corners helps give the car its purposeful stance, and its front-end design makes a powerful and instantly recognizable statement of Land Rover’s identity. The carefully sculpted corners dramatically reduce the car’s visual overhangs front and rear. With its perforated two-bar grille, door releases concealed in the car’s shoulders and graphic details ‘punched out’ of the smooth body surfaces rather than overlaid on them, the LRX is beautifully proportioned and elegantly simple - but very dramatic and distinctive. The interior of the LRX concept clearly demonstrates how a compact Land Rover can still be roomy, practical, versatile and sophisticated. Every interior design detail combines to maximize both actual space and the feeling of space. The impeccably executed cabin features a combination of soft leathers in rich tan and dark chocolate, with polished aluminum details. The ‘fast’ sloping architecture of the center console reflects LRX’s sporty dynamics, as does the distinctive binnacle over the instrument cluster. The electronic display uses ‘floating’ LCD graphics to create a three-dimensional look that can be personalized for different drivers, as well as interacting with LRX’s touchscreen display. When appropriate, displayed information transfers between the main instrument cluster and the touch screen. Although LRX is compact, clever use of space makes it impressively roomy, and many design touches maximize its practical-

ity. There is a coolbox, plus a bottle chiller that can be clipped to the lowered tailgate with cup holders between two padded seating areas giving a new twist to the tailgate lunch. “Flexible load-carrying capacity is fundamental to the concept of LRX,” says Gerry McGovern. “With this car, we’ve interpreted the idea of Land Rover ‘breadth of capability’ to be more about versatility and on-road dynamics than about ultimate off-roading. This meets the needs of the new customers that we believe would be attracted by this type of car; they will not only appreciate LRX’s flexibility, but will also recognize that it has been packaged with the highest levels ofprecision.”
