HANDBAG IN HISTORY

BIRKIN: OS 40 ANOS DA MALA MAIS ICÓNICA DA HISTÓRIA

03

By 1983, Jane Birkin, a stunningly beautiful English woman, was already famous, as a fashion model, actress and songwriter, and also known for her Haute-Hippie style and her free spirit. A left over from the collective counter-culture behaviour of the 1960s that was the hippie movement. The famously fringed sex symbol formed one of the most romantic couples ever with French musician, painter and poet Serge Gainsbourg (1928-1991). Their combined voices are immortalized in the ballad “Je t’aime... moi non plus”, a song that was banned in Portugal during the Salazar dictatorship, because it was considered offensive –and even today, the song causes controversy all over the world.

In the early 1980s, by the age of 37, Jane Birkin already had a successful international career in independent film. She had married and divorced John Barry, English composer and arranger of the original theme song for the James Bond films; she had also fallen in and out of love with Gainsbourg; and had adopted the Parisian charm style as her daily dress code, which not only became iconic but also timeless. Jane Birkin was already all of the above and had therefore earned a place in the collective imagination of those who love cinema, music and fashion. At this time, the bags of Hermès, the French company founded in 1837 by Thierry Hermès, were still just bags.

Until one day in 1983, when Jane Birkin bumped into Jean-Louis Dumas (1938-2010), former President of the Hermès Group, on a scheduled flight from Paris to London. The millionaire businessman was settled in his seat when the girl, already elevated to the status of European muse, dropped a straw basket containing all her personal belongings. Dumas helped her regather each object and asked her: “What would the perfect handbag be for a woman like Birkin?” And she, a woman but also a mother, replied: “It would be four times bigger than the Hermès bag named after Grace Kelly. It could be used every day and even open-ended, to carry larger items.” Dumas then challenged her to draw a sketch of this ideal handbag. Birkin accepted the request, using a pencil to draw on an airsickness paper bag. And thus unexpectedly, the first Birkin was born. A handbag that is not just a handbag, but a cult item made from the skin of rare Himalayan crocodiles.

IN 2024, THE BIRKIN TURNS 40. BUT THE HERMÈS BAG IS NOT JUST A HANDBAG; IT IS A STATUS SYMBOL AND A LIFESTYLE STATEMENT. DISCOVER THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD’S MOST COVETED FASHION ACCESSORY. EM 2024, A BIRKIN FAZ 40 ANOS. MAS A MALA DA HERMÈS NÃO É SÓ UMA MALA, É DEMONSTRAÇÃO DE STATUS E SÍMBOLO DE LIFESTYLE. CONHEÇA A HISTÓRIA DO ACESSÓRIO DE MODA MAIS COBIÇADO DO MUNDO.

Officially created in 1984 and made out of leather and canvas, the Birkin has remained one of the world’s most coveted fashion accessories for an astonishing almost 40 years. Anyone wishing to purchase one of its many original models has to be patient. First you have to be prepared to go onto a waiting list that can span over many months, or even years. You then have to be willing to pay a sum of money that varies between 10,000 and 35,000 euros. It is not possible to make the purchase via the brand’s website, only in person, from one of the approximately 300 shops that can be found worldwide. Additionally, you have to prove that you have already purchased several other pieces from the brand, since Hermès does not allow a Birkin to be the first or only purchase of a client. Even if you happen to complete these three steps successfully, you are not guaranteed the bag will be of your chosen colour or material!

Some choose to buy a secondhand Birkin, but these handbags can sometimes fetch more than a new one. An example of this can be found from a sale held in May 2022 via the Vestiaire Collective platform. This trading portal for second-hand fashion items sold a Birkin Faubourg for no less than 158,000 euros. This impressive figure surpassed the previous record, which had been achieved six months earlier, also by a Birkin by Hermès. That handbag sold for 112,000 euros. Unsurprisingly, that is a record hotly contested by auction houses. The most expensive, encrusted with 245 diamonds, cost 267,000 euros and was sold by Christie’s in Hong Kong.

There are three defining factors that distinguish a Birkin bag: it has to be big enough to carry

everything you need; elegant enough to be used at a sophisticated party; and casual enough to be used on a shopping trip. In other words, a flexible bag that can adapt to any situation, eliminating the need for that endless swapping of handbags and their contents, a task that Jane Birkin didn’t enjoy. Just as, or perhaps more importantly, all the bags are handmade by artisans who are required to attend a five-year training course. From here on out, everything is a secret. To this day, Hermès has never disclosed how many bags it produces each year, nor where it gets the raw materials to make them or how it achieves those unique colours.

However, not everything Birkin bag related is a bed of roses. Unlike most collectors, such as Kris Kardashian, for example, who had a bespoke wardrobe made to display all her Birkins, Jane Birkin says she has only ever had five or six Birkins in her life, and uses them until all the patches have worn out. In 2015, she demanded that Hermès remove her name from the handbag. This particular issue was a report by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), denouncing the violent killing of crocodiles, so that their skin could be used in luxury handbags. This was precisely the case with the Birkin bag – to make just one handbag you need the skins of three of these animals.

Birkin on animal protection

“Having been alerted to the cruel practices suffered by crocodiles during their slaughter for the production of the Hermès bags that bear my name, I have asked the Hermès group to rebrand Birkin until better practices are implemented that meet international standards,” wrote the singer, then 68, in a statement that was disseminated worldwide. Almost ten years later, that still hasn’t happened, because Hermès guaranteed that the problem was resolved: therefore, the Birkin remains the Birkin, an object that encapsulates several love stories and represents one of the most unattainable objects of desire in the world of luxury. Unattainable for some, because Victoria Beckham claims to have over 100.

A partir daqui, tudo é segredo.

Five other handbags that have immortalised women

There are five handbags – both in the imagery associated with luxury, and in the real market of accessories that embody the utmost exclusivity – that do not reach the same level of desirability as the Birkin, but are equally iconic and definitely timeless.

1. Jackie – Gucci

Tribute to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, wife of John F. Kennedy. A handbag in the shape of a half-moon, whose design, colour, clasp and material constituted a revolution in the handbag industry.

2. Lady – Christian Dior

The brand rebranded it after former French First Lady Bernadette Chirac gave one to Princess Diana, who liked it so much that she was seen wearing it several times.

2.55 – Chanel

Rectangular bag design, created by Gabrielle Chanel in 1955. Inspired by the bags used by postmen during World War II and associated with love letters.

5. Kelly – Hermès

Popularised by the glamorous actress Grace Kelly who showed it off in Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller “Thief in a Coat” and wore it several times as Princess Grace of Monaco.

PORTO

A PARTIR DO CÉU FROM ABOVE 10
11

TO CLIMB HUNDREDS OF STEPS, YOU WILL DISCOVER A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PORTO

FROM THE ONE YOU THINK YOU ALREADY KNOW.

There are seven viewpoints which reveal an (even) more impressive city.

Porto’s history is written in the names of the streets, engrained in the local neighbourhoods, distinguished in its modern architecture, preserved in the secrets of the staircases, embedded in the tiles on the façades of the houses, romanticised in the preservation of the Fernandine walls, the cliffs and the river Douro. It is impossible to stroll through Porto without looking upwards, at the bridges and the towers and the old buildings. We propose you do the opposite: climb to the highest points, to get to know the city from above. You will see a new city emerge before your eyes. Plus, you don’t even need a drone. All you need to do is visit our seven recommended viewpoints. We wish you a good trip and happy discovering.

Torre dos Clérigos 225 steps

The Torre dos Clérigos is 75 metres tall (a quarter of the height of the Eiffel Tower), 272 years old, with 225 spiral steps to the top and is the tallest and best known monument in the city of Porto. The project was designed in the 18th century by Nicolau

Nasoni, an Italian architect who even chose to be buried there. The work was inaugurated in 1750 and classified as a National Monument in 1910. From the balcony surrounding the bell tower, you can see the entire city, from the centre to the mouth of the river Douro. The view is especially stunning at sunset. However, it is also worth investigating the church and the tower itself, as together they form one of the most beautiful examples of the baroque style in Portugal. Also, listen out for the sound of the 49 bells, which have been ringing out across the city since 1995, a rare event in the country.

Crystal Palace

196 steps

The Crystal Palace, renamed Super Bock Arena in 2019, is a stunning building whose copper-green dome, studded with small skylights, is visible from various points of the city. This magnificent dome has 196 steps, which place it at a height of 30 metres above the ground. Those brave enough to scale the narrow concrete steps will be able to view the Crystal Palace Gardens from above, as well as some of the well-known areas of Porto such as Boavista, Ribeira, Foz and even the Arrábida Bridge, which crosses the Douro River. Looking across the river gives a panoramic view of Vila Nova de Gaia.

As private visits are not possible, the walk up to the arena roof includes a guided tour inside the building, which includes the story of the controversial demolition of the granite, iron and glass palace, inspired by London’s Crystal Palace, to make way for the Sports Pavilion in 1951. Tours take 40 minutes and are not available to children under 12 years of age.

Porto.

262 steps

In 1963, this remarkable feat of engineering, designed by Edgar Cardoso, was inaugurated with excitement and trepidation as the bridge with, at 270 metres, the longest reinforced concrete span in the world.

Up until 2016, its elegant lines could only be enjoyed from the ground. Since then, the beautiful arch that crosses the Douro is the only one of its kind in Europe that can be visited. The bridge is 65 metres above the river and you have to climb 262 steps to enjoy one of the most unforgettable views of the city.

On a full-moon lit night, it is possible to make this a night-time visit and sometimes sunrise climbs are also available. These visits, for people over 12 years old, take place from the half-arch on the Porto side. From there you can see everything from on high. You can see part of the Luís I Bridge, and the towers of the Marquês church, of the Clérigos church, of the Cathedral, as well as the RTP station mast are in view. Even the mountains can be seen in the distance. The Arrábida Bridge was classified as a national monument in 2013.

Casa da Música

40 metres tall

The VIP Terrace, as it is known, is the highest part of the intriguing building designed by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, who has since been awarded the Pritzker Prize. Initially, this terrace was designed to be a technical area, but as work took shape, the architect changed his mind and the space, with its superb view, was included as part of the Casa da Música’s public walkway.

Guardian” selected the Casa da Música, inaugurated in 2005, as “one of the most emblematic cultural buildings of the century”. The building, built at the top of Avenida da Boavista, comprises 17 sides and is 40 metres tall, and celebrates the year in which the city of Porto was elected European Capital of Culture in 2001. Two guided tours are held per day, lasting one hour each, and include a visit to each floor, including the Artists’ Bar, the magnificent Suggia Hall, the Choir, the 17-metre high wavy glass East Foyer and, of course, the VIP terrace.

Cruise Terminal of Leixões Harbour

30 metres tall

From which ever point we look at the award-winning Cruise Terminal for the Port of Leixões, in Matosinhos, we always come to the same conclusion: the building, with a height of 30 metres, 800 metres from the coastline, is absolutely extraordinary. What’s more, this bold architectural work designed by the architect Luís Pedro Silva can be visited from the outside. Once you get to the amphitheatre on the roof, the view over the Atlantic Ocean is impossible to describe. Unsurprisingly, some call it “a UFO out of water”. But there are also those who prefer to say it looks like a rosebud.

To visit this orthogonal work it is necessary to book in advance. However, it has a restaurant, from which it is possible to exit onto the outdoor ramp that leads to the top of the roof. Among many other distinctions, this terminal won ArchDaily’s international award in the category of Best Public Building in 2017.

Escadas dos Guindais

290 steps

The city of Porto was built from the Fernandine Walls, which ran from the riverside area of the Douro River to the highest part of the Sé and Vitória parishes. This explains the number of existing staircases that have resisted time, unlike the earlier medieval walls, which have all but been destroyed. One of the most emblematic sets of steps is the Guindais staircase, right next to the Luís I Bridge, which connects the areas of Ribeira do Porto and Praça da Batalha. Next to it, there is a café-patio offering a stunning view of the bridge and across the river to Gaia and the Port wine cellars. Venturing up the 290 steps reveals the Funicular dos Guindais, built in 1891 and renovated in 1994. The trip on the funicular is short, but worth it.

Serra do Pilar

85 metres high

To end on a high note, cross the Douro River, via the Luis I Bridge, and climb up to the Serra do Pilar Monastery.

Porto seen from Vila Nova de Gaia takes on another dimension. From here the city is literally at your feet, from the colourful riverside houses on the Porto side and the historic port wine cellars on the Gaia side, to the Arrábida Bridge. However, the panorama is actually much more comprehensive. Apart from the boats sailing along the Douro, you can also see the bridges, especially the iconic Luis I Bridge,

designed by Théophile Seyrig, a student of Gustave Eiffel.

Climb up to Serra do Pilar, day or night, because it’s always worth it and you’ll never be alone. There will always be someone walking around or photographing this fascinating scenic view.

If you can, visit Serra do Pilar at dusk to watch an unforgettable sunset.

The Serra do Pilar Monastery, the Luís I Bridge and the Historic Centre of Oporto were classified as UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1996.

LOVE GOLF? HERE ARE 7 COURSES NOT TO BE MISSED É AMANTE DE GOLFE? ESTES SÃO OS 7 CAMPOS QUE NÃO PODE PERDER
ALGARVE

The Algarve has been rated by specialist golf magazines as well as international golf associations as one of the best golfing destinations not only in Europe but the world, for several consecutive years. The south is home to the best golf courses in the country. The Mediterranean climate, ideal for outdoor activities, and the real estate on offer in luxury resorts make this region an unbeatable spot for investment, relaxation and leisure at any time of year.

The Algarve’s golf resorts offer quality, exceptional facilities, awardwinning golf courses, a range of services, hospitality, proximity to beaches and dream properties. There are places of rare beauty because most of the courses are set in conservation areas, with stunning views and, in many cases, overlook the Atlantic Ocean. They are internationally renowned for the quality of their facilities, with course architecture by prestigious players and legendary champions such as Sir Henry Cotton, Rocky Roquemore, Arnold Palmer and Ronald Frea.

If you love playing golf and are looking for that perfect paradise to play, while enjoying a holiday or retirement, you don’t need to be a golfing champion, you just need the right place. LUXIMOS Christie’s Magazine is here to help you discover the 7 most irresistible golf courses in Southern Portugal.

Royal Golf Course, in Vale do Lobo: the famous 16th hole

Strategically surrounded by lakes and lush pine trees and wild flowers, the Royal Golf Course in Vale do Lobo is one of the most prestigious and popular golf courses in the country. It was designed by the American architect and designer Rocky Roquemore - perhaps the greatest golf course designer in the world - who based his design on original drawings by Sir Henry Cotton. The course features a Par 3, with an island green at the 9th hole, and the famous 16th hole, exceptionally located over the cliffs, with the sea as a backdrop, making it one of the most photographed in Europe. It also benefits from being situated next to the Algarve’s most stunning beaches and surrounded by unique villas. It is the ideal location for those looking for a place to retire.

If you love playing golf and are looking for that perfect paradise to practice in all year round, Algarve has some of the most sought-after golf courses in Europe.

Monte

Rei Golf &

Country Club: luxury on the other side of the Algarve

Beyond Faro and on the other, more genuine, less hectic, but no less impressive, side of the Algarve lies Monte Rei Golf & Country Club. Voted the Best Golf Club in Portugal in 2017, through the Leadingcourses.com platform, it is one of the highest rated by players. The iconic golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus, along with its exclusive services, impeccable quality facilities and luxury properties, make visiting this Country Club an unforgettable experience.

Located in Vila Nova de Cacela, this 18-hole golf course, over 400 hectares, is ideal for golf lovers and families seeking to combine sport with tranquillity. The cherry on the cake can be found at the centre of the resort: the Vistas restaurant, the first to receive a Michelin star on this side of the Algarve.

Monte Rei Golf & Country Club: o luxo no outro lado do Algarve

A cereja no topo do bolo surge no centro do resort: o restaurante Vistas, o primeiro a receber uma estrela Michelin deste lado do Algarve.

21

Amendoeira Golf Resort: the one to play at night

In the heart of the Algarve, you will find the three Amendoeira Golf Resort golf courses. The award-winning Faldo Course, designed by Sir Nick Faldo, three times Masters champion and three times British Open champion. It is also home to the challenging O’Connor Jnr. course which stretches across a valley dotted with lakes and streams. In addition to these two award-winning 18-hole courses, you will also find the only floodlit Par 3 in Portugal, allowing you to play a 9-hole course at night or at dusk.

The resort’s properties are set in 270 hectares of pure tranquility and golf course views. Apartments and villas with Moorishinfluenced architecture, interior courtyards, tiles and private terraces with stunning views.

Located in Alcantarilha, in the centre of the Algarve, and 30 minutes from Faro airport.

Vale do Lobo: play golf in the middle of a nature reserve

Anyone looking for a property in a luxury golf resort must visit Vale do Lobo, the most coveted place in the Algarve. The award-winning Ocean and Royal Courses golf courses need no introduction, even in a world context, as some of the most current reputable and mediafriendly golf events are held here.

Of its two courses, we must highlight the Ocean Golf Course, composed of two magnificent 9-hole courses designed by Sir Henry Cotton, opened in 1968 and 1972. The aim here was to unite the two courses in one grandiose project, which came to fruition in 1985. No wonder, therefore, that it is one of the favoured courses of professional players. For golf lovers, the activities do not end at the fabulous greens. Socializing among peers and friends and the sharing of experiences can be continued in the Clubhouse.

Vale do Lobo, which has direct links to the beach, is home to some of the Algarve’s most luxurious properties.

Dom Pedro Victoria Golf: stage for the Portugal Masters

Inaugurated in 2004, the Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course Vilamoura, in the Algarve, was designed by the American architect Arnold Palmer to be the most ambitious golf resort Portugal had ever known. Having been an award-winning golfer himself, he knew what it took to add value. On around 90 hectares of land, “The King”, as he was known, designed an area with 18 greens. The complex includes a much-praised driving range and a putting green of around 2,500 m2 . As one of the most complete resorts in Europe, it’s no surprise that, in 2007, Dom Pedro Victoria Golf was chosen to host the Portugal Masters, the biggest golf competition in the country.

Vale do Lobo: golfe numa reserva natural

Dom Pedro Victoria Golf: o palco do Portugal Masters

22

Dom Pedro Old Course Golf Club: the “Grande Dame” of the Algarve

It is often said that once you get to know the Old Course, designed by the British golfer, journalist and architect Frank Pennink, it is impossible to forget it. This is not because of its longevity – it is the second oldest golf course in Algarve – but because of its idyllic location, hidden away in the middle of a magnificent pine forest, in the heart of Vilamoura, just a 20-minute drive from Faro Airport. The Old Course has 18 holes of varying difficulty; for example, on the first hole, shots must be short to avoid running into the pine trees, from the sixth hole the challenge increases because of the wind and proximity to the sea. At the eighth hole, considered the most difficult in this course, mastery of the game is fundamental. The sixteenth hole is not for the faint-hearted, it is 514 metres in length for a long and straight shot.

Dom Pedro Old Course Golf Club: a “Grande Dama” do Algarve

23

Palmares Beach & Golf Resort: the most breathtaking views

It is in the surroundings and the stunning views that the Palmares golf course’s greatest asset lies. Located near Lagos, in the Algarve, this course was completely redesigned by the American designer Robert Trent Jones Jr. He designed 27 holes on the side of a southfacing hill, overlooking the Bay of Lagos, transforming this golf course into one of the most attractive in the Algarve. In this natural amphitheatre you will find three circuits with 9 interconnected holes: the Alvor Course, the Lagos Course and the Praia Course. They can be played sequentially or independently, but however they are played, it is impossible to ignore the views. The first circuit passes through woods and descends to the beach, offering a panoramic view of the Alvor estuary and the ocean. The second takes the player to the beach with superb views. The third is situated almost entirely on the beach, among the sand dunes. The infrastructure of this unique resort completes the idyllic landscape with apartments and Clubhouse designed by the 2017 Pritzker Architecture Prize winners.
