AS WE LAUNCH INTO THE NEW YEAR, I’M BUZZING WITH EXCITEMENT.

Wrapping up 2025 with two prestigious Eddie and Ozzie Awards for reimagining and redesigning the magazine has crystallized our vision and unleashed our creativity. Now we are poised to expand with boundary–pushing initiatives and I couldn’t be more excited about what’s on the horizon. For the first time in LUXE’s history, we are unveiling a special July/August issue that redefines luxury living across America. Drawing on our relationships with hundreds of the nation’s most influential leaders in the worlds of design, architecture and building, we’ve assembled the definitive compendium of insights spanning every facet of design—from material innovation to the evolving ways Americans inhabit their spaces. This blueprint for contemporary living is made possible only through our unrivaled access and perspective, and we’re thrilled to showcase the American luxury lifestyle as it has never been seen before. Fortunately, you don’t have to wait for summer to find inspiration here. If you, like us, are on the hunt for new ideas and talent, look no further than our upcoming March/April issue where we highlight the most exciting new design talents across the country in our LUXE NEXT program. In my career, I have uncovered many distinguished architects, interior designers and creatives, but as I reviewed the work of a new generation, I was truly inspired by the vision and originality of this group. There is so much to look forward to, none of which would be possible without the incredible talent and dedication of our team and the support of our valued readers. Now, join us as we embark on our most exciting year yet!

TALKING SHOP February marks the one-year anniversary of Serena & Lily opening its darling Old Naples storefront. The residential-like setting showcases the brand’s iconic beachy-leaning offerings across nearly 3,000 square feet of cozy vignettes, a rotating art gallery, a design shop for interiors assistance and a lovely outdoor space to host gatherings beneath a live oak. “Old Naples has long been a destination where the lifestyle we celebrate truly comes to life: relaxed yet refined, coastal but classic,” describes Allyson McGrath, Serena & Lily’s senior vice president of customer experience and head of design shops. “It’s clear that Neapolitans love to entertain. We’ve completed some great projects refreshing lanais, getting bedrooms guest-ready with new Ravello furniture and Sutter bedding, and prepping for dinner parties with reappointed dining rooms.” Up next: The spring collection will be displayed mid-January, and the charming venue will play host to art events with creatives like Theresa Losa. serenaandlily.com

BEHIND THE BRAND EUROPEAN FLOORING After establishing footprints in Miami, Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale, the minds behind European Flooring knew Sarasota would be the next best place to showcase Legno Bastone planks as the brand’s exclusive provider. The Pineapple Avenue location has proved a cornerstone, bringing the world’s only marine-grade hardwood flooring line to local homes. Before arriving in the Southwest Florida gallery—which displays more than 70 wide-plank options—each piece is handmade in Europe using a cold-press method, then protected with a layer of hard-wax oil to withstand scratches, stains and moisture, particularly from humid weather. “This process makes them the safest and environmentally friendliest hardwood on the market,” says Andrew Cohen, the Sarasota locale’s managing partner. Along with 12 new color options, the storefront also recently unveiled Legno Bastone’s Trecento collection, featuring planks almost 10 feet long— ideal for expansive rooms and lengthy halls in the area’s magnificent estates. europeanflooring.com

GET TO KNOW THE CREATIVE MINDSETS OF SIX LOCAL DESIGNERS SHAPING SOUTHWEST FLORIDA HOMES.

Jeffrey Fisher Naples is an ideal locale for Jeffrey Fisher. “Even though the city is small,” he points out, “it attracts extremely talented artisans and tradespeople, making designing here rewarding.” He’s something of an artist himself, approaching spaces with alluring materials. “A slab of natural stone is like a half-completed canvas of a great painting: You can see its potential, but it’s up to you to make it a masterpiece,” Fisher muses. It’s why he enjoys incorporating unexpected elements such as metal dividing screens framed in walnut or going all in with color, like drenching a bathroom in a single shade. “I find that clients who resist the idea initially are the ones who love color the most after they have it,” the designer observes. No matter the project scope, the end result conveys quality, detail and classicism. “A home doesn't have to be large to be well appointed,” he notes. “It just has to have heart.” @jeffreyfisherhome

Emotion is at the core of the homes designed by husband-and-wife duo LeTricia and Anthony Zogheib. “You’ll feel sculptural lines, soulful layering and intimacy in the way natural light, materials and art come together,” LeTricia says of their projects. To cultivate this mélange, the pair turns to a diverse palette across architectural finishes, furnishings and accessories. “I love layering natural stone, bronze and warm woods with luxury fabrics like mohair, tweed and antiqued velvet,” LeTricia adds. “Timeless Italian furnishings give structure, and vintage pieces like a parchment screen, mirrored 1950s end tables or a pair of giant plaster masks found in a Paris flea market bring character and soul.” It makes sense, then, that their visions are sharpened through worldly travels—including those close to home. “We are always chasing inspiration,” Anthony explains. “It can come from Milan’s Salone del Mobile, the markets in Paris or the light at sunset in Naples.” @letriciazogheib

Lisa Ficarra Emigrating from Europe to Naples 30 years ago, Lisa Ficarra saw her design career flourish in Southwest Florida, where a relaxed, seaside aesthetic often permeates her work. “I tend to favor soft, tonal palettes that evoke a sense of calm,” Ficarra says. “It’s hard to not feel inspired by the coastal setting of Naples— especially when many of these homes are waterfront or just mere steps from the beach.” Thus, organic touches and thoughtful trims appear in her portfolio. “One of my signature design elements is the use of interior architectural details and custom millwork,” the designer shares. Key to every project is a continuous color scheme, bolstered by complementary shades to give each space a distinct look. “A Ficarra Design home is one that is elevated and timeless yet feels inviting and ready to be lived in,” she concludes. @ficarradesignassociates

When she relocated to Naples from New York a decade ago, one of the first things Sandra Asdourian appreciated is the area’s indoor-outdoor living sensibilities. “It’s fantastic as a designer to create spaces that seamlessly merge the two,” she observes. “Our homes usually feature tall ceilings that let in plenty of natural light. This makes colors look more vibrant, and textures and patterns stand out more than in northern climates.” These elements help the designer achieve the emotions she aims to evoke in her work, which combines contemporary style with coastal influences. “I love incorporating unique wallpaper, drapery and custom trimwork into our projects,” Asdourian says. And while fashion and travel serve as notable influences for her compositions, the local environment is the designer’s greatest muse. “Nature plays a vital role in my creativity,” she comments. “As a member of the Naples Botanical Garden, I draw inspiration from the color schemes found there.” @sandraasdourianinteriors

Minka McDonald Art and architecture spark Minka McDonald’s imagination. Yet the Naples designer’s deepest driving force is just outside her front door. “I’m endlessly moved by animals, shells, trees and flowers; the sea, the moon and stars; and the luminous metals and gemstones born of the earth,” she muses. And so, it’s unsurprising that McDonald is drawn to organic materials such as rattan, grass cloth, jute and sea grass. “These elements instantly infuse a room with comfort and soul,” she describes, “shaping environments that feel both grounded and inviting.” The designer’s wisdom—a quietly elegant perspective recognized for its timeless feeling—was mastered after years of mentorship under her mother, Jinx McDonald, before Jinx’s retirement from the namesake firm she founded. “I gained invaluable knowledge through those collaborations and carry with me cherished memories from every moment we spent creating together,” Minka reflects. @jinxmcdonald

Lyndsey Davis Nicklas When approaching a project, Naples designer Lyndsey Davis Nicklas isn’t after a look but, rather, a feeling. Artifacts and family heirlooms—“never generic, always meaningful,” she notes—inject a peaceful, personal touch to her work, which blends classic and contemporary styles. “You’ll often find fluting, custom millwork and artisanal detailing—subtle yet striking gestures that add depth, drama and architectural interest,” Davis Nicklas says. It all begins with a foundation of neutral elements like wood and stone for a warm canvas. “From there, we layer in color with precision, dialing up vibrancy and saturation as the scale becomes more intimate in textiles, art, accessories and curated moments,” she shares. “This approach allows each space to breathe while offering pockets of personality.” It all amounts to a meaningful ethos the designer honed through recognizing the trust her clients place in her. “We’re not just designing homes,” Davis Nicklas remarks. “We’re crafting the backdrop to people’s lives.” @l_designstudio

WHEN LIGHT DEFINES LUXURY From Naples to New York, JKM Lighting Design redefines the art of light.

From bespoke residences in Southwest Florida to skyline-defining commercial developments like 660 Madison in Manhattan, JKM Lighting Design approaches every project with a singular vision: that true luxury lies in the seamless fusion of beauty and technology. “Our goal is to make light feel effortless,” explains Founder and Principal Designer Justin Keenan Miller, “Yet behind that simplicity is a sophisticated integration of technology, control systems and design precision.”

In luxury design, light is more than a finishing touch; it becomes the architecture of atmosphere and the hidden layer that shapes how we experience space. JKM Lighting Design, an award-winning studio with work spanning from Naples to New York and beyond, has built its reputation on merging artistry with innovation to create lighting that is as intelligent as it is beautiful.

In Naples, the studio is known for highly bespoke residential and commercial work, including The Ritz-Carlton Residences. Each project reflects a commitment to elevating everyday living through lighting that enhances architecture, supports mood, and brings clarity to form. Whether sculpting subtlety through concealed sources or tailoring ambience through advanced automation, every solution is made specific to the client and the space.

Recognized with the 2025 Luxury Lifestyle Award for Best Luxury Lighting Design Studio in Florida, JKM continues to lead the conversation on how light and technology shape the future of luxury living. For those who see their homes as more than walls, as expressions of the lives lived within them, JKM Lighting Design crafts light that transforms daily living into timeless experience. On the Subject of Light

E XPE RT AS K TH E

A poet among architects, Bobby McAlpine is known for his lyrical approach to light. An amplitude of windows—frequently linear, occasionally circular, but always of extraordinary quality—is a hallmark of his work, which is especially true of his own Atlanta home, seen here. As important as light’s presence may be, so, too, is the absence of it. “There has to be darkness to realize that there is light,” McAlpine explains. mcalpinehouse.com

Whether light is too much Or too little, It is a life force to get to know well. The way we sequence it in varying measure Is akin to touch and affects us emotionally. The great companion of light is shadow. Their need for one another Gives definition to the visual world. It can emote and dramatize a feeling. It can tell a particular story as distinct as song. Light in even measure can be as dull as a classroom But in partnership with shadow can be beatific. It can calm and quiet us as well as uplift us. If it is pulsed instead of broadcast, it can be kind Like the dappled light of a forest before a clearing. It can be carried by a pale floor or Haloed by the depth of thickened walls. It can be blanketed through pattern Falling cast over possessions. It can change states and be made liquid By imperfect glass. Managed to a narrative It is a gift and a merciful given.

Chill Out

IN COLD AND TEMPERATE SETTINGS ALIKE, FULL-BODIED HUES AND PLUSH MATERIALS ADD WARMTH THROUGH THE SEASON.

Although winter’s intensity varies by region—peak skiing in Colorado, while nary a snowflake in parts of the Southeast—our collective tendency to spend January and February indoors inspires a yearning for coziness that spans the country. Toasty shades of coffee, cognac and caramel lend themselves to the season, much like their indulgent namesakes. Plums and deep berries, whose robustness is as welcome as a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon at the end of a long, bone-chilling day, are also apropos. While wrapping a room in warm hues wards off the winter chill out West, elsewhere, in areas less inclined to frigid temperatures, a richly hued accent or two is often all that is desired.

LUXESOURCE.COM

Luxuriating in cushy materials is also a coast-to-coast tradition, but location is key. In city homes, velvet and mohair, whose lustrous glow is reminiscent of a crackling fire, combine warmth and refinement, much like a Chesterfield coat. Mountain houses and chalets, on the other hand, call for sherpa and faux fur, whose high-pile and sometimes shaggy texture beg to be cuddled. Even in South Florida, where warm weather is a year-round pleasure, cozy colors and fabrics feel at home, especially when lightened by white walls. A season to repose before the arrival of spring, winter is a time to take comfort in the great indoors.

The forests of Sun Valley, Idaho, are like Bavarian woodlands transported to the American West: dense with spruce and conifer trees, glass-clear streams and a fringe of snow-frosted peaks. To suit the scene, designer Mark D. Sikes’ clients hoped to imbue their longtime family retreat with reverence to the locale’s mountain magic. “They wanted warmth, pattern, texture, layers, and to ensure that the design told a holistic story,” Sikes recalls.

The home’s previous incarnation was decidedly contemporary, with a darker palette of inky tones. “How do you stay appropriate to the architecture and the vibe of a house, but also add in softness? That’s always a challenge,” the designer reflects. For Sikes, the answer here lay simply in connecting the interiors to the serenity of the surrounding natural landscape. In a place where the air often smells faintly of pine resin and snowmelt, the

designer set out to mirror the calm of the mountains across fabrics and finishes. “Sun Valley is so beautiful with all the trees and different shades of green,” he says, pointing to reflective selections, like the painterly woodland-printed linen he used across the living room club chairs and the mossy-hued chevron striped batik that now envelops the den’s sectional, walls and ceiling. “We like to punctuate certain rooms with one fabric on everything, especially if they’re adjacent to a

STU DY CAS E R ADAR

space that has a mix of elements,” Sikes says. “It creates a pause.” To take the edge off the angular architecture in the dining room, Sikes hung a romantic floral wallcovering whose palette of ice blue, leaf green, warm cream and sandy brown served as inspiration for the home’s overall scheme. “It really emulates the colors of nature here,” he says. Wallcoverings in the bedrooms similarly bring “some newness,” per Sikes, including batiks and stripes in soft, neutral shades. Rounding out the redesign, a medley of lighting fixtures in rich metallic finishes, from antiqued brass to bronze and verdigris, imbue “gravitas, presence and texture,” he adds. The result is a house that harmonizes with the moutain landscape, creating an ambiance of peace and tranquility—and an Eden for R&R. “The palette, the textures, the fabrics and the mood of this home look and feel great no matter what time of year it is,” muses Sikes. “It’s that perfect balance of light and airy in the spring and summer months, and cozy and warm for fall and winter.” markdsikes.com

Crucial to celebrating the site’s essence is a design throughline of perforated steel panels that transform exterior spaces into ever-shifting canvases painted by light and shade. THROUGH THE MARRIAGE OF ART AND TECHNOLOGY, LUTRON VISIONARIES

HORACE HO AND CECILIA RAMOS ARE REVOLUTIONIZING THE WORLD OF LIGHTING. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL

Lutron has long been at the fore of lighting control systems, developing next-gen products that are quietly reshaping how residential and commercial spaces alike are designed. Today, two of the brightest thinkers in their respective fields, electrical engineer Horace Ho, cofounder of Ketra, and artist Cecilia Ramos, senior director of architectural markets at Lutron, are helping to realize the lighting industry’s glow up. In 2009, Ho cofounded Ketra to explore the possibilities of LED. “It was in its early stages, but we knew it could change how people live,” he says. Lutron quickly took note and acquired the company in 2018, and together, they are bringing smart lights and controllers capable of creating almost

infinite light values to a larger audience. One extraordinary use of the technology has been a collaboration with Taliesin West in Arizona. When the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation approached Lutron about joining its restoration efforts, “It was a no brainer,” says Ho. “They wanted to preserve Wright’s vision for how it should be lit—daylight, firelight and low-wattage incandescent—but wirelessly, so the structure wasn’t altered,” he explains. “Bad lighting can ruin good architecture, but good lighting brings out the beauty of form and material.” “When we acquired Ketra, it introduced an atmosphere and feeling beyond what we were doing, and now we’re able to command spaces with light,” says Ramos, whose role is

Take the new Ketra D2 Remodeler, shown, which mimics daylight with exceptional color rendering, with simple installation in existent ceilings. The Rania D2 Remodeler, another recent design, replicates natural daylight, supporting clarity and well-being in any environment.

advocating for the needs of architects, designers and museum curators. “Lighting is an unseen luxury because it elevates a space by bringing out color and texture, and its transformative aspects are powerful,” she explains. (Ramos, an architect, previously worked as a lighting designer for LVMH’s international boutiques; a devoted painter, her first solo show opens at TenBerke in New York this March.) “We want architects and designers to embrace electric lighting as a foundational element of their projects and use it as a medium with which to design, just like wood or marble.” And whether the goal be task lighting or even moonlight, control is in the homeowner’s hand. lutron.com, ketra.com

For Belgian-born Tom and Sabine Verellen, the visionaries behind their family-run, eponymous furniture company, the goal is not only to make beautiful pieces that will be passed down through generations, but to create designs that evoke warmth and ease. “We want our furniture to live in homes that draw you in, homes that make people happy,” Tom reflects. Comfort, which they believe to be the foundation of well-being, is at the heart of Verellen’s design philosophy. This begins with the finest fabrics—including authentic Belgian linens, rich mohairs and plush velvets—from the world’s best mills. A European influence also informs the furniture’s elegant proportions and shapes.

These elements come to life in the company’s light-filled High Point factory, “where everything is made by hand with sustainable materials,” Tom says. The finished pieces then make their way to ateliers in High Point, New York, Dallas and the newest outpost in Denver. Themes of ease and well-being come full circle at the family’s Wilmington, North Carolina, beach house (shown on the previous page) where sculptural pieces bask in a luxuriously casual environment that epitomizes the Verellen lifestyle. “It’s a sanctuary for us,” Sabine shares. A place where nothing is too precious and time slows—the same sense of calm they hope for their customers. verellen.biz

Take a recent collaboration with designer Anne-Marie Barton, whose Fumar Statement Table Lamp is pictured. “She filled a void,” says Singer. “Her pieces are sculptural and textured, organic and bold—that’s really what drew us to her.” It’s designs like these that bring rooms to life with a warm glow and elevate the emotions experienced within a space—a sentiment Singer always returns to: “How do you want to feel in your home?” visualcomfort.com

Nature’s Wonder Imagine a natural material that regenerates every nine years, resists wear, absorbs sound, and lends itself to countless applications. What may sound like a white unicorn exists in the form of cork. Wolf-Gordon, the innovative American surface company, is tapping into the material’s unique makeup for a new line of cork that can be used as both a wallcovering or upholstery. Harvested from the bark of trees primarily found in Portugal, cork regenerates naturally every few years. And because the bark is used in its entirety, the practice is remarkably sustainable. The linear Listras design in Chestnut (far left) and the classic cork motif of Marmore in Sand (near left) are just two of 50 designs— available in an array of bright colors and neutrals—offered. wolfgordon.com

There’s no denying terrazzo’s rise in popularity in recent years—from flooring to home accessories and speckled-inspired motifs. Now, the retro material is entering an exciting new chapter at the hands of Havwoods with a variety of wood terrazzo, aptly named TreeAzzo. A player in the wood flooring industry for 50 years, Havwoods’ iteration shares the same ethos as traditional versions of terrazzo by utilizing available material scraps to create something new altogether. In the case of Havwoods, wood chip waste—including walnut, oak, ash and pine—are used to create tiles in a wide range of colors, from Nougat (right) to more colorful hues like Raspberry, Fig, Pistachio and Blueberry. The application uses are wide—the panels can be installed like a floor or wall tile, applied to backsplashes and cabinetry, or even used to make furniture. havwoods.com

By Hand Armadillo’s Gaia rug collection brings together artistry and craftsmanship from around the world. In a first for the Australian-based company, they teamed up with multidisciplinary Spanish artist Carla Cascales Alimbau to create six rugs handwoven in India. Taking nearly four years to complete, the collection embodies the Earth through its textures, patterns, colors and movement, resulting in a literal and metaphorical grounding experience. “We didn’t want to take Carla’s artwork and imprint it on a rug, instead we wanted to create something beautiful in a soft material outside of her usual mediums,” says Armadillo cofounder Jodie Fried. Like Alimbau’s art, no two rugs are exactly the same. The Alma design (pictured) is made of wool and silk and finished with a special oxidation process to give it a lustrous effect. armadillo-co.com

“What inspires me the most about working with clients is changing the way they feel in their homes,” says New York-based designer Helena Clunies-Ross. In addition to designing beautiful interiors, CluniesRoss can now add furniture designer to her resume thanks to her debut collection, Calma—intended to not only enhance a space visually, but to positively impact how one lives within it. The six-piece assortment (the Console Table and Dining Chair are pictured) is defined by restrained, clean and intentional lines. A little bit Deco, a little bit minimalist, and entirely versatile, each piece is designed to bring balance and harmony to a room, and, at best, encourage parasympathetic nervous relief—a science Clunies-Ross is deeply passionate about. helenacluniesross.com

RAREFIED RETREAT “It really is like being at a luxury resort,” says designer Jill Norman of the private wellness center she and Cameron Shepherd created for their clients in Rancho Santa Fe, California. Indeed, the designers drew inspiration from Costa Rican eco-resorts to transform a dated outbuilding (once home to a lonely indoor pool), which sits just a short walk from the family’s main residence. Now, the inviting destination boasts myriad uses: There are hot and cold plunge pools, a cedar sauna lined with pink Himalayan salt, a powder room and meditation deck, to name a few. And while Norman and Shepherd chose practical materials befitting a spa—like plaster walls that are naturally antimicrobial and easy-to-scrub porcelain tile surrounding the plunge pools—what sets the design apart is its warm detailing. See the quiet art pieces (an abstract painting, a woven wall hanging), vintage-style runner, and thoughtful variations of woods across the ceiling, walls and doors. “So many spas are tranquil but also homogenous—all tile, all plaster—while our favorite rooms are layered and collected,” explains Shepherd. “We wanted these spaces to have focus, while also feeling personal and elevated.” studiomesadesign.com

HAUTE HANDLES

Known for its trusted hardware collections, advancements to Emtek’s popular door pulls now allow for back-to-back mounting on glass shower door fronts. The Select Rectangular Knurled Pull (available in five lengths with interior and exterior mounting options) is pictured here in Satin Copper with Satin Nickel stems. The pulls are compatible with most existing doors on the market, making for a seamless upgrade. emtek.com

HEATING UP

Building your own home spa just got easier thanks to Kohler, who has expanded into the world of personal saunas. The C1 Five-Person Indoor Sauna in Scandinavian Spruce features a user-friendly touchscreen for adjusting temperature, time and the all-important ambient lighting feature. The sauna can stand alone as an eye-catching amenity or be built-in for a seamless look. kohler.com

MATERIAL MOMENT

Look closely and you’ll notice Dornbracht’s stunning Vaia faucet adorned with a delicate mosaic of recycled eggshells. Part of the brand’s new Atelier collection, the program (in partnership with Nature Squared) allows designers unbridled creativity to create one-of-a-kind plumbing fittings using unexpected materials like leather, shell, velvet, wood, and even feathers. dornbracht.com

SMART SURFACE

Caesarstone has introduced a new line of crystalline silica-free surfaces made with 80% recycled materials. The 10 unique designs in the Icon collection underscore the company’s commitment to healthier, more sustainable solutions for their design-savvy clientele—with plans to offer some of Caesarstone’s most popular quartz colors in the line as well. caesarstoneus.com

CROWN JEWEL

Inspired by the headdresses worn by ancient Egyptian deities, the Bandeau Rain Showerhead by Kallista is fit for modern day royalty. Marking the company’s first foray into the decorative shower category, the celebrated introduction is made memorable by the fixture’s luxurious band of fluted Carrara marble accenting one of seven available finishes, with Brushed French Gold shown here. kallista.com

Cosentino’s popular line of natural stones, Sensa by Cosentino, welcomes six new dazzling quartzites to its assortment. Two undeniable standouts include the emerald Itara with subtle copper accents and Cristalo, a warm neutral with delicate veining that adds depth and texture. Not only beautiful, these stones are made more functional thanks to a special anti-stain treatment that ensures the surfaces work extra hard for busy households. cosentino.com

SHOWER POWER

The future is here with Brizo’s SensoriPlus Digital Thermostatic Shower System. Operated by a touchscreen control panel, users can curate personalized showers by customizing and saving preferred water temperature and pressure settings on up to six ports. Think: A relaxing hot shower before bed, or an invigorating cold rinse post workout—all with a simple touch of a button. brizo.com

GROWTH MODE

For an en suite refresh, consider Grohe’s new-to-market Listra collection of bath fixtures and accessories. From wall-mount faucets to tub fillers and towel bars, the expansive collection is transitional in style thanks to its soft, sculptural lines. It’s offered in five trend-forward metal finishes, including brushed nickel, matte black and chrome. grohe.com

SERENE SOAK CHALET W R I T T E N B Y K E L LY P H I L L I P S B A D A L

Japanese bathing rituals inspired designers John and Regan Mattingly’s fresh interpretation of a traditional wet room. Accessed through a hidden door in their clients’ Denver pool house, walls and ceilings of clé zellige tile (in a watery hue dubbed Tea Ceremony) meet black pebble mosaic flooring from Tile Bar—a pairing that nods to the look of a natural spring. Save for a skylight, the lack of windows is intentional, notes John. “This space is meant to be distraction-free, promoting inward cleansing and reflection,” he notes. Wooden tubs by Alfi—one for a cold plunge, one for hot—as well as Phylrich fixtures complete the scene. chaletcolorado.com

esigner Robin Rains returned to a Southwest Florida home she had furnished 22 years ago and encountered a heartbreaking scene: Hurricane Ian had flooded the house, causing substantial damage. The owners wanted everything restored as before, but Rains—seeing an opportunity to update the early-2000s structure—gently coaxed them toward a contemporary renovation. “The interior and exterior had a formal design,” she recalls, describing an open plan accented with columns and moldings. Rains envisioned sophisticated, layered spaces suited for entertaining, playing with grandchildren and aging in place, featuring focal points and intimate gathering areas. Having completed nearly a dozen projects with the owners, the designer had garnered their deep trust—enough so that the clients left the direction of the abode in the hands of Rains and designer Jenna Crosbie Miller. With fresh eyes, the duo planned a look that is finely tailored and expertly curated. “We wanted the home to have character—a past, present and future,” Rains muses. With builder Laura Marzucco, they executed updates such as removing square columns, adding arches, simplifying ornate fireplaces, inserting wood beams and varying ceiling heights. Key to the refresh was a Marmorino plaster wall coating that envelops the rooms. “Unlike Venetian plaster, which has a high sheen, this one has a silk finish,” Marzucco explains. “It leaves the plaster in a more raw state.” Underfoot, the original creamy travertine floors were lovingly restored. “Before the first piece of furniture went in,” Rains says, “the house had a story.” A significant gesture came from kitchen and bathroom designer Richard T. Anuszkiewicz, who proposed relocating the kitchen to the former den for improved circulation and ocean views. Now oriented toward the back grounds—significantly transformed with a new pool and ocean sight lines—the cook space boasts marble countertops, rift-cut German oak cabinetry, a plaster hood and immense storage. “All the forms are clean and monolithic with

earthy materials,” observes Anuszkiewicz, who completed the work while at Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio and has since launched Raith Design. The seaside setting influenced the hard surfaces, which lean natural and weathered, rather than maritime or tropical. For instance, the breakfast bar’s onyx backsplash exhibits charcoals, grays and browns, while the textured marble countertop “is reminiscent of a beautiful, tumbled stone you’d find on the beach,” Anuszkiewicz reflects. This framework establishes a quiet, tonal scheme of beige, alabaster and chocolate, with select blues and greens for a mélange of furnishings. “We wanted an organic, collected look—a mixture of antiques with modern pieces,” Rains says, noting primitive, burl wood, midcentury and artisanal items from destinations like France, Los Angeles and Nashville. “It’s not so much a style we were after but, rather, a feeling: an inspiring, well-lived home.” Their acquisitions resulted in compositions with unconventional shapes, such as an entertaining area with a round games table, rectangular settee and hide rug. “It’s not just a sofa and a pair of chairs,” Rains observes. “Some spaces, like this one, are more eclectically arranged for interest.” Equally integral was the clients’ art collection, which blends new and vintage works, including black-and-white photography, abstract pieces and sculptures. A painting from the previous dining room now anchors the family room—and inspired a muted olive bouclé sectional—while above the living area fireplace, the designers commissioned plaster artwork that mimics a textile. “It looks like fabric moving,” Crosbie Miller describes. “We wanted it to be unexpected.” The dining room art plays into the space’s monochromatic concept, including the geometric flooring. Similarly, the revamped primary bathroom displays a playful tile of curved lines in caramel and espresso. “It spoke to the idea of waves outside,” Anuszkiewicz explains. Continuing the rhythmic feel, the team curved a plaster wall around the oval tub, subtly echoing the shapes in the floor. In the end, what began as devastation became a chance to reimagine a cherished abode. “This story is about rising up from the floodwaters,” Crosbie Miller says. “When you walk into the home, you feel engulfed in comfort,” Rains adds, reflecting on the tangible rebirth. “There is a magical, inspiring warmth.”

or a couple who had enjoyed many residences over the years and knew Southwest Florida well, the time had come to drop anchor and construct a forever home along the waters of Holmes Beach. As longtime investors with much building experience behind them, they knew precisely what they wanted: a timeless abode that captures their love for Anna Maria Island but goes beyond the typical beach house. “They desired something with a nod to the coast but with as much elegance as ease,” describes their designer, Emily Moss. The result is a refined expression of island living suited for every purpose, from gracious gatherings to sandy paws. “The clients were interested in a West Indies aesthetic, which is popular here on the island,” explains their architectural designer, AJ Barnard. “It’s appropriate for the coast, and it works well in high winds because of the hipped roofs.” To customize the style for these owners, he loosely translated traditional elements such as woodwork, louvers and overhangs. “It’s a concrete house clad with stucco, and we used a lot of low-maintenance materials that can tolerate wind and salt,” adds general contractor Jake Martin, who worked on the project with fellow general contractor Frank Agnelli. Hurricanes have come close, but none have left a scratch on the structure, Martin notes. Inside, Barnard devised a floor plan that celebrates the immediacy of the water through generous windows and airy rooms that effortlessly flow from one to the next. “We needed to keep the house from obstructing the view,” he says. Barnard and Moss also played with ceilings to change the experience of a space. By lowering the kitchen height to accommodate the mechanicals, for instance, the area was suddenly cozy. “We didn’t want it to feel commercial, so we brought in homey features with a refined look,” Moss shares, noting the dark wood cabinetry, gold hardware and sizable pendants above the 16-foot-long island.

Throughout the home, the designer focused on furniture selections and arrangements that enhance a sense of tranquility without leaning too coastal. “For big rooms to feel welcoming, you have to introduce moments of intention,” she explains. “Layering helps bring down the scale and makes them more inviting.” For example, the living area’s woven coffee table and cane armchairs lend a casual look, so Moss dressed up the arrangement with tailored sofas, decorative millwork and a glittering chandelier. Strategic lighting— like the dining area’s twin gold fixtures—delineate spaces in the open plan, while materials also provide a through line. Cane, for instance, reappears on the dining area’s side chairs and the kitchen island’s six oversize barstools. “Repeating textures and colors makes a space feel cohesive,” the designer says. Repetition of creamy ivories, deep blues and walnut browns flow throughout the interior, accented with gold touches. “If we were going for a really beachy look, we’d have gone with a lighter palette,” Moss observes, “but the owners wanted to explore darker woods— and navy instead of light blue.” The one exception is the primary suite, which the designer dressed in softer tones—including white oak on the ceiling—for a different, serene feel. A mix of traditional and modern, the room is large enough to accommodate the couple’s request for two queen-size beds, backdropped by trimwork inset with grass cloth for texture. When it came to the outdoor entertaining areas, Moss focused on clean-lined furnishings that support Barnard’s architecture. Landscape designers Alex Pichardo and Alex Lovera also kept the look simple, with Alexander palms at the front door and cheerful pots of annuals around the pool. “The owners wanted a low-maintenance landscape that looks clean and classic,” Pichardo notes. Equally sophisticated and approachable, the property reflects an enduring, elegant take on island living. “Coastal design is a lifestyle, a feeling, and this is a high-level expression of it,” Moss reflects. “You don’t have to be limited by the expected. It’s all about making your preferences known.”

WITH INTERIOR DESIGNER RENÉE GADDIS AT THE HELM, A NAPLES CONDO IS INFUSED WITH VIBRANT TONES AND FORMS.

t’s not every day an interior designer is given the chance to take a condo from empty shell to artfully appointed, but that was precisely the opportunity presented to Renée Gaddis. Her client, hailing from Los Angeles, tapped the interior designer to transform an unfinished high-rise into a vibrant Southwest Florida home base. For Gaddis, the construction timing was a dream come true: “Normally, I have to use the standard building selections,” she notes, “but here, we had an empty slate and could do whatever we wanted.” From the start, the owner gave the interior designer a clear vision of her taste. She wanted her Naples residence to have a bright, bold color palette—akin to the red-and-yellow spectrum at Faena Miami Beach, a maximalist hotel with Art Deco flair—and a similar feel to a particular modernist Parisian apartment by legendary designer Peter Marino. As for the furnishings, the client wished to fill the spaces, in part, with midcentury modern rosewood and mahogany pieces sourced by her friend Brazilian curator and dealer Ulysses de Santi. First, though, Gaddis needed to create the right backdrop with help from general contractor Autumn Jackson. “We wanted to capture a California-cool feel,” the interior designer explains, pointing to the creamy limewash finish of the walls and ceilings. She echoed the pale tones in the wide-plank cerused oak flooring as well as the millwork and cabinetry, which allowed her to flex her creative muscles. “We installed amazing interior doors throughout that are on pivot hinges with custom hardware—they look like they’re floating,” Gaddis shares. “They were the hardest part of the project and required a lot of engineering.” Fluted wall panels and cabinetry are another tour de force, providing an elegant through line that connects the kitchen, dining and living areas to the primary bathroom and a jewel-box powder room— where she rendered the fluted detail on the vanity’s stone top.

A Sergio Rodrigues chair and bench, sourced by Ulysses de Santi, accompany Seth Marksberry art and Revelation’s Illume lamp.

With a neutral yet inspiring background established, the interior designer focused on imbuing the home with flourishes of striking hues. “It was hard to whittle down the colors we ended up using,” Gaddis recalls. She landed on tones such as a citrine fabric for the living area armchairs, a red-orange velvet for the adjoining ottoman, and patterned green, red and yellow pillows topping the ivory sectional. The kitchen’s gold-veined backsplash and countertops get a hit of vibrancy from a bright blue range hood. And down the hallway, Gaddis pieced together unique palettes for the bedrooms to give them distinct personalities, like a 1970s edge for one—with an arched headboard in burnt orange—and boho chic for another, in terra cotta and dusty blue. Each is grounded by a different rug with geometric forms, from a tan linear pattern to a rainbow assortment of abstract ovals. But perhaps the boldest expression of color is in the primary bathroom, which the client proposed decking out in an Italian terrazzo. “She brought me some inspiration photos,” Gaddis recalls, “and I said, ‘Oh, yes, we are using this.’ ” No light hand was applied here: The eye-catching stone—sporting flecks of teal, marigold and orange—covers the floor and envelops the shower. Amid this spirited environment, the interior designer inserted exquisite furnishings that reiterate the home’s soulful energy. Treasures sourced by de Santi—such as midcentury armchairs and the living area’s slatted bench—mingle with “dynamic and unique pieces from makers I’ve been obsessed with,” Gaddis adds, pointing to the dining area’s circular chairs and the kitchen’s blue-leather stools. Form meets function in pieces like the dining area’s chain-link chandelier, the living area’s three-sided coffee tables and the kitchen’s saucer-shaped pendants. In the end, the interior designer muses, the condo that began as a blank slate now stands as a testament to embracing aesthetic risks. “Don’t be afraid of making bold choices,” she advises. “Stay true to your taste—and run with it.”

s far as renovations go, designer Dwayne Bergmann was pleasantly surprised by the starting point of the early-2000s Bonita Springs house his clients had purchased on a lush lakefront site. “The home had an extremely well-detailed original concept,” he remembers. “It had been beautifully done for the time period in which it was built.” In fact, although the new owners favor an eclectic style, they didn’t want to lose too much of the structure’s Mediterranean vibe—just introduce a modern European aesthetic that wouldn’t fight against the existing look. For the initial plan, the couple engaged with general contractor Shane Klepko and builder Alexandra Brennan, whose firm had constructed the residence. “They wanted to open it up as much as possible to see the nearby preserve and lake,” Brennan recalls. The team expanded the sliding glass doors and windows in spaces such as the family room, bringing in views of the double-lot property, while ensuring all interior adjustments flowed within the original framework. For instance, they updated the main floors and stained any existing parts a matching tone. “They had an oak floor and changed the sheen, so we sanded some sections back to the bare wood,” Brennan notes. “That was quite a task, blending new and old.” Pecky cypress ceiling accents—like the dining room’s detail and the primary bedroom’s beams—were also refinished. Introducing this material in other areas made dark wood a prevalent feature throughout the home. One spot that required a heavy lift was the kitchen, where a wall partitioned the space from the living area. Out went the wall as well as the perpendicular stainless-steel island—and in their places, to still delineate the zones, came two oval-shaped islands in a fluted material. “Once we replaced the wall with an island,” Klepko says, “the space transformed.” The team also maintained the bell profile

of the range hood, swapping the finish from a faux travertine to a smooth stucco. “The kitchen has an artistic element now,” Bergmann observes. “The overall aesthetic has a more creative feel.” Decisions made in the kitchen prompted the overall decor scheme. “For the most part, we kept to traditional, transitional styling for the background and architectural details,” the designer notes. “When the clients embraced our oval-island concept, it triggered shapes and forms for the furniture.” Rounded pieces soften the interiors’ 90-degree angles—such as the curved seating in the living area, which boasts a formal salon arrangement thanks to low-back items that don’t obstruct the water views or connection to the kitchen. For color choices, Bergmann leaned into soft neutrals: ivories and golds alongside light blue for an oceanic touch. “It’s a slightly more masculine palette, which works well with the dark wood elements,” he observes. “The owners didn’t want beach-inspired looks like driftwood, but they did favor elements that remind them: This is a coastal environment.” The designer channeled that feeling through material selections such as the kitchen’s wavy-textured backsplash. “The tiles look like sand underneath the ocean when you see the water come back up—that ripple effect,” Bergmann muses. He carried the wave motif into moments like the living area’s chandelier and coffee table, a subtle detail that evokes tranquility. “Repeating shapes, forms and colors is calming,” the designer comments. “The more your eyes have to process change, the more opportunity there is for conflict.” Prints appear sparingly, such as the dining room’s abstract wallcovering and the bluish-gray geometric paper that lines the primary bedroom’s headboard niche. “This pattern spoke to the landscape,” Bergmann explains. “We thought it represented what was happening outside—like organized chaos.” The wildness stays outdoors, though. Inside, the mood is best summarized by the clients’ motto for the house: “Every day is Sunday.” The designer concludes, “The owners wanted a relaxing place. This is the feeling they have when they’re at home in Bonita Springs.”
