Nothing lifts the mood of a room quite like a work of art, which is why Austin-based Four Hands launched an in-house art studio nearly a decade ago. “Since then, it’s grown into a state-of-the-art program that produces thousands of artworks in collaboration with more than 175 independent artists across the country,” says Brooke Elliott, director of art development at Four Hands. Offering a diverse range of styles, media and subject matters, the studio has art, wallpaper and mural designs to fit any taste, including recent additions by Paul Meyer and Aileen Fitzgerald. “Art is an essential element of completing a room,” Elliott says. “It brings warmth and depth, and makes the space personal.” fourhands.com

Fredrick Ramond For over a century, Hinkley has been illuminating spaces with its artful lighting designs. Now, the Ohio-based company is reintroducing its iconic Fredrick Ramond brand, which includes artisan-crafted fixtures inspired by progressive art and architecture. “The pieces are large-scale and visually striking,” says Lauren Lovett, Hinkley’s director of decorative product, of the line. Blending natural materials, handforged metalwork and eye-catching finishes, the fixtures are intended to make a splash. Some pieces, like those in the Fantine family, even include layered, sculptural glass to create a mesmerizing play of light and shadow.

For Naiomi and Tyler Glasses, both seventh-generation Diné (Navajo) textile artists and weavers, collaborating with Ralph Lauren Home has been a dream come true. Naiomi joined the Artist in Residence program in 2023 as part of the brand’s effort to integrate ancestral crafts into its collections. She returned in 2025 with her brother, Tyler, this time to contribute to the Canyon Road collection.

Here, the siblings share what Ralph Lauren Home’s ode to the American West means to them. ralphlauren.com/home; @naiomiglasses; @t_glasses Tell us about being seventh-generation weavers. Tyler Glasses: Naiomi and I spent our childhood in a suburb of Phoenix, but when I was 20 and she was 12, our family moved back to our grandmother’s land in Dinétah (Navajo Nation). This gave us the chance to fully immerse ourselves in our heritage and set us on the path to becoming artists. Our late grandmother, Nellie Glasses, taught us how to weave. One thing that’s always stuck with us is her belief that you should never sit down to weave unless your heart and mind are in a good place. The energy you bring to the loom flows into your work and will be passed on to whomever receives it.

How did you approach your contributions to the Canyon Road collection? Naiomi Glasses: We worked closely with the Ralph Lauren Home team to make sure our pieces were complementary to the entire collection, which celebrates the beauty and rich traditions of the American West. It resonated with us as we live in Dinétah and are inspired by the colors and landscapes around us.

What is your favorite design element?

TG: We incorporated cultural symbols that we often include in our weavings, like the four-directional cross, a traditional Navajo motif signifying the earth’s four directions. Some pieces feature Spider Woman crosses, which reference the creator and protector of the weaving tradition in Navajo culture.

Why did you work primarily with wool and pewter? NG: Wool is the material that Tyler and I use in our weavings.

It holds a lot of meaning because our grandmother used to spend hours spinning the fiber into yarn from the sheep on our land. For the pewter pieces, we wanted something that would resemble that beautiful patina of silver in old Navajo jewelry.

TILE TALK If any designer were to have the proverbial Midas touch, it would be Kaitlyn Wolfe. First, there were residential design projects. Then there was a furniture line. Now, there is Substrate, a tailored collection of tiles born from Wolfe’s desire to streamline an otherwise overwhelming process.

“My guiding ethos was clarity through curation,” she explains.

“There are fewer, but more intentional, choices that still honor different styles and project scopes.” Crafted from porcelain, marble, limestone, terrazzo, concrete and clay, each option nods to nature in a clean, unfussy way. Mountain, a speckled terrazzo, for example, evokes a forest floor, while Fragment, a porcelain tile, calls to mind a frozen pond. Fluted, brick and mosaic iterations complement standard squares so that it’s easy to find the right fit for indoor or outdoor walls, floors and counters. If you still can’t choose, well, Wolfe has a solution for that, too. “Most people have a hard time curating tiles together,” she explains, “so sample boxes are available as mini collections within the full collection, all based on landscapes.” Rooted in nature, informed by experience and imbued with the potential to create more intentionality in a home, Substrate makes the case that Wolfe’s instinct for ideation is indeed golden. substratetile.com

IN GOOD HEALTH LORI CLARKE DESIGN Lori Clarke, founder and CEO of Lori Clarke Design, has appreciated how design can impact health long before wellness went mainstream, creating multisensory experiences in residences since 2010. Today, as mindful living dominates social media and luxury design alike, Clarke shares how she combines cutting-edge technology with color, patterns and finishes to enhance clients’ overall well-being. @loriclarkedesign What are some of your trademark elements in sensory design? Color has the power to shape our mood and energy. I use a lot of blues and greens and wallpapers with leaves and trees to reflect nature.

Which materials do you prefer to use in projects where wellness is a top priority? Bamboo, linen and hemp. Although they wrinkle, they’re all natural, and you can do just about anything with them. I also like 100%-wool rugs.

What are some ways you’re elevating wellness in your new projects?

I’m working on a home where the owners requested the input of a feng shui master during the planning stages. From there, I created warmth and wellness, space by space. In the kitchen, for example, there’s a built-in garden wall for trailing herbs. Other interesting features include a health bar where the family can have tea or juice and healthy snacks, an outdoor shower where they can stargaze, a Japanese soaking tub, and a contemplation garden. Adjacent to that, there will be a recharge room with an infrared sauna, red light therapy and a sound bowl feature. The house also uses circadian lighting as well as a system for hydrogen-infused water, which may benefit muscle recovery, liver function and mood.

Shakespeare famously asked in Romeo and Juliet what power a name holds. The four female artists behind Art & Company have the answer. As their new contemporary gallery in the Scottsdale Airpark proves, a name can capture a philosophy of “bringing people together around art,” explains co-owner Jobie Summer Yagoda. Like layers of paint on a canvas, each artist contributes something pivotal to the composition that is Art & Company.

Adrienne Wannamaker and Beverley Wolter, for example, both work in acrylic and have a similar aesthetic. “I do feel we have this ribbon that ties us together,” Wolter observes. Wannamaker’s pieces are layered, textural and inspired by aerial views of the landscape. They crackle and shimmer with glimpses of resin and memory. Wolter’s artworks, meanwhile, are grounded in the elements: ocean, sediment, desert rock and cityscape. Adding yet another layer is the work of Loren Yagoda, a premier artist with RH whose large-scale pieces dominate the back walls of the showroom. Known for architectural works that meld the expressive with the contemplative, Loren describes herself as a “neutralist.”

Meanwhile, her daughter and protégé, Jobie, sees herself as a catalyst: In addition to working with her mother artistically, Jobie actively connects the gallery with the community. “When interior designers step into our showroom,” she says, “they find stories waiting to be placed in the perfect home.” artandcoaz.com

Although winter’s intensity varies by region—peak skiing in Colorado, while nary a snowflake in parts of the Southeast—our collective tendency to spend January and February indoors inspires a yearning for coziness that spans the country. Toasty shades of coffee, cognac and caramel lend themselves to the season, much like their indulgent namesakes. Plums and deep berries, whose robustness is as welcome as a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon at the end of a long, bone-chilling day, are also apropos. While wrapping a room in warm hues wards off the winter chill out West, elsewhere, in areas less inclined to frigid temperatures, a richly hued accent or two is often all that is desired.

Luxuriating in cushy materials is also a coast-to-coast tradition, but location is key. In city homes, velvet and mohair, whose lustrous glow is reminiscent of a crackling fire, combine warmth and refinement, much like a Chesterfield coat. Mountain houses and chalets, on the other hand, call for sherpa and faux fur, whose high-pile and sometimes shaggy texture beg to be cuddled. Even in South Florida, where warm weather is a year-round pleasure, cozy colors and fabrics feel at home, especially when lightened by white walls. A season to repose before the arrival of spring, winter is a time to take comfort in the great indoors.

The forests of Sun Valley, Idaho, are like Bavarian woodlands transported to the American West: dense with spruce and conifer trees, glass-clear streams and a fringe of snow-frosted peaks. To suit the scene, designer Mark D. Sikes’ clients hoped to imbue their longtime family retreat with reverence to the locale’s mountain magic.

“They wanted warmth, pattern, texture, layers, and to ensure that the design told a holistic story,” Sikes recalls.

The home’s previous incarnation was decidedly contemporary, with a darker palette of inky tones. “How do you stay appropriate to the architecture and the vibe of a house, but also add in softness? That’s always a challenge,” the designer reflects.

For Sikes, the answer here lay simply in connecting the interiors to the serenity of the surrounding natural landscape.

In a place where the air often smells faintly of pine resin and snowmelt, the

designer set out to mirror the calm of the mountains across fabrics and finishes. “Sun Valley is so beautiful with all the trees and different shades of green,” he says, pointing to reflective selections, like the painterly woodland-printed linen he used across the living room club chairs and the mossy-hued chevron striped batik that now envelops the den’s sectional, walls and ceiling. “We like to punctuate certain rooms with one fabric on everything, especially if they’re adjacent to a

space that has a mix of elements,” Sikes says.

“It creates a pause.”

To take the edge off the angular architecture in the dining room, Sikes hung a romantic floral wallcovering whose palette of ice blue, leaf green, warm cream and sandy brown served as inspiration for the home’s overall scheme. “It really emulates the colors of nature here,” he says. Wallcoverings in the bedrooms similarly bring “some newness,” per Sikes, including batiks and stripes in soft, neutral shades. Rounding out the redesign, a medley of lighting fixtures in rich metallic finishes, from antiqued brass to bronze and verdigris, imbue “gravitas, presence and texture,” he adds.

The result is a house that harmonizes with the moutain landscape, creating an ambiance of peace and tranquility—and an Eden for R&R. “The palette, the textures, the fabrics and the mood of this home look and feel great no matter what time of year it is,” muses Sikes.

Lutron has long been at the fore of lighting control systems, developing next-gen products that are quietly reshaping how residential and commercial spaces alike are designed. Today, two of the brightest thinkers in their respective fields, electrical engineer Horace Ho, cofounder of Ketra, and artist Cecilia Ramos, senior director of architectural markets at Lutron, are helping to realize the lighting industry’s glow up.

In 2009, Ho cofounded Ketra to explore the possibilities of LED. “It was in its early stages, but we knew it could change how people live,” he says. Lutron quickly took note and acquired the company in 2018, and together, they are bringing smart lights and controllers capable of creating almost

infinite light values to a larger audience.

One extraordinary use of the technology has been a collaboration with Taliesin West in Arizona. When the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation approached Lutron about joining its restoration efforts, “It was a no brainer,” says Ho. “They wanted to preserve Wright’s vision for how it should be lit—daylight, firelight and low-wattage incandescent—but wirelessly, so the structure wasn’t altered,” he explains. “Bad lighting can ruin good architecture, but good lighting brings out the beauty of form and material.”

“When we acquired Ketra, it introduced an atmosphere and feeling beyond what we were doing, and now we’re able to command spaces with light,” says Ramos, whose role is

Night & Day An entryway demonstrates how Lutron’s new 2-inch intelligent luminaires deliver dynamic lighting scenarios at a small scale, crafted specifically, though not solely, for remodel applications. “We listened to the market and created smaller designs that let architects and designers employ them in restrictive scenarios, like retrofits,” says Ramos. advocating for the needs of architects, designers and museum curators. “Lighting is an unseen luxury because it elevates a space by bringing out color and texture, and its transformative aspects are powerful,” she explains. For Belgian-born Tom and Sabine Verellen, the visionaries behind their family-run, eponymous furniture company, the goal is not only to make beautiful pieces that will be passed down through generations, but to create designs that evoke warmth and ease.

“We want our furniture to live in homes that draw you in, homes that make people happy,” Tom reflects. Comfort, which they believe to be the foundation of well-being, is at the heart of Verellen’s design philosophy.

A European influence also informs the furniture’s elegant proportions and shapes.

These elements come to life in the company’s light-filled High Point factory, “where everything is made by hand with sustainable materials,” Tom says. The finished pieces then make their way to ateliers in High Point, New York, Dallas and the newest outpost in Denver. By Hand Armadillo’s Gaia rug collection brings together artistry and craftsmanship from around the world. In a first for the Australian-based company, they teamed up with multidisciplinary Spanish artist Carla Cascales Alimbau to create six rugs handwoven in India. Taking nearly four years to complete, the collection embodies the Earth through its textures, patterns, colors and movement, resulting in a literal and metaphorical grounding experience.

“We didn’t want to take Carla’s artwork and imprint it on a rug, instead we wanted to create something beautiful in a soft material outside of her usual mediums,” says Armadillo cofounder Jodie Fried. RAREFIED RETREAT “It really is like being at a luxury resort,” says designer Jill Norman of the private wellness center she and Cameron Shepherd created for their clients in Rancho Santa Fe, California. Indeed, the designers drew inspiration from Costa Rican eco-resorts to transform a dated outbuilding (once home to a lonely indoor pool), which sits just a short walk from the family’s main residence. Now, the inviting destination boasts myriad uses: There are hot and cold plunge pools, a cedar sauna lined with pink Himalayan salt, a powder room and meditation deck, to name a few.

And while Norman and Shepherd chose practical materials befitting a spa—like plaster walls that are naturally antimicrobial and easy-to-scrub porcelain tile surrounding the plunge pools—what sets the design apart is its warm detailing. See the quiet art pieces (an abstract painting, a woven wall hanging), vintage-style runner, and thoughtful variations of woods across the ceiling, walls and doors. “So many spas are tranquil but also homogenous—all tile, all plaster—while our favorite rooms are layered and collected,” explains Shepherd. “We wanted these spaces to have focus, while also feeling personal and elevated.” studiomesadesign.com

Ask the Expert How do you include the client in your design process? Candelaria: We begin by asking for imagery from social media, print and/ or mood boards so that we understand each client’s taste and intent. With their wants, needs and visions in mind, we then brainstorm and test alternatives until the design is found.

What emerging trends are shaping your work? Mathewson: Health and wellness are now driving space planning and specification. Clean air, natural light and outdoor access are the base, which is then layered with healthy-cooking kitchens, food gardens, dedicated exercise spaces and spa-grade recovery—saunas, steam, cold plunge and light therapy—all in the service of better sleep and healthier lives.

Has sustainability factored into your approach? Candelaria: Yes. The team delivered Arizona’s first LEED-certified restaurant and designed the first permitted 3D-printed home for Habitat for Humanity, alongside our broader shift toward materials and methods that reduce environmental load while maintaining our design integrity and ambition.

Going forward, what role is technology going to play? Jung: Mobility and reach have expanded radically: sketching, rendering and producing on tablets untethers the work; video platforms enable global delivery; and AI accelerates imagining, designing and producing ideas and renderings, which significantly increases speed and optionality.

What’s on the horizon? Candelaria: I am looking forward to the next 25 years and all the possibilities that time will hold. I will continue mentoring the next generation at Candelaria and in the design and architecture community at large, as well as building and maintaining strong relationships with new and existing clients.

I’m influenced by beauty—both natural and man-made. The way a setting makes you feel is powerful, whether it’s California Wine Country, a Sonoran Desert golf retreat or an East Coast beach house. I love exploring how composition and spatial expression can evoke that same emotional response within a home.

How is wellness shaping the way people design their homes today? Wellness is huge right now. Clients are seeking in-home spa environments, heat and red-light therapy rooms, and bespoke spaces like salt rooms and ice baths.

Kitchens are also evolving to be less formal, more connected to the outdoors and supported by functional walk-in pantries and edible gardens.

How do you define sustainability in your work? Sustainability is about balance. We love to reuse and repurpose materials because those pieces add character and charm—the kind of value that endures. At the same time, authentic, high-quality materials ensure longevity, while technology like advanced lighting enhances both health and efficiency.

What’s next for Christy & Company? Our core values are beauty, excellence and growth.

To us, the latter means expansion of expertise and continually seeking improvement. To that end, our current focus is expanding into safety and security design by integrating technology that enhances physical, mental and emotional well-being within the home.

Ask the Expert Talk about a notable project that put your firm on the map. We completed a family compound on 250 acres in the northern outskirts of Phoenix. The residence featured four structures: the primary home, a multi-car garage, a game arcade and an exercise/manager’s suite. The overall essence of the structures complements the sprawling mountain ranges in the distance, and the restrained materials palette includes SIREWALL, a structurally insulated rammed-earth product that is applied in layers and honors indigenous traditions in the region.

How do you include your clients in the process? We listen intently and put ourselves inside their lives. We also involve them in legwork like curating image boards, so they have a direct influence and voice in the journey.

What type of project would you love to take on? A place of worship.

What is the next move for your firm?

To create our own development of projects, such as a resort with accompanying houses.

We are gaining traction in Mexico and the alpine regions, plus working on designs for boutique businesses.

MANY WHO ENTER A CREATIVE PROFESSION were influenced early on by exposure

to something truly inspiring in the field. This is the case for Brent Kendle, who grew up in a Midcentury Modern home designed by his own parents and discovered the work of Frank Lloyd Wright in childhood as well. Today, Kendle leads a team of passionate, talented architects at his firm, Kendle Design Collaborative. A boutique residential architectural firm focused on luxury modern architecture and architectural interiors, KDC is based in Scottsdale, Arizona, but completes projects throughout many U.S. states and even as far away as the Philippines. For Kendle, the opportunity to design with regionality in mind is a dream.

“Our focus is to understand the unique spirit of a place, the client’s property and the larger community surrounding it,” Kendle shares. “We combine all of that with the client’s program, values and aspirations for how they wish to life their best life.” From there, they work tirelessly to artistically craft a home that embodies it all. Kendle notes, “The quest for excellence is in the DNA of every member of our team. I hope that ethos will endure and continue to improve our built environment long after I am gone.”

On a Personal Note Is there anyone who you aspired to be like?

While Frank Lloyd Wright first inspired me to be an architect, it was one of his apprentices, John Lautner, whom I probably aspire to be like most in my professional life. Lautner pushed the boundaries of what architecture and living could be, embracing the materials and technologies of his time. Never a trend follower, his work is truly timeless.

Share one thing your clients would be shocked to know about you. I’m a drummer and, at the age of 15, I played for a touring Elvis impersonation band.

What’s on your desk? A casita design for an amazing home on six acres spanning a ravine in Camelback Mountain. That and an enormous amount of clutter that I really should clean up!

Which faraway destination most inspires you? Currently my inspiration is Japan, as my eldest son was married in Tokyo last December in a traditional Shinto wedding ceremony. After, my family and I spent three weeks touring the country. Seeing the craft of every little detail in buildings that date back 400 to 800 years, experiencing the pride of their culture and their respect for nature, as well as the spaces created by the collaboration of Japanese architect Tadao Ando and Arizona artist James Turrell—it will forever inform my work.

What do you feel has been your greatest success? Aside from a successful marriage of 34 years and two outstanding sons, my greatest success isn’t any one project, but creating the firm we have today, with a staff that exudes talent, technical expertise and integrity.

What’s next for the firm? We are interested in working in new markets, as they tend to present creative challenges that stretch us and feed our need to learn and grow. We’re also focused on seeing where AI may take us and how it could inform our creative and technical processes.

In what ways has technology influenced your process? State-of-the-art technology— like our new five-axis CNC machine and full CAD department—allows us to achieve pinpoint precision, which has helped us push the boundaries of what’s possible while maintaining our handcrafted quality.

What is your firm best known for? Jody: From custom millwork to luxury tile, we’re known for craftsmanship we control in-house, and for reliability in an industry where delays and overruns are normal.

Talk about a project that helped put your firm on the map. Katie: The Cloud House is the project I point to most, not just because of the end result, but because it reflects what happens when trust, design expertise and craftsmanship align. This was our seventh remodel for the same client, and partnering with Homesmith Design allowed us to elevate a standard builder interior into something warm, layered and truly personal.

What’s next? Katie: We’re launching a concierge home-care division for our existing clients and opening a 1,300-square-foot showroom early this year. The goal is to deepen relationships and give clients and designers a curated, tactile space to experience our work before we ever swing a hammer.

What is the biggest professional challenge you face, and how do you navigate it?

Blending the individual visions of both partners into a home can be a challenge. I navigate this by listening carefully to understand what matters most to each person and then find thoughtful ways to bring their perspectives together into a cohesive, authentic design.

THE TRUE GREATS IN DESIGN HISTORY possess not just talent or an eye for color, but

For a modern-day example, just spend some time in conversation with Stephanie Larsen. “We fulfill a niche in the marketplace that honors the sacred connection between space and spirit, creating turnkey homes that not only look good, but feel good to be in,” she shares. “They are infused with natural materials, mindful energy flow and careful consideration for the unique wants, needs, lifestyles and histories of the clients we serve.” This overarching belief in the impact a well-designed, personalized interior can have has been rooted in Larsen practically from the start. “I’ve been curious about how spaces can make you feel from a young age,” she says. “As I got older, that curiosity deepened, pulling me into this career. I continue to explore how layout, lighting, form and color come together to shape how we respond to our environments. This is my ultimate passion.” Asked to share who she most aspires to be like, Larsen says, “My future self. My aim is to always show up for the me I want to be in 10 years.”

On a Personal Note List three design rules you work by and three of your design pet peeves. I would summarize the rules by saying: energy matters as much as aesthetics, nature is the ultimate designer and luxury lives in the details. My pet peeves are poor lighting, unnatural finishes and design without purpose.

Share one thing your clients would be shocked to know about you. I am currently 16 years sober, and my journey through sobriety is a significant factor in the role wellness plays at the forefront of my life. It’s a path of continued growth and one that I’m proud to walk every day.

What’s on your desk? I plan out my week every weekend on a Sunday, so you’ll always find my planner front and center on my desk. You’ll also find a selection of crystals like selenite and amber, which are selected for their metaphysical traits of warmth, wisdom and clarity—all qualities I strive to bring to work every day.

Which faraway destination most inspires you? I’ve got plans to visit Lisbon, Portugal, later this year, and I can’t wait! I’ve heard amazing things about the region, and I’m really looking forward to exploring the Azulejo tilework, as well as the city’s diverse mix of historic and modern architecture.

What’s next? My husband and I are currently working on building our very own WellHome in Sedona. To date, it is both the most rewarding journey I have been on and the greatest success of my career. We’re partnering with the best in the industry to showcase the latest, cutting-edge resources on the market, from circadian lighting and HEPA air filtration to lifestyle-driven amenities like an infrared sauna, natural pool and cold plunge. We have also just opened our new studio space in Scottsdale and are looking forward to stepping into that new chapter!

WHEN ONE IS TRULY PASSIONATE about their career, their involvement in the industry tends to expand beyond the primary pursuit. This is the case for interior designer Janet Brooks. From building a niche in the burgeoning design-build community to taking an active position on the board of ASID and supporting ongoing efforts to require licensing for interior design professionals in her home state of Arizona, the creative has certainly established herself as a mover and shaker in the design world. It all stems from a deep love of the pursuit, and that fervor extends to how she likes to work, too. “We are collaborators and value teamwork on our projects,” Brooks shares.

“We believe in the value of working together with skilled tradespeople and artisans, as well as the architect and general contractor.” Another point of pride? “Our team is multigenerational, which gives us a broad view of design trends and cultural references.”

Lately, our clients are universally excited to include wallpapers and murals in their homes, whereas a few years ago, we were met with some skepticism when introducing the idea. Another trend we have been loving is the move away from the black, gray and white stark contemporary interiors that were so prevalent for far too many years! We’re evolving toward a warm mixture of colors and textures, and patterns in fabrics are harkening back a few decades now! Clients are responding with excitement and relief—we’re all enjoying the opportunity to create cozy and dramatic spaces again.

What type of project or location would you love to take on? I started my design career in the Colorado mountains, and I would love to take on another mountain retreat or substantial residential project that provides an opportunity to express my love of, and passion for, all things “mountain.” The earthy materials, such as native stone and wood, that we use in mountain projects are the ones I resonate most with personally. I also love the seasons and respect the harshness and beauty of life there. Having launched my career in this unique environment, I am ready to apply that foundational experience to a large-scale mountain retreat and truly showcase its potential.

W

hen the powerhouse duo of designer Rebecca Salcito and general contractor Anthony Salcito created this Scottsdale residence for themselves, they knew it was for keeps. That concept wasn’t a given, considering Anthony has built more than 400 homes in the area, and the couple could theoretically move on a whim. But this dwelling, designed with their friend and frequent collaborator architect Erik Peterson, has a place in their hearts. “This is our fourth house that we’ve built and lived in,” Rebecca says. “Each has had a little bit of a different style, but I would say this one is the most elevated—and my personal favorite.”

But when you are in the business, as the late legendary designer John Wheatman once said, a good house is never done. And, after seven years in residence, the Salcitos wanted to make minor, but impactful, updates. As with every project, the couple brought their unique skill sets to the task. “I concentrate on the big picture—such as making the rooms light-filled,” Anthony explains. “And Rebecca is focused on the finishes, furnishings and artwork.”

You could say that the couple’s art collection was the genesis for the home’s original design, which was inspired by their travels in Europe and created as a beautiful backdrop for the things that interest them. “We love art,” Rebecca says. “Everywhere we go, we’re going into galleries, looking at artworks and commissioning new pieces.” In fact, they are so committed to collecting that they have a storage building for their art, allowing them to rotate their collection as a museum might. The cycle is constant: “We buy a painting, we put it up, and then we might see something else that we fall in love with and purchase,” Rebecca explains. In the home’s refresh, paintings by Hunt Slonem in the living room and the memorable, whimsical piece by DeVon in Rebecca’s office showing Audrey Hepburn blowing bubblegum, spark a fresh atmosphere.

The soaring living room is a study in scale. The ceilings reach 16 feet, and to make such volume feel intimate, the couple

devised a clever plan: “In the beginning, I decided that we were going to have two fireplaces, one on each end of the space, and also two chandeliers,” Rebecca says. One side channels ceremony with a formal fireplace and antique mantel mirror. The opposite end of the long room reflects another side of a coin: “This is our casual side, where we can be a little more relaxed,” she notes.

A U-shaped sectional embraces the modernist fireplace, creating a seating plan reminiscent of a conversation pit. Rebecca describes it as “feeling very warm and comfortable.”

Nearby in her office, things take a moody yet joyful turn with black paneling that makes the light fixture’s glass orbs sparkle. In addition to the oversize image of Hepburn, new floral textiles give the space a feminine touch and divert the eye from a spy-worthy twist: a bookcase that swivels to reveal a home gym. The same dark and delicate nature is present at Rebecca’s vanity in the primary bathroom, where ebony marble with amber veins meets crystal sconces, brass fixtures and floral motifs.

In the kitchen, Rebecca designed around a polished Arabescato marble they discovered while combing nearly “three football fields of slabs,” she recalls, in 115-degree heat. The endurance sport was worth it for the showstopping veining, now softened by counter stools in a whispery pink.

Outside, the couple agreed to both embrace and reject local norms. The terrace, outfitted with a plush sofa and a generous, well-equipped bar, is Arizona outdoor living at its finest. But, after

more than three decades in the Grand Canyon State, Rebecca longed for the lush green she experienced living on the East Coast.

She aimed to “replicate that feeling of many layers of green,” she says, so that stepping into the garden, conceived by Anthony and landscape designer Jeff Berghoff, feels like recalling a memory.

Pair the home’s verdant grounds with its European-inspired interiors, and it almost feels like you are in another world when visiting, one that sprang from the Salcitos’ combined creativity.

Says Rebecca: “You wouldn’t know that you’re in Arizona when you walk through the front door.”

A

nyone who has ever stumbled across a viral unboxing video online knows how addictive they can be, but interior designer Jan Showers’ client experienced the allure in real life. “I was out running around, and I decided to pop into her shop,” the homeowner recalls. Showers had just received a substantial shipment of decor from Paris to her Dallas showroom when she first met the client, who then lived in Texas but had her eye on a new house in Scottsdale. A fan of Showers’ work, she asked if the designer would come see the prospective home in person and sign off on the vision before she made the purchase. But she indulged in a shopping spree first, scooping up items from the impressive parcel. “I loved everything that had come in, so that gave Jan the blueprint on what direction to take the house,” she continues. The moment showed Showers exactly how in sync their tastes were, and she agreed to fly to Arizona for a visit.

When she first laid eyes on the new construction, Showers was impressed by the flow of the house built by JM Wall Development and the manicured grounds by Mitschele’s Landscape. But to adapt the space to the new owner and make it feel like a curated family home, she and her team, which included designers Zara Taitt and Alex Halbrooks as well as Christiansen Builders, had to layer on warmth and character. “It needed color. It was all white,” Showers recalls. The goal was to soften the existing architectural elements and embellish the rooms with new lighting, accents and furnishings, taking cues from Île-de-France aesthetics with lavish textiles and sparkling vintage glass.

The first priority was to bring life to the walls with color, starting with an enveloping verdigris hue in the entry. “It’s one of my very favorite colors, period,” Showers notes. Though her client was initially hesitant, she now “absolutely loves it,” the designer says.

“I think the palette really helps change the way the house presents itself, because all white wasn’t correct for what she was doing, especially with her love of antiques.”

Elevated with abstract artworks and a vintage mirror, the boldly hued foyer sets an opulent tone while emphasizing direct sight lines to the pool and lush greenery in the back. “I always consider the outdoors when I’m doing interiors, because it influences the colors,” Showers says. “Light has everything to do with it—that’s why so many wonderful painters were drawn to Paris during the Impressionist period.” An antique fluted chandelier and rosy vintage lamp bedazzle the view, two of the many glass pieces throughout the

home. “The client loves glass, and I love mixing it with ceramics,” Showers shares. Cloaked in the same blue-green shade, the adjacent dining room is warmed by a collection of amber accents, including glass and ceramic vases and a candelabra chandelier.

Steeping the rooms in coziness was key and achieved using glowing tones, brass finishes and organic elements. The soaring vaulted ceilings of the primary bedroom and great room presented a particular challenge; to ensure a sense of intimacy, Showers sheathed both in rich color. For the primary suite, she selected a muted, earthy blue to infuse serenity, while in the great room, the walls and draperies wear a warm camel hue. “It’s like being wrapped in a vicuña coat,” Showers says of the latter.

The great room’s expansive windows and doors reveal the outdoor living areas, which the owners often use when entertaining. “We open up the house to the back patio, so it’s a walk-in and walk-out from the family room,” the homeowner says. “It’s a really fabulous

flow.” Outside, new pieces are mixed with old to create a timeless balance. Rattan chairs exude an airy elegance next to formal antique tables, and chaise lounges lining the pool evoke a grand hotel along the Côte d’Azur. Consider it Scottsdale’s answer to Saint-Tropez—glass of pastis optional.

ome projects begin with Pinterest boards; this one began in a parking lot. In a true design community meet-cute, interior designer Michelle Bulriss spotted the company name “AllHaus” splashed across a truck and strolled over to introduce herself. “I said ‘AllHaus … what do you do, exactly?’ ” They introduced themselves as general contractors, and she revealed her own design studio name: Lively Haus. “We kicked it off from there just because of the commonality of our names,” Bulriss recalls with delight.

A few days later, AllHaus introduced Bulriss to a homeowner who’d raised his children in his current residence. Though emotionally attached to the space, he was toying with the idea of some design changes. “There were just so many memories that he was scared to lose,” she recalls. After their initial consultation, she didn’t hear from him for a few months. “I thought ‘Oh well, that happens. This is just the life of the industry.’ ” But patience paid off, and he eventually reached back out, ready to create an idyllic backdrop for memories to come.

Aesthetically speaking, the house was a de facto hacienda.

“Beautiful, but it had more of a Spanish Tuscan vibe,” the designer recalls. Bulriss stayed true to those roots but contemporized them with the help of architect Jim Moffatt and designer Lindsey Schultz. “We leaned into the architecture versus trying to deny what it was,” she says. The team embraced centuries-old European aesthetic choices, introducing new lime plaster walls and re-staining the exposed beams. “It’s almost like putting a new toner on your hair,” Bulriss says of the latter. “It’s glossier, it’s shinier—it just makes everything pop.”

the floor plan dramatically. The team made the most of the space by introducing a new oak island topped with Arabescato Vagli marble. Rather than piling on wood perimeter cabinetry, the homeowner opted for a green finish—his favorite hue—in a soft tone that harmonizes with the desert flora beyond the windows.

The nearby dining room’s vaulted ceiling begged for drama.

“Ceiling treatments are a stunning way to enhance a room without going above and beyond with light fixtures,” Bulriss says. An applied veneer suggestive of old Chicago brick gives the space the vaultedstone gravitas of a European castle or fortress, creating a cinematic place for lingering dinners. “It was really fun to do,” she adds.

From the primary bedroom, an arched built-in wood storage cabinet draws the eye to the bathroom. Inside, Bulriss brought an equally storied feel to the new tub and shower surround, clad in the same marble used in the kitchen, this time with pictureframe detailing. Reeded glass framed in faux brass exudes classicism while allowing light to filter into the previously dark shower. “It was really difficult to get right,” the designer recalls.

“But we didn’t stop until we did.”

As the client frequently hosts guests, the exterior was reconsidered with entertaining in mind. Accordingly, an upper patio was transformed with limestone fireplaces and lighter tones for a warm welcome. Overlooking grounds by landscape designer Mark Jones, the terrace feels like Provence by way of the desert— sun-washed stone and flickering firelight.

The kicker? All of this happened in a strict nine-month timeline.

“It was literally all hands on deck,” Bulriss says. But the rush was worth it. When the doors finally swung open, the space felt not only renewed but emotionally restored—a perfect mix of nostalgia and modernity. The designer is smitten; the homeowner is thrilled; and the house now supports new memories layered atop the old ones.

Fate couldn’t have designed it better.

love you and will go with you anywhere. But if you want me to be happy, we’ll move back to Scottsdale.” These words, passed from wife to husband, were what prompted Mike and Tammy Dalton to sell their Florida home and put down roots out west again. When the opportunity to purchase in a golf community they once loved living in manifested, they jumped at the chance to create a bespoke holiday home, tapping their longtime designer, Emily Marek, for the task.

“Our last Arizona house was very Tuscan-inspired. Here, we wanted a more modern feel,” Tammy reflects. Other than this directive, the Daltons gave Marek carte blanche to bring a lived-in sensibility to the striking new-construction residence designed by Encore Design Group and built by general contractor Brad Leavitt. Working with Leavitt, Marek employed strategic tweaks to the architectural interiors, including painting ceiling beams white and trimming them with black end caps as well as framing case openings in a thin band of black metal, to establish a clean, high-contrast setting that allows the Daltons’ eclectic art collection to shine.

Amid the restrained palette, Marek looked to textural materials and muted patterning to kick up the design. Take the kitchen, a mash-up of warm wood, white quartz and patinated brass that manages to read both timeless and fashion-forward. Quiet pops of pattern, from the abstract fabric swathing the island stools to the swirling tops of the marble coffee tables in the adjoining living area, add further layers of interest. And in the bedrooms, subtly detailed wallpapers give each space its own distinct vibe while adhering to the home’s confident visual flow.

Much like her approach to texture, Marek’s lighting program brings forward an edgy, elevated perspective. “Lighting played a huge role throughout,” the designer affirms. “We really wanted to take things to the next level.” Choices like swagged alabaster lariats in lieu of predictable pendants above the kitchen island and a sparkling crystal chandelier in the primary bath deliver on that dictum.

While the interiors are undeniably inviting, the most used space of all might be the covered terrace. There, Marek commissioned a pair of iron sofa swings as both objets d’art and functional furniture. The 1,200-pound pieces entailed reinforcing the ceiling to support their frames, but the bigger challenge lay in getting the Daltons on board.

“Those took some convincing, as the clients thought they might distract from the views,” Marek admits. “I assured them they would actually draw the eye outdoors.” She was right: “Now it’s everyone’s favorite little gathering spot.” Beyond, a pristine pool and grounds enhanced by landscape designer Adrian Javalera give way to the golf course, and, further afield, the majestic sweep of desert landscape.

The finished product speaks to the ease and excellence that go along with a time-honored client-designer relationship. Says Mike, “This house makes people say ‘ahhhhhh.’ ”
