On the other hand, if you want your backsplash to be a mosaic or patterned tile, then solid colored countertops are your best bet. Don’t mix stones unless one of them is a solid. There are exceptions to the rules. However, even when expertly executed, these exceptions are likely to eventually date your space, which means that your kitchen will not have a timeless appeal. The other problem is that your style might be too taste-specific. If you are living in your forever home, you have more creative freedom. However, if you suspect that you may sell at some point, a “unique” style could result in limited buyer-interest. And what if your kitchen doesn’t meet these criteria, and you have to live with what you have? Two points to consider—the proper styling can make a huge difference in the feel of a space, and you can still create lovely memories—even if your kitchen isn’t the one of your dreams.

Jen also asks whether it’s okay to mix metal finishes. Yes, you can! I even like to mix metals in the same space, but my general rule is to limit the metals to two finishes and to make sure that the finishes aren’t so close in appearance that it looks like you tried to match and missed. To avoid brass overload in her bathroom, I would use brass/ gold-toned lighting and cabinet hardware, and I’d stick to polished nickel for the plumbing fixtures. I frequently use a brass and nickel combo in kitchens too.

BISON: THE ULTIMATE RED MEAT By Brianna Melanson

Native Americans believed that bison came from the stars, while all other animals were created from the Earth. For thousands of years, American bison were their main source of food and means for survival. The Natives’ immunity to disease and strength from eating the sacred meat, granted them a much longer life than the other settlers. It is from their special history and majestic qualities, that Dr. Frank King, author of “The Healing Revolution” and founder of King Bio, began raising bison with his family in 1985.

Dr. King and his wife were vegetarian for six years and realized it was increasingly harming their bodies. After trying every kind of diet, Dr. King was introduced to the advantages of bison meat. He cooked up some bison liver, and later that evening was full of energy. It was that rejuvenating moment that he decided to be a carnivore again. Not too long after his wife was converted to bison, her anemia disappeared and she lost 30 pounds, making her body leaner and stronger. While some prosper without meat, Dr. King affirms from his experience healing people naturally, vegetarianism is not for everyone. Soon Dr. King started prescribing bison meat to his patients and their problems dwindled. Dr. King assures, “Everyone I have eat bison will feel a difference within 24 hours.” It is a fact that bison meat aids in lowering cholesterol and weight loss due to their low calorie, cholesterol, and fat content. These numbers are lower than both fish and beef. Plus, bison have high levels of vitamin E, omega-3 essential fatty acids, and protein. But there is still no answer as to why bison has their made allergies, headaches, and heart burn go away. Scientists are still researching the reasons behind the various benefits. They eat bison two to three times a week. Disease-causing genes that you’ve inherited can change by eating, drinking ,and thinking healthier. Nowadays, it’s advised to limit or omit red meat from your diet because it can increase your risk of heart disease. However, that doesn’t apply to bison even though bison is an even darker red meat. Other domestic animals do not have the integrity of their original roots because they have been cross-bred for generations and have been fed hormones and other harmful chemicals. The bison’s vigorous genetics helped them endure two Ice Ages. Dr. King remarks that bison meat is the purist meat because they’ve come directly from the prehistoric period and their genes have not been altered. Dr. King says, “Consuming the bison brings us on a fast track back to nature and returns the positive gene expressions to your body.” Therefore eating bison can replace the predisposed threats with a brighter future. Vegetarians shaking their heads may be relieved by the way the bisons are raised compared to other meats, such as the dairy cow who only lives up to 2 years. Bison live four times longer than beef. Entwining our initials on the lock sold to us by a peddler on the bridge, we added a token of our story to hook on with so many warm hearts before us to be a part of this fun spirit of serendipity. Like many before and many after, we gently tossed the keys away to symbolize the strength of the long-lasting love lock tradition. While all romance and things light and happy tickle our fancy, the weight of the locks can be structurally overbearing for the older bridges. Know if you partake in the Valentine-like tradition, snap a picture for your memory book as the locks may be removed. Removals of the locks have been noted as the weight of the locks were causing structural issues to the bridges of Paris which were built in the 1800’s. Nevertheless, the lovely locks move and groove through the City of Light finding their ways to 11 other bridges and landmarks even the iconic Eiffel towel. Love grows and so does the tradition of locks-Locking a symbol of your love has even caught on in other cities such as NYC, Melbourne and Munich. Last summer in Pittsburgh, we even spied some locks on the 6th street bridge which connects Downtown to the northside. So if you are traveling with your love and spy something colorful and metal attached to the bridges in the city you are visiting, it just may be a lovely lock - a beautiful reminder that love grows and lives joyfully in the hearts of us all! a honeymoon destination or anniversary trip as well. Upon walking hand in hand along the pathways beside the river, we encountered a plethora of different sights- artists creating colorful paintings, picnic blankets set near the river’s edge with wine and cheese partakers, river boat tours with many people watchers taking in the sights, and one unusual sight that caught our eye- a bridge covered with locks of different shapes and sizes and colors! Intrigued by the conglomeration, we had to learn more about this interesting spectacle. In the City of Light, there is a trendy gesture for couples to share a token of their love in a (somewhat) lasting memento. Asking a local near the bridge, we learned the tradition of couples writing their name on a lock and attaching it to the bridge metalwork originated on the Pont des Arts. The bridge connects the Palais du Louvre and the Institut de France. The bridge has been commonly referred to as ‘a symbol of passion and fidelity.” Curious to understand more, I learned that the gesture was initiated around 2008. It was based on a 2006 novel by Italian Federico Moccia. Moccia’s novel, Ho Voglia di Te (I want You), notes a loving pair writing their names onto a padlock and attaching it to the Rome’s Milvian bridge. The couple then threw the keys into the river as a sign of eternal love. Hence, the tradition made its way to Paris and continues on…

Erin Foley the creative force behind RCB Fashion is a professionally trained seamstress, holding a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design and Marketing. In addition, she has over 15 years of sewing and pattern-making experience. Erin created RCB Fashion in late 2007 when she decided to leave her job and start working for herself full time as a contract seamstress. I always just had a love of creativity and fashion for as long as I can remember. I was a little girl my mother was a seamstress (it was more like her hobby, she was making cloths for me and my younger sister) and she always had lots of fabrics at house. She taught me to sew and we made a sunbonnet. After that, I made all kinds of doll clothes. I was always making things for myself to

� DESCRIBE YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS. It usually starts off with an inspiration and this does not have to be something tangible, but can sometimes just be a feeling or a mood. I usually have a selection of fabrics that I have chosen for the season. I will then start scribbling ideas down on paper and making rough sketches of things that come in to my mind. Once I feel I have a clear pattern of where the collection is going, I start to put it together, create the patterns and drape a lot of the styles. This is where the magic Art starts and the collection comes to life.

DO YOU HAVE FAVORITE MOMENT IN THE PROCESS? Yes, I definitely do. It’s the moment when I am adding the finishing touches to the dress, Decorating is the most exhilarating moment because this is when an idea actually materializes into something tangible. Sometimes it comes out even better than the client and I had imagined. I really like that moment!

CAN YOU GIVE A LITTLE OVERVIEW OF HOW YOU CAME TO BE A BRIDAL DESIGNER? Can you give a little overview of how you came to be a bridal designer? I am a designer first and foremost, in my work I found many women coming to me for unique wedding gowns and mother’s dresses, so as I did my work I gravitated towards the commissions that people requested the most. Consequently Bridal attire became one of my specialties. For me as a designer this encompasses not only bridal gowns but a large number of mother’s dresses, grooms accessories and flower girls. I enjoy designing beautiful clothing and I love the variety of designing for the entire wedding party.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF DESIGNING BRIDAL GOWNS? Creating a garment that flatters and enhances the beauty of the client while keeping the client’s vision for her special day in mind is always the goal. The design process is extensive and goes far beyond the initial concept, after that comes selecting the proper textiles, pattern draping, sizing, construction, fitting and finishing. All the hard stuff that is so essential and requires a special-

ist (or several in some instances). All of that hard stuff is what I love, creating a concept and bringing it to life

WHAT IS TRENDING FOR THE ASHEVILLE BRIDE? The Boho style is trending and has been for quite a while. It demonstrates itself in pretty feminine dresses worn with eclectic jewelry, relaxed updo hairstyles and casual settings. All in all it is reminiscent of a young girl playing dress up with lots of lovely things that don’t exactly go together but the juxtaposition is charming and romantic.

WHO ARE YOUR BRIDAL STYLE ICONS? My clients are my icons and my designs are created to suit their needs which I listen to and observe carefully. Every year several clients stand out as a perfect fit for me and I keep them continuously in mind as I design future collection for they are my trendsetters and inspiration.

ďż˝ WHERE DO YOU LOOK TO SPOT TRENDS AND KEEP ABREAST WITH WHAT BRIDES ARE LOOKING FOR? I watch people and listen to their needs. For me it it less about trends and more about creating a fantasy garment that works. I engineer dresses to fill needs that brides have not thought of yet. My top selling feature is a dress that converts to a shorter length or has a removable train so that the bride can enjoy elegance during the ceremony and freedom of movement at the reception. This is not a factor to many brides until it is too late to address properly. I make certain I know everything that is desired in a dress so that I can offer solutions that do not compromise the final vision.

ďż˝ WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT NEXT FROM YOUR LABEL? My next set of offerings will include more satin gowns with beautiful hand beading. These dresses are intended for evening Autumn and Winter Weddings where they will look the most elegant. In addition to that I am expanding my offerings for grooms, mothers, and flower girls so that the entire wedding party will have the opportunity to look unique and feel great in what they are wearing.

estled on the banks of the Catawba River, the Pump House is a five-story eatery specializing in locally-sourced Southern cuisine. What was once an industrial pump house (hence the name), this waterfront restaurant now boasts some of the best riverside views in all of Rock Hill. We arrived for a leisurely weekend lunch and tucked ourselves into a corner table located on their glass enclosed

balcony that’s adjacent to the main dining room. The overall design of the third story space is rustic yet sophisticated, flawlessly mingling pine salvaged from an 1880’s textile mill with lavish chandeliers and classy tableware. There’s a floor-to-ceiling, temperature-controlled cellar along the back wall that allows guests to choose from over 900 bottles of wine. Our waitress just so happened to be a sommelier, so we enjoyed a few wine pairings with our meals. As a welcome, each table is greeted with a basket of house-made cornbread and peach butter. Ingredients at The Pump House are sourced heavily from goods grown in the Carolinas, so expect to see some of your favorite local purveyors highlighted in their dishes. The menu goes way beyond the typical Southern fare, so we ordered a couple items from each section to get a taste of Chef Michael Griswold’s spring offerings.

GRILLED SALMON SALAD WITH CITRUS VINAIGRETTE

WHETHER YOU’RE A SALAD LOVER OR NOT, YOU GOTTA GIVE THIS RECIPE A WHIRL. This Salmon Salad with Citrus Vinaigrette is sure to turn your ordinary weeknight dinner into an extraordinary mealtime adventure. Our family especially loves the flavor combination of salmon and oranges; it’s seriously addictive! Trust me when I say, you’ll be making this recipe on repeat all season long.

This Grilled Salmon Salad combines tart grapefruit, juicy oranges, crisp red onions, nutty pumpkin seeds and creamy blue cheese with a tangy vinaigrette. Perfect for meal prep or an easy, and flavorful, weeknight dinner. I’m a huge fan of salads. I’m not talking about those tasteless bowls of lettuce and croutons… no one has time for that (and friends don’t let friends eat dull dinners, right?). Spring has officially arrived, so let’s take advantage of all those wonderful fruits and veggies we have available! A FEW NOTES ON THIS RECIPE: • I’m a grapefruit advocate, so I included a full fruit in this salad recipe. If you’re not as big of a fan as me, no problem! Go ahead and use half or substitute with an orange. Either way, this dish will still taste fab. • Looking for a dairy-free option? Simply leave out the blue cheese and substitute with a creamy avocado. I’m all about different textures and this swap will still get the job done. • Are red onions too harsh for you? Substitute with a shallot! Fancy, fancy.

INGREDIENTS: Serves: 2 Entree Size Salads FOR THE CITRUS VINAIGRETTE: • Juice from 1 Lemon • Zest from 1 Lemon • 3 tbsp. White Wine Vinegar • ½ cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil • 1 tsp. Dijon Mustard • 1 - 2 tbsp. Honey, to taste • 2 cloves Garlic, minced • 2 tsp. Fresh Thyme • Salt + White Pepper, to taste

FOR THE SALAD: • 8 ounces Cooked Salmon, cut into bite-sized chunks • 4 cups Spring Greens Lettuce Mix • 1 Ruby Red Grapefruit, segmented • 2 small Blood Oranges, peeled & sliced • 1 Orange, segmented

DIRECTIONS: 1.

Whisk all ingredients for the citrus vinaigrette together in a large mason jar or bowl. Set aside.

The Scottish-born designer came to the United States with just $2 in his pocket, eventually becoming the course professional at Pinehurst. That was all he needed to jumpstart his course designing career. Of the 600 courses throughout North America designed by Ross, none are perhaps more famed than Pinehurst No. 2, which has all the great elements of a Ross-signature course, such as attention to detail, turtleback greens, double plateaus, fall-away slopes and uphill approaches. In fact, his goal in designing courses was to present a different challenge to golfers on each, so no hole played the same way.

BEN HOGAN Before there was Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson or Dustin Johnson, there was the great Ben Hogan. Broke and struggling as a professional, little do many people know that Hogan was actually contemplating retirement in 1940 before he earned a key victory — his first national win — at the 19th North and South Open at Pinehurst. It took him a decade to win his first tournament since turning pro, but he didn’t stop there. He won two more times in North Carolina that year and eventually went down as one of the most iconic golfers of all time.

PEGGY KIRK BELL As one of the founders of the LPGA as we know it, Peggy Kirk Bell is another instrumental individual that influenced the Sandhills region. Though Bell passed away in 2016 at 95 years of age, her family still owns and runs Pine Needles Resort in Southern Pines. While Bell remains one of the most notorious female golfers of all time, what’s interesting about her story is that she didn’t start playing the game until she was 17.
