here’s something magical about summer, whether it’s the long nights spent outside, time spent with family on vacation or relaxing in your favorite spot with a good read. Celebrate the most lovely time of year. This summer we are bi-coastal in California meet’s the Carolinas. We have a magnificent property just outside of Coachella’s Valley designed by Dorothy Willetts and a 3 day excursion to the Napa Valley, where award winning wines and amazing food come together at Meadowood. Closer to home we have a a dreamy destination to Primland. Which is a short drive from Charlotte and should be a must on anyone’s list. When I think of summer I think of a time where we’re all a little bit more free and I love how India Hicks, (who happened to be a flower girl in another royal wedding ……Prince Charles to Lady Diana) exemplifies this with ease. How she manages her work and home in a seamless fashion. How the article by Allison Parker “These Girls are on Fire” shows us the freedom to manage their own time these women have created for themselves. Who else to exemplify the perfect west coast - east coast theme then Wendy Hope. In Wendy Hope Gives Hope to the Future of Music By Brianna Melanson. Her beauty, style and music are an inspiration. The women and destinations in this issue all speak of grace and ease just how summer should be. Enjoy!

MARILYN MONROE,

Speak It, Sister! by Leslie Green

We all have our favorite beliefs, mantras, words we live by. You might guess that based on the name of this article, mine are Trust Life Today. And although I do love everything those words mean to me, my FAVORITE belief is probably the one that I’ve felt and known since I was a little girl. This one:

Everything happens for a reason. 20

July / August 2018 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

Sounds simple, it may even sound corny. Yet still, it sums it ALL up for me. This is one of those rare things that I feel in my bones. Because of my deep belief in, and resonance with these words, the following quote by Marilyn Monroe caught my eye: Marilyn Monroe Everything Happens For a Reason.

I like this a lot. After the first line, needless to say, I was hooked. Followed by the words “let go,” which make up one half of Trust Life Today’s slogan (Let go…Trust Life.)—another score. Yes, I even like the bit about believing lies so eventually you’ll trust no one…but yourself. I think the placement of the words, specifically where the line ends, was clever (and deliberate) on the part of whoever created this word art. The way the words are positioned on the line, the reader is led to believe that the point of that particular segment is to trust no one, when really, you read on and see the actual point is to Trust Yourself. There is a Taoist story I wrote about to illustrate the ideas of:

trust • letting go • everything happens for a reason AND, we may never know how or why it happened Basically, it incorporates all of the elements of the Marilyn Monroe quote, and explains more about how Everything Happens for a Reason.

he verdant rows of manicured grape vines interspersed with cornflower yellow fields and

shadowed by rolling hills--those are the first things that strike me when I visit California’s Napa Valley wine country. Home to more than 400 wineries--large and small--Napa Valley is nestled between the Mayacamus Mountains and San Pedro Bay. The area is known for its award-winning wines, especially its Cabernet Sauvignons, its outstanding farm-totable restaurants and its many activities, such as hot air ballooning, bike tours, kayaking, golf and fly fishing. “Exceptional wines, passionate vintners and memorable experiences await.” -Meadowood Resort

Where to stay Napa Valley offers a myriad of accommodations, ranging from awarded wineries to deluxe resorts and endless activities. One of the most luxurious and awarded destinations is the Meadowood Resort. just five resorts in the world to be given the prestigious Forbes Travel Guide’s triple five-star award for 2018. This award denotes excellent in all three areas (lodging, restaurant and spa) in a single resort and Meadowood Resort had the honor of receiving the award. Guest rooms and suites here are all spacious and decorated in relaxing, muted tones. Upon staying at the Meadowood each guest has the luxury of only being a car trip away from St. Helena and Yountville. The enjoyment of wine is a standard here as each guest is invited to a wine tasting of some of Napa Valley’s best wines.

What to do The spa offers suites, stellar treatments, relaxation gardens, boutiques and a culinary menu to enjoy during treatment. You’re experience will begin with the spa’s signature tea followed by the treatment plan created with one of the spa’s therapist’s. In addition to a full menu of spa treatments, guests can sample healthy food options using fresh, seasonal ingredients. But if you’re looking for another way to spend you’re afternoon Meadowood’s 18-hole championship golf course attracts many nation wide. KEEPING YOUR HOME

TIMELESS

I

by Claudia Ricciardone

’ve recently collaborated with multiple clients who hired me to update high-end (but dated) homes. Even though I enjoy guiding

homeowners through their new builds, many homeowners reach out when they are preparing to sell or attempting to make a new home more personalized and livable. These are two very different processes, but they do share similarities. Unfortunately, without proper knowledge, homeowners who are preparing to list a home, remodeling a home, or even redecorating a home can encounter pitfalls. If you fall into one of these categories, read on to find out how to sucDesigner: Jody Myers-Fierz, Photographer: Jane Beiles Photography

cessfully navigate the process of updating your space while avoiding expensive mistakes!

In fact, if your hard finishes (like granite countertops and tile) were installed during the brown trend, grey walls will most likely make your home look lifeless and dreary! One recent client was advised, both by a realtor and her previous designer, to paint her walls grey—when grey clearly did not work with her home. Had she not trusted her gut, she would have made a very costly mistake because as you know, paint is expensive! She subsequently hired me for a paint consultation, and we determined what DID work—creamy whites and pale, green-undertone beiges. Instead of looking drab and dreary, her space became light and inviting. Staged correctly, her house will sell in a snap!

When selling your home, the goal is to depersonalize. We’ve all heard the obvious tips, but in case you need a refresher, do pack away those family photos, declutter, and neutralize. Think easy on the eyes but generic enough to appeal to many buyers. Even though paint seems to be an easy fix, many potential buyers can’t see past minor, cosmetic issues. If you have screaming-red walls or espresso-brown everything, buyers may feel deflated and ignore your home’s beautiful architecture or stunning landscaping. Here is where you should pay attention because sellers and home buyers get a lot of bad advice about choosing the right paint color. If there is one piece of advice I’d like to share it is:

Painting everything grey does NOT automatically update your home.

HERE IS ANOTHER TIP While sellers should stick with neutral colors, buyers should incorporate color. Homeowners should also seek to personalize their homes. I have a wonderful client who travels the world with her husband. She has an extensive art collection and unique finds from countries all over the world. While a home seller would need to scale down and pack away goodies such as these, we sought to highlight and compliment her collection, in part, by using wall color. Although neutral, monochromatic palettes work well for selling, they can be a bore to live with. Today’s greige-neutral paints work beautifully as a backdrop for fresh color if they coordinate with your hard finishes (again, meaning countertops, cabinetry, flooring, and tile). Whether through furnishings, accessories, or wall color, don’t be afraid to add a little personality to your home! Remember that if you decorate all in shades of grey, you

Moreover, when introducing color, make sure your rooms flow. The easiest way to do this is to repeat one color throughout your rooms, even if the rest of your palette varies. The colors should also coordinate. Keep in mind whether your colors are fresh or muted, saturated or pale, and vivid or subdued. Does this sound confusing? Here’s a hint—limiting your color palette will make it easier. Sellers need to get rid of extra “stuff,” but home buyers should layer when designing their home. Realtors often suggest that clients remove draperies from windows to highlight architecture and let in the maximum amount of natural lighting, which works for selling a home. But living in a house with bare floors and windows can feel sterile. Rugs, window treatments, accessories, artwork, wallpaper, and beautiful lighting are some of the layers that help a home feel thoughtfully designed and finished.

Her instincts are also influenced by her many years in Chicago as a student and young designer, preceded by time in Mexico. “When I first moved to California, it was a big adjustment – the buildings don’t smell the same, as strange as that sounds. In Chicago and on the east coast, buildings are made of stone and wood and concrete that give a real substantiality and energy – a smell. The solidity of those

in empowering your day. They help you charge yourself before it all starts. For most of us, giving yourself that extra 10 to 20 minutes to perform a few morning rituals will help bring you a day filled with more productivity, energy and long term health. Set a positive tone for your day and try a few of the following morning rituals that will literally change your life and day.

1. STRETCHING Stretching for a few minutes in the morning can help you wake up your muscles and ease into the day. Right when you open your eyes the first thing to do is stretch, (or maybe second thing to do). Spend 10 minutes each morning gently stretching. empty stomach. The acetic and butyric acids promote gastrointestinal health by balancing your pH and encouraging friendly bacterial growth Here are just a few other positive attributes of Apple Cider Vinegar; • Apple cider vinegar is very beneficial and one of the most effective remedies for stiff joints .

• It is rich in potassium. This mineral is key for growth, building muscles, transmission of nerve impulses, heart activity etc. It also helps to prevent brittle teeth and hair loss. • It is rich in acetic acid. This acid is said to slow the digestion of starch which can help to reduce the rise in glucose that commonly occurs after meals. • It is rich in malic acid which gives it its antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties. The acids in apple cider vinegar prove helpful in detoxification in that they bind to toxins in the blood and help the body eliminate them more effectively. Furthermore, the antiseptic qualities of ACV cleanse the digestive tract, clearing congestion, blemishes and acne • Rich in ash which gives apple cider vinegar its alkaline property. This aids your body in maintaining proper pH levels for a healthy alkaline state. Which can help regulate blood pressure and reduce bad cholesterol. • May help improve bowel irregularity and helps to remove toxins from the body at a faster rate. It can help clear up skin conditions and blemishes.

4. SKIN BRUSHING While you may brush your hair every morning, brushing your skin before jumping in the shower has great health benefits. Our skin is our largest organ, and is often overlooked. Dry body brushing has existed in cultures for centuries, it has been used in ancients times to keep the body healthy and has now made its way back into popularity. Dry skin brushing helps increase circulation, opens pores and truly invigorates your skin. Dry skin brushing can help assist your body with proper toxin elimination and detoxification by helping to cleanse your lymphatic system of toxins that accumulate in your lymph glands. It can reduce cellulite and increase energy.

• It helps with weight loss by breaking down fats so that your body can use them rather than store them.

5. LISTEN TO UPLIFTING MUSIC Uplifting music can have a direct impact on our mood. This is especially true in the mornings. It can tune us

Sophisticated Sport Watches

Gone are the days of chunky digital athletic watches, as luxury watchmakers recognize a market for sports watches that are stylishly chic and highly functional. There’s been an influx of high-end models that boast both performance with versatility and character.

With aesthetics clearly anchored in the depths of the aquatic world, Tag Heuer’s Aquaracer Lady takes on a chic sporty look with a diamond and mother-of-pearl iteration. Instead of the traditional white face, the iridescent nacre coating on the dial is a vibrant indigo, and doted with 11 diamonds as the hour indexes. Its functional steel case is durable enough to take a beating and look elegant while doing so.

It was with OMEGA’s maritime legacy in mind that the brand launched its Planet Ocean line. Today, the stylish OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M Master Chronometer pays homage to OMEGA’s dive watch heritage. The athletic lines of Omega’s famous Seamaster is testament of the brand’s dedication to its dive watch heritage. The white ceramic dial is complemented by a matching unidirectional bezel, and then mounted atop a 39.5mm stainless steel and 18k Sedna gold case. Like the rest of the series, this chronometer watch is capable of water resistance to a depth of 600m, and comes equipped with a helium escape valve to withstand that pressure.

Gems are popping up for the men. The famous GMT Master II with its Pepsi bezel has been the piece de resistance for collectors for many years, and now Rolex has one-upped its self by reviving a gem-setting on the model again. The gemstones mimic the standard ceramic bezel, although it doesn’t provide the same functionality as numbers, it will still do the job of indicating day or night

She has an ear for hit songs and interest in southern music talent. She pushes to get their songs sold to major celebrities such as Miranda Lambert. Wendy has also expressed her concern about the cutback of music and arts in schools. She wants people to know that music is an important part of a child’s education. Not only does music contribute to a child’s learning abilities and emotional development, but music will enhance their creativity, memorization, and likelihood of becoming a successful musician in the future. “Ever since Mint Museum Uptown opened in 2010, we have sought ways to interface more directly with Levine Center for the Arts plaza, by enlivening the front of the building to be more welcoming to our visitors,” said Jonathan Stuhlman, Senior Curator of American, Modern, & Contemporary Art. “After a careful review of more than three dozen applicants, our team felt that Vesna’s proposal was a perfect blend of interactivity, innovation, and aesthetics. We are excited to work with her to bring her vision—and the entrance to the museum—to life!” said Annie Carlano, Senior Cura-tor of Craft, Design, & Fashion. Petresin will work with her team, including regional and city of Charlotte consultants, to design, test, and create the installation throughout the spring and summer. Work will continue while Mint Museum Uptown closes from early July through mid-August for a floor refinishing project (Mint Museum Randolph will remain open). It is scheduled to debut at a public celebration in September (details to be announced closer to the date).

Behind the Scenes of Paula Newsome By Brianna Melanson

Paula Newsome is more than a “triple threat.” She flawlessly juggles acting, writing, traveling, volunteering, and having a love life. Lately, the public is raving about HBO’s new series “Barry” in which Newsome plays the fierce role of Detective Janice Moss. This dark comedy was produced by Alec Berg and Bill Hader, who stars as the hitman-turned-actor Barry. Newsome notes, “I appreciate that Alec and Bill wrote a woman in 3D.” They interviewed a high ranking female police detective in Los Angeles and she became the inspiration for Janice’s role. Then they hired a variety of female writers to gain knowledge and insight on how a woman should be portrayed. Her character is dynamic as she is able to show her sense of humor, resilience, and vulnerability. Newsome adds, “She’s a woman who can take you out in the alley with a cold piece of steel, but also a woman who has a tender heart when someone unexpected opens up to her.” This someone is Barry’s brutally honest yet quirky acting professor Gene Cousineau (Harry Winkler). Bill Hader has given Paula praise for her talent and the incredible last scene where she bravely confronts Barry. Janice is always taking the lead and going after her gut, many times without any backup. The shocking ending keeps you on your toes for the second season. Shepard and owner, Ellen Davis. Some of this year’s harvest includes figs, fresh tomatoes, strawberries and basil. During our menu tasting, we discussed the likelihood of an herb-focused mixed greens making an appearance this summer. Shepard plans to elevated this salad with creamy burrata that’s dressed in a basil or bacon vinaigrette. As a special treat, we were invited to participate in one this year’s summer menu testing days. The featured recipe was a light tortellini arrangement with pan-torched heirloom tomatoes, house-made pesto and locally-sourced micro greens. This dish was then paired with a citrus-forward Sauvignon Blanc that aligned itself perfectly with the herbal notes of the pesto. The McNinch House will perform several assessments before making a final decision on their summer menu, though, we have high hopes that this entrée makes the cut. We also partook in a 6-course tasting from their current spring line-up. The menu narratives are listed below to get your taste buds in the mood. All pairings were selected by wine expert, Anthony “Wes” Wesley, who has been assisting guests at the McNinch House Restaurant for 16 years. Shepard, a Johnson & Whales trained culinary expert, recently celebrated his third year with the McNinch House. Growing up in North Carolina, his family escaped to an intimate retreat at Cade’s Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee every summer. He recalls the entire household gathering into one cozy space; no cell phones, no television, no internet… just family bonding at it’s finest. A couple of his memoirs include waking up to patio breakfasts overlooking the mountains and competitive games of UNO. However, the most predominant are the smells of freshly cut grass and hay. “Working with our vegetation allows me to reminisce about my childhood adventures spent outdoors and among wildlife. When I design our menus, it’s my ultimate goal to give guests the taste of that particular season and awaken memories of their own”, expressed Shepard.

Meet & Greet with Cassandra Benfield, owner of Harvest Farm in Black Mountain. by Jessica Bently

This conventional family farm grows an assortment of produce including Tomatoes, Cabbage, Potatoes, Squash, and Corn. Cassandra is a 5th generation farmer, descending from a family that primarily grows Christmas Trees. During our visit, we had the opportunity to gather our own produce from her fields. Our pick? Cherry tomatoes. These sun-ripened fruits are ready to be picked 65-70 days after planting; they are available year-round with a peak season in the summer months. Cherry Tomatoes are generally sweeter than the larger variety, bursting with flavor and versatility. Brighten your dinner plans with my Caprese Chicken over Greens and Beans.

My go-to Chopped Caprese Salad: INGREDIENTS: • 1 small container of Cherry Tomatoes (about 1.5 cups), chopped in half • 6-8 Basil Leaves (about 1/4 cup), chopped • 1 clove Garlic, minced • 8 ounces Whole Milk Mozzarella, chopped into bite sized pieces • 1/2 cup Balsamic Vinegar • 1 tbsp. Olive Oil (I love using Greek Olive Oil in this recipe) • S + P, to taste

Grilled Chicken: • 2 Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts • 1 tbsp. Blackening Seasoning

Sautéed Spinach & White Beans

• 1 large bunch of Fresh Spinach (about 10 cups) • 1 (15-ounce) can Cannellini Beans, rinsed & drained • 3-4 Tbsp. Olive Oil, for sautéing • 2 cloves Garlic, minced • S + P, to taste • 1 tsp. Red Pepper Flakes, optional • 1/4 cup Breadcrumbs or Crushed Crackers (we used Club Crackers) • 1 tbsp. Butter

DIRECTIONS: 1. Prepare Caprese Salad: Chop all Vegetables and Mozzarella and place in a large mixing bowl. Gently toss with Balsamic Vinegar, Olive Oil and Salt + Pepper. Set aside until you’re ready to plate. 2. Season the Chicken with desired seasonings: I like to use Blackening Seasoning but you can use whatever seasoning you prefer. Grill on medium-high for about 7 minutes on each side, or until internal temperature reaches 165F and juices run clear. 3. While the Chicken is grilling, prepare the sautéed Greens: Heat Olive Oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat and add Garlic and Crushed Red Pepper. Sauté for 1 minute before adding the Spinach. In large

handfuls, add Spinach in batches and mix constantly until wilted (about 10 minutes). Psst…Don’t forget to flip your Chicken while cooking this! 4. Rinse and drain the Cannellini Beans and add to the skillet: Continue to cook for another 4-5 minutes, or until beans are heated through. 5. In a separate pan, melt the Butter and add Crushed Crackers: Sauté until the Crackers are golden, about 4 minutes. 6. Assemble the plates: First lay down a bed of Spinach & Beans and sprinkle with crispy Crushed Crackers. Next add the Grilled Chicken Breast and top with Caprese Salad. Serve immediately. photo by Jessica Bently July / August 2018 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com 77

décor or personal wear, it is key to find something that one is comfortable with and build around it and, most importantly, feel good about it inside.” Small touches, India advises, can go a long way in home décor. For example, India shares “Bedding can be a beautiful way to update each season. In the summer, change bed linens to crisp, whites and in the winter switch to darker tartans and wooly blankets.” She further indulges “A way to carry the feel of the islands back to the city is easily achieved by simply covering a few chairs with pressed white slip covers. It can be the simplest touches that enhance the mood or feel of a room.” To engage the senses for a complete experience, India loves to use candles and flowers to delight the eyes and fill the air with an aromatic fragrance. The salt air and orange blossom scented candles can create a sensory journey back to the islands without leaving the living room. Complementary items such as casual accent pillows and throw rugs go a long way in setting a scene of comfort as well. Speaking of setting the scene, India is one who loves to entertain. or the second time in history the FEI World Equestrian Games will be held in the United States. And they are going to be held right here in North Carolina! It will be the largest

attended equestrian event in the U.S. in 2018. There will be an estimated attendance of over 500,000 ticketed spec-

tators from around the globe who will attend the two week event from September 11th to the 18th. Tryon International Equestrian Center in North Carolina will play host to the world’s largest equestrian competition. Tryon is an easy driving distance to Charlotte and Asheville, as well as Spartanburg and Greenville, SC. Administered by the Fédération Equestre Internationale, the Swiss-based worldwide governing body of equestrian sport, the Games will take place over 14 days, and it is the major international championship event for the eight core equestrian disciplines of show jumping, dressage and para-equestrian dressage, eventing, driving, endurance, vaulting and reining. The WEG is held every four years, halfway between the Summer Olympic Games cycle. Equestrian enthusiasts from over 70 countries travel to WEG host cities every four years to cheer on international athletes from their native countries. The event has been held in an impressive list of major international cities, including: Stockholm, Sweden (1990); The Hague, Netherlands (1994); Rome, Italy (1998); Jerez de la Frontera, Spain (2002); Aachen, Germany (2006); Lexington, Kentucky (2010); and Normandy, France (2014). An important player in the region’s economic development, most recently the FEI WEG 2014 in Normandy, France achieved a local economic impact of $400 million (€368 million).

Charlotte’s great springtime traditions held at the Quail Hollow Club. Many of the world’s greatest golfers compete on the recently renovated Quail Hollow course for one of the richest purses on the PGA TOUR. This year the excite-

ment was surrounded by Tiger Woods who returned to the event after making a comeback from a series of back surguries. His win here in the 2007 Championship was one of the most memorable moments in the tournament’s history. It is his first time returning to Quail Hallow since he played here in 2012. Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson and Masters winner Patrick Reed also attended this year. July / August 2018 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

Mother’s Day.

When asked what would be the biggest thing your learned today? Jason replied, “That I say a lot of negative stuff in my head when things are going bad. I said earlier I was fighting demons out there because when you’re not hitting it good, it just feels like the life is getting sucked out of you. Just feel like you don’t have ——the confidence is starting to dwindle, but you know that you’ve just got to keep pushing. I know that I can fight and keep pushing regardless of how bad things are going. So that’s the biggest thing that I know is that my mental strength out there is actually quite strong. It’s not up to the level of like a Tiger or anything like that, but just being able to keep myself around. Somehow getting it done when things aren’t going great, because anyone can win hitting 15 greens and having six birdies and no bogeys and playing great, but the moments where you win and you don’t have your greatest stuff is the moment you learn the most.”

It’s a good time for doing research into anything because you’ll dig under any rock and find everything there is to find. You’re turned off by superficiality, and far more realistic than usual, perhaps to the point of pessimism. You’re bogged down by old issues that have come up again, and you need to release them in order to move on. A relationship could come to an end, or something could come to fruition for a partner. You feel comfortable in your own skin and want to be true to yourself.

You could be presented with a great new opportunity to bring something positive into your life. You may embark on a new adventure. This could be a good time for talking with those you’re close to about your relationships and what you can do to improve them.
