THE BRIGHT SIDE OF BELGIUM (NEW EDITION)

ANTWERP Antwerp is the largest city in Flanders, but even so, it still has a certain charm and simplicity. Practically all must-see attractions are within walking or cycling distance of one another, it is a safe environment and its streets and squares will easily become familiar territory. But don’t be fooled: there is a lot going on in Antwerp in terms of culture and nightlife, from funky summer festivals and innovative opera to easygoing bars and underground parties with all the best DJs. When it comes to fashion Antwerp is the perfect place to spot new trends. Its famous fashion academy has spurred great talents like Dries Van Noten and Ann Demeulemeester over the years – talents that treasure their close

Concept stores we love ① Graanmarkt 13 13 Graanmarkt

www.graanmarkt13.be

On the basement floor of this unique concept store you’ll find the exclusive restaurant of chef Seppe Nobels. He serves straightforward dishes prepared with high quality products, some of which come from the rooftop garden, where bees provide both great honey and optimal pollination. The groundfloor shop is all about timeless, high quality and sustainable fashion for her and him by small labels like Lemaire, Mansur Gavriel, Extreme Cashmere and CristaSeya – this is ‘slow fashion’, without new collections every season but different ‘editions’ of classic pieces. The first floor is a boudoir where you can shop, among other things, exclusive perfumes or the exquisite handmade Italian linen of Once Milano. And then there’s the

Second-hand designer fashion by home-grown talent such as Dries Van Noten, Ann Demeulemeester, Raf Simons and Martin Margiela and international labels like Jil Sander, Balenciaga and Marni. The pieces are no more than three years old and are sold for half the original price or less. But you can also find new items here from previous collections. And last but not least there’s the shop window, which functions as a platform for up-and-coming talent.

In this beautiful space you’ll find a mix of clothing brands for women and lifestyle objects by national and international designers, such as Ellen Verbeek, Ginger and Masscob. Subtlety, elegance and durability are the common denominators. Be sure to check the website, with a live feed from the shop to narrow the gap between the online and offline experience.

Even Jean-Paul Gaultier buys his gloves in this classic ganterie. Ever since 1884, when two Italians set up a workshop here, this is the place to be for gloves in all colours, styles and sizes imaginable, made from the finest leather. Arthur Boon took over the business in 1910. The interior still looks the same as it did in 1929, and even the ritual of trying on gloves, opening each finger with a kind of wooden pincher, is the same today as it was back then.

A beautiful boutique for fashionistas who like the bohochic look of Parisiennes, featuring French labels like Vanessa Bruno and Isabel Marant and goodies from the US such as James Perse, Equipment and Sea. Nicole Kidman is a fan.

② Enes 58 Volkstraat www.enes.be

In a beautiful town house in Zuid you’ll find this stylish new concept store, with inspiring fashion by French and Nordic designers, along with art books and design objects. The shop includes an authentic bathroom where bodycare products are displayed and a bar.

connection to the city, and chose to establish their flagship stores there. You will also find many hip-and-happening concept stores and bohemian chic boutiques in Antwerp, where people watching is as interesting as in Paris, but less exhausting. Constant innovation without the hectic pace: that is what Antwerp is all about. Apart from its vibrant present, Antwerp has a rich past with numerous artistic and cultural treasures, the most important of which is the painter Rubens. Antwerp inhabitants have a somewhat pretentious reputation throughout the rest of Belgium; after a visit to this beautiful city, you would almost agree with them.
