History

60s

beginning In Finland in 1964 Pentti Viitala and a friend bought a truck and began reupholstering used sofas in the hay barn on his family farm. They sold these sofas door-to-door. His wife Viola and son Timo (now Chairman of the Board) are pictured helping sewing and making buttons in these early years.

70s

schoolhouse days The Viitala family lived and operated a factory from an old schoolhouse. During this time, they made the transition from reupholstering to manufacturing new sofas. To reduce lead times and meet the rising demand, the family began to warehouse all the raw materials needed for the expanding production line. As additional lorries were purchased, home delivery services expanded all over Finland.

80s

growth years After acquiring a local sawmill, operations expanded to include the aframe building step. The business was primed for increased production, initiated a B2B sales model, and hired twenty full time employees to aid production and sales. After a decade of strong growth, the business began construction of the Kurikka factory. And to highlight the significance of this time, Pentti and Viola named their children as partners in the family business.

90s

globalization Timo Viitala, a born leader and visionary with an intimate understanding of the business, was named CEO. Today, Timo remains an active member of our team as Chairman of the Board where he continues to mentor and share his vision. Immediately after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the business began to export to Russia and its neighboring countries. This boosted the company and saved it from the recession that gripped the Scandinavian market. As exports and market share in Finland grew, so did the need for capacity. The second production line was completed and outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment.

With its new output capability, the business could better support its export market, and supply furniture to roughly 550 retailer location across 15 countries around the globe.

a new chapter Luonto Furniture, Inc. came to North America in 2012 and established a strong footing in the market. With showrooms at both High Point and Las Vegas Markets and more than 300 Authorized Retailer locations across the continent, we have developed a strong foundation for sustainable growth. In 2019, Luonto relocated to Charleston, SC for better access to the ports, and opened the Luonto Distribution Center. With this facility, we have more control to provide a better service to our customers.

AquaClean Aquaclean® Technology is a revolutionary fabric treatment that allows you to clean stains (wine, coffee, food, pen etc.) only by using water.

Just Three EASY Steps

Remove any excess residue on the upholstery.

2 Apply water over the stain, either directly or using a damp cloth. Wait a few seconds.

Press down over the stain with damp cloth and rub gently over the fabric in circular movements. If the stain does not come off completely, repeat the process as required.

MAINTENANCE For normal sofa maintenance we recommend that you vacuum the entire surface area regularly. You can use a normal home vacuum cleaner with a brush fitting.

SAFE FRONT® Safe Front® is a powerful permanent barrier against external agents that is applied as standard in the fabric manufacturing process, so there is no need for external disinfecting or sanitizing agents. If you want to keep the sofa clean, you can vacuum it with a soft brush. Safe front protects as standard against enveloped viruses and bacteria, effectively reducing its activity by more than 91% against untreated fabrics.

WASHING INSTRUCTIONS For normal care, you don’t need to remove or wash the sofa fabric. But for large or tough stains, before washing review the following instructions: • Machine wash, delicate cycle (max 30°C) • Do not spin dry • No bleach • Do not dry in tumbler

• Do not dry in sunlight • Do not squeeze or wring upholstery • Do not iron • Can be dry cleaned

Our solid foam cores are wrapped with dacron to create a soft comfortable interface layer between the upholstery and core foam. Gluing is an important step as it prevents the upholstery and wrapping from separating or shifting. This avoids any undesired lumping or comfort changes during its life

Whether serging hidden edges to prevent fraying or finessing the small details critical to the design, our sewing department makes all the precision and perfection only look easy.

From our experience, technology cannot always match the quality of our leather-workers. They possess a touch and feel understanding of the intricacy that machines cannot replicate. All top grain leathers and pattern upholsteries are cut by hand. This method produces the best resource management and outcome.

It’s during the upholstering where the design starts to have a visual resemblance to the finished piece. Our team of upholsters are strong and tough and they work consistently to ensure every piece of furniture is precisely fitted and perfect. Native Nordic Spruce and Birch grown in this cold climate produce strong but flexible material perfect for furniture making

Made for longevity, we exclusively use springs for our seat suspension. Minimum four per seat, prevent sag and settling.

We use thick cuts of 2.2 density high resilience foam for all our seat cushions. All foam is tested for durability and quality.

This age old technique proven indestructible, each seat frame is joined with finger joints and bonded with glue for a strong lasting joint.

Metal clips with plastic coating secure every spring end with glued staples. To provide a strong, squeak-free seat experience.

Used as a soft comfort barrier between the foam core and upholstery. Dacron is glued in place to prevent future lumping and shifting.

In line with our quality standards, we use hardboard on the backside of our sofas. We use this material to create a sturdy reliable surface.

Friction between the foam core and springs will create breakdown. We add felt to create a protective barrier prolonging foam life.

Filled by weight with machine separated fibers, each pillow is chambered to provide lumbar support, without sagging overtime.

From the start, each design is created with careful precision. Our packaging secures each design to be delivered safely each time.

Leg Style FAQs Q: Can I order custom legs for a Stock Piece?

A: Yes. Compatible legs can be purchased through any Luonto Authorized Retailer. Made to Order Legs (legs not included In-Stock with In-Stock frame) will need to be produced at our factory and will have a longer wait than what is offered in our stock collection. We will fulfill your stock order first, your legs will be fulfilled when we receive them from our factory. In the meantime, you can use the In-Stock legs included in your stock order. Please note not every leg is compatible with every frame.

What is “MTO Program” Any item in our collection is available from our Made to Order Program (MTO). MTOs offer you the ability to select modules (if available), upholstery, upholstery color, leg style and color. Our factory will be tasked to make the design with all your selections.
