Corona Bottle Opener

This is a bottle opener which is designed to be used as a promotional giveaway for the Mexican bottle beer company Corona. This is a project from my Design and Manufacturing Technology Module. The Objective of the Project was to produce a desirable promotional widget for a certain company and then to manufacture the injection mould tool which would produce the ďŹ nal product

In the initial stages of this project we worked individually to produce a development folio for our promotional widgets. On the completion of our individual work we then joined into groups of six and chose one idea to take forward into manufacture. For our group we chose my idea, the Corona bottle opener.

In the ďŹ rst stages of the group work we amended the D ďŹ les so that they abided by all the constraints of CNC machining and injection moulding. We changed things such as insert sizes to make them more machinable and increased the size of the logo engraving as it was too small for the tool to follow the path.

Using HSM work’s (a Solidworks plugin) I was able to program all the CNC machining with another group member for both mould halves’ and 2 of the inserts. Once complete we proofed the program on blue foam to ensure it all worked before going onto the aluminium blocks. From our CAD I produced a series of working engineering drawings to assist the an a t ring stages and tting o arts hi h had to e machined manually.

2 of the inserts were CNC machined, but due to their size and shape they had to be manually finished to fit the blocks using the milling machines, hand files and the surface grinder. The largest of the 3 inserts was machined manually due to its simple rectangular shape.

To make the donor parts I had to first program and tesselate their exterior form using Techsoft 2d Design. once programmed we used the water jet cutter to cut out these pieces from 3mm stainless steel.


We injected around 20 times changing pressure and speed limits till we got the best result which ended up being a speed of 0 and pressure of 30. This promotional widget in primarily directed at those of a legal drinking age and would be given away as a promotional item as a part of multi packs.

Our tool was designed for mass manufacture so we found that we could produce 3,291,428 over a 3-month period with 160 hour working weeks and a 8-hour maintenance period. This would more than satisfy our brief which was to be able to meet a 3 million in 3 months quota.

Through series of user testing with different hand positions and grips on these given two prototypes I came to the conclusion that to have one hand on the product may not offer enough leverage to be able to hoist your catch up and check the screen so I thought that an option with two hand holds would be more suitable.


User Testing and general peer review concluded that the handle forms although o orta le ere too old ashioned and didnt o well enough with the rest of the form, so should be changed.

The handles are now a modern smoother shape with a gradual trimetric form, which proves both Aesthetically pleasing as well as comfortable and more suiting to a wider range of hand sizes.

Vespa Cooker BRIEF: Design a desirable branded product that allows hot food to be eaten on location. Choose 1 brand to fully explore and adapt to a chosen environment to drive your design activity.

pERSONAs: names: Ben and Sarah Age: 28 and 26 problem: Ben and Sarah often go out on road trip adventures to new fun locations, when on the road they all ways strive to be healthy with their food choices, but the range at most service stations is very limited to cold reasonably healthy food or hot greasy food. This is not good enough and leaves them lacking energy and often hungry.

Concepting

To finalise the form, I investigated Vespa as a company to find out their main values as well as analysing their forms to pick out detailing which I’d replicate in my design to make it suit the brand. I then drew up a series of concept sketches as well as making a few low fidelity card models to get an idea of size and proportion.

Product Experience

This device aims to keep road trippers on the go, giving them the opportunity to cook and eat a warm healthy homemade meal on location where ever they may be. The products form and branding are like that of Vespa’s own, which includes smooth sweeping forms light bright colours with chrome detailing for sections such as the iconic logo, rimmed edge and the grills on the back.

The device can hold up to 600 ml of soup which is enough to serve eo le or a light l n h t is designed so that it ill t into ost cup holders in cars so to be as versatile as possible and not get in the way of the user while cooking and while they are driving. The product is to be activated upon arrival of the location and should take around 20 minutes to come to boil and be ready for consumption. Once ready, the device will sound an alarm to notify the user, and the heating element will shut off.

Technical Function

Once plugged in, the power instantly goes to the silver coated copper element (3) which warms up and directly heats the inner shell which contains the soup.

When the soup starts to boil, the steam vapour from the soup rises and condenses in the steam tube (2) which leads down to a bimetallic strip (4).

The inner shell will be made from aluminium, and it will be manufactured through the process of deep drawing.

All polycarbonate parts are completely injection mouldable as they’re all in perfect line of draw with no undercuts. Outer shell parts clip together using mounting bosses and lip and groove systems.

STORY BOARD

A young Couple Are Bored on a weekend and undecided what to do. The husband suggests a road trip to a surprise location which instantly sparks the wife’s imagination.

They decide to go ahead with the plan and start to prep some healthy tasty soup for their arrival. Tensions are brewing.

The Couple set off with minimal gear in their fancy car. The husband takes the wheel and the wife can’t contain her excitement for the surprise, so she emphasises this through singing to loud music in the car and laughter.

The soup is finally ready and just in time for their arrival at the Grand Canyon! The wife is ecstatic and blown away by the vast views, so they set up picnic at the closest table and enjoy their meal while laughing and enjoying each other’s company.

The Couple Return from their day out fully refreshed from their healthy on the go meal and enlightened by the experience.

The Husband notifies the wife that they are to arrive at their destination within the next 25 minutes, so he asks the wife to take out their vespa soup heater and plug it into the 12v. Romance rises simultaneously with the brewing of the device. The wife Can’t wait to hear the done sound of the device as she knows that’s when she will arrive at her surprise place.

BRIEF: “Using a live hinge or hinges you must design a homeware product for student accommodation that must be capable of compact storage” I had a set time frame of 1 week to deliver this in.

pERSONA: name: Daniel Smith Age: 20 problem: Daniel is a tudent li ing in a small at within student accommodation. He has very little spare space in his room and struggles to dry his clothes without paying for communal drying machines as he can t fit a drying rack in his room.

Hooked is a multifunctional washing basket which gives students a compact unit where they can store their dirty washing as ell as a s a e e ient drying rack once unfolded. This is all enabled using live hinges.

1. Place the basket in any desired location such as under o ed or o r des ll ith dirty clothes and towels, until you’re ready to do a wash.

3. While your clothes are washing you can locate a radiator within your student accommodation and begin to unclip the sides and unfold the basket to open it into your drying rack. Once opened you can hook it onto the top of your radiator for support and heat to aid the drying process.

4. Once your clothes are done washing you can hang them out on the rack to dry.

2. Carry the basket to your washing machine and empty the contents into it.

5. When your clothes are all dry and you no longer need the basket or ra o an old it flat or s a e e ient storage so that it ill t into those unutilised spots in student housing such as behind beds or between cupboards so that it doesn’t get in the way.
