The site lies at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Boylston Street; at its location and proximity to many area colleges such as Boston University, MIT, Emersons, Suffolk, Harvard, Boston Architectural College and Berklee College of Music the site is a passage of many college students between public transit, Back Bay, and the various institutions. As such, the project proposes a merger between the MBTA and YMCA that explores the possibility for educational program to be included. The programatic organization subdivides the program into two branches. Two bars - one recreational, one educational - move three dimensionally about the site to house a mix of programs, while creating a third element, public space. The urban strategy seeks to push and arrange the two program bars towards the back of the site in order to offer a dynamic public space to the city on this valuable street front. The project imitates and plays on its surrounding scale by creating a tower, as the terminus to the educational bar. The library tower holds the street edge on Massachusetts Avenue and hugs onto its adjacent building. As the bars come closer to the existing buildings on Boylston Street, they transition to a shorter and more suitable scale. The interplay between the two program bars creates public space within the building, and it is these spaces that hint at the possibility of cross-pollination between the mix of programs.
