Welcome to our Summer

Concept and editorial: Sam Cole, Design: Craig Cooper

We hope you like our summer brochure. It’s designed to be easier to use: the centre pages form an easy reference pull-out section illustrating our complete programme. Put it on your fridge, pin board or even notice board at work…never again will you overlook what’s on at South Shropshire’s Lively Arts Centre! Those of you who have enjoyed our exciting programme of live and recorded broadcasts will not be disappointed with this season’s offerings. We are screening two live plays from the National Theatre: the critically acclaimed This House and their current hit, starring Helen Mirren reprising her role as the Queen, The Audience. Shows

not to be missed, so do book early for them. Opera lovers will be pleased to see that not only are we to present Rossini’s La donna del lago and Britten’s Gloriana from The Royal Opera House, but also a stunning production of Don Carlo from The Salzburg Festival in late August, date to be announced. Fans of Andrea Bocelli are in for a treat - we have two screenings of his much

publicised Love in Portofino concert, recorded last year. To complete the line up, we have The Bolshoi Ballet with their staging of Romeo and Juliet, choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich live from the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. As for theatre, we are thrilled to have the marvellous Vamos Theatre back again. Their two previous productions Nursing Lives and Much Ado about Wenlock were such hits with our audience that we are delighted to be staging this year’s production, Finding Joy. If you have yet to see a Vamos show, we urge you to come along on 18 July, as a great evening is in store. We also have the wonderful Fetch Theatre Company, internationally renowned for their exciting style of visual theatre, featuring an amazing

array of Bunraku puppets. Live music this summer comes from Blazin’ Fiddles, one of the most exciting and memorable fiddle ensembles currently performing and

the Mid Wales Chamber Orchestra which has been wowing audiences in Wales and the Borders for the last three years. Finally, we are extremely lucky to have The Spooky Men’s Chorale. This world-famous group of singers is sure to delight with their wide-ranging repertoire – everything from Georgian table songs and Cole Porter

It’s 1974 and the corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and backbiting as Britain’s political parties battle to change the future of the nation, whatever it takes. In this hung parliament, the ruling party holds on by a thread. Votes are won and lost by one, fist fights erupt in the bars, and ill MPs are hauled in to cast their votes.

James Graham’s biting, energetic and critically-acclaimed new play strips politics down to the practical realities of those behind the scenes who roll up their sleeves, and on occasion bend the rules, to manoeuvre a diverse and conflicting chorus of MPs within the Mother of all Parliaments. Expansive ensembles and shimmering orchestration generate an opulence seldom heard in the composer’s comic works. In the hands of three of the leading bel canto voices of our time, Juan Diego Flórez (Count Almaviva in The Royal Opera’s Il barbiere di Siviglia), Joyce DiDonato (who sang the title role in Cendrillon with The Royal Opera last Season) and Colin Lee (Tonio in the 2012 revival of La Fille du régiment), La donna del lago promises to be a musical revelation. 'Mirren is superb' Evening Standard

For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace - a meeting like no other in British public life - it is private. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said. The Audience breaks this contract of silence and imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen. From young mother to grandmother, these private audiences chart the arc of the second Elizabethan Age. Politicians come and go through the revolving door of electoral politics, while she remains constant, waiting to welcome her next Prime Minister. The Audience reunites writer Peter Morgan and award-winning actress Helen Mirren following their collaboration on the acclaimed movie sensation The Queen.

Ludlow Assembly Rooms is working with The Fetch Theatre to present a Puppet Extravaganza this weekend, 14-16 June. Featuring performances, workshops, street puppetry, flash puppetry and more! Pick up a leaflet for full details.
