"It’s easy to be passionate about science because it’s everywhere. Observe any part of God’s beautiful creation, ask questions about how or why it works the way it does, and you’re doing science! Science embraces the natural curiosity in all of us. Skills like observing, asking questions, making predictions, forming explanations, using evidence to support your reasoning and communicating with others are integral to life outside the classroom. As our world becomes increasingly STEM-driven, mastery of those skills is essential for future success. We refine those skills everyday in science class, preparing students to effectively gather information and solve problems in the real world. How do we practice those skills is science class? With hands-on, creative experiments using current laboratory equipment and technology, of course. Science is fun!” — Mrs. Miotke

Flight Team Helping One Another in Crisis Dear Regis St. Mary Community, I would love to introduce you to a wonderful team of school counselors within our Catholic Schools community that have formed a school crisis response team. Our Flight Team is comprised of 30 school counselors (primarily from Catholic Schools within the Archdiocese of Portland) trained in crisis response, trauma, suicide prevention and intervention, grief and loss. In the event of a school crisis, the Flight Team is deployed in an effort to tend to the needs of the school, students and community. Since the Flight Team was developed this past year, we have been deployed several times to aid when a faculty member or a parent passed away, and have been available to offer valuable resources to our school neighbors. This Flight Team is a beautiful demonstration of love and care for one another. In a world where one does not have to look too far to witness disconnect, disharmony, and suffering, our Flight Team comes together, offers help and support and says, “You are not alone.” What a beautiful community Regis St. Mary is blessed to be a part of and how thankful I am to be a part of an amazing team. It's really good and really fun, sometimes disgusting, but really fun. My favorite thing to do with Mrs. Miotke has been learning about particles. I am so glad to have her here." — Hank Foltz, Third Grade

"What I love about Mrs. Miotke is that not only does she teach us the meaning of science, but she explains the reasoning behind it. She can also relate what we are learning to the real world and when we will use it in life. What I really appreciate is how we are constantly doing hands on learning. It's not just taking notes and answering questions in a book. We learn in a variety of ways, which personally helps me remember and learn better. I know that she is always available to help if I don't understand something, whether it be during lunch, break or just a quick email." — Alexis Vaughn, Class of 2019 WWW.REGISSTMARY.ORG •
