How to Treat a Rotator Cuff Injury at Home Rotator Cuff refers to the group of four muscles and a major tendon that supports, protects and stabilizes your shoulders. The muscles wrap the shoulder joint like a cuff, thus gaining the name. The muscles in the rotator cuff belong to the group of muscles called scapulohumeral muscles that connect the shoulder blade to the humerus or the upper arm bone. These muscles generally protect and stabilize the shoulder, especially during movements. The thing most miss about is, rotator cuff is also prone to injuries. Rotator cuff injuries may be brought by the trauma when someone hits your shoulders too hard or when you fall to the ground. It may also be caused by forceful arm and shoulder movements, inevitable wear and tear or tendon degeneration. Whatever the cause, it is important to have it treated immediately to avoid making it worse. The good news is, it can be treated without surgery, provided the injury is not that severe, by doing some rotator cuff treatment at home. So here are the home treatments that relieve pain, restore shoulder strength and avoid inflammations. Medication. Taking medications not only reduces the pain, but also helps you avoid inflammation. Physical Therapy. Performing shoulder exercises and stretches not only strengthens your rotator cuff, but also relieves pain and improves its overall function. Therapy also assists in the overall healing of the muscles. You may hire a therapist to assist you with the movements or do it yourself, provided you got the right knowledge on which exercises to perform and how to do it. Aside from undergoing therapy and taking medications, you may also do these procedures at home to help speed up your recovery: Rest. Keep your shoulder movements to a minimum. Limit the movements that require you to raise your arms above your head. Instead, practice gentle movements to keep joints and muscles from stiffing. Also avoid uncomfortable and strenuous activities for a time being. Talk with your doctor about how long you should rest. These cases usually take a couple of days to several weeks. Compress. To reduce pain and swelling, apply a cold compress or an ice pack within the first 48 hours of incurring the injury. Also apply it after performing your shoulder stretches and exercises. Meanwhile, apply hot compress 48 hours after incurring the injury to relieve the pain. Limit it to only 2 hours as having it longer may stiffen the muscles and intensify the pain. Then 2 to 3 days after incurring the injury, apply it on your shoulder while you perform your shoulder stretches and exercises.
