Sunshine, rain, warm days Everything is growing rapidly, our industry has never been busier. There is plenty of work around for landcapers, landscape contractors, arbororists, designers and contractors. But is the landscape industry in general doing enough to promote effective, practical and environmentally aware landscaping protocol and projects? (p31) Today, more than half of the world’s population lives in cities. As the urban population grows and the effects of climate change worsen,

our cities have to adapt. Cities need to accelerate their transition to a greener cleaner, healthier future. The landscaping industry will grow in size and importance over the next two decades as it becomes apparent that making our cities and towns greener drastically improves the quality of life for everyone. The work of the horticultural and landscaping colleges producing the next generation of professionals has never been more important. Have a good month.

25 years in the UK June 2016 marks 25 years of Etesia operating in the UK, and since its humble entry, the company has grown into one of the most innovative manufacturers in the groundscare industry. What started as an unknown company with just one product now has a presence in 40 countries with a product range of over 40. The Hydro 100 - the first ride-on mower with a direct rear ejection and integrated collection system took the French market by storm. Shortly after, it was brought to the shores of the UK. That was 25 years ago and now 2016 see’s Etesia with a multitude of market leading products covering every inch of the UK. “Very quickly, UK professionals understood the unique capacity and performance of that machine. Word spread about just how good

the Hydro 100 was and then more and more dealers throughout the UK wanted to become involved. A few years later, and based on the success of that machine, we were able to expand the range of products such as the Bahia, Attila and the Hydro 124. Quite soon there were a number of Etesia products gaining a great reputation in the UK,” commented Etesia President, Patrick Vives. So without doubt, Etesia’s 25 years of operating in the UK have been a resounding success “Etesia’s intention is to continue its growth in the UK market with additional products like the robotic mowers and the Pellenc range of battery-powered tools. All the new technologies are under the Etesia Green Technology banner which is where the future lies,” said Patrick. www.etesia.co.uk

Landscaping hailed a success Green-tech has supplied national Solar Park landscape specialist Orchard Groundcare with tree planting materials to landscape the largest grid connected Solar Park in the UK. Located in Kent, Orchard Groundcare won the contract to manage the landscaping and maintenance of the site which is located in South East England and is capable of powering the whole of Herne Bay. The huge solar farm is set over eight fields and cover a total of 213 acres. The site was subject to reseeding with a mix of grasses and wildflowers to restore and revitalise the grounds. Orchard Groundcare also planted 11,000 hedge plants and 9,500 trees to help screen the solar panels and encourage biodiversity and provide a habitat for local wildlife. Green-tech supplied them 13,500 spirals and canes, 1650 mesh guards and stakes

Success story A-Plant has been specifying Isuzu trucks in its fleet since 1999, based mainly around the hugely popular Isuzu 7.5 tonne chassis. However, recently the company has specified its first ever 11 tonne Isuzu rigid. The Isuzu Forward F110.210 chassis has been specified with Isuzu’s Easyshift automatic transmission and the 4x2 LWB rigid has been fitted with a beavertail body. This first Isuzu 11 tonner in the A-Plant fleet will have a working life of up to 7 years, covering approximately 350,000 kms over that period.

and 4000 Tubex shelters and stakes to do this. The landscaping was hailed a success and Green-tech have since secured a further three orders for John Chambers Wildflower seed from Orchard Groundcare. Wildflowers are not only recognised for their beauty and appearance but also the improved biodiversity and considerable green credentials they bring to a project. Richard Clarke, Commercial Director and Head of Solar Parks at Orchard Groundcare said, “For a project of this size we rely on our trade partners and Green-tech provided advice and supplied canes, spirals and tree guards. We value the advice and excellent service we always get from Green-tech and their willingness to work with us. The result is we have a site that we and our client are delighted with.”

The initial Isuzu F110.210 rigid has been specified to FORS Silver Standard, with side scan, reversing cameras, on-board weighing equipment for the axles, as well as Chapter 8 livery and beacons. “For most of the 20 years that Isuzu Truck has been established here in the UK, A-Plant has been a long-term partner with us. As one of the earliest customers to invest in the Isuzu brand, A-Plant has been part of the overall Isuzu truck success story here in the UK, with both companies growing significantly during that period,” Keith Child, marketing director at Isuzu Truck (UK) told The Landscaper. www.isuzutruck.co.uk

Pitch Focus 2016 ICL, along with specially selected partners - Syngenta and Bernhard and Company, recently hosted another successful Pitch Focus event. This year’s venue was at the Tottenham Hotspur Training Centre in Enfield. The popular educational event has been designed to offer a unique insight into the latest advancements in sports pitch maintenance, focusing on specific research, techniques and products which help support the effective management of premium sports turf. Christian Brain, Grounds Manager at Cheltenham College, found the event worthwhile: “I’ve found the day very informative and it’s great to be here at such a fantastic site. It’s also provided an ideal chance to network and speak to different people. I particularly enjoyed Henry Bechelet’s seminar – it was extremely useful and very entertaining.” Echoing Christian’s thoughts was Stan Wallace, Assistant Groundsman at Burton Albion FC, who said: “The seminars have been really interesting – especially the one about

Preventing pollution A below ground washpad water recycling system is, believes the Highspeed Group, the most cost effective and efficient biological system available. ClearWater’s increased popularity is seen by the company as being the result of its winning formula: “Keep the engineering and maintenance simple, ensure the system is effective and efficient yet remains affordable” Managing Director David Mears told The Landscaper “We offer two hose washing as standard and fit a top quality, high power (8 Bar), stainless steel pump for every hose. A clippings barrow is supplied, together with an oil alarm and automatic shut-off valve to protect the system’s clean water from contamination. Comfortable, high pressure, adjustable trigger operated water guns are standard and we even supply a squeegee to help clear the pad too. A large

national student-led sports-turf challenge. It is an academic test of turf management knowledge for student competitors who are enrolled at colleges throughout the UK on relevant courses of study. In teams of four, the students will embark on a two-hour competition consisting of paper-based multiple choice and short answer questions on turf management, plus a case study which will require a more in-depth written answer. The competition will also include live test samples for the physical identification of threats to turf health. The winning team will not only get their hands on a

trophy but will also receive a cheque for £500 which can be used towards items for the land-based college. In addition, students within the victorious team will be awarded a cash prize to be spent towards turf care books. With SALTEX being held in November, event organisers have decided that it would be unfair to open the competition to only that academic year’s intake (16/17). Therefore colleges may enter students who recently completed a qualification The Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) has revealed this summer (end of the previous academic year 15/16). Further investment in technology Rolawn has spent this past winter extending their Profresh facilities. The patented unique process that draws on a number of processes, including a vacuum, gas exchange and temperature controls, to extend turf shelf-life has proven to be very successful and subsequently made it extremely popular. As a result investment has gone into refining the process further and increasing the system capacity. By adding a third Profresh chamber, treatment capacity is increased by 75%. This will improve the consistency of turf by enabling more to be treated in a shorter time frame, which also helps greatly with efficiencies. The chilled storage building that houses all three chambers can now also hold all treated turf right up until the point where it is loaded on to vehicles. This is another plus point aiding both the effectiveness and consistency of the turf and its keeping qualities. Rolawn’s Sales and Marketing Director, Jonathan Hill told The Landscaper “Profresh is revolutionising turf sales in the UK. Healthy, high quality, virile, fast rooting turf is no longer the preserve of a ‘freshly harvested’ supply chain mentality. We have proven Medallion treated with Profresh is of the same outstanding market leading quality many days after harvesting as it was on the day of delivery. The salient fact is it lasts longer in the roll in prime condition”.

Starring role for BBC’s The Instant Gardener The first episode of the new series of the Instant Gardener previewed on Bank Holiday Monday with a flooded garden in York its focus and John Chambers Wildflower Seed assisting in its overhaul. The team behind John Chambers was approached in April to work with the 12 Yard Production Company on the new series of BBC’s The Instant Gardener. For the first episode the Instant Gardener himself focused on the different applications for wildflowers covering, turf, plugs and seed incorporating them into the garden overhaul at York. The John Chambers team spent the afternoon, demonstrating the intensive process and labour of love that goes into the creation of their wildflower seed mixes. As a supplier to the landscape trade the team understands the importance of the authenticity of the wildflower seed, its cleanliness and the reliability of germination. They created a mix of 8 British native wildflower types for the Instant Gardener including Buttercup, Oxeye Daisy, Salad Burnet,

Selfheal and Lady’s Bedstraw, the mix was well received and immediately incorporated into the garden makeover to accompany the wildflower turf, plugs and Yorkshire bluebells and cowslips. sales@green-tech.co.uk

Over recent years, Limagrain’s MM50 has been the number one choice for cricket groundsmen. Those representing grass roots, schools, local clubs and international test venues have all benefitted from using MM50 – and now, these groundsmen will see even better results after a new variety has been added to the mixture. MM50 now benefits from the addition of Alison - the latest fine leaved ryegrass from Limagrain. Other key features include fast recovery from wear and damage and high disease resistance. This superior mix already contains the perennial ryegrass cultivars, Venice and Malibu, which are renowned for providing a great sward for cricket use. With the inclusion of Alison, cricket groundsman can now look forward to a further improvement to the MM50 mix which will help them achieve a fantastic playing surface. MM50 is also treated with HEADSTART® GOLD -

Greetham Valley - in full control Adi Porter, course manager at Greetham Valley Golf Club, has said that he is now in full control of thatch build-up since using the SISIS Rotorake TM1000. “Over the past 21 years I have seen the percentage of thatch in the top 50mm rise from zero to 3.5, and I didn’t want this to continue, so I decided to look for a solution.” “The criteria for me had to be about the machine’s performance in thatch removal and the cleanliness of the operation, but also it had to be productive. The SISIS TM1000 matched all of the above.” The SISIS Rotorake TM1000 is a tractor mounted heavy duty scarifier and linear aerator and is un-rivalled when it comes to removing and controlling thatch. It includes a collector box and floating unit to follow ground contours and its contrarotating reel throws debris forward ensuring a clean, consistent groove resulting in an excellent finish when the time comes to scarify. “Since using the SISIS TM1000; the thatch in the top 50mm has reduced

Remember Johnsons of Whixley , national plant nursery, has been selected by The Landscape Group id verde to supply Gwendwr Gardens in West Kensington – a public garden to remember those killed in the Blitz. Johnsons secured the contract worth £13,000 following a competitive tender issued by Coventry-based The Landscape Group, part of the id verde Group. As part of the renovation works, overgrown foliage was cut back to make way for the new planting scheme supplied by Johnsons of Whixley, comprising of approximately 6,000 plants - mainly shrubs and herbaceous, of 44 different varieties. The new planting complements the different growing conditions within the site and will provide colour and interest throughout the year. A sunken garden, which is the focal point at the centre of the park, has also been filled with colourful plants and native flowers in shaded areas which will boost biodiversity. The garden first opened in 1949 after being gifted to what was then Fulham Council by the Gunter Estate and was built to remember residents from West Kensington who lost their lives in the Second World War bombings. Tony Coles, amenity sales manager at Johnsons of Whixley said: “We were delighted to be chosen by The Landscape Group id verde to supply this project. We hope the park can be enjoyed for years to come and that our native woodland flowers will add to the charm of this muchloved green space within the City of London.”

Fruit, glorious fruit! People’s Trust for Endangered Species launches the first ‘FruitFinder’ database as part of ongoing orchard conservation. There are around 5,000 fruit varieties grown in the UK, many of which are specific to a geographical area Over the last 10 years, PTES’ orchards team, with the help of over 700 volunteers and nearly 1500 orchard owners, has identified over 35,000 individual orchards in England and over 7,000 in Wales. Alarmingly, this work revealed that 90% of traditional orchards have been lost since the 1950s. Furthermore, 45% of the remaining orchards surveyed in England and 35% of orchards in Wales were found to be in declining condition as a habitat. By far the most common reason for this is lack of replacement tree replanting, meaning these remaining old orchards will quickly disappear unless action is taken. To help halt the decline in traditional orchards, over the last year a PTES orchard grant scheme has sent out trees and enough grafting kits to plant over 1,500 trees in traditional orchards across the UK. PTES has created several online practical guides covering various aspects of orchard management, such as pruning and grafting new trees, to encourage orchard owners to manage their orchards in a sustainable and wildlife-friendly manner. Traditional orchards are fantastic for wildlife as they are made up of several different habitats, including elements of woodland, hedgerow and meadow grassland. This mosaic of habitats is home to a range of biodiversity, including butterflies, bumblebees, birds, bats and beetles. enquiries@ptes.org

The Healing Power of Nature A high-end, mixed-use development that forms part of a new urban township called Medini in Iskandar, Malaysia, is nearing completion. The flagship scheme for Medini features over 2.0 hectares of green space designed by UK and Singapore based Grant Associates and aims to promote residents’ and visitors’ wellbeing through therapeutic horticulture. The Oasis is a three dimensional green space with landscape features on multiple levels including a central ravine, colonnade, water walls and overhead walkways. Grant Associates took the structure and physiology of a fruiting tree as its inspiration for The Oasis. In this concept, the garden takes root and grows in harmony with the architecture. Shoots and stems (paths and linking walkways) create a three dimensional network across the space where fruits and pods (individual gardens) occur at key nodes. These nodes provide protective spaces for seeds and flowers (art, play and water features). The key theme of multi-layered green space continues into the five

zones in the form of sky-rise, rooftop gardens and vertical planting. The planting palette uses many indigenous species to Malaysia and South East Asia that allow the gardens to be rooted in the ecological and local context. Plant species traditionally related to healing have been incorporated throughout the scheme. The overall aim of the landscape concept is to interweave nature into the built environment, emphasise the interconnectedness of all life forms and enable people to experience the healing. www.grant-associates.uk.com

reputable seed business, we offer our technical expertise so growers make the right choices and get the most out of their purchases. Along with the support of technical advisers, Nickerson Direct also links with the main Nickerson web site where we provide product sheets and grower’s guides for each crop.” Being part of Group Limagrain, the largest seed company in the EU and with significant investment in research and development, gives Nickerson Direct unique access to proven and reliable products. “Through Nickerson we can pass on these advantages and supply quality seed directly from breeder to farmer.” www.nickersondirect.co.uk

With this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show now at an end and as each of the show gardens sadly gets dismantled, it’s worth recognising the lesspublicised skill which went into creating some of the stunning gardens. A great example is the stone structure in the ‘God’s Own County - A Garden for Yorkshire’. Inspired by the medieval Great East Window at York Minster, the structure formed the centrepiece of the Matthew Wilson’s colourful garden - which won a silver medal and the ‘People’s Choice’ prestigious award.

Greening our cities: are we doing enough? Climate change, energy security, biodiversity losses, growing urbanisation… people are increasingly aware, especially in our densely packed island, of their own relationship with the environment. Multiple ‘green’ initiatives and developments abound, which can be confusing and difficult to identify. Is the landscape industry doing enough to promote effective, practical and environmentally aware landscaping protocol and projects? Ffion Llwyd-Jones investigates.

Why is it important? As society became more urbanised through the 20th century, the continuing exploitation of natural resources seemed unrelated to the everyday needs of clean air, water, food, power and transport. Not until the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity (1992), was there a formal acknowledgment of society’s dependence on biodiversity. Since then, we have increasingly understood that ‘greening’ our urban areas impacts our life quality,

What is ‘greening’ anyway? In among all the multiple definitions, one allencompassing concept is the ‘Green Infrastructure’ (GI), described by the Landscape Institute in its 2013 position statement1 as ‘the network of natural and semi-natural features, green spaces, rivers and lakes that intersperse and connect villages, towns and cities.’ Taking that concept into our urban areas, such ‘greening’ can be seen as having ‘the potential, when integrated properly into the built environment (and the wider greenspace beyond) to provide a vast array of functions and benefits to all stakeholders.’ (UK Green Building Council, 2015)2

of the problems we’re dealing with, that people take for granted the eco-system services that nature provides, but when those services are overwhelmed we have to boost nature to try to fix the problem… we have to fix our processes that are causing the pollution in the first place.’ Who’s doing what? Perhaps surprisingly, London does not qualify as having the most polluted air in the UK: a World Health

not only contributing to cleaner air for our citizens, but also, through the use of renewable energy sources and low-carbon technologies, offering future jobs. Indeed, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan’s manifesto3 pledged a ‘greener, cleaner London’, where ‘environmental checks are not simply a side concern to be weighed up against economic and social benefits.’ Speaking to The Landscaper magazine the Mayor of London said: ‘Poor air quality is a ticking time-bomb for our health, particularly for Londoners in the most deprived parts of the city.’ And as Gary Grant, Green Infrastructure Services, comments: ‘There are people that are yet to understand what our relationship with nature is, and that’s at the heart

Organisation (WHO) report published in May 20164 found that of the 50+ UK towns and cities included in its database, Port Talbot (South Wales) is the most polluted, ahead of London, Glasgow, Southampton and Leeds; the cleanest UK city in the WHO list is Inverness, followed by Bournemouth, Newcastle and Sunderland. Indeed, Bournemouth wants to be ‘internationally recognised for championing its green economy credentials through pursuing its goal to become a Green Economy Leader by 2020.’5 And Councillor Mike Greene, Cabinet Member for Transport, Sustainability & Carbon Management, said: ‘By seeking to become a Green Economy Leader this will ensure visibility of Bournemouth’s positive action in the global effort to tackle climate change whilst also enabling the town to attract, retain and develop leading green and sustainable businesses and world class talent.’

‘So, are government intervention, and regulation and legislation necessary for the greening of our cities to be reality?’ ‘A collaborative marketing strategy between all organisations would be beneficial,’ comments Paul Cowell, PC Landscapes. He adds that the Landscape Institute has done great work around the green infrastructure, along with the Green Building Council, and the Royal Jennifer Gayler

introducing nature into cities is what is missing,’ adds Jennifer Gayler. ‘Other than in high profile projects, landscaping in often the very last thing being considered (in smaller, everyday projects) and, in terms of budget, is the one always pushed to the back and has the smallest amount of money spent on it. There has to be a major shift in thinking, which is probably down to awareness of the research being done about the importance of human interaction with nature, and its effects on wellbeing and health. And the implications of that in the future. So that it can be taken seriously. And that’s the thinking behind the [2016 European Landscape] conference.’

was all about smog, which you can see, and it was very obvious when there were very bad conditions because you could see and taste it. Now it’s been replaced with ‘invisible’ pollution that you can’t see it - and that makes it more difficult to raise public awareness, and win people over.’ She adds that Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) legislation is often not taken seriously by local authorities, which need to become proactive and get involved earlier in landscaping schemes. ‘It’s a bit like Health & Safety, which wasn’t take seriously until it came into legislation – and that’s what has to happen with the sustainability

‘Better cities will come with a new philosophy, which understands our place as part of nature, not as deluded creatures pretending to operate outside of it.’ of landscaping.’ And Jennifer Gayler, Jennifer Gayler Garden Design, believes that ‘while there are people and organisations who are aware of the need to have nature in cities… there isn’t a central, coordinated movement to introducing nature into cities.’ Roger Mabbott adds that there is a need to get government involved in that major shift: ‘Perhaps we need a law for landscaping.’ The lack of a strong legislative framework, such as possibly in some rural areas, may lead to failure to incorporate a detailed landscape plan. As Gary Grant comments: ‘Some rural authorities may need to learn from urban areas, where they are tougher… In some cases, the planning authorities will expect a landscape plan, and some boroughs will insist, especially in London, on a green roof, and encouraging people to do these things, as well as being required through planning.’ ‘The lack of a central, coordinated movement to

What more can we do? Paul Cowell believes ‘we could always be doing more’, including promoting projects within local plans to meet bio-diversity aspects and mitigate environmental impacts in new developments. He adds that ‘the architects and developers need to see the financial case that it [GI] does actually pay – there is evidence starting to emerge, although it will be a slow process to build up the statistics and evidence. We know it does, but that doesn’t always show in the bottom line of profit.’ For Gary Grant, functionality is a key word: ‘We need to

look at multi-functionality, we need to look at biodiversity, and how all these different systems work together to provide us with all the things we need. Landscape architects need to go for multi-functionality, and an ecological approach, in a more rigorous way – and some of them are already doing that – not just say ‘it is’, but how ‘it is’. We’re in a transitional phase, things are changing.’ As Janine Pattison comments, ‘It can all be done if the will is there early on. When greening up happens in a

city, it’s almost universally welcomed – things like green roofs, green walls, pocket parks, even just getting trees in containers in a street.’ She believes the master planning of sites has to be taken seriously, ‘including sustainable drainage and sustainable planting – it can’t just be retrofitted at the end of the job.’ Jennifer Gayler says that one of the main roles of the landscaping industry is sustainability, ‘and being very aware of the environment, and advising and educating clients on the value of

biodiversity. And also insisting on using sustainable materials, natural rather than reconstituted products, reusing material already on site, not importing – it’s an enormous role to play.’ Gary Grant agrees that the industry is good at education, adding: ‘When you involve a contractor in the design process it’s a better design; I think the industry is helping to educate the designers, who sometimes may lack the practical process and who may not know enough about plants. You’ve got to know what you’re trying to achieve, and it has to be backed by science. How does the plant trap pollution? And how does it do that? We need to do it step by step and take the scientists with us.’ However, he adds that ‘we can’t not do it because we’re waiting for a scientist to tell us exactly what to do: We

‘It can all be done if the will is there early on.’ already know trees are good, we already know that green roofs cool buildings, we already know certain plants absorb air pollution... but there’s no reason not to put as much soil and vegetation as we can, because we know it will make the city a better place. There’s no reason not to do more planting on new projects, and retrofitting on older buildings. If we can vegetate walls, (the Rubens at the Palace Hotel’s living walls), then we can do almost anything really.’ Councillor Michael Green, Bournemouth

Janine Pattison adds that recent methods6 of trying to put a monetary value on large trees in London may yield some positive results. ‘The big tree by the Dorchester in Park Lane is apparently worth £750,000 in amenity value and biodiversity. If a developer wants to take a tree down to, for example, put up a bigger building, they have to understand the value of what’s been lost, and the value of it.’ And Paul Cowell suggests ‘a better language’ is needed to get the message across, and join up all the various policies; ‘there’s no key driver or necessity to say it has to be checked … No inspector to look at the green spaces to say yes, that’s acceptable – you’ve met the initial design and access statement, you’ve met the planning, it’s not just the bare essentials.’ Perhaps, as Gary Grant put it in the Introduction to his 2012 book7: ‘Better cities will come with a new philosophy, which understands our place as part of nature, not as deluded creatures pretending to operate outside of it.’

Photo Competition Organisers of SALTEX 2016 have launched a photo competition in which one winner will receive two VIP tickets to SALTEX and the IOG Industry Awards, PLUS overnight accommodation.

The competition is open to everyone – grounds teams, greenkeepers, gardeners, park keepers, horticulturalists – it doesn’t matter who sends the photos in as there are no entry requirements. It might be a photo of a great project, a lake like no other, a beautifully crafted landscape garden, a unique pitch pattern, or maybe a putting green as picturesque as a postcard – it can be anything at all, just as long as it is relevant to the industry. Those entering the competition are also welcome to include themselves in the shot as it allows everyone to see the person behind the photo. Selected by a SALTEX judging panel, each month one picture will be selected as the monthly winner. The monthly winning photos will then all compete against each other in which only one can be victorious. Green Climber Kilworth Machinery are the sole UK importers of the MDB range of remote controlled mowers. MDB of Italy have had many years experience in remote controlled machinery for commercial and military applications and have now transferred this expertise into the ground care market. After successful testing in the UK two ranges have been introduced, the Green Climber LV and the Mini Green Climber. Both types are designed to operate in areas that would be hazardous to an operator walking behind or sitting on a power unit. The Green Climber LV is available in 4 versions from 29HP upwards. The LV300 is the smallest model with a 29HP diesel engine and adjustable tracks extendable from 1.15m to 1.55m width. The standard flail mower on the LV300 is 1.15m working width. The LV400 and LV500 are powered by Yanmar 40HP and 50HP water cooled diesel engines respectively, while the 56HP LV600 has a high torque Kohler diesel engine and extra heavy duty track units. The engines have been specially developed for working on slopes and allow the Green Climber to operate safely on gradients up to 60 degrees in any direction. Stability is ensured by rubber tracks which are hydraulically

extendable in width from 1300mm to 1700mm. Engine cooling is by means of a self cleaning “CleanFixâ€? reversible fan system that automatically keeps the radiator and grill clear to prevent overheating. A 1.3m cut flail mower is fitted as standard. The mower is designed and built for constant use in harsh environments and has 400mm of hydraulic side shift to assist with cutting up close to trees and fencing. The flail mower is easily removed and other attachments including trencher, snow blower, snow plough, sweeper and hedge cutter can be mounted on the Green Climber. The Mini Green Climber is similar in principle to the LV Green Climber but is lighter and more compact. It is powered by a 25HP twin cylinder air cooled diesel engine. The flail mower is 1.0m working width and sits between the rubber tracks to give a total width of 1500mm. In order to maintain the same 60 degree bank capabilities as the larger machine, the engine on the Mini Green Climber is self levelling. All Green Climbers are radio controlled by a robust and ergonomic hand held unit with joystick and push button control of all functions. Radio control range is 300m with automatic shut down outside this range. Prices for the Green Climber range start at ÂŁ23920.00 + VAT. mark@kilworthmachinery.co.uk

Save up to 20 percent Toro distributor Lely Turfcare is reminding customers that there is one easy way to save money and be prepared when it comes to machinery maintenance and repairs this summer. Toro’s MVP Filter packs conveniently provide all the oil and air filters recommended for replacement during the first 400 to 500 hours of operation and are designed for specific Toro models providing the right filters come each maintenance interval. Plus, buying MVP packs can save up to 20 percent compared to buying the individual parts. Michael Hampton, Lely’s turfcare parts manager, comments: “Toro MVP Filter packs are a prudent investment that makes it easy for operators to stay on top of scheduled maintenance. It is a good move to stock up to make sure machines operate at their full potential round the clock, keeping machinery performing consistently and constantly without the risk of extended downtime.”

Described as a veritable ‘packet of peace of mind’, Toro MVP Filter packs make routine air and oil filter maintenance easy and hassle-free and even provide instructions on when to carry out maintenance depending on the model and number of hours of use to avoid that easy temptation to run turf machinery harder and longer without proper maintenance. www.toro.com

Lee Evans, head groundsman at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, claims that the Dennis G860 is the ‘perfect machine’ for him and his grounds staff. “The best feature on the G860 is the flexibility it offers - you can simply change a cassette as opposed to buying a new machine. They are so reliable and seem to go forever. They also give a great cut, they are light and they leave an excellent stripe behind them.” www.dennisuk.com

High-grass, steep slope, difficult terrain! Mowing on steep and difficult terrain has always been a challenge for the machine operator and the AS 940 and AS 940 XL ride on brushcutter have been especially developed for this demanding application. Equipped with 27hp, 4wd, limited-slip differential and cross blade, the AS 940 easily mows dense, high grass and undergrowth on terrain where other mowers would have been forced to give up. With ride-on brushcutters, steep slopes can be mown conveniently and economically. However, there are always areas where mowing is very unpleasant or unsafe for the operator, including steep terrain, loose substrate, mowing under trees and bushes, along hedges and even areas around wasp nests. However AS Motor now have the solution - the NEW AS 940 Remote Control which offers all the benefits of the standard AS 940 but with the option to convert to remote control when required. The main remote-controlled functions include: • Professional remote control unit with 300m range • Adjustment of the cutting height • Engine on/off function • Mower deck on-off switch • Steering via remote control • Maximum incline transverse to the slope in remote control operation 39° (ride-on operation 23°) • Emergency stop of the machine Tel: 08450 773773 www.psdgroundscare.co.uk

Two Versatile Hydrostatic Mini Riders Two new mini ride-on mowers from Lawnflite have been designed to operate in compact space and manoeuver easily around trees, flowerbeds, bushes or other obstacles in the garden. As part of Lawnflite’s SMART ride-on mower range, which is ideal for gardeners whose use of a tractor is restricted, these mowers are easy to operate, even in gardens with

many turns and corners. Within the range are two hydrostatic-drive mini-riders, offering improved manoeuvrability and dynamic braking. The new Lawnflite LMiniRider60SDHEm side discharge and LMiniRider60RDHE rear discharge Ride-On Mowers are ideal as the first step up from a walk behind mower, with each of them having a generous 60cm/24” cut. Both machines benefit from Briggs & Stratton engines, the SDHE with the 875 series engine, whilst the RDHE is powered by a 1000 series, each with 223cc capacity, and a rated power output of 3.7kW and 3,300 min-1. Coupled with electric starting and 1.2 litre fuel tanks, the mini-riders are powerful, yet easy to use machines. The hydrostatic transmission on the LMiniRider60SDHE allows for smooth and precise manoeuvrability with the velocity being controlled with a manual lever on the side of the dash, meaning that forward and reverse speed can be adjusted without any clutching or gear changing. The optional side discharge feature allows the clippings to be returned directly back to the lawn. There is also an optional Mulch kit. Weighing in at 123kg, and with dimensions of just 158cm (l) / 78cm (w) / 110 cm (h), the machine is reassuringly stable, despite its small stature. The velocity of the LMiniRider60RDHE is controlled with a foot lever meaning that forward and reverse speeds can be easily altered without any clutching or gear changing, and keeping the drivers hands free to steer at all times. Both of the Lawnflite ride on mowers also feature a tight turning radius of 46cm /18” which really adds to the versatility and manoeuvrability, all the while providing a comfortable place to sit and drive.

Dealing with everything As part of a full mowers replacement programme, Bassetlaw District Council in North Nottinghamshire has purchased two Toro LT3340 high performance reel mowers in a bid to maintain the district’s multitude of diverse grassy areas. With North Nottinghamshire being a largely rural area, Keith Somers, Operational Services Manager (Hort), explains why Bassetlaw District Council chose to invest in the Toro LT3340s: “The two new mowers have replaced older machines as part of a replacement programme of existing machinery we have with Toro and UK distributor Lely Turfcare. They have joined another four Toros that we already operate here. Since the mowers arrived on site on February 2016, Keith says they have been used to maintain “parks, cemeteries, closed church yards, housing estates and sports areas”. “The main benefits of these machines are that they are able to deal with both small and large areas of grass across all of these different spaces,” he adds.

From light trimming to mowing dense, overgrown areas, the LT3340 can be tailored to suit a variety of mowing applications. www.toro.com / www.lely.com

weed control

Early Easter doesn’t mean it is spring! With some warm sunshine during early April it seems as though spring has finally sprung. But with frost later in the month and lower than usual temperatures predicted, we cannot get sucked into - thinking it’s time to apply selective herbicides and complete other spring type actions. Alan Abel reports. With daisies that have ‘over wintered’ and dandelions popping up everywhere it is tempting to get the sprayer out. However, the uptake of the herbicide may not be successful unless perfect conditions are present. That is not only the weather conditions, but the water condition and the sprayer condition. This includes the correct nozzle selection giving the right water volume for the herbicide being applied.

Also, don’t forget that if the temperature is going to drop over night after an application, then scorch is likely to take place. The spray droplets are on or blown to the tips of the grasses or crop and when frost forms, that is what causes the scorch effect. This is a phenomenon that has been seen in many fields after early spray applications by the farming fraternity this year. Scorch will severely set-back the grass growth - that we are desperate to have this year, so it MUST be that a spring flush really arrives before the sprayer temptation takes hold. When Easter is early, as it was this year, Turf Managers see that as the starting gun for the season ahead, but it’s not the case. We must wait for the right conditions to prevail and patience is an important virtue. When discussions where mooted as to the fixing of the Easter date, that would be a good thing in our industry. When the right time does come for applying selectives; then a tank mix with a soluble fertilizer should be considered to get the grass sward really moving. The pH of the water being used is so important and buffers should always be used to bring the water acidity to the correct level. Manganese and Phosphites that are quickly available to the plant through the leaf would be worth looking for. It must be brought to your attention that this year will be the last time that the three way mixes of phenoxys that we have been used to will be able to be applied. In 2017 we will see a big turn-around in terms of cost - when it comes to weed control in fine and amenity turf areas. 01325 324 277 or visit www.completeweedcontrol.co.uk Alan Abel is a director of Complete Weed Control

weed control

As business continues to rapidly increase, Simon Akerman, Complete Weed Control area manager for London South East, London Central and London North East has invested in a range of new equipment to keep operations at the highest possible standard. Weed-IT is the most advanced application equipment currently available for weed control on pavements and hard surfaces. It is a computer controlled herbicide application system consisting of a shrouded spraying head mounted on the front of a purpose built articulated carrier vehicle. Within the shrouded head are sensor units which detect the presence of weeds and trigger the appropriate spray nozzles to apply accurately the correct amount of herbicide just to those weeds and their immediate surroundings. Weed-IT not only produces exceptionally high levels of weed control but it significantly reduces herbicide usage and guarantees greater safety for the operator and the public alike.

Day-to-day business more efficient Visitors to this year’s ARB show learnt about a range of well established, effective weed control solutions from Nomix Enviro. • Ecoplug Max – a safe and effective alternative for controlling cut stump regrowth • Nomix Total Droplet Control (TDC) system - a unique, highly effective targeted low volume herbicide application system, ideal for tree bases • Nomix Stem Master – a stem injection herbicide applicator for invasive weeds such as Japanese knotweed and woody stem plants like buddleia. Nomix products help make day-to-day business more efficient and effective for forestry and amenity professionals. Gerard Roberts, landscape gardener at Derby County Council advocates the Ecoplugs in particular. “Ecoplugs are very good at preventing re-growth on cut stumps,” he explains. “Because the plugs are sealed, the operators don’t come into direct contact with the herbicide, which makes things much easier for the team when they are out and about. The special drill bit ensures the correct depth hole is drilled every time – it virtually eliminates any risk of error.” 01264 388050 www.nomixenviro.co.uk

Attendance records broken Over 3000 visitors enjoyed plenty of fair weather and entertainment as The ARB Show returned to Westonbirt the National Arboretum on 3rd and 4th June, building on the last year’s successful move to the venue with attendance records broken once again. Sponsored by STIHL for the 12th consecutive year, with its massive variety of exhibitors and technical demonstrations, the annual trade show highlighted the professionalism, skills and range of products and services that Arboriculture has to offer. A variety of exhibitors presented buyers with the best range of equipment and services that the show has ever had to offer. There was lots to keep Arborists, their families and members of the public entertained from the Inch Perfect Trials bike display team and their fearless stunts, which included jumping over wood chippers, to the Climbing wall which was popular with everyone from youngsters to their

grandparents. There were also Knot tying, Aerial rescue and throwline competitions educating and engaging visitors. Show visitors were also granted free entry to Westonbirt and its stunning new Treetop walkway. With attractions occupying arborists and their families many of them made a day of it, bringing their picnics and taking in the show ground and then the famed collection of trees next door, contributing to a vibrant atmosphere. The UK3ATC Climbing competitions were held over the 2 days pulling in spectators supporting the climbers and getting absorbed by the skill and effort of more than 50 competitors across the Novice, Expert and Premier categories. This year’s show attracted more tree-loving members of the public than ever before spreading awareness of the value and importance of the trade and the many benefits of trees. The ARB Show at Westonbirt further cemented its place as an essential date in all calendars. www.trees.org.uk

New wave of tree planting England could be on the verge of a new tree planting boom after a forestry innovation fund launched by a Government minister at a Confor event received applications to plant more than 1000 hectares of new woodland. Rory Stewart MP launched the £1 million Forestry Innovation Fund at Modern Forestry: Unleashing the Rural Potential at Westminster last November. Now, Forestry Commission figures have revealed a very strong response to the fund, which encourages schemes that will promote the growth of the forest industry in their region and have the support of their Local Enterprise Partnership. The Woodland Creation Planning Grant (WCPG) is financed by the fund, to address common complaints that significant upfront costs are holding back potential planting schemes. The WCPG pilot ran from December 2015 to February 2016. Forestry Commission England received 11 applications, offering grants to all applicants and 10 of these offers are being taken forward - relating to proposals for a total of 1,064 hectares of new productive woodland and ranging

from 33 to 339 hectares in area. Stuart Goodall, Chief Executive of Confor, said: “This is excellent news, but it is vital that these schemes move to rapid approval. “If this scheme works as both we and Government hope, then it can act as a catalyst to drive up new planting in England, which has been disappointingly low in recent years.” Mr Goodall, who received confirmation of the £1 million fund in a letter from Chancellor George Osborne ahead of last November’s Westminster conference, added: “This scheme shows that a relatively modest sum of money can unlock significant new planting schemes and we look forward to further innovative approaches by the UK Government.” Confor’s recently expressed disappointment that only 564 hectares of new woodland was created in England between April 2015 and March 2016, a fraction of the of the amount needed to meet the Westminster Government’s annual target of 5,000 hectares. This has led to concerns, from the nursery sector in particular, of a crisis of confidence in the forestry sector.

Tree Map of 280 Million Trees Aerial mapping company Bluesky is completing an extensive update of the National Tree Map which uniquely identifies the location, height and canopy cover of more than 280 million trees nationwide. The update, which covers more than 40,000 square kilometres – an area equivalent to twice the size of Wales, includes large amounts of East Anglia, the South West, Midlands and North East of England. The methodology and workflow for the creation of Bluesky’s National Tree Map has also been improved with advanced new algorithms, increasing the automation of much of the process as well as improving the detail and accuracy. “The National Tree Map is already supporting a wide range of organisations with a diverse set of applications, ranging from insurance risk assessment to picking up fa llen leaves before they block drains,” commented Rachel Tidmarsh, Managing Director of Bluesky. “We have also taken the opportunity to revisit our original production algorithms

and integrate new data for the enhanced identification of trees.” The 40,000 square kilometres of newly updated National Tree Map data represents more than a quarter of the original dataset, and includes a central point location as well as accurate height attributes and area calculations for around 75 million trees. By improving the algorithms used to create the National Tree Map, Bluesky has been able to reduce the human interaction required to create and validate the data, and has further improved tree detection by incorporating special Colour Infrared (CIR) data, known as the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), into the production process. Bluesky National Tree Map data has already proved crucial to a number of real world applications and research projects; helping the London Borough of Bromley prioritise its autumn street cleansing programme, supporting Walsall Council’s ambition to turn its part of ‘the Black Country green’ and assisting the Woodland Trust to undertake assessments of the scale of current tree cover and develop resilient treescapes. www.bluesky-world.com

Landmark research A landmark research project, designed to help gardeners more effectively combat the threat from slugs and snails, has been launched by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). The year-long research project, the first of its kind to be conducted under garden conditions, is being run by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and BASF, the only UK manufacturer of nematodes (which biologically control slugs and snails), will help scientists address gaps in their understanding of how best to tackle these common garden pests. The damage wrought by slugs and snails is an ongoing frustration for gardeners. In seven of the past 10 years slugs and snails headed the RHS’ annual list of the top garden pests of the year, which is based on enquiries to the charity’s Gardening Advice Service. The project, which will test six different control strategies, including those most favoured by gardeners, will help to identify which combination of treatments can provide the best results, depending on the environment and individual characteristics of gardens. The creation of tailor-made strategies combining multiple control methods, also known as Integrated Pest Management, will give gardeners the knowledge and tools to make a real difference in their battle against slugs and snails. RHS scientist Dr Hayley Jones, who is leading the research said: “The damage slugs and snails do to plants has, over the years, led to the development of a wide array of control methods, but these animals are still a persistent problem, which means the current treatments are not working as well as hoped. “By conducting scientifically robust research into which combination of treatments are the most effective, gardeners will for the first time have access to guidance on which method best suits their unique circumstances. What this could mean is that in years to come slugs and snails will drop down the table of gardeners’ most troublesome pests.”

The Savage Garden The National Trust for Scotland’s spectacular Inverewe Garden in Poolewe has added a slightly sinister new feature for 2016 – a garden of carnivorous plants. The Savage Garden has been created close to the pond in the beautiful Wester-Ross garden, featuring striking and unusual carnivorous species including the famous Venus Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula). Amongst the collection are the distinctive Trumpet Plant (Sarracenia flava), which took on the role of a triffid in the 1962 film Day of the Triffids. Head gardener Kevin Ball told The Landscaper “The main attraction will, no doubt, be the Venus flytraps, an insectivorous plant which children will have the opportunity to “feed” under supervision. When first seen in action, these small plants are awe-inspiring. They are without doubt the most famous of all carnivorous plants. “A small raised bog has been created to display the yellow Trumpet Plant. It’s named for its tall flowers with pendulous, bright yellow petals – that happen to smell like male cat pee!” Originally from North America and South America, these exotic species are an exciting addition to the garden which is famous for its amazing collection of international plants. Garden founder Osgood Mackenzie was a pioneering plantsman, collecting specimens from all over the world to grow at the garden he created from scratch, on a peninsula of bare rock.

Get global recognition Growers of cut flowers are encouraged to make themselves known and enter the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) International Grower of the Year Awards (IGOTY) 2017. In partnership with Founding Partner, FloraCulture International (FCI), the awards recognise best practice in horticultural production. In addition to a category for ‘Cut Flowers and Foliage’ there are also categories for ‘Young Plants’ and ‘Finished Plants and Trees’. Winning the gold cut flowers award in 2016 was Arcadia Chrysanten, Netherlands. Silver went to Flash Tarim Ürünleri Ltd. Sti. (Flash Flowers), Turkey. Arcadia Chrysanten, Netherlands, specialises in the cultivation and marketing of bunched and disbudded chrysanthemums, producing 50 million high quality branches a year for sale in both Eastern and Western Europe. Constantly looking for innovative shapes and colours, the company produces 20 varieties of chrysanthemum which are market and customer-oriented. It has expanded its range with disbudded chrysanthemums in particular, as well as through new species and by adapting to the season. Bart van Ruijven of Arcadia Chrysanten, said, “For Arcadia it was a great honour to be nominated for the AIPH International Grower of the Year Award. For us it felt like a crown on our work. The following days we received many congratulations and gifts to congratulate us on our victory. To this day we still carry proudly that we have won this award, and we try to use all the positivity of this award in our continued business operations.” Once again the awards will take place during IPM Essen, Germany. The deadline for entries is 31 July 2016. www.aiph.org/groweroftheyear

Pollenation initiative which aims to promote and protect the British honey bee. The John Chambers team has worked in partnership with the BBKA to create a honey bee wildflower seed mix that creates areas of beautiful lush wildflowers particularly attractive to the honey bee. The honey bee mix, like all John Chambers wildflower seeds, were cleaned and blended by hand and packed in bespoke-designed Eat Natural packets. Packets of wildflower seeds are being given away free as part of a multi-channel campaign spearheaded by Eat Natural designed to celebrate the humble honey bee and its importance in creating bio-diversity and improving the environment surrounding us. The Pollenation initiative will distribute beehives made from upcycled wooden Eat Natural pallets that not only supply a home for honey bees but also help the beekeeper understand the bees’ activity by tracking bee health and behaviour, monitoring honey yield and gathering data which will give scientists access to unprecedented data on bee behaviour and will become invaluable in the fight to save British honey bees.

£22 million development Hardscape has provided modern landscaping materials and techniques for vibrant Teeside University and triple award-winning new-build, The Curve. Working in partnership with leading multi disciplinary Architects, Austin-Smith:Lord and contractors, BAM and Cleveland Land Services Ltd, the company helped to form an iconic central focus in the heart of Middlesbrough. The £22 million development represents the high aspirations of the university and provides an attractive environment for students, staff and the local community, with popular public walkway, Southfield Road, running through the centre of the campus. The dramatic golden curved building and giant plasma screen on the side of the Student Centre provide an enjoyable all year round outdoor space, ideal for events. Hardscape supplied the bespoke paving and associated landscape walling for the vast 10,000m2 area using high-tech in-house facilities to design the production details. A raised sculptural lawn feature with a sitting edge, in a

complex elliptical shape was constructed as a focal point for the area - an ambitious architectural design that was first mocked up in a 3D model to develop production and cutting details. Royal White granite was selected as the material for its workability, durability and as a light silver stone that creates a brighter space. Southfield Road is adopted by Middlesbrough Council and they were particularly concerned with maintenance of the highway over its design life. A bespoke but very traditional bogan sett paving pattern in Magma blended granite was selected to create warmth and interest in the expansive paved areas. This created a striking, yet hardwearing design for the high volumes of pedestrians and vehicles, meeting the demands of both Teesside University and Middlesborough Council. Contemporary finishes included three metre high granite totem poles, with the University logo etched onto them – this was achieved using the Hardscape ‘artscape’ manufacturing process that uses an abrasive sandblasting

technique with high precision to engrave unique artwork and text. www.hardscape.co.uk

Priming slurry Natural Paving Products has announced the arrival of Pavetuf Priming Slurry. The specially formulated slurry provides an exceptional bond between the mortar base and stone or porcelain paving. Pavetuf Priming Slurry is ideal for a variety of applications including driveways, paths, patios and light commercial spaces. The cementitious mixture is also suitable for bonding the mortar base onto concrete or screed. However, where Pavetuf Priming Slurry really comes into its own is in the bedding of porcelain paving. Whilst laid like any other flagstone, porcelain-paving products are not porous and as such require extra support when adhering them to the mortar bed. Pavetuf Priming Slurry is specifically designed to provide this additional support and

give an outstanding bond between the new mortar base and stone or porcelain paving. Pavetuf Priming Slurry has been designed with userfriendliness in mind and only requires the addition of water before it can be applied in a quick and easy manner. Taking only three to five minutes to mix, the slurry can be applied as soon as the paving elements have been cleaned. Available in 17kg tubs, the slurry has a nominal coverage of 12.75m2 and an hour’s workability. The Pavetuf range is designed to offer high quality installation, maintenance and protection products for all hard landscaping needs. The collection now includes fully breathable sealants that can be applied as soon as the stone is laid; a variety of cleaning products, including General Cleaner, Deep Cleaner, Rust Remover and GreenOff Cleaner; a Salt Eraser that removes efflorescence and prevents its reappearance; a high quality, Sand Crete sealer that also acts as a joint hardener, protecting against sand loss, weed growth and staining; and a Jointing Mortar and NEW! Jointing Compound. HOAF WEED BURNERS www.naturalpaving.co.uk www.pavetuf.co.uk

Natural Inspiration In a move to encourage the use of natural products in design and build, Miles-Stone of Southampton have recently opened their display garden to the public and are encouraging landscapers and designers to send customers on an inspirational visit. For over 40 years Miles-Stone have been supplying the south of England with high-quality, affordable natural stone, landscaping and building materials to the industry. Specialising in paving, walling, rockery and chippings, the company has built a reputation for a huge range of stone from affordable to luxury, with fast delivery times and keen trade prices. Managing director, Roy Miles, told The Landscaper: “Very often we have to explain to homeowners why natural is

the best way to go. Often you’ll see customers comparing inferior concrete imitations to a natural flagstone which they think will be expensive. What’s sometimes difficult to get across is the long-term value of natural – some homeowners struggle to visualise the finished result so tend to buy only on price. “With our new display area we are able to not only show off our great products but also help landscapers and homeowners see the true beauty of natural stone. It’s an exciting time to be involved in the industry as new contemporary products are produced and the prices are still great for every homeowner to afford a bit of class for the garden.” www.miles-stone.co.uk
