 What
about
foreknowledge?

We grant that there is a "kind of election" that is held by many believers today. Broadly speaking this is based on Romans 8.29: "For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate, etc." The case runs something like this: God foresaw those who were going to accept Christ, and therefore He "elected" them to eternal life.

 Co ncl usi o n:

Because of our total depravity it is impossible for us to save ourselves. (John 6:44,65) Therefore, God, in His infinite mercy, chose or elected certain individuals unto salvation. He chose them before time, according to His sovereign will. (Ephesians 1:4-6; 2 Thessalonians 2:13; 2 Timothy 1:9) God elected some to receive mercy in order that He may be glorified. (Romans 9:23) He did not choose believers because he foresaw that they would choose Him, rather, He chose them according to His good pleasure. (Romans 8:28-30) He also chose to pass over others and let their hearts remain hardened due to their sin. (Romans 9:17-18; Roman 11:7-8) God did not choose all men, nor did he choose Satan and his demons. The angels were chosen by God. (1 Timothy 5:21) When a person is saved, he then has the privilege of knowing he is one of the elect. (2 Peter 1:10) Man can do nothing to affect God's choice. (Romans 9:16)
