The most vital organ houses the Soul.
The Bible speaks frequently of “The Heart”, in fact it speaks of it over 800 times in the OT alone. But what is “The Heart”? Is it simply an organ that pumps blood? Or is there more to the centerpiece of our body?
What is the Heart? The Heart is at the center of the person according to the Bible, it isn’t just an organ that produces feelings or inclinations, rather it is usually represents the essence of a person. From it our actions, passions, thoughts all spring forth. “As the eyes see, the ears hear, the heart is meant to discern and prompt action.” Bruce Waltke Examples is the OT: Gen 45:26 Gen. 8:21 Duet. 30:17 Prov. 4:23 Prov. 27:19
Examples in the NT: Mathew 6:21 Mathew 12:34 Romans 10:8-10 James 1:26
What is in our heart? We are usually encouraged to “follow our hearts”, but is that wise? We see that the Bible says our hearts are full of deceit and sin, and before we come to faith we are prone to do nothing but sin.
Exodus 7:14 Jeremiah 17:9 Romans 3:10 Ephesians 4:18-20
Think of “The Ring of Power” in Lord of the Rings.
A New Heart? Proverbs 20:9 Ezekiel 36:26-28 We are not the ones that make ourselves good enough to receive a new heart, rather God alone is the one who works in us to give us a new heart wanting to obey.
Go Upstream! When we consider our lives and the actions we commit, we simply deal with and address the issues “downstream” never really getting “upstream” to the Spring which produces our desires. Only addressing Behavior in your life leads 2 ways: Pride – I have made it this far, so am good enough to do this on my own Despair – I am constantly failing I guess I am not strong enough, I am overcome. Proverbs 4:23! So many times we try and just address the sinful actions without considering the cause of them. If we find out selves struggling with sin, we need not simply exercise more will power, but pray for the Holy Spirit to cleanse our “Spring” renew our heart and renew our desires. (Romans 6:17 8:13)
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise” (Psalms 51:17 ESVS)
