LUCAS BENARROCH ANEZKA SEBEK | THESIS 1 GREETINGS FROM THE FUTURE lucasbenarroch.wordpress.com
Megaintoite is a super heroine whose mission is to prevent the approaching apocalyptic future. She operates in New York City while maintaining a civilian identity. Megaintoite is a shapeshifter, she has the ability to modify her gear depending on the situation. Her audio recorders and video cameras are essential tools in providing her all the necessary information. She also wears an utility belt with all the necessary tools to accomplish specific tasks. The reason behind the creation of Megaintoite is to critique the artificial second identity as she is portrayed in the street and in virtual space. But also, to critique the wild environment in which we live, where climate change and zombies dominate. Throughout the development of Megaintoite's character, I will demonstrate that arts are the whole reason why we are alive. In fact, she has the ability to change people's perception to interpret life, and be into it. In the next stage of development, I will create a few scenes in which the audience meets her in action.
Communication (exposure) and design (creativity) are essential in this project in which traditional media (TV and radio) is accompanied by social networks and "vandalism". The scope of my thesis is to communicate, interact and enlighten the people by displaying material virtually and physically in the form of a Superheroine.
Carlos, a forty five year old superhero enthusiast, comes into the thesis space with Theo, his 2
thirteen year old son and Caroline, his twenty year old daughter. “Finally I see more of that! Hold on is it…? Is that the woman that…? Is that the smell…? Yes! Megaintoite! Look at her costume! and her weapon! It is all here” (Theo). Dad is playing the animation again and again. He does not understand the relationship between the Superheroine and the futuristic sounds and geometric imagery that he is interacting with. Caroline focuses on the videos of Megaintoite’s propaganda. She also notices real-time surveillance-camera footage being played inside a sort of sculpture. Everything seems to be linked, a new superheroine has arrived. Here are the proves and images of Megaintoite in action.“Dad what’s next?” (Theo). Caroline is already in her Iphone showing Megaintoite’s facebook, twitter, youtube (and any other post or social network in which Megaintoite has been mentioned) to her family. They want to see more.
I believe the whole family will demand to see Super villains and the rest of GFTF team since each member of the family has a different reason to feel connected with the project. Carlos is into the digital graphics (animation and video) of the project, Theo is into the gadgets (weapons and costume) and Caroline is into the social networking (online profiles and blogging). They are all into the urban aspect of the project just by being in New York City.
I got very inspired by DC comics that just released "the new fifty-two". They launched a historic renumbering of the entire DC Universe line of comic books with 52 first issues. They adapted their abilities, skills and powers to better respond to the twenty-first century life which is also key in Megaintoite's mission. The French photographer Georges Rousse and his 3
personal " trompe l'oiel" really influenced me because of the unique approach that shiftsthe relationship of painting to space. Banksy, because of his ironic cultural, social and political messages and the Egyptian youth that feels the need of the positive changes and wants to be able to express themselves freely, both in mainstream media and online, are very inspiring to me too. Collectively, all these things have motivated me to create an interactive series of super elements that point to a specific entity, a Superheroine, for which mentors are the witnesses of the urban and digital interventions.
In effect, in this project, I will be using graphic design (from the logo to the inscriptions in her costume), animation (to present her and her actions, as well as other digital pieces such as the animated shapeshifter logo), viral communication techniques (blogging and video blogging) and street campaign techniques (graffiti, stenciling, pasting) to fully develop this Superheroine.
My next steps will be to perfect the graphics and storyboard scenes (october 23rd). Then I will finalize her characteristics in order to design her costume and weapons(November 3rd). Then I will start the logo animations (which should be very advanced by November 15th) and I will be posting them while pasting more posters in the street, and recording it. Then I will start figuring out how to present all these pieces together in a space and lastly I will be editing, taking care of details, creating profiles and making sure that I have an impressive prototype, a good taste of the project (November 22nd). I believe on having a coherent and exciting proposal that outlines what I intend to make by December 15th. 4
I am pleasing myself by doing what I know how to do. I am pleasing the public buy offering a simple, classic idea to believe and get involved with. My demographic is people between 13 and 40 who like comics and superheroes, as well as designers and urban artists. The background knowledge is provided by the fact that superheroes have always been around. I believe that I am learning about communication design by provoking desire, motivate, attract and inspire the public to respond to my messages. Their responses to my project will allow me to see if it worked. I think it would be nice to research about daily situations that a character such as Megaintoite could solve.
Through further investigation in research I will be able to make better sense of my thesis matter, as I attempt to perform all my abilities in a theme that I continue to develop. I plan to spend the year working on this project since it will be a superheroic process linked to real people . I will answer to my thesis dilemma by showing that the problems of modern life are a reality, that everything is in front of you, either physically and/or digitally and that we should make an extra effort to solve them. If my thesis is successful, the name Megaintoite will be recognizable to those who support her mission, in turn, her supporters would want her to continue to live out her mission as a member of the GFTF team. I will know by then if it is a good idea to do the whole team or even a movie. The best research sources that I have found are a blog about fashionable technology and performance http://ft.parsons.edu/performance/? page_id=12) and the new 52! by DCcomics (http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/the-new-52/). Visiting art, design and installation exhibits, as well as standing in the street and see people's behaviors help me to improve the scope of this project and I will contact all the necessary 5
people to make it more interesting.
MIND MAP GREETINGS FROM THE FUTURE
ART AND DESIGN
Apocalyptic Future: Consequence of the wild environment in which we live, where climate change and zombies dominate. Exposure: Appearance in public or in the mass media. Revelation. Extra Effort: Free action and can be performed at any time. Heroes are sometimes called upon to perform feats beyond even their amazing abilities, this calls for extra effort. Humans and Superheroes can use extra effort simply by declaring they are doing so. Scavenger Hunt: Game in which the organizers prepare a list defining specific items, in which the participants seek to gather all items on the list or perform tasks, as specified. The goal is usually to be the first to complete the list, although in a variation on the game players can also be challenged to complete the tasks on the list in the most creative manner. Some scavenger hunts are held online, where players have to find particular information on the web. Shapeshifter: Ability to modify your gear depending on the situation. Superhero: A superhero is a character dedicated to protect the public. ‘Greetings from the future’ will explore new media using the most recent communication tools to protect the public. By definition, characters strictly require actual superhuman powers to be deemed superheroes. However, this term can be applied to characters who perform the same functions but are devoid of such powers and abilities who are alternately referred to as costumed crime fighters Utility belt: Common piece of equipment for crime fighters and espionage. A collection of useful tools and equipment in a compact carrying case. Vandalism: Free advertising, usually performed in the street. 8
