A Message from the Superintendent
Dear Lawrence Faculty & Community Members, The last two months have been extremely difficult as a result of COVID-19. The virus has completely closed our schools. However, I have witnessed first-hand the power of our community supporting our students and faculty. I want to personally thank everyone who has volunteered to support our students with resources and food. The special recognition of our staff with notes, banners, and words of thanks are so appreciated. Our schools may be closed, but our people are still connected. The sound of children in schools is special. The schools will continue to grow the future for our community. Now we must prepare for the future when we return to school. With state guidance, the administration is preparing a plan to re-open our Follow Dr. Smith on Twitter buildings. It is my hope that we will begin opening our schools and resume our school services after July 4. Please stay connected to our district communications, as we will be updating you on plans to return. First, we must celebrate the close of the 2019-2020 school year! Hats off to the Class of 2020. These seniors have demonstrated courage and dedication under the most challenging of circumstances. Collectively, they were awarded over $38M in college scholarships. Beyond the Class of 2020, we celebrate a state champion girls basketball team (LN), a state finalist combined marching band, national merit scholars, Lilly Scholars, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Side-by-Side musicians, Mr. Basketball runners up, three newly STEM certified schools, Civil Air Patrol Educator of the Year, Mr. Frank Merrill (MCIT), Indiana Foreign Language Teacher of the Year, Ms. Mabel Ramos‌ the list goes on and on. Our students and staff continue to excel at a local, state, and national level. We have so much to be proud of in the MSD of Lawrence Township. Sincerely,
Dr. Shawn A. Smith, Superintendent of Schools

Lawrence Central and Lawrence North High School Graduation Based on mandates in place by Governor Holcomb and Mayor Hogsett, and in the interest of public safety, it is not feasible to hold the traditional ceremonies originally planned (Lawrence North on June 2nd and Lawrence North on June 3rd) at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a virtual graduation experience in its place. Diplomas will be officially awarded at this time and will be available for pick up in July. The virtual graduation will include dignitary speeches, reading of student names, and a collage of pictures. Assuming it is deemed safe, it is the intent of the district to hold an in-person ceremony in July. Lawrence Central will hold an in-person event on July 30 at 8 PM on the football field. The rain date is July 31. Lawrence North will hold an in-person event on July 28 at 8 PM on the football field. The rain date is July 29. Links to the virtual ceremonies will be available via an announcement on the district and high school homepages once the videos are finalized. They will also be communicated by principals and shared on social media.

Congratulations to our three new STEM certified schools! STEM Certified schools were first selected by the Indiana Department of Education in 2015. Schools are selected based on their commitment to teaching STEM disciplines throughout the entire school. STEM Certified schools exemplify a highly non-traditional approach to education, employing a great deal of inquiry, project-based learning, community engagement, entrepreneurship, student-centered classrooms, integration into humanities and related arts, and out-of-school STEM activities. STEM Certified schools take this approach while following educational policies set by the state and excelling under the system of accountability. Prior to certification, each school completed a rigorous application and review process. Our three newly certified schools are Crestview Elementary, Forest Glen Elementary, and Oaklandon Elementary!
