A Message from the Superintendent
Dear Lawrence Faculty & Community Members, 2020 is here and with it comes exciting changes that are sure to further advance our school district. In the past three months, we have accomplished much as a corporation. On November 5, 2019, we successfully passed the districtâ€™s first capital referendum, totaling $191M, and ensuring high quality learning environments for our students for years to come. Oaklandon Elementary In the past few weeks, we have received final approval from the City of Indianapolis and City of Lawrence for our new Transportation Facility. Additional information and renderings will be shared as they become available. Our current facility was built in 1992 and intended to house and maintain 90 school buses. There are currently over 220 buses housed on that site. We are proud to share that our 2018-2019 Annual Report is now available. Follow this link to view the report in its entirety. It is important that we all continue to be advocates for public education. Part of that advocacy means being equipped with information to inform the public as to the current challenges that public schools face. This semester I will be visiting every school building and meeting with various community groups to educate stakeholders on how public schools are funded in Indiana.

Lawrence North Boys Varsity Basketball are 2020 Marion County Champions On Saturday, January 18, Lawrence Central played Lawrence North in the Marion County Championship. This was the first time in program history that the two schools met in the title game. Lawrence North beat Lawrence Central 51-46. This is the their first county title since 2008 and Coach Jack Keeferâ€™s 9th County Title. Read more about the championship game here.
Lawrence North Girls Varsity Basketball are 2020 MIC Champs Lawrence North Girls Varsity Basketball secured the 2020 Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference (MIC) Champion title with a win over Lawrence Central combined with a North Central win over Center Grove. Great job, ladies!
Lawrence North Strength Coach Surprised by Colts with a trip to the 2020 Super Bowl Representatives from the NFL, including Colts wide receiver, Zach Pascal, surprised Lawrence North High School Strength Coach, Carol Happ, on December 2nd with an all-expense paid trip for two to the 2020 Super Bowl. Despite several bouts with cancer, Coach Happ continues to always put her students first.
Lawrence North Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Recipients Two of the nine Central Indiana Community Foundation 2020 Lilly Scholars are from Lawrence North High School! Congratulations to Yahiry Xique & Zaheen Rashed! Recipients of this prestigious scholarship receive up to four years of full tuition to attend any accredited public or private not-for-profit college or university in Indiana. Important Second Semester Dates There is no school on Monday, February 17 in observance of President’s Day. Students will participate in a remote eLearning Day on Friday, February 14, 2020. March 27 is a designated snow make up day, if needed. Spring Break is March 30 through April 3. The first day of school after Spring Break is April 6. Indiana Department of Education presents community presentations on youth vaping across the state The Indiana Department of Education, in collaboration with the Indiana State Department of Health, present a learning opportunity for Hoosiers to engage and discuss the impact of vaping within their community. We are excited to be able to offer this training regionally and look forward to a great discussion on this very important topic. This presentation will provide data related to youth vaping; address vaping devices; discussion on model policy for schools to combat vape use on campus; education and community resources through the Vape-Free Indiana Website; and, completion of enrollment for Catch My Breath curriculum. Profiles of Excellence & Staff Recognition Michael Shreves, Chief Financial Officer, LT Schools Chief Financial Officer, Michael Shreves, was a top honoree for 2019 Indianapolis Business Journal CFO of the Year Award. Under Shreves’ leadership, the district was able to raise teacher pay while at the same time increasing its rainy day fund 10% and reducing its spending on contract services 20%. The district maintains a minimum cash balance of $15 million. Click here to read more in the IBJ.
K9 Axel Retires On January 21, 2020, Officer Matt Hickey of the Lawrence Police Department formally announced the retirement of K9 Axel. After serving two tours of duty in Afghanistan, Axel, a Medal of Valor recipient, was acquired through a grant to LT Schools to serve as a resource narcotics detection dog in our schools and the community. Hickey said of Axel, “Axel, four paws and a nose, served his community with pride!” Click here to watch the YouTube video and lean more about Axel.
Mrs. LaNesha Tabb—Early Learning Center at Mary Castle Ms. LaNesha Tabb is a lead learner at The Early Learning Center at Mary Castle. In her role as a Kindergarten teacher she not only delivers engaging and rigorous lessons to her students each day but she also has contributed to the district in a variety of ways. For example, as a member of of our Rigor Leadership team, the K-2 Curriculum Team, the Early Literacy Team she has opened up her classroom as a place where teachers can grow, and learn together about best practices in our field. Because of all of this and more she was ELCMC's 2019 Teacher of the Year!
MCIT Studio 75 students are Eyes on Cancer Certified MCIT Studio 75 Cosmetology seniors have all earned certification from Eyes on Cancer. The course gave the students the knowledge they need to detect suspicious skin lesion that could be cancerous. If students were to detect something unusual they would: Ask the client if they are aware of the skin lesion? Ask the client how long the skin lesion has been there? Ask the client if a doctor has seen it before? Offer to take a picture of it with the customer's cell phone Click here to view the RTV6 story on their certification.
Lawrence Live! In this edition of Lawrence Live, Dr. Smith introduces us to the Indiana State Champion 1024 Robotics Team. Listen in and learn about what's involved in building a robot and participating in the highest level of competition. February 14 eLearning Day Friday, February 14 will be an eLearning Day for students due to the Teacher Action Day on November 19. Classes will not be in session but students will complete assignments independently online. Accommodations will be made for students who do not have an internet connection. National School Counseling Week 2020 The week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), highlights the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and the tremendous impact they can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. Blue Ribbon Facilities Plan Work continues on our Blue Ribbon Facilities Plan!* Renovations are well underway at Amy Beverland and Sunnyside Elementary Schools. Other projects for 2020 include the Transportation Facility and Multi-Purpose Athletic/Physical Education/Performing Arts Track & Field Upgrades. * These projects are outside of the scope of the referendum funding.

Lawrence Central home to two 2020 McDonald’s All-American nominees Congratulations to DeAndre Davis and Nijel Pack. Both were nominees for the 2020 McDonald’s All-American Games to be played on April 1st in Houston. The final roster was set on ESPN on January 23, 2020. Coach Jack Keefer celebrates 800 Career Wins On December 17, Lawrence North High School Varsity Boys Basketball Coach, Jack Keefer celebrated his 800th career win after a 100-38 over Manual High School. Only two other coaches in Indiana history have won as many games.
Fall Creek Valley 8th Grade Boys are the Marion County Champions This is the 8th grade team’s fourth consecutive championship!
MSD of Lawrence Township featured by Geist Current for dual language programming The MSD of Lawrence Township is well known for its success in language immersion and is home to the longest-standing dual language program in the state with Forest Glen Elementary. Congratulations to MCIT Civil Air Patrol The Titan Cadet Squadron Cyber Patriot team from McKenzie Center for Innovation & Technology earned a First Place award in the All-Service division for the state of Indiana during the recently completed national competition. Civil Air Patrol is run by Lieutenant Colonel, Frank E. Merrill, recently recognized by Great Lakes Region as the recipient of the Major General Jeanne Holm Aerospace Education Officer of the Year.
