ISTM EVENT GUIDE 2014

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to ISTM On behalf of Reed Travel Exhibitions, I would like to welcome you all to this, the inaugural edition of International Ski Travel Market (ISTM). I would like to thank our hosts and event partners for their tremendous support including the A-ROSA Resort Kitzbühel, Tirol Tourist Board, Kitzbühel Tourism, Four Seasons Travel and Heaven Publicity. Their support and guidance has helped us deliver a successful ISTM in the heart of the Tirolean mountains, the perfect setting for a ski travel trade event in a resort renowned for first class skiing and unrivalled hospitality. We’re delighted to welcome 60 ski travel suppliers from across 11 countries, with a notable presence from the host destination Austria as well as a strong representation from other wellknown European ski destinations including Switzerland, France and Italy together with resorts from North America highlighting ISTM as a truly international event. As a meetings style event, ISTM offers a level playing field for all suppliers. With 60 buyers attending from 20 countries, ranging from independent ski tour operators to the ski company heavyweights, the scene is set for a productive 2 days of meetings and networking. Each morning will start with a forum session comprising a panel of industry experts debating and addressing topical issues surrounding the ski tourism sector, including Monday’s session on ‘The Future of the Mountains’ and Tuesday’s session on ‘Market Growth and Resort Development - North America v Europe’ highlighting the differences in the North American and European approach. Both days promise to be a fascinating mix of stimulating debate, new ideas and, of course, prime networking opportunities between the resorts, inbound ski travel suppliers and leading outbound ski tour operators. On a more social note, I’d like to invite you all to join us on Monday evening for the ISTM Welcome Reception in the Streif Restaurant, here at the A-Rosa for a Tirolean themed evening, with music and local gastronomic specialities. Finally on behalf of the ISTM event team, I would like to thank you for your support of the first ever International Ski Travel Market and wish you a productive and very enjoyable event. New ski safaris launched Dolomite Mountains Ltd has launched its winter 2013/14 programme with a new range of ski safaris. Ski Safaris in the Dolomites encompass the Dolomiti Superski region, linking 12 different resorts featuring 1,200 km of pistes taking from four to ten days. Different from classic resort skiing, ski safaris encourage skiers to ski from valley to valley in the day and enjoy the hospitality of a rifugio (alpine inn) in the evening. Here guests savour cuisines and cultures unique to each valley region. The programme began last winter with two itineraries; the trips this winter expand to six new routes, including a gourmet-focused trip featuring meals from Michelinstarred chefs in the huts and a family-friendly option. “Ski Safaris are quite unlike any ski holiday you have had before,” said Agustina Lagos-Marmol, founder of Dolomite Mountains Ltd. She continued: “Ski the famous Dolomite mountains, stay in different mountain rifugios (huts) every night, and enjoy lift access to hundreds of miles of prepared terrain. You may never ski the same run twice!” Tailor-made and group trips, guided or self-guided are available between mid-December and mid-April. www.dolomitemountains.com

A round-up of the latest resort, destination and equipment news from the world of winter sports Equipment

Renting’s best

Experienced skiers throughout the world are increasingly seeing renting as an opportunity to use the latest skis – chosen for that day’s snow conditions – all while avoiding airline baggage fees. Just as geography and snowfall can challenge skiers, so too can staying on top of the latest innovations. As a result, some skiers are beginning to think that it’s more convenient – and even more cost effective – to rent than it is invest in purchasing a pair of skis and having to pay to transport them. Overall, about 20 per cent of those who skied three or more times in 2012 rented at least once, according to the SnowSports Industries America trade group. In order to stay current, many ski shops upgrade their rental equipment on a regular basis, meaning that renters can borrow the latest in technological innovations. And, as competition heats up among ski equipment retailers, skiers are getting more services. Some shops allow online reservations or provide a free shuttle to their store, while others will bring an assortment of gear to your hotel for you to try. Renting also has the advantage of onsite maintenance should you damage the ski in any way. Ski boots, however, are proving the exception to the rule with many people preferring to bring their own with them on holiday, citing comfort levels as the deciding factor.

JAPAN

MONSTER attraction The winter weather has brought the “ice monsters” out in full force in Japan’s Zao Onsen ski resort. The area is famous for its ice monsters – tall evergreen trees covered in rime. The creature-like shapes are made up of ice deposits on the trees that form from water droplets and, this season, the severe cold weather caused the soft rimes to develop larger than usual, creating a tourism attraction.

EQUIPMENT

SAFETY FIRST

The importance of taking appropriate safety measures when skiing has been highlighted as a result of recent high-profile skiing accidents. UK celebrity TV skiing game show ‘The Jump’ has come under scrutiny after it was reported that contestants were practising on an artificial ski slope without helmets. The television show is a reminder of the potential hazards associated with winter sports. Suffering a series of bumps and a broken hand, Sir Steve Redgrave pulled out of the programme due to injury, following Henry Conway, who broke a bone in his hand, and Melinda Messenger who suffered concussion. The programme aired just weeks after Michael Schumacher’s accident in Méribel, France, where he fell and injured his head. Schumacher was wearing a ski helmet when he was badly injured at the French Alpine resort in December. The helmet is reported to have broken in two on impact, but was credited with saving his life. At the time of writing he remains in an induced coma with no update on his condition. Since the accident, retailers have seen a leap in the purchase of ski helmets, with one store claiming to have witnessed a 400 per cent spike in sales. The use of ski helmets is compulsory in a number of North American ski resorts and is increasingly required by travel insurers. “While not mandatory in Europe we’ve seen the growing use of helmets by skiers in recent years,” says Tim Prifti, who heads up the accident & health division at Lloyd’s managing agent Kiln. “At the moment Michael Schumacher will be on everybody’s minds. It would appear he wasn’t doing

anything high-risk. Sometimes it’s just bad luck. “Skiing is a sport often associated with high adrenalin but accidents can occur at any speed, and the one I would flag there is the tragic fatal accident that occurred to Natasha Richardson who was just skiing on a nursery slope at the time,” he concludes. Statistics suggest that on average 89 per cent of children wear helmets on the slopes (jumping to 91 per cent for children under the age of nine), compared to 72 per cent of adults, according to insurer Essential Travel. There has been a 15 per cent increase in their use since Natasha Richardson’s death at a Canadian ski resort in 2009. Worryingly, the use of helmets for 18 to 24-yearolds is just 53 per cent. Of all accidents on the slopes, 22 per cent involve a head injury. Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) recently conducted a series of impact tests simulating a collision between a skier and a tree. It was the first scientific use of crash test dummies of this kind in the UK. In some tests the dummy wore a standard skiing helmet and in others only a woolly hat. The research showed that even at relatively low speeds of 10 and 20kph a collision without a helmet could prove fatal. “In the 20kph tests the skier without the helmet actually experienced a force equivalent to a 1.9 tonne car being suspended from their head when they collided with a tree,” said Tom Bishop, head of travel insurance at Direct Line, the company that commissioned the research. “The skier with the helmet had a force that was something like four times less than that.”

Bulgarian resorts proving popular Branimir Botev, Bulgaria’s deputy minister in charge of tourism, has claimed that Bulgarian ski resorts could treble their number of annual visitors. Botev suggested that winter resorts were currently visited by around 600,000 tourists a year, but that the number could reach over two million when their full potential was reached. “We have three ski resorts which have won international acclaim. Bansko, Pamporovo and Borovets all welcome both professionals and fans of ski sports – but so do Chepelare, Vitosha, Kom and Beklemeto,” Botev said during the presentation of Bulgaria at the East Mediterranean International Travel & Tourism Exhibition (EMITT) 2014 in Istanbul at the end of January. Botev went on to say that Bulgaria had been visited by 354,257 Turkish tourists in the period January-November 2013, up by nearly 31% from the same period of 2012, adding that in 2013 Turkey had been the sixth biggest market for Bulgaria’s tourist product. He said that the best opportunities for attracting more Turkish tourists were vacations including winter sports and combined spa packages. Meanwhile Georgi Ikonomov, mayor of Bansko, declared that Bulgaria had unique opportunities to develop active ski tourism, including five high mountains located near one another, which were no more than 2 hours away from an international airport, and a total of 146 mountain peaks of over 2,000 metres. During the visit, Botev met with Ziya Taskent, Senior Vice President Marketing & Sales for Turkish Airlines and the two parties agreed to work for the launch of a regular flight between Istanbul and Varna.

North Korean resort opens to the public A US-based tour organisation is launching ski packages to North Korea. North Korea opened its first ski resort to the public in January, and Uri Tours has now launched five- and seven-day ski holidays to the Masik Pass Skiing Grounds. So far, the tour operator has received bookings from six Americans, who will be among the first foreigners to hit the North Korean slopes this winter. A one-day lift pass is 25 euros (included in the

14

package), and the total length of the resorts nine slopes is 110,000 metres, while getting to the top of the Masik Pass at 1,360 m (4,461 feet) requires taking three separate chair lifts and takes up to 40 minutes. Currently one hotel is open for business with 120 rooms, while the resort itself – which was the brain-child of the country’s current leader Kim Jong Un – offers a lap pool, fitness centre, massage, sauna and a hair salon.

Scottish ski resorts report snowfall increase Ski resorts in Scotland have received an increase in snowfall, which has provided a massive boost to their winter season. Conditions in the Scottish mountains are comparing favourably with many in Europe, Scandinavia, the US and even Canada.

At Glencoe Mountain Resort, Nevis Range and CairnGorm Mountain it has been snowing almost continuously since December. Staff at Glencoe reported more snow than they’ve seen for at least 15 years.

USA

US SNOWFALL NOT ENOUGH

A fresh blanket of snow is bringing skiers and snowboarders back to America’s Sierra Nevada ski resorts after a slow start to the season. However, resort operators said that more snow is still needed before they can swing into full operation. On Lake Tahoe’s south shore, 15 more trails opened at Heavenly Mountain Resort after the welcome storm dropped up to two feet of snow there. To the north of Tahoe, Squaw Valley opened four more lifts after the storm left up to 10 inches of snow there. Half of its 30 lifts and 32 of its 170 runs now are open. Resort officials put a positive spin on the snowpack, noting that February and March are usually the most important months for snowfall, but the second snow survey of the winter found water content throughout California to be at just 12% of average for this time of year. Not only was 2013 the driest calendar year on records going back to 1895, but forecasters say this January may go into the books as the driest ever.

EUROPEAN SKI INDUSTRY

ISTM EVENT GUIDE 2014

Slippery slope? A new strategy may be required for ski travel agents – even a paradigm shift – if they are to prevent the generation gap blowing a hole in the industry for years to come.

E

urope’s economy is generally looking up. Skiers are returning to the slopes after a painful hiatus. Everything’s looking rosy again. But who wouldn’t want a crystal ball right now? According to recent research by the Ski Club of Great Britain, the vast majority of the 2012/13 season’s skiers were planning to be back on the slopes again this season. The research found that 95 per cent were aiming to return, with over 80 per cent of the previous season’s holidaymakers also planning to ski again, along with almost 60 per cent of those who last skied in the 2010/11 season. It would seem that, as the green shoots of economic recovery appear around Europe, so the slopes are set to see some long-awaited growth. This is also borne out by the Ski Club’s research, which found that over 90 per cent of those questioned plan to ski either the same amount or more over the next five years. The elephant in the room is the fact that skiing holidays are still being taken almost exclusively by skiers. Obviously, you might say, but this is the root of one of the biggest problems facing the industry – attracting new skiers to the slopes in significant numbers. Almost half of the skiers who responded to the Ski Club’s survey have 20 or more weeks’ skiing experience. Moreover, just 14 per cent of current skiers have

16

four or less weeks on the piste. Clearly, most of today’s skiers like to ski – quite a lot – and can afford to take to the slopes relatively frequently. Few would argue with the general assumption that people who ski have a high disposable income. And, while we’re making assumptions, let’s assume that agents will tailor their marketing strategies to compete for these well-heeled skiers who know what they want from a skiing break – and can afford to be choosy. Add to this the fact that getting non-skiers to the

slopes is unquestionably a tough nut to crack and it only heightens the argument for targeting this largely middleclass demographic. It’s a strategy that is likely to work well in the short- to medium-term, but will do little to grow the pool from which potential future clients can be drawn. With skiers returning and financial belts being loosened – a little – the time seems right to attack this

problem and put a cohesive strategy in place to attract new skiers. To this end, the Ski Club’s research does reveal some positive figures. Around 8,000 non-skiers responded to the survey, revealing that an intriguing number – around four per cent – were ‘highly likely to go skiing in the next three years’. The research drilled down into the non-skier responses and discovered that: “More of the people with a positive intent to ski were female rather than male. And more of them were from younger age groups than are currently in the market. Over 50 per cent were under 40

The next question – perhaps the 64-thousanddollar question – is how to persuade them to take the plunge, so to speak. Elisabeth Bernroithner, Head of Sales at Eurotours International in Kitzbühel, believes it is necessary to “…market ski packages at an affordable price in order to dispel the myth that skiing is just a sport for the elite.” She continues: “In many places skiing often has the image of being a luxury sport, which means that many potential skiers assume it is also very expensive. It is therefore important to offer a

18

selection of very reasonably priced packages for beginners, in order to overcome these inhibitions. “It would also be true to say that many beginners, or people thinking about returning to skiing, do not necessarily want to book a full week’s course in order to decide whether skiing is something they would like to continue further. In this case it would make sense to offer shorter courses for beginners which could be extended if necessary, without incurring considerable additional expense. This however means that the ski schools need to be more flexible.” Elisabeth concludes that: “We need to find ways of convincing people that skiing is a sport which everyone can afford and that nobody need to be afraid of giving it a go.” The problem is that skiing is NOT affordable for all. How can it be? To attract the bread-andbutter ski lovers that resorts currently rely on – the ‘experienced (or choosy) skiers’ – the slopes must be manicured yet diverse, equipment and safety standards must be second to none, and accommodation and leisure facilities of the highest order.

EUROPEAN SKI INDUSTRY

ISTM EVENT GUIDE 2014

None of that comes cheap. Even beyond the confines of the resort, roads need to be kept clear, to ensure safety and accessibility. It will likely be messages other than ‘ski on a budget’ that will pull in the next generation of current non-skiers: messages such as the warm welcome that awaits you at today’s resorts; a clear message that no everyone is an expert and you, the ‘newbie’, will be either a laughing stock or worse, the one holding everyone else up. The 2008 book Sport And Tourism – a collection of detailed reports from North American sports tourism experts – pointed out that non-skiers often feel resorts are ‘haunts for the young and expert skiers’. Although research has shown that this is not the case, an image problem (or perhaps a problem with the way the ski industry promotes itself) was clearly being highlighted. The book went on to suggest that, if those allimportant ‘new’ skiers are to be attracted to the slopes, carefully managed promotional opportunities should be sought, such as ‘good news’ stories… ‘the oldest new skier of the season’… ‘celebrity learning to ski’ events… Offering ski facilities to charitable organisations that don’t traditionally have a skiing link is another suggestion, along with finding volunteer speakers to spread the word about great opportunities for beginners. Further to this, a recent report from European Consumer Centers’ Network points out that the

20

advent of carving skis is helping to grow the sport – convincing reluctant skiers to give it a try, and getting novices out onto runs more quickly. Thomson is one of a number of companies shifting its focus towards less experienced skiers – promoting its ‘hand-picked’ resorts with gentle slopes, excellent tuition and a relaxed atmosphere for those starting out on their skiing journey. The site highlights resorts with beginners’ and family packages, large numbers of nursery slopes or easy and intermediate runs, and varied non-skiing activities. Of course, Europe’s pistes are likely to see more skiers this season than last – and next season there will probably be more again. While cash registers are ringing throughout Europe’s resorts, it may be difficult to make the case for a dramatic image change. But those playing the long game will now be targeting potential first-time skiers with new approaches, including the likes of mobile technology and social media. At the 7th World Congress on Snow and Mountain Tourism, for example, the deputy mayor of Uslan in Korea and the director of the Flaine Tourism Office, were in agreement that utilising such technologies had been central to bringing new visitors to their respective regions.

ISTM EVENT GUIDE 2014

EUROPEAN SKI INDUSTRY

Of course, Europe’s pistes are likely to see more skiers this season than last – and next season there will probably be more again

“Getting new skiers into the sport is a challenge for all stakeholders and is not something that is going to be easily achieved,” says Frank McCusker, CEO of the Ski Club of Great Britain. “I think the Winter Olympics in Sochi will certainly be a catalyst,” he says, “driving awareness and excitement and the adrenaline rush, if you like, and enticing people into the sport. “At the same time, Snowsport England has developed an initiative with Sport England called GO SKI GO BOARD, encouraging new people to try winter sports. “At the Ski Club of Great Britain, we have developed a new beginners membership and our aim is to demystify the sport and encourage people to get out and enjoy the mountains. “We help beginners with information such as what are the best resorts to go to and what sort of skis should they be hiring. We have a video on what it’s like to put on a pair of boots for the first time; we basically try and make the whole experience a little bit easier for new skiers.”

There will always be holidaymakers who like the idea of skiing but have a limited budget, and many of them will opt for the sun for their one annual holiday. It may be time for the industry to acknowledge that the management time and budget spent attempting to change the minds of this group would be better spent targeting more affluent active groups, who could more easily be persuaded to give up some time and try something new.

ISTM EVENT GUIDE 2014

SKI RESORTS – EUROPE & N AMERICA

The view from the top While there are some great resorts to be found in South America, Asia and Australasia, it’s the slopes of Europe and North America that set the standard for the world’s most avid skiers. Here are just a few that have hit the headlines…

W

hen skiers are asked what it is about a ski resort that makes them want to return, they generally say guaranteed snow and lots of good runs. But if that were all there was to it, then all those bars and restaurants (which are, in fact, packed and raucous throughout the season) , would struggle to survive – and invariably they don’t. There would also be little point to the continual

improvement and upgrading of hotels and chalets – yet they seem to get better on a yearly basis. These days, it seems, a resort must have it all, from great ski schools to breathtaking scenery, from mindblowing hot chocolate to mindbending cocktails, and from the softest pillows to the hardest black runs. With these preconditions in mind, I suspect there would be few complaints about the following…

Kitzbühel, Austria

Considering the fame of this beautiful Austrian resort – renowned for hosting what’s considered to be the most difficult ski run in the world (the ‘Streif’) – good food and accommodation can be found at surprisingly reasonable prices.

What’s more, you don’t need to know lots of secret haunts for eating and drinking out, because excellent venues are to be found at every turn. The area has no fewer than nine award-winning restaurants and boasts both traditional favourites such as Golf-hotel Rasmushof at the bottom of the Streif, and rising stars such as Romantikhotel Tennerhof and our very own Hotel A-Rosa, with its ‘culinary round-the-world trip’. The town of Kitzbühel, with its beautiful medieval centre, sits in a valley with a large ski area to the

south-west and a smaller one to the east. Although its relatively low altitude means snow is far from guaranteed, the pistes are beautifully maintained and offer great variety for all but the most expert of skiers. With this in mind, visitors to Kitzbühel can also make use of the excellent-value AllStarCard lift pass, which offers access to seven ski areas in the region – and enough pistes and lifts to keep the most adventurous skiers happy.

ISTM EVENT GUIDE 2014

Zermatt, Switzerland

Another snow-sure resort, due to its altitude and a large glacier, Zermatt offers plenty to skiers of all abilities – but at a price.

It’s certainly at the pricier end of the Alpine spectrum, but is a truly magical place to stay and to ski. The views here are spectacular, with the Matterhorn looming to the south-west, but Zermatt itself will charm equally, with its traditional Swiss architecture and rustic atmosphere. The local ski area is expansive, with four main parts: Sunnegga, Gornergrat, Klein Matterhorn and Schwarzsee. You will also have the opportunity to purchase an international pass and visit the Italian ski resort of Cervinia. Although all skill levels are catered for, Zermatt is ideal for those who enjoy skiing at a leisurely pace, along wide rolling pistes, while enjoying the breathtaking scenery. With more than 120 hotels in the resort, as well as many excellent chalets, there is something for everyone here, from backpackerstyle accommodation (such as the Matterhorn Hosetl) to the stunning deer-themed Cervo, which boasts five-room chalets with their own sauna, steam room and hot tub.

SKI RESORTS – EUROPE & N AMERICA

Whistler, Canada

The envy of almost every other ski resort in the world, Whistler has it all, from excellent skiing opportunities for all abilities, incredible access to the slopes, with state-of-the-art lifts and equipment, an array of sports to enjoy, whether you visit in the middle of winter or the height of summer, and no shortage of great places to go to eat, drink and be merry.

This resort generally scores highest in the world for customer satisfaction. The only drawback is that it comes with a hefty price tag. Nevertheless, with two mountains – Whistler and Blackcomb – combining to create the lagest ski area in North America, and an enviable average of more than nine metres of snow a year, those who can afford it generally return year after year. The Whistler resort is extremely large and has a vibrant nightlife, with more than 100 bars and 80 restaurants, and regular live music and shows to take in. And if you haven’t bust the budget with skiing, there are also some 200 shops and boutiques to browse in. In skiing terms, no fewer than 200 trails begin just a 20-minute ride from the resort, as well as three glaciers and 12 alpine bowls.

SKI RESORTS – EUROPE & N AMERICA

ISTM EVENT GUIDE 2014

Val Thorens, France

The multi-award-winning Val Thorens is a classic purposebuilt resort and the highest in the Alps, sitting on a sunny, west-facing slope and offering excellent views, especially from the high point at Cîme de Caron.

The pleasant village cannot match the appeal of more traditional resorts, but what it lacks in chocolate-box charm, it more than makes up for in functionality, convenience and – most importantly – the virtual guarantee of snow. There’s plenty of ski-in/ski-out accommodation, and a moving carpet lift on the slope that runs through the centre of the village. There is also easy access to the lower nursery slope. The streets are technically traffic-free, but it’s not unknown for a little to build up, especially at the weekend. The Place de Caron is the beating heart of the village, with a number of shops and restaurants and a regular gathering of skiers, boarder and pedestrians. There are plenty of good hotel options, including the smart Fitz Roy, which has a good restaurant and offers guests a pool, sauna and steam room. Two more highly recommended hotels are the cosy ski-in/ski-out Sherpa and the well-positioned Val Chavière.

SKI RESORTS – EUROPE & N AMERICA

Jackson Hole, USA

Known to locals as simply Jackson, this resort, opened in 1965, has become a cult hit with American skiers. In fact, there are now two resorts accommodating Jackson’s Hole skiers, the other being the smaller Teton Village, which is much closer to the slopes. As its ranking in North America has risen, so more investment has been pumped into the place and now it boasts excellent lifts and facilities. As with most resorts in this part of the world, après-ski at Jackson is second to none – although, if animal taxidermy is not to your taste, a number of bars and restaurants should be avoided, such as the Mangy Moose (you guessed it) in Teton Village and the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, which comes complete with a stuffed grizzly bear. There is probably more at Jackson for

The town itself, founded in the 17th century as a spa town, has lost none of its traditional charm. With its cobbled streets, slate-roofed buildings (the slate came courtesy of Mont Blanc), and some of the best restaurants in the Alps, Courmayeur is popular with the great and the good in the region, and as such may not be top of the list with budget-conscious skiers. There are, in fact, three main towns that combine to form the overall resort: Courmayeur itself, on a southfacing ridge; Dolonne, which lies across the river, and Entrèves, a short distance up the valley. Each town has its own lift, taking skiers to the resort’s slopes. Although the skiing area is neither particularly large, nor particularly challenging for expert skiers (at least on the piste), the après-ski in Courmayeur is superb and beginners and intermediate skiers can have the slopes virtually to themselves, as long as they are prepared to forego lunch – because everyone stops for an extended

experienced skiers, but there is certainly no shortage for intermediates or beginners. With two mountain areas to choose from, the rule of thumb is that novices and intermediates take the Bridger Gondola to Apres Vous mountain, while experienced thrillseekers (those interested in seeing the largest vertical drop in North America, for example) head for the tram to Rendezvous mountain. The one problem with the two-village resort is that one gives easy access to the slopes, while the other wins hands-down in terms of its après-ski offering.

Courmayeur, Italy

With 14 peaks over 4,000 metres, the scenery surrounding Courmayeur is dramatic.

lunch here. Auberge de la Maison is a small but very pretty hotel in Entrèves, while Cresta et Duc, in the centre of Courmayeur offers steam, sauna and hot tub.
