Grab your shakers and win the Spirit Stick! Attention all Key Clubbers attending DCON!! This year, to help each division try to win the spirit stick, we added an extra twist. Each club is asked to bring water bottles filled with spare change to be used as noise makers. The bottles can be decorated in any manner, as creatively as you would like. The shakers will be used in the spirit stick competitions, and at the end of DCON, the change will all go to The Eliminate Project. With these shakers, you can help your division while helping a good cause! In this edition of the Jeet Street Journal, you can find information on the biggest event in the New Jersey District mentioned above, upcoming Lieutenant Governor Elections, and scholarships that reward your passion for Key Club and Community Service.

Schizophrenia

Referred to as the “cancer” of psychological disorders, schizophrenia affects an estimated 24 million people worldwide, 60% of them men. Schizophrenia literally means “split mind” and describes a split from reality that shows itself in disorganized thinking, disturbed perceptions, and inappropriate emotions and actions. Symptoms are hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia.

Volunteer Although only those with specialized levels of training can work with people suffering from schizophrenia, volunteering in a mental health clinic or homeless shelter is one way to provide outreach to those with serious mental illness. Playing games, providing books or warm meals will make conditions easier for those with schizophrenia.

March of Dimes

As a club, you can host a walk and/or run to raise awareness and research funds about schizophrenia. March of Dimes is known for their March of Babies walks held in communities all over the nation. This is a great way to not only involve your members, but the students, teachers, and citizens of your town. Any funds raised can be donated to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, which helps to raise awareness, provide treatment, and support groups for those suffering.
