Office of the Dean of Students Strategic Planning Mission The Office of the Dean of Students transforms lives by facilitating opportunities and experiences to discover, engage and learn in a diverse, inclusive and just community while promoting social responsibility.

Vision The Office of the Dean of Students engages the LSU community in a premier learning experience to achieve the highest standards of personal integrity and civic engagement for leadership in a global society.

Values As individuals and as departments (Campus Life, Disability Services, Greek Life, Student Advocacy and Accountability) within the Office of the Dean of Students, we are committed to these values as we serve each day. Office of the Dean of Students Strategic Planning Goals Discover: Foster an environment that encourages the exploration of new opportunities and experiences. Performance Indicators  Increase the percentage of students who attend programs, activities, and events by 5% each year for the next three years.  Add one program per department that educates the University community on the role of the department in providing resources to enhance student success. Strategies  Provide an array of opportunities for students to learn, lead, and get involved with the LSU community.  Refer students to appropriate and accurate resources for academic and personal assistance.  Distribute Commitment to Community documents and facilitate programs and experiences which embody those principles.

Engage: Provide quality programs, services, and opportunities in which faculty, staff and students interact with one another and the surrounding community. Performance Indicators  Increase number of first year students participating in co-curricular experiences by 5% for each year, over the next 3 years.  Increase percentage of students who engage in all co-curricular experiences by 5% for each year, over the next 3 years.  Increase the number of programmatic offerings in which academic colleagues are involved by two per year for each department. 3   


Strategies  Use best practices within each department to improve programs, activities, and experiences and analyze data within LSU’s responses for the National Survey of Student Engagement to guide decision making and goals setting.  Create a comprehensive first year student engagement plan using cocurricular experiences to involve first year students at LSU.  Create user-friendly, accessible accommodations for students with disabilities.

Learn: Create a student centered learning environment that develops engaged citizens and enlightened leaders. Performance Indicators  Articulate and measure intentional learning goals and outcomes for students who participate and facilitate our offerings.  As a result of participation in our programs and events, students will enhance their communication skills, and strengthen their knowledge of personal and social responsibility. Strategies  Strengthen students’ critical thinking, creative abilities, and communication skills through programs and initiatives that reflect best practice student learning strategies.  Develop and sustain partnerships for learning with academic colleagues and community members.  Identify and evaluate current leadership development and experiential learning opportunities within ODOS and develop appropriate, new opportunities to meet emerging needs.  Create learning outcomes for all leadership classes, trainings, and experiential learning opportunities. 4   


Diverse and Inclusive: Enhance the LSU community's understanding and appreciation of diversity and inclusion. Performance Indicators 

Increase by 5% the number of programs, activities and services designed to expand the understanding of what is diverse and inclusive.

Increase by 5% the number of educational modules and activities which expand the understanding of what is diverse and inclusive.

 Increase the number of partnerships between ODOS and other departments who work with diverse populations to offer diverse and inclusive programs, activities, and services.

Strategies  Expand the diversity of programs, messages, communication, activities to include all people, ideas, and cultures, and nurture an environment in which diversity can thrive.  Develop programs and support services that address the needs of students from a wide variety of backgrounds and that reflect and stimulate diversity of thought and encourage meaningful participation and dialog.  Expose students, faculty, and staff to various cultures - both national and international – to current issues, and perspectives.  Enhance coordination and communication within the University to ensure that the needs of a diverse student body are met through ODOS initiatives.  Provide leadership development programs and encourage participation by students from diverse backgrounds.

Social Responsibility: Promote a community of responsible, active and ethical citizens. Performance Indicators  Increase by 5% the number of programs, services, and activities which promote the understanding and ownership of the LSU Commitment to Community.  Increase by 5% the number of programs, services, and activities which expand student’s understanding of their role in a socially responsible society. 

Increase by 5% the number of programs, services, and activities which deepen the understanding of moral and ethical issues within society and encourage individuals to become part of the societal discussion.

 Lower the recidivism rate of students with accountability sanctions by 1% each year, for three consecutive years. Strategies  Build and support practices that are inclusive and indicative of the LSU Commitment to Community.  Create intentional experiences to engage students in conversations surrounding social responsibility.  Develop and implement a programmatic agenda that furthers the development of a civil and just campus community.  Maintain and expand partnerships with academic and external communities to provide stimulating experiences to shape ethical, globally-conscious citizens and leaders.

Assessment: Support the University’s commitment to continuous improvement by integrating the assessment of student learning outcomes into all department programs and services. Performance Indicators  Increase the assessment of programs/activities/events/services by 5% each year.  Utilize data available from sources including National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), Student Voice, Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership National Assessment of Student Conduct Adjudication Processes (NASCAP) and other appropriate tools to evaluate and improve the student experience.  Improve the programs/activities/events/services using the assessment data and reassessing that program the next year by 1 program/activity/event/ service per year. Strategies  Develop and assess student learning outcomes for student workers and for student officers who participate in organizations and programs.  Create and document student leadership skill development and use results for continuous improvement.  Develop student learning outcomes that explicitly connect the co-curricular experience to the education of students in a developmentally appropriate manner.  Continue to record student behaviors and use this information to evaluate and develop programs that support the education of students by enhancing their health, safety, and welfare.  Initiate a program review process through which each department is reviewed on a regular basis, utilizing new and existing data that accurately describe our students’ learning styles and needs.
