It was 4:45 a.m. and the humid Texas air already sat on your chest like a malevolent being cackling at you. The landscape seemed designed to repel human ambition — a scornful sun, snakes that will stop you dead, fauna that wants to kill you by a thousand cuts. We ignored all of it and headed out to find the blackbuck of our dreams. It helped considerably that a hot tub was waiting back at the lodge.

Sipping coffee brewed apparently in a Peterbilt engine, we stopped at the bottom of a sea of hills and waited. Our guide Will was from Mississippi, and once you could finally understand him, it was clear he didn't mince words. I discovered this when I fidgeted and he snapped, "Sit like you got some d*mn sense." Hard not to chuckle. But the man meant business.

The sun hauled itself over the cedar breaks with no urgency whatsoever, burning the dark off the hills like it resented the obligation. Will was a statue — motionless, eyes locked on the hillside with the ancient focus of a man who has forgotten more about this than I'll ever know. I fidgeted once more. He didn't have to look at me. He simply knew.

"Still," he murmured. The tone foreclosed all further discussion.

Then he locked up like he'd touched a live wire and I followed his eyes up the ridge. There was the blackbuck — jet black, brilliant white, those magnificent corkscrew horns spiraling toward heaven like he'd grown them to humiliate every other creature alive. He owned that ridge completely and knew it.

The crosshairs settled. Half a breath. The trigger broke clean.

The shot rolled across the hills and the silence that followed had genuine weight and dignity.

Will nodded once. From him, a ticker tape parade. "Good buck."

Two words. Perfect. I'd earned every bubble of that hot tub.

A TEXAS EARTHQUAKE Buck fever is real when you are 10

The early morning light had started to brighten just a bit when the mature 9-point strode into the sendero, scatting several younger bucks and does as he pushed his way to a small pile of corn.

Thick neck, big body and short-looking legs told all who saw him that he was the dominant deer on this part of the ranch.

The three of us, myself, my 10-year-old son Boone and the ranch owner, had sat in the same blind the evening before and seen several big, albeit young, bucks come through the sendero. Even though their antlers looked huge, their bodies did not have the look of mature deer. So, we just watched as they fed and chased does in and out of view. Boone enjoyed seeing so many big deer, and was calm and composed as the gun remained in the corner of the blind.

That changed when the go-ahead was given on the big 9-point. The surge of adrenaline we've all felt can overtake even experienced hunters, let alone a young hunter looking to take his first buck.

The shakes began almost immediately. Small at first, like a slight shiver on a cool night. By the time I reached for the rifle and began to slowly place it on the rest looking out of the blind in front of Boone, the entire blind had begun to shake.

Buck fever had overtaken him, and there wasn’t a whole lot we could do except smile and wait for him to calm down. By the time the blind had stopped shaking and Boone had regained his composure, the buck had exited stage left, following a doe into the brush. We stayed for another hour, and saw several bigger, younger bucks, which had no effect on the young shooter to my right.

That afternoon, after helping fill feeders and complete some ranch chores, we were back in the same blind hoping to see the mature deer once again. Which we did and had a similar repeat to the morning. A seismic event happening in and around our blind causing it to shake on its foundation, and again a mature buck exiting the sendero before we could calm down enough for a shot. Boone had been to Africa the summer before and taken multiple animals — none had caused him to shake like this big mature white-tailed buck. Buck fever is real.

We gave the blind a rest the next morning, but were back in it once again the next afternoon. A new gameplan was devised, and I told Boone if we saw the buck again, we were not going to waste any time. Get set, get ready and shoot the deer before the adrenaline had a chance to kick in.

About 4 p.m., a quick glance to my left and there he was, striding into view.

Without saying a word, I grabbed the .243, put it in the window and told Boone to get ready, just as the deer stepped into view. Boone was ready and took the shot as soon as the buck stopped broadside.

A miss? He didn’t act like he was hit. We saw dirt fly below the buck. Low? I looked at Boone and asked about the shot. “I was right on him, dad,” followed by the look of severe disappointment at the thought of a miss.

Walking up the sendero to the where the buck was standing. No blood. Heading down the trail he departed on. 50 yards. No blood. Check a different trail. Nothing.

Boone was adamant about his shot placement. Was the scope off? Now, I'm questioning myself. Then, a soft whistle from the ranch owner. I looked to see him another 50 yards down the trail we had given up on a few minutes earlier with a smile. I told Boone to keep looking, even though his excitement was quickly turning into something else at the thought the deer might be gone.

Another 25 yards and a white belly, followed by one of the biggest grins ever and raised fists.

We had survived two Texas earthquakes, and had a fine buck to show for it.

Overall, the Nomad Ti OTB measures 7.65 x 1.76 inches, making it super compact and lightweight at only 10.5 oz. It features a muzzle energy rating of 4400+ ft/lbs and is offered in black or FDE high-temp Cerakote finish. MSRP is $1,049.

It waits in the early hush over the Puszta, where the horizon feels endless and the light turns movement into a story. TIPPING POINT: A GUIDE’S GUIDE TO GRATUITIES ON OUTFITTED HUNTS

One of the most common dilemmas hunters face on an outfitted hunt has nothing to do with shot placement or wind direction. It’s simpler than that, and it makes a lot of folks squirm just the same: “How much should I tip my guide and cook?”

I’ve been in the hunting business full-time for 39 years, and tipping was a touchy subject when I started Wildlife Systems, Inc. back in 1987. It still is today, maybe more so. In the early days, I treated the whole topic like it was sacred ground, instructing our camp staff that it wasn’t to be discussed or even mentioned around clients. I skirted it entirely unless a client brought it up first. But after about 15 years of guiding as many days as perhaps anyone in the business, I stepped back from the field to focus on operations and growth, and that’s when clients started regularly asking me what an appropriate gratuity looked like. By then I’d also been on the other side of the equation, attending international hunts of my own, and I understood the quandary firsthand: hunters don’t want to insult their guide or cook, but they also don’t want to reach any deeper into their hard-earned cash than necessary and end up being the one who busts the curve.

So somewhere in years 15 through 20, I got comfortable getting out in front of the matter, and we started building tipping guidance into our hunt prep packets, brochures, and website. In recent years, I’ve become something of an advocate for our support staff, and I’ll occasionally reach out to a client directly when a gratuity has landed well short of the norm. If a guide or cook has been stiffed altogether or if the amount is well short of the norm, I want to know about it. Perhaps the client is not happy about something or maybe they simply are not familiar with the norms; either way, this provides me with an option of exploring things a bit deeper if I choose to do so.

Here are a few thoughts, in no particular order, offered straight from the hip: • Though tipping guides and cooks is a bit discretionary, it should also be abundantly clear that tipping is an industry standard.

And it’s expected, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

• Please bear in mind, regardless of their financial stature, all guides and cooks appreciate generous tips.

• Most hunters, whether they realize it or not, build a relationship with their outfitter and camp staff over the course of an outfitted hunt. So even when that relationship is a genuinely close and friendly one, guides and cooks will still wince if they feel shorted. That disappointment often rolls uphill to the proprietor, who then has to decide whether to stay quiet or address it with the client, and neither option is comfortable.

• Guides occasionally talk among themselves.

If a hunter plans on returning to that same outfit down the road, it’s worth considering the “reputation” they’ve left behind. A poor tipper gets remembered. That’s not my rule, and it’s not yours either. It’s just human nature.

Early success during the hunt, which can mean fewer hard days for the guide, should not justify a leaner tip. Maybe that guide spent days scouting on their own time and dime before you ever showed up. Maybe their skill level is exactly why the hunt came together so fast. Or maybe it was luck. Either way, there’s a fair argument that early success deserves more than a pat on the back, not less. There are two sides to that coin.

Many guides use their own gear and personal vehicles, and they carve out time away from their families to be there for your hunt.

It’s easy to say, “That goes with the territory; that’s what they signed up for,” but there’s nonetheless a lot of behind-the-scenes investment that goes into good service from both the guide and the cook. It’s not unlike a golf caddy who shows up at dawn to walk the course and read the greens before a single client ever tees off. The work that earns the tip occasionally happens before anyone’s watching.

So, the loaded question remains: “What is a fair tip?” Ask 10 different outfitters and you might get 11 different answers. But for whatever it’s worth, here are my rules of thumb: Guides: The normal range runs 8% to 15%, with 10% to 12% being the average, per hunter. As the price of the hunt climbs, it’s okay for the percentage to slide toward the lower end of that range. A $2,500 hunt should probably land at 15% or more, while something on the lower end of that percentage scale is reasonable on a $25,000 hunt. If the guide is splitting time between multiple hunters, which is common on 2x1 hunts, then a lower percentage on the spectrum is also acceptable – per hunter. And, by all means, if you feel like your guide

is slacking and not providing an honest effort, then you may want to reflect that in the tipping amount, and vice versa.

Cooks: This can sometimes be trickier than guides. In a larger camp of five or more hunters, the per-hunter tip can appropriately be a bit less than in a small group, typically in the $125 to $200 per hunter range. But in a smaller group, especially if there are 1 to 3 hunters in camp, the client should consider tipping the cook an amount that approaches what they tip their guide, depending on the exact group size and what you feel the other hunters may be doing.

The cook is often putting in as much or more time than the guide, first out of bed and last to bed, on top of the time it takes to procure groceries before the hunt even starts. Their contribution overarches the whole operation more than any single guide does.

Skinners and house cleaners: This gets trickier still. Where do you draw the line on who to tip?

What about the person filling feeders, the field tech prepping gear, or the admin team handling the logistics behind the scenes? On this part of the support team, I’ll simply suggest that if you see someone visibly contributing to the quality of your hunt and feel compelled to reward them, let your conscience be your compass. If you want a starting point, $50 per skinner on a multi-day hunt is a reasonable baseline, adjusted up if they’ve clearly gone above and beyond. This comes up most often on international hunts, where there’s a broader ancillary support team and labor rates are sometimes a fraction of what they are in the US. Pooling Tips: I’m not a fan, and neither are most of the higher-performing guides. Pooling effectively rewards underachievers and penalizes overachievers. The exception is when there’s no fixed routine and hunters are swapped among guides as the hunt progresses, which I’m also not a fan of unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Corporate Hunts – If there’s ever an honest oversight on tips, it’s usually on corporate hunts, where the host company assumes the invitees will handle that detail and the invitees assume the host company already has.

Non-Cash Tips: It’s fairly common for hunters to give their guide a gift, like a knife or even a gun.

As a rule, cash is king in this space, so my recommendation is to treat gifts as something in addition to cash, not in place of it. A high-dollar gun topped with quality optics can be plenty generous on its own, and most guides would be thrilled with that alone, but a guide with years in the business already has a drawer full of knives. Gifts are a wonderful gesture; just don’t let one substitute for the gratuity itself.

I’ll close by saying again that gratuities on outfitted hunts are an industry standard, much like tipping a fishing guide, a ski instructor, or the crew on a deep-sea charter. The ranges are highly variable, and what someone tips isn’t always proportional to how pleased they were with the service. Some people simply have more to give than others, and some are just naturally more generous than others.

One thing is for certain: this will forever remain a popular topic that hunters cuss and discuss.

2027 Conklin Award winner Gervasio Negrete 2027. Hunting has always been my passion, and although I haven’t been to a hunt I haven’t enjoyed, my favorites are pursuing mountain game. The adventure, challenges, and toughness of these hunts are unique.
