Summerwood - a vision of success and compassion Caring for those who have cared for us As we watch our parents, grandparents and other loved ones grow older there eventually comes a time when it becomes apparent that they require more care. Whether it be selecting a nursing home, providing proper medication or finding a physician or therapist that can help to make them more comfortable. We spare no expense when it comes to caring for those who cared for us when we were children up until adulthood. In this special section, The Crowley Post-Signal provides readers with a number of doctor’s offices, nursing homes and other businesses that are caring and dedicated when it comes to caring for the elderly. Many of the businesses and facilities that are included in this Senior Citizen edition also provide products and services for younger people as well, but have taken proper steps to make sure that the older people of Acadia Parish are not forgotten. For members of their families they never will be.

The staff at Summerwood Nursing and Rehab Facility take pride in providing feelings of compassion and togetherness

You Care For Each Other You Need A Pharmacist Who Cares, Too To us, the best kind of pharmacist knows not just medicine, but also you. A pharmacist who, for example, takes time to determine whether brand or generic prescriptions are best for your health. And, above all, a pharmacist who understands your health enough to be able to address your health care questions and concerns. Welcome to the pharmacy where health care also means “We care.”

It’s Your Money

By Sandy Melancon Financial Advisor

THE CROWLEY POST-SIGNAL

The financial toll of Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s disease currently impacts over 5.3 million Americans, and that number is escalating with a new case being diagnosed every 70 seconds. One out of eight people age 65 and older (13 percent) has Alzheimer’s. Women, who on average live longer than men, are more likely than men to have this disease. One of the first symptoms is a decline in the ability to handle financial matters. Paying bills, balancing a checkbook, even simple tasks such as making change can become increasingly difficult. Victims may also begin showing very poor judgment about money, giving away large sums to telemarketers or paying for home repairs or products they don’t need. In addition to seeking medical care, there are other actions that the family should take. The affected person should be involved in this planning if he/she is still lucid. If not already in place, a living will

(health care directive) and power of attorney should be drawn up. Together these documents will allow a spouse, adult child, or trusted friend to make decisions about finances and medical care if the patient becomes unable to make his/her wishes known. It doesn’t take long for round-the-clock care or a stay in a nursing home to deplete one’s savings. Seek out a financial advisor who specializes in planning for incapacity to devise a long-term strategy to pay the costs of care. An elder-law attorney can set up trusts to protect a family’s assets if the patient seeks government benefits. These arrangements must be made early on because Congress has made it more difficult to shelter assets and also because time constraints are in force. The annual cost of taking care of Alzheimer’s patients was $172 billion in 2009. In addition to the financial cost, there

is the even more distressing human cost. Alzheimer’s is a cruel disease that causes debilitating problems with communicating, learning, thinking, and reasoning--problems severe enough to have a very negative impact on an individual’s work, social activities, and family life. Another cost that is often overlooked is the toll it takes on the caregivers. Caring for a person with Alzheimer’s is often very difficult, and many family caregivers experience high levels of emotional stress and depression can result. Caregivers also frequently face new problems concerning their own health, employment, income, and financial security. A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease is definitely devastating, but don’t let it paralyze you to the point of inaction. Formulate a plan that includes legal, financial, and other steps that can ease some of the worries facing you and your loved one.

Summerwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is a full service long-term care facility which emphasizes moving our residents toward maximum functioning. With a staff of highly trained medical, dietary, social & rehab staff, Summerwood’s commitment to our residents is unsurpassed. Gueydan Memorial used to use the slogan “a little something extra,” but these days “a lot more extra” might be more accurate. The massive 10 foot television screen in the mall area might be the first thing that catches your eye, but is just the tip of the iceberg. “Culture change” is the motto at Gueydan Memorial and more resident choices in everyday life is its meaning. GMGH switched to restaurant select menus for lunch. This means the residents have choices of what they will eat that day. Choices of meals is just the beginning. Choices also extend to bath times, bath options, meal times, wake up times and even flexible medications schedules. Like most nursing homes, Gueydan Memorial has full baths with handicapped showers. Adult living is not about the organization with the most stars, though Gueydan Memorial has that; it is about having a home-like atmosphere to live in.
