A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR

A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR

Season’s Greetings! Thank you so much for taking the time to read this brief introduction to our Winter edition of the Leisure Connection for the City of Greeley and our surrounding friends and neighbors. It is indeed you and your families who make what we do in Leisure Service so enjoyable and worthwhile and I hope you take a moment to find that special program or service within our treasure-trove of offerings. If you don’t see something you would like, drop us a line or let any of our staff know at any facility. The success of our offerings is up to you and we would love to know what it is you like (or don’t like) about us! Or…consider applying for a vacancy on any number of our citizen advisory boards. Vacancies are announced regularly at www.greeleygov.org. This is a very special time of the year for all of us and I encourage you to explore some of the special events we have forthcoming this season. Plan to attend the Festival of Trees at the Union Colony Civic Center Nov 26-Dec 3 (see page 16) – a very special annual treat! Or take in one of our many shows, Director of the including special children’s performances, at the UCCC this season or get some Leisure Services Department tickets as special gifts for friends and family (go to UCSTARS.com for current Andrew show information). McRoberts,CPRP When is the last time you visited the Greeley Historical Museum? We’ve andy.mcroberts@greeleygov.com got a new exhibit opening December 10 – Colorado Takes Off! – a traveling 970.350.9425 exhibit sponsored by the Colorado Aerospace History Project. This astonishing interactive and technically advanced exhibit will feature video, audio, wondrous scale models and artifacts telling stories from the past 100 years of Colorado’s aeronautical history. And while you’re there, check out WELD COUNTY TOWNS: The First 150 Years - a coffee table book available for sale and written by our own Nancy Lynch and Greeley Museum staff. Proceeds will benefit the Friends of Greeley Museums. Speaking of sales, stock up for those special gifts this season at Selma’s Store at Centennial Village where we will be selling all sorts of merchandise, some up to 50% off, from Nov 25-Dec 24. You’ll want to make a special trip to the village on Dec 10, 3-7pm for the annual Homesteader’s Holiday which will include a Cowboy Santa, caroling, candle dipping, piñata breaking, Victorian ornaments, Cowboy Christmas in the Stone House and more! And please don’t forget to stay active this winter and come skating, rock climbing, swimming, play some basketball and racquetball or use our fitness facilities and classes – we’d love to see you! Cheers and good tidings!

New Concussion Regulations – Senate Bill 40 – Training required for all Volunteer Coaches

Recently, the State Senate approved a new bill aimed at preventing young athletes from returning to a game unless they've received medical clearance. The bill named for Jake Snakenberg, a 14-year-old high school football player from Grandview, CO who died after he suffered a concussion. Senate Bill 40, which was Snakenberg's number, would require annual training for coaches and also to pull kids from the game immediately if there are warning signs. This is an important bill in respect to protecting children from a very serious injury that can have lasting effects. As of January 1, 2012, all youth sports coaches, in any sport, will be required to complete an online training before they are allowed to coach. The online training is brief, but offers valuable information about how to recognize a possible concussion and what actions should be taken if coaches suspect a player may be injured. Please take a look at http://activecoach.orcasinc.com. Here coaches will be able to take the concussion training and get a certificate of completion. We appreciate your assistance in helping to minimize this very serious sports injury. With proper training and the right measures, together we can continue to provide the best environment for our kids to enjoy athletics.

Online Registration Did you know that you can register online for most programs and courses offered by the City of Greeley Department of Leisure Services? This tool is available 24-hours a day, seven days a week! That’s right! No more mass registration lines at 6am. HERE’S HOW…STEP BY STEP

Online Registration Step by Step Instructions Go to: http://online.activecommunities.com/Greeley. Customers must obtain a Login ID and PIN to access their account online. If you have previously participated in any City of Greeley activities, please contact the Leisure Services Department customer services representatives at 350.9401 or 350.9400. If you have not participated in City of Greeley activities you will need to set up an account online by clicking on the Create New Account tab. Complete required information and submit for review. Once your account is created, you will be notified in a 48-hour period, via email, of your Login ID and PIN. Once ID and PIN are obtained you may access your account online. You will not be able to change, add or remove anyone or anything from your account. If something is not correct, please contact your customer service representatives at 350.9401 or 350.9400. To register, browse the Activities tab. There you can pull up activities by category or if you have the current Leisure Connection you can even type in the specific course code to bring up the program/course you would like to register for. Once you have found what you are looking for click ADD, if you are unsure the course selected is the right one, click DETAILS. Under details it will list the course dates, fees, ages and a small description of the course selected. After you select add you will be moved to My Basket. In My Basket is where you will choose the client you would like to put in the program selected. After doing so you will be able to GO TO CHECKOUT or CONTINUE SHOPPING. You will also have the option to CLEAR BASKET in case you change your mind. You may also REMOVE items separately. If you are ready to checkout hit the Go To Checkout tab. This will bring you to a breakdown of fees. Please make sure everything is correct and credit card information is entered. Nothing is finalized until payment is taken. If you are satisfied hit COMPLETE TRANSACTION located at the bottom of the page or CANCEL CHECKOUT if you would like to cancel and return to the Activities page. Can I register for any course with the Online System? Not all classes will be available for online registration depending on the course requirements (age, pre-requisites, etc). Classes available for online registration will display the ADD button on the GRO System and a message indicating availability will be displayed. Please Note: A small nonrefundable convenience fee is charged when registering online. May I sign-up for a membership online? Currently you cannot sign-up for a membership using our online system. We offer several types of memberships — Family, Corporate, Student and Senior across all of our facilities. For more information about our memberships please contact us at 970.350.9400 or 970.350.9401. Existing members however, may renew their memberships online.
