at our summer camp opportunities, spring and summer sports, and the various educational classes available – we’re sure you’ll find something to keep them active and challenge their minds. Remember, reducing the time that they spend in front of electronic screens (phones, computers and games) is just as important as a daily diet full of fruits and vegetables. Help them make the right choices so they can learn some activities that will carry them throughout their lives on a path to good habits and healthy lifestyles. — Mary M. Russell Recreation Marketing

he City of Greeley Museum’s local history expert, Peggy Ford Waldo, released a new book in December 2016. The book, “Greeley,” is part of the “Images of America Series,” printed by Arcadia Publishing. The series documents the history of neighborhoods, towns and cities throughout the United States. “Greeley” contains information about notable individuals, businesses, schools and churches in the area dating back to 1870. According to Dan Perry, manager for the City of Greeley Museums, “The Greeley History Museum’s Curator of Development Peggy Ford Waldo is a treasure. Her knowledge of regional history is truly encyclopedic, and she shares some of it in her new book by Arcadia Press titled “Greeley.” We are very fortunate to have her on staff. She has worked very hard on this book that includes many historic photographs of Greeley and that come from our Hazel E. Johnson Research Center.” Ford Waldo has worked for the City of Greeley Museums since 1979 and has served as the development curator since 2010.

For more details about the book or to purchase a copy, call 970-350-9220. To learn more about the museum and its research center, visit GreeleyMuseums.com.

Did you know that Greeley has approximately 85 miles of bike lanes within the city limits? And that’s just a small part of the Greeley Bikeway System. Since 2013, Greeley has been designated nationally as a bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community. What does that mean to you? A safe environment for bicycle enthusiasts and a clear road map for those who enjoy bike riding as a cost-effective means of transportation or a fun recreational activity. The League of American Bicyclists reviews all 50 states each year and looks at various communities, businesses and universities that are actively improving bikeways in their areas. The assessment is completed through a voluntary application process and award status is received for a four-year period. Colorado is ranked 7th overall among 20 communities, 100 businesses and 7 universities striving to provide a better biking experience for their residents. The level in which a City is ranked is based on a variety of factors, evaluating not just local government involvement, but the combined efforts of schools, businesses and organizations as a whole that are actively working towards a bike safe community. To learn more about the whole process, check out the website bikeleague.org. By making bicycling safe and convenient for Greeley residents, the City provides ways to improve the public’s overall health, reduces traffic congestion and improves air quality – all things that contribute to a healthier lifestyle. FEATURED PARK

FEATURED PARK

of seating originally on site. The next largest feature installed is the brand new restroom building. This building is energy-efficient with LED lighting, water saving fixtures and hand blowers instead of paper towels. It replaces a 40-year-old restroom, which was not up to standards, with a new ADA accessible building with fantastic amenities to make your visit to the park more enjoyable. There is also a large open turf area to the south of the new restroom that will accommodate sports, kite flying, or just lounging and enjoying the sun while the kids are kept busy with all there is to see and do on the new playground. If your kids are looking for a new adventure, visit Westmoor Park, north of the 10th Street post office, and let them see all the new activities that await them and their imaginations.

Westmoor Park, located at 601 38th Avenue, has recently undergone significant changes that will make you want to venture out to see what’s new. The newly installed playground has a space theme that is sure to excite kids of all ages. With a 2-story-tall rocket ship, slides, climbers and swings, there is a little something for everyone. The most exciting feature of this new playground is the zip line seat. This new zip line takes the riders around a large loop accelerating off the launch pad and swinging them through a loop back to the other side, it’s quite a rush and will keep your little explorers busy for hours. Other new features in the park include two new picnic areas, one covered and one uncovered, doubling the amount

Need a Bike? We have one for you!

The Family FunPlex is open Mon-Fri from 5am-10pm, Sat 7am-8pm and Sun 11am-10pm. SISTER CITY PROGRAM

Moriya, Japan Student Exchange Program The City of Greeley and Moriya, Japan, have been celebrating and fostering a Sister City relationship for over 20 years. This June, several students in grades 8 through 12 during the 2016-2017 school year will join adult representatives from the City of Greeley and travel to Japan. The Sister City Student Exchange Program is a wonderful opportunity for students from both cities to explore each other’s countries and learn more about their cultures, traditions and ways of life. The City of Greeley offers students a stipend of $1,000 toward their travel expenses. The remainder of the trip cost comes from the students and their families; however, students are encouraged to seek sponsors to help offset the cost of their trip. If you are interested in sponsoring a student, please contact Mari Hein Beegle at 970-350-9449. More information about the program can be found at Greeleygov.com/Moriya.
