Andrew McRoberts,CPRP

andy.mcroberts@greeleygov.com 970.350.9425 It is hard to believe that autumn is nearly here and that soon we will be in full swing with fall activities and crisp Colorado air! I invite you to take advantage of one of the best seasons we have ever hosted at the Union Colony Civic Center and the 25th Anniversary of our world class

We are very pleased to continue a wonderful partnership with School District 6 and the provision of Middle School Sports (6th and 7th grades) this next year. Check out opportunities for football, volleyball, and boys’ and girls’ basketball, either through your boundary school or by contacting us directly at the Greeley Recreation Center, 350.9400. In addition, volunteer coaches for youth programs of all ages are always in need, and we greatly appreciate your support and consideration if you would care to contribute. If interested, please contact Recreation Superintendent Dale Elder at 336.4200.

Homestead Park — our newest park in Greeley’s family of beautiful venues is being prepared for completion and will be available to you in September. This unique park, just off of 35th Ave and west 29th Street, celebrates the great outdoors; I invite you and your children to explore wetlands, wooded areas, walking paths, a “naturescape” playground and even a unique new public art sculpture – “Rain Symphony.” Come out to explore and discover! See page 60 for more information. Lastly, we are launching a community campaign to construct a magnificent playground for all – an inclusive play area where children and families of ALL abilities will be able to play together. If you are interested in helping or contributing to our campaign, please feel free to contact me at any time! Have a fantastic fall! Yours in play, Andy

THEIR STORY

BEGINS WITH YOU

We only have 2,000 days between the time a baby is born and when that child begins kindergarten. 90% of critical brain development happens in that time. When children have high quality early care and education no matter their caretaker, they are more likely to be: ready for kindergarten; reading on target by 3rd grade; engaged to stay in school, graduate, and pursue higher education to succeed as an adult. Promises for Children is a community partnership that makes it easy to learn how to be a great parent. It’s easier than you think, and it’s absolutely free. Featured Park…

Sanborn Park 2828 13th Street Burton Davis Sanborn (1859-1914) was 11 years old when he came to Greeley with his parents, John and Jennie. Because he grew up in this area, he became aware of the fact that water was the key to development in northern Colorado. Mr. Sanborn organized the Seven Lakes Reservoir Co., with reservoirs located on more than 800 acres northeast of Loveland. The largest, Boyd Lake, was financed almost solely by Sanborn and completed in 1908. In 1901, several small irrigation companies were incorporated as the North Poudre Irrigation Co., with B.D. Sanborn as president, George M. Houston (his father-in-law) as secretary, and Charles H. Wheeler as treasurer. The company had $400,000 in capital stock, 14 reservoirs and 20,000 acres of land for sale. In 1901-02, its most expensive project was the construction of Fossil Creek Reservoir. In 1893, Mr. Sanborn impounded irrigation waters in a depression at the site, which was known as Westlake Park. In 1963, the park was purchased

by the City of Greeley to use for water retention. It became Sanborn Park, so named in recognition of the efforts of B.D. Sanborn. Today the 40-acre site is utilized by soccer clubs, fishing derbies, and remote control boating enthusiasts. Along with a playground, two volley courts, and a picnic shelter/ restroom facility, there is a .5 mile concrete trail which encompasses the park. In addition to human visitors, migratory waterfowl also frequent the site. Thank you, Mr. Sanborn, for realizing the necessity of providing water to our portion of the state, not only for irrigation purposes but also for its recreational aspects.

Upcoming Shows & Exhibits

Experience the wide variety of artwork displayed in the Tointon Gallery by viewing exhibits throughout the year. Attend our receptions to visit with local and regional artists. We are located between the Union Colony Civic Center and the Greeley Recreation Center. All events are open to the public and free of charge. Here is a sneak peak into future gallery exhibits:

Moving Earth and Water Sep 6-Oct 12

To kick off the 25th Anniversary of the Tointon Gallery & the Union Colony Civic Center, Greeley High School art students will display a wide variety of multi-media artwork. After an inspiring presentation by Public Artists Norman Lee and Shane Albritton, the young emerging artists use the same guidelines to create artwork for the gallery. The professional artists combined two themes, Greeley’s historical water story and the beauty of performing arts, to create the monumental water feature in front of the UCCC. Thoughtful and inspiring pieces have been created by students from their first experience with the Public Art process. Visit the gallery to see the high school artists’ unique interpretations.

Colorado’s Great Outdoors — John Fielder Photography Oct 19-Dec 14 • Reception & Book Signing Oct 19 • 5-7pm

Please join us in celebrating the UCCC and Tointon Gallery 25th Anniversary with John Fielder’s exhibition of exquisite Colorado landscape photography. “John Fielder has worked tirelessly to promote the protection of Colorado’s ranches, open spaces, and wildlands during his 30-year career as a nature photographer. Over 40 books have been published depicting his Colorado photography.” per web site Fielder has added many new shots of Weld County, including the Poudre River, especially for this Tointon Gallery exhibit. Meet the artist at the gallery reception as well as the book signing following his photographic slide show set to the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra’s performance the same evening. Prints and books will be available for sale.

Homestead Park Playground and Open Space will soon re-open! The work that began in April of this year is nearing completion. Located on 29th Street west of 35th Avenue, Greeley’s newest park is anticipated for grand opening this September. The park will provide amenities such as a new playground, outdoor classroom, shelters, sidewalks, landscaping, a wildlife viewing dock and public art. Formerly the Elks Club Golf Course, this site was deeded to the city in 2002 in conjunction with the development of Elks Lake Shopping Center. With over 32 acres of mature trees and lakes, this site will bring something special to the Greeley Park system by providing a unique setting to enjoy urban wildlife within the city limits. With a focus on natural play, the playground will be unlike any other experienced in the park system. This Quality of Life project received a $6,000 grant from the XCEL Energy Foundation/ Colorado Tree Coalition (CTC) grant program; providing an additional 52 trees to compliment those currently on site.  Get ready to discover Homestead Park Playground and Open Space – for the opening date visit… www.greeleygov.com/Parks/default.aspx.
