ABOUT

THE PAPER THIS DATA NEWSPAPER WAS PRODUCED BY AMY RICKETTS, A GRAPHIC AND SERVICE DESIGNER, IN COLLABORATION WITH ALISON PRENDIVILLE FROM THE LONDON COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATION, UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS. OUT OF THE THOUSANDS OF DIFFERENT DATA SETS FROM LSE’S RESEARCH (IMPACT OF SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH: MAXIMIZING THE IMPACT OF ACADEMIC RESEARCH), SELECTIVE DATA WAS EXTRACTED AND VISUALISED TO PROVIDE A DIGESTIBLE NARRATIVE OF SOME OF THE KEY FINDINGS. THE DATA PRESENTED IS A SNAPSHOT OF A POINT IN TIME OF WHAT IS AN ONGOING PROCESS OF CALCULATIONS AND VISUALISATION. WITH RESPECT TO THE VISUAL REPRESENTATION IN THIS NEWSPAPER, THE DATA PRESENTED HAS ALREADY BEEN RECRUNCHED AND RECALCULATED. WE HOPE YOU ENJOY ‘VISUALISING THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH’ AS AN INTRODUCTION TO THIS INCREDIBLY RICH AND DETAILED RESEARCH PROJECT.

THE PROJECT THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL SCIENCES PROJECT AIMS TO DEMONSTRATE HOW ACADEMIC RESEARCH IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES ACHIEVES PUBLIC POLICY IMPACTS, CONTRIBUTES TO ECONOMIC PROSPERITY AND INFORMS PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF POLICY ISSUES AND ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL CHANGES. THE TEAM ARE DEVELOPING QUANTITATIVE METRICS FOR MEASURING IMPACT AND HAVE PERFORMED COMPARATIVE ANALYSES BASED ON A PILOT STUDY OF 120 ACADEMICS PULLED FROM A VARIETY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE DISCIPLINES.
