H

KPASS held its first ever

fundraising week in history- raising money for MSF, Médecins Sans

Frontières. From organising to launching the event, every single Sub-committee fully played their part and I am glad to say that the outcome was fantastic! Over the week we raised a grand total of £442.51! There were three parts to this event “Spread Your Love”selling freshly baked cupcakes, handmade “pastry” gifts, and offering Polaroid services on Houghton Street. I owe a big thankyou to Gloria and the Production Team for their immense effort in making those delicate gifts! We took a lot of orders since the lovely cupcakes and “waffles” attracted much attention from passer-bys. They must have served as brilliant presents for couples and friends (especially when it was near Valentine’s Day!).

Henry was the PIC of the Polaroid booth and he has indeed done an excellent job! Members of the Sub-committees tried to

get as many people to come over as possible to pose with lively speech bubbles, flowers and teddies, so that we were able to sell quite a lot instant films. With lovely stickers and colour pens for decorations, each generous donor brought home a unique photo.

Priscilla and I were the PICs for the edible cupcakes. To be honest, I have never made them before, and was at one point quite fed up with the baking trials. But after several attempts, we finally succeeded in making beautiful and delicious cupcakes, and managed to sell about 150 in just two days! On the last day, a massive batch of the delicacy - 80 cupcakes - was sold out on Houghton Street within three hours.

Other PICs and Subcommittees have put a lot of effort into this event, and HKPASS has also contributed useful ideas and opinions. Without their support, I don’t think it would have been such a fruitful week. The event has enabled me and other Subcommittees to gain an insight into how one would organise an event. As the newly elected Social Service Officer of HKPASS committee 2009-2010, I shall be in charge of the fundraising week next year. I sincerely hope we will be able to raise as much money, if not more, for good cause!

Enrichment from an Act of Kindness.

by Teresa Lo Year 1, Law Student •••

Try to imagine waking up early in the morning for a 9 o’clock class, but this is on a Sunday morning. Yes! That’s how early one has to wake up for Food Chain. Though doing Food Chain means a Sunday morning traded off, when I think of how desperately I want love and care whenever I fall ill, I would immediately gain motivation to get out of bed and willingly offer a helping hand to those in need. For those who are not familiar with what Food Chain does, let me give you a brief introduction. Food Chain is a charitable organisation providing nutrition services including home-delivered meals, essential groceries and nutrition advice to men, women and children who are chronically sick as a result of HIV related illnesses. As many would know the HIVpositive have weaker immune system, therefore by balancing their diet, we make sure they are healthy, or at least have better strength, to fight against their illnesses, to get well and to stay well. As a passionate cook, I enjoyed my experience at Food Chain even more. I still remember my first browniemaking session in its kitchen in Kentish Town with Joyce. It is a relatively small kitchen and not very well equipped. Imagine having to melt 6 pieces of standard-sized chocolate without a microwave! We had to stand in front of the fire and keep on stirring to melt them - we felt like we were giving ourselves facial steaming. Anyway, it was a simple task and all we needed to do was to follow instructions from the recipe. By the time we finished removing fresh brownies from the oven, we felt so proud because they looked and tasted heavenly. I really have to say my experience at Food Chain was incredible - apart from baking brownies, I got to cook different cuisines such as African. I never knew I was capable of preparing a meal for 80+ people within 4 hours! To me, it was a really a big achievement because I normally cook for a few people. This proves nothing is impossible.

“I have not eaten properly fo r we e k s before I got m y fi r s t meal from you… I cannot not believe the wonderful food you sent me and my daughter and I thank everyone.” These quotes which can be found on the Food Chain website truly reflect how people in need feel when they are offered a helping hand. Doing voluntary work can make one’s life more fruitful and rewarding. It is not only about helping out, but also about gaining a sense of accomplishment by getting involved. For those who love cooking and helping others, do join us at the Food Chain! Translate your knowledge and interest into action so that you can enrich yourself and others. I am sure that you guys would know exactly what I mean.
