MISSION STATEMENT Promote the city of Thunder Bay provincially & nationally Inspire kids to stay involved in ski racing beyong U16 Create an environment for the participants, volunteers, sponsors and spectators, which is fun and rewarding Create a memorable life skill building event that will prepare the athletes and coaches for higher level skiing Raise the bar for future U16 Provincial Championship quality & excitement.

DAVE BRADLEY EVENT COMMITTEE CHAIR, LAKE SUPERIOR DIVISION Last March our Thunder Bay ski community accomplished its goal of creating a truly special event for Ontario’s top 14 and 15 year old athletes. Overall, feedback on the event was fantastic. We are honoured that many have commented the event was one of the best, if not the best, U16 championship events ever seen in Ontario to date! The Race Organizing Committee was able to mobilize an entire ski community as well as local civic and business partners to host the event. Additionally, strong input and support provided by Scott Barrett, Brad Lashley and the AOA support team was critical to the event’s success. The LSDA and our member clubs wish to offer our huge thanks all individuals, organizations and businesses who stepped up to contribute to this great event. The Recap highlights just how powerful a well-run community based event can be for a community, for Ontario’s top alpine skiers and for development of the sport of alpine ski racing province wide. Hosting major events like the U16 Champs is critical for LSDA to build and sustain its event hosting capacity.. And we are ready and anxious to host major ski events and training opportunities for Ontario athletes in the years to come!”

BRAD LASHLEYT TECHINICAL DIRECTOR, ALPINE ONTARIO The 2014/2015 U16 provincial championship event planning began in June of 2014 and was a major undertaking for the smallest of the AOA division and they rose to the occasion. In partnership with the entire host community the LSD ROC facilitated pre event resort visits and host resort and the LSD ROC organised pre event inspections and facilitated the creation of a new trail for the SG event. Thinking outside the box was a true driving force in many of the decisions as the ROC strove to produce a one of a kind and exceptionally unique experience. The start ramp creation was a major example of how creative your volunteers got in creating an experience that all of the athletes will never forget. The overall event quality and race event experience was very good and has proven to be a tremendous benchmark event for AOA and its divisions to measure future events standards against. Thank You to the City of Thunder Bay, LSDA and the event partners for stepping up and delivering a spectacular event for the athletes of AOA.

INFO & STATS

“Sport tourism is an integral element of Thunder Bay’s overall tourism industry and the U16 Provincial Championships contributed significantly with a $966 000 economic impact on the city. The overwhelming success of the event and glowing feedback from the participants continues to prove that Thunder Bay has the ski infrastructure, transportation networks and accommodation options to host great events. Most importantly, the community’s passionate alpine ski leadership and committed volunteer base were essential to welcoming athletes and their families and demonstrating that we’re a world class sport event destination. The event’s legacy is the increased enthusiasm within the community for bidding on and hosting additional and larger alpine events, ensuring winter sport tourism economic impacts continue to grow into the future.”

ALPINE ONTARIO

ONE PROVINCE, ONE PROGRAM! “The Craigleith U16 team was very impressed with the U16 Provincial Championships hosted by Lake Superior Division Alpine at Loch Lomond, Thunder Bay this past season. The race hill, “The Giant”, certainly lived up to it’s name and made for a challenging and exciting race series where the athletes had to bring their best in order to compete. Furthermore, the volunteers and race organizers did an incredible job setting-up and preparing for each and every race ensuring a fair and efficient race series. It felt like the whole town of Thunder Bay rallied around this race series in an effort to make it one of the best provincial championships Ontario has ever seen and I must say I believe they succeeded!”

-Adrian Dougherty

U16 Head Coach - Craigleith Ski Club, SOD

“The 2015 U-16 Provincials were a resounding success. Dave Bradley, and the entire race organizing committee worked tirelessly over many months to put on a fantastic event which clearly showcased the passion and dedication that the Thunder Bay region has for the sport of ski racing. The U16 athletes were given an experience that I’m sure they will not soon forgot and hopefully propel them to want to continue to participate in the sport for many years to come. The atmosphere both on the hill and off was electric and it was evident based on so many compliments from visiting parents and coaches that the event was enjoyed by all. “ Thank you again to everyone involved in hosting the 2015 U-16 Provincial Alpine Championships!”

-Scott barrett

Executive Director - Alpine Ontario

“The NZ Foundation was thrilled to support The U16 Ontario Alpine Championships hosted in Thunder Bay. The race organizing committee and volunteers should be commended for hosting a very high quality race. Congrats to all those involved. The NZ Foundation was pleased to support the two elements of our mandate which are Athletic Development and Safety. Athletes from Ontario rarely have opportunities to develop their Super G skills in a controlled and safe environment. The Foundation recognized this and without hesitation purchased the lane space, provided Willy Bags and 40 rolls of B-netting to help provide a safe race and training environment. Also, with the assistance of the Doctors at Lakehead University we were pleased to host a parent educational seminar on the topic of concussions. The Foundation looks forward to supporting future events in the Northern Region.”

Steve Brown

DIRECTor, NIK ZORICIC FOUNDATION

NIK ZORICIC FOUNDATION The Nik Zoricic Foundation (NZF) is focused on improving athlete development and safetywithin the realms of alpine ski racing and ski cross in Canada. Ontario’s annual U16 Championships offer an excellent opportunity to promote both of these critical mandates. NZF is partnering with the 2015 Mackenzie Ontario U16’s Race Organizing Committee to make significant contributions toward both Athlete Development and Safety . The NZF loaded up a shiny new NZF trailer with 40 rolls of safety B-Netting and sent it up to Northwestern Ontario.  The net was used at the Provincial Championships as well as other events and training the LSDA is involved in either hosting or assisting.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Alpine event testament to organization skills c ongratulations to the U16 provincial chair, the organizing ommittee, on-hill volunteer team, sponsors and the City of Thunder Bay on executing a fantastic Mackenzie Investments U16 Ontario Provincial Alpine Ski Championships.

Everything I have heard, seen and read has been simply top drawer. The reports from my family both Allison (volunteer) and Samantha (athlete) have been stellar. The event was not only great fun on and off the hill for 14 and 15 year olds but also a high quality athelete development experience. The Thunder Bay organizing team have set a new high standard for running such an event. It was clear from the outset when I read the planning document back in the fall that every detail had been considered. Well done to all involved! Thanks for making it safe, exciting, fun and fair. Samantha looks forward to being back in Thunder Bay soon. - David Boughner , Toronto ROLF WAFFLER, CHIEF OF RACE (TECH)

All Ontario kids at U16 deserve a festival – not just those who qualify for Topolino, CDA Winter Games, Whistler Cup – Lots of our future high performing athletes could be just outside the current fast group. Create a spirit of fun/accomplishment/pride/learning and reflect this spirit through activities and social media (website and facebook page) Prove to Ontario that a city like Thunder Bay has the potential to be an important partner in athlete development at reasonable cost. Prove to our event partners & sponsors that supporting major ski racing events in Thunder Bay is good business and good for the community.

“The tuning tent was great. Everyone in T-Bay was very friendly and helpful. Best of the four U14/ U16 events we have attended!”

“For a parent who was unable to travel with his son, your website allowed me to also “participate” in the event which was brilliant! My son also travelled on his own for the first time and everyone who was part of this process was excellent. It is an event that we will cherish for the rest of our lives. Thank you.”

“the ROC did an excellent job in ensuring a safe and consistent race environment for all the athletes over the course of the six day competition. “ - PETE DYSON AOA Race Quality Manager

EVENT SPECIFIC INFO - WEBSITE

With the goal of having a one stop site for all athletes, coaches, volunteers, organizers, media and parents, we worked to design a comprehensive, interactive fun, informative, website. The site provides a wide variety useful background information to enhance athlete’s and viewers overall experience with the Provincials. We tried to create a “shared experience” feel to the event. Live streaming was the icing on the cake. We even had viewers reporting in from Mexico, Texas and Australia! The site also publicized key scheduling and venue information. As well, there were links for viewers to share information the Race Organizing Committee was searching for from athletes and volunteers. As soon as we went live, we started to see hits from all over the province and from down in the USSA Central Regions. As we got closer to the event date, we saw significant spikes in people coming to the site, taking advantage of its functionality, booking hotels, cars, etc.We designed the website to be responsive to any device, for ease of access on mobile phones/devices. Skiers, coaches & parents could access all the information from on the hill. The site provides direct links to all sponsors and partner websites. Post event, the U16ski.ca website continues to be live. It contains useful information for the ski community going forward. As well, it showcases what we as a ski community can to for the next major event. Thus, it continues to promote our sponsors and event delivery partners along with Alpine Ontario, the Lake Superior Division Alpine and the City of Thunder Bay!
