June 2006

Dear Class of 2006, Congratulations! You are about to graduate from high school. For some of you this accomplishment must seem to have been a long time coming and for others ninth grade feels as if it was yesterday. You have done all that was asked of you. You have written and figured, created and examined. You have experimented, investigated and concluded. You have used the diversity embodied by your class to challenge assumptions and to build community. You have become talented leaders and committed colleagues. You have defined your values and led your lives accordingly. Your hard work, your honesty and your commitment have ehriched the lives of all who have shared these halls with you. Thank you. All that you have done here has made the high school stronger. We are grateful for this and, in turn, hope you take to your next endeavor some of what you have learned from other members of the LREI community. We hope that you continue to strengthen LREI through your involvement as members of the Alumni Association. We look forward to hearing of your future successes. We are proud of all that you have done. Best wishes,

June 9,2006 Dear Graduating Seniors, After one trimester of your tenth grade year, your grade Dean and English teacher, Megan Rose, got together with Sarvjit, Mark Bledstein and myself to discuss your English and History sections. It had become clear that the way that some of the stronger personalities in your grade were put together in those classes made creating an appropriate educational atmosphere somewhat difficult. The four of us spent a great deal of time trying to mix and match the various members of your class in such a way that would minimize disruption and maximize your ability to harness your clearly considerable intellectual talents. In the end, the sheer number of those strong personalities made an ideal solution impossible. We did the best we could. And we worried about what the school would be like when you were Seniors. I take this time to remind you of how you were as a grade back then - and to poke a little fun - because I have never before seen an entire grade mature and come together the way that yours has over the past three years. Your personalities are just as strong as they were then, and their number just as great, but that creative and intellectual energy has been completely redirected. Energy that once might have been used to disrupt or sidetrack classroom discussions now moves those discussions in ways that always impress and delight and often surprise your teachers. Energy that might have been used for, well, mayhem is now channeled toward doing good and great deeds, both in the school and outside of it. A class that was once disdainful of student-faculty collaboration has now grabbed hold of the Student Government and the Honor Board and has created an impressive legacy of changes and a renewed tradition of student voice. Yours was the class that realized that with twelfth graders away on Senior Projects, the new Student Government needed to start sooner rather than later. There was too much to do, and you were in no mood to wait for the Fall. This class has many other legacies as well, too many to put down here. At the risk on singling out one, suffice it to say that the Darth Vader theme song will echo through the PAC tong after June of2006. You should know that I have spoken with many faculty members about you as a class, and that we are enormously pleased with the terrific group and the terrific individuals you have become. As always, we come upon graduation with a mix of emotions - great pride and great sadness. Know too that we welcome you back - no, we expect you back, and frequently, and we will be sad if you do not return. We will always be here for you. r i

Student Action for Children The Community Service Roundtable of Little Red School House & Elisabeth Irwin High School Giving Back with Hope

“There is no use complaining unless we are planning on changing something. I haven’t given up on the world, although sometimes it is discouraging. Student Action for Children is one way I can make a difference” - Student Trustee, Student Action for Children Children are our future. All children are not as fortunate as we are. They deserve the education, health care, love, support and opportunities for personal growth that wili enable them to make the most of their lives. The students of LREI believe it is our duty to give back to all the children of New York City ... with hope. - Mission Statement, Student Action for Children About Student Action for Children Student Action for Children is dedicated to helping New York City's children, their families and their communities. It seeks to address, both through direct action and indirectly through grants of financial assistance, social conditions that rob children of their childhood, interfere with their smooth transition to adulthood and prevent them from fulfilling their potential for productive, satisfying lives. Student trustees of Student Action for Children are prepared for lives of active, effective citizenship and for potential careers in the human and social services and philanthropy. SAFC believes that by fostering the innate strengths and resources of spirit that exist within individuals, families and communities, it can contribute to the creation of a spiral of hope for all the children of New York. Over the past three years, LEI students have raised over $60,000, assisted over 20 New York City community-based orga nizations and the children they serve, and responded to such national and international emergencies as the Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina.

German Exchange Program

t T T f

rr This year; a total of twenty E.l. students participated in the German-Exchange Program to Munich. This made it the largest number of students to both express an interest in hosting as well as go to Germany since the program’s foundation in the fall of 2002. One might correctly imagine that taking twenty high school students though the New York Subway System, on buses and through airport terminals, under the supervision of just two teachers, would be at times both challenging and stressful. However; be that as it was we could not have imagined a better or funnier time any other way. Between Tom’s speeches of “if you make us wait two minutes you'd better multiply that by the number of people there are...” And Chad’s encounter with the German Police, who were said to be “a lot less scary and less strict than Tom and Tim’’ this trip turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences for each one of us. We will always remember the many nights we all spent together having our oh-too-mature snowball fights and late night parties at friends houses. The many utterances of "Hallo" “Guten Tag" “Ich Liebe Dich,” as well as the American students' attempts to remember “E/'ns, Zwei, Drei" or “one, two, three” in German as we were warmly greeted every morning by the young German students in their school who will stick in our hearts and minds forever And who could forget the amazing light-blocking blinds in the movie room at the German school controlled by Raphael pressing a mere button? Or the many hours all forty of us with the teachers spent walking through the beautiful and old city of Munich? And the reluctance with which we left to go home with tears and hugs that were mutually exchanged with our new friends, and of course thewonderful warm memories that will neither be forgotten nor replaced. Those are the ones that made this trip the most remarkable experience for each and every one of us. - Adri and Molly

Now By Kortney Hartz (Inspired by a poem by Alix Olson) Attention shoppers; We have a blue light special on America today And you better hurry because Oh look Bush just bought the constitution Tommy Hilfiger bought the American flag And the Olsen twins got world hunger Kanye got Motown Tammy Faye Baker got Christianity And Samuel A. Alito just bought my ovaries. Paris Hilton has my self-esteem Ryan Seacrest got comedy Ford bought the War And the FCC just bought my voice. So without further a do, I ask you to turn off Your cell phones Ipods Sidekicks Television sets And innocence And just listen. Today we celebrate a man who lived, breathed, died for our equality. Imagine, Dying for something so much greater then yourself, And yet racism still shoves its way through these hallways. No one is allowed to use racism, as no one owns it. Racism is the descendant of not who is good or evil, but hate. I asked you to listen and then imagine and Now I ask you to do. What can we do? In the words of Mr Heron “The revolution will not be televised This all-empowering revolution abyss is what you need to jump into. And let it be known there is no glory for the people that fight for it, So stop looking for heroes and just do. If you are a minority Gay Lesbian Female Big

Go placidly amid the noise & waste, & remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof. Avoid quiet & passive persons unless you are in need of sleep. Rotate your tires. The Gardener By: Han Yongun O my friend, dearest friend, you who cause me to weep Like the flowers "blooming on my love's grave; Like the love encountered suddenly on a desert night With no trace of the rare bird, you gladden me. You bring the fragrance of bones from ancient grave mound. Fragrance that pierces the heavens To weave a garland you gather up the fall flowers and set it On another branch. Put aside the fallen flowers Too become a song sung out in despair becoming hope. Dear friend of mine, friend who cries out at shattered love: Tears will not bring the fallen flowers to bloom once again on the branch; So do not let tears wash over the fallen ones, but in the dust instead At the base of the flowering tree. Friend, my dear friend! No matter how sweet death's fragrance, the bones' white lips cannot be kissed Do not fly the golden set of song around the grave, but set instead The blood-soaked flag upon it. Spring wind will tell of how the dead earth moved at the touch of the Poet's song 1 am so ashamed, my friend. Hearing your song I tremble in shame That is because I hear your song alone-I, who have parted from my love.

Thanks Nicole & Roger for the support and laughs through out these high school years. Thank you mommy for waking me up every morning and always pushing me to my limit. To the Class of2006: Thanks for the memories I will always carry with me through out my life. I'll always remember my high school years as III fun, unusual and very El but I would have it no other way, especially my physics class.

*****Special Thanks To: Kathleen, Susan, Veronique and Hay-Rim. And even though you guys are new in my life, you still manage to know me really well... Chris and Hershey. *****

Meghan, Julia, Mark, Bhawanie, Sarvjit, Ruth, Micah, and Phil. Each one of you have been such an important part of my life, and helped me develop into the person that I am, and I am forever grateful. Roosevelt, you were one of the first people I spoke to in LREI. The first day of class we started talking, and since then have developed a friendship unlike any I’ve ever had. Even though we are both completely different people, you were there for me at times when I thought nobody could help, and you always found a way to. Through our bickering, laughing and talking we have developed a friendship that will stay with me forever. Genesis AKA G-Money!!! The first day I met you was in ninth grade when I was visiting the school, and I’m not going to lie, I was scared. However, every year we have grown closer and closer, and I can’t imagine going through school without you. From our talks in class, to dealing with IS., to proposing to you in front of Antonio, I have had fun with all of it. (Oh, and I still wanna know (Even though you’ll physically abuse me when you see me)....Will you marry me?) No but seriously, you are one of the few people that I know will always be there for me, and I hope you know I will be for you. Amy. What to say. We’ve been through so much together. Our relationship has been a crazy ride, but it is one that I’m extremely proud of. The conversations that we have mean so much to me, and I am so thankful to have somebody to talk to, argue with, and spend time with. You were with me when my car was destroyed, for the play, and every day at school. I hope you know how much our friendship means to me. Michelle, we have had such an amazing time. You are one of the most incredible people that I have ever met. You are kind, smart, funny, dedicated, genuine, the list goes on and on. If it weren’t for all of your work on the benefits, I don’t know what I would have done. I loved working with you on both of them and really do think that our relationship has grown so much in the past few years. Nins...Fm not sure what to say. We’ve probably had the craziest relationship out of everybody, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. You have supported me, and been there for me the whole time, and I value our relationship and the time that we spend together so much. You are such an important part of my life , and I couldn’t imagine it without you. I will always be there for you if you ever need anything. And of course, my Bellsies (AKA Momma). Nothing I put on this page will make you understand the way I feel about you. The fact that you put up with me every day means a lot to me. I’ve known you for my entire life, but we’ve only become friends last year. In that time. I’ve come to love and care about you so much, and I will not be able to ever tell you how much.Thank you so much for all of the time we spent together. And I can’t wait to see where we go from here. Finally my familia. Emilio I am so glad that you came into our lives when you did. You’re such an amazing boy, and I’m so proud of you. You’re much better than I was when I was your age. Vio, you have been so supportive of me through everything that I do, and I’m so glad to have you in my life.I know we fight sometimes, but it’s only because I love you. I’m so proud of everything that you are doing. Mommy and Daddy. I’m so glad that you are my parents. I know that sounds stupid, but I really am. You have both been so supportive of everything that I do, and helped me so much, there is no way that I could ever repay you. But, I will try my best to help you guys whenever you need it, just like you did for me. Thank you for every day that we spend together, and I look forward to each new day with you. To all of you...Thank you for all of the wonderful memories you have given me. You will forever be in my life, and I will forever be in your debt. If any of you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to pick up the phone.

All my love, Javier

Thanks Mommy, I know I would not have been where I am today without you in my life. I love you.

Thanks Daddy for everything you’ve done. I know I have made you proud.

To all my fellow seniors, I love you all. Specifically, Amy, Genesis, Nina, Michelle, Javier, Danny and Josh. I may not say it but you guys mean a lot to me and I won’t ever forget you. P.S.- Bye Melissa and Jerelyn.___________ » ...—9L
