1 December, 2001 Dear Class of 2002, Your graduation represents the end of an era in my life, in that the first ones of your class to arrive at LREI came here the same year I did. I think of my own school days from age four to eighteen and remember them as lasting for all eternity - so I am not quite sure how it comes about that yours seem to have vanished in a flash. I am sure it doesn’t feel that way from your perspective, and rightly so, because in many respects the last fourteen years have contained more history and more change than any previous fourteen years in history. May they be a wonderful platform for you as you graduate and move on to the rest of your lives.

LREI

As a group and as individuals you have extraordinary potential to be happy yourselves and to add to the happiness of the world. You have between you in large measure almost every conceivable talent. You leave behind you the gift of your contributions to this community, for which we all thank you. You take away the ability to think and feel deeply before you decide - about plans, about people, about what matters to you. You can make the world a better place. Indeed I believe you will. Please come back and see us often.

Every best wish,

June 7, 2002 Dear Graduates, I feel close to every graduating class, of course, but I feel a special kinship with the class of ‘02. We shared a moment in our lives - a day that seemed like an eternity - the vivid recollection of which we will carry with us for the rest of our lives. During the course of my senior year in high school a momentous event also occurred. In retrospect, that event changed the world forever. John F Kennedy was felled by an assassin’s bullet in the fall of 1963. I was at basketball practice when the word spread. Thirty-eight years later, you and I were at Charlton Street together on the morning of September 11th 2001. Whether you will look back thirty some years from now and be able to say the world changed forever that morning remains to be seen. I have a feeling you will. The question is how will it have changed. And the answer will depend in part on what each of you, and your generation, does between now and then to change it. I believe your education at this school has prepared you to contribute in positive ways to the new world that will, for better or worse, emerge from the times we have lived through together. I have great confidence in you. I have watched each of you respond to the challenges set before you up until now with seif-awareness, determination, and perseverance. I have faith that each of you will bring those qualities to the challenges that lie ahead.

LREll

Good luck. I hope that you will always keep this place and time in your heart.

Indescribably Unexplainable The solution was hydrochloric acid; The problem Was, therefore, way too complicated To explain. Just like the chicken nuggets Dipped In cottage cheese Left alone On the table in Mcdonalds, Sitting there, in the sun Waiting to curdle some more, If cottage cheese can actually Curdle more than its curdled Self already is. I see the camera; On the table; Sitting there, waiting To take a picture Of the odd moment Of cottage cheese In Mcdonalds. That moment Will be remembered, While the rest of that curdling. The rest of that situation, Won’t. A picture only shows That one moment, not The rest of an unexplainable Life. Ian Patrick

Dawn

In the moments before dawn When the air hangs suspended Between yesterday and tomorrow, There is a quiver of anticipation. As the new day unfolds And the past recedes into memory, Like history’s minor characters Whose stories are forgotten In the chaos of the millennia. Susan Long

Poetry to my Country Amazing... how I never took enough time to appreciate the swaying palm trees of my astonishing country. Never dreamily stared at the brilliant blue tranquil waters, its waves soft spoken-they tell a story. Sad... I never felt the dirt where my country rhythmically sits on. My hands never devoured the sand, engulfing it all, feeling pleased with its beauty. I just saw it as a beautiful ground, candy to my eyes. How I wish I had the time to feel it... I want to sit in my yard and slowly watch everything take its ordinary toll. The content houses gleaming, the brilliant sun blazing, my humble people going about their every day work adoringly. The sounds of the drums and guiro, filtering into my veins, as the wind caresses my face...a welcoming kiss. How unfortunate that I don’t remember my country to it’s perfect glow. Never have I really stared at the rain. Rain that fell like a mountain on my country some days, beating the roofs of houses like a drumBOOM BOOM! Then there where days where the rain fell like the song of a mother, jewelling my soul. It wasn’t just rain it showered... it showered love, growth, strength, blessings. Never took enough time to realize it. Now away from my country, I notice it all. I feel and understand the natural beauty of my native motherland. My love and pride for my country may be brewed without really seeing the wonders. I remain true to my roots. Incredible How each day I ache for my country, to just be there with the mesmerizing palm trees, tranquil waters and patriotic ground. Yet my country Is here... with me. Funny how, away from my country, I realize it. Yet I ache to really BE there and thus start again. To really see and understand the mesmerizing treasures my Quisqueya La Bella offers. My astonishing country, my Dominican pride Republica Doniinicana. Jissel Garda

To my family- Thank you for everything that you have done for me. Even though I don’t express my love everyday, I love you all dearly. To my siblings- Maleek, Kareem, Tatyana, Samina, Kasiem and Elijah, take care of the house and everything while I’m gone. I love you all. The triumvirate- Ashley and Danny- I’ve known you guys since Little Red. You both will hold a place in my heart for as long as I live. You will forever be my family. I love you both. Juan and Moses- Thank you for being there for me. You are two of the most amazing people that I know. I wish you both the best of luck. Keep in touch. To Shayna-1 have known you for over seven years. I’ve watched you grow into the beautiful person that you are today. Thank you for being there for me. We’ll stay in touch. I love you. PFR C18 for life!! To the class of 2002- You all are amazing people. I have watched each one of you grow up and become great people You each have taught me about myself in ways that I could not imagine. You taught me most of all that true friends come in all types. We have had a blast. Don’t forget me, but seriously how can you. I love and will miss you all. Good luck. To everyone at El past and present-1 can’t fit all of your names here, but I definitely will never forget any of you. I will always treasure the times we have had. Stay true to yourselves. I love you all.
