Graduation Memo to LHS Seniors and Parents May 2011 Graduation at LHS

The Lincoln High School Class of 2011 will graduate on Saturday, May 28 at 12:00 noon at Pershing Auditorium. The ceremony will recognize the members of the class as they receive their diplomas and complete their high school education. The public is invited to help honor these graduating seniors by sharing in their joy. This memo is being sent to clarify procedures and make the ceremony respectful and meaningful for everyone. Appropriate Dress Caps and gowns will be distributed on Tuesday, May 17 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (Seniors are expected to take care of fines and other obligations before caps and gowns are picked up.) The gown should be hung on a hanger to help remove the wrinkles. The cap should have a tassel worn on the left side before graduation. Nothing is to be added to the cap or gown. Members of the National Honor Society will be wearing sashes, IB Diploma Seniors will be wearing an IB cord, and seniors who have earned Achievement Awards are encouraged to wear their medals. Seniors are expected to wear “dress” clothes and “dress” shoes with their gown. Nothing is to be taken into the arena under the gown that will be brought out later to distract from the ceremony. Gowns are to be returned to the company immediately after the ceremony in the basement of Pershing. Pictures and Videos There will be a professional photographer on stage to take a picture as the diploma is presented to each graduate. Parents will be given the opportunity to purchase a copy of the picture. A video of the graduation ceremony is also being produced. We will have a large screen to project a live picture as each graduate crosses the stage and families will have the opportunity to purchase a copy of this video. Because these professional pictures and videos will be available, we hope family members will be able to relax and enjoy the ceremony and not worry about taking pictures. We will have limited space for personal pictures to be taken on the south side near the stage. Family members who want to take pictures are asked to stay in the area designated for photographers. We ask that photographers not get in the way of seniors nor interrupt the ceremony. Arrive Early Each senior must arrive at Pershing and go to the basement by 11:00 A.M. Parking around Pershing can be a problem, so please plan ahead. Only graduates will be allowed to enter the basement prior to the graduation ceremony. Graduates are asked not to bring food or drink into Pershing. There will be a professional photographer in the basement to take a formal picture of any senior who requests one. Before the graduation ceremony, staff members will be going over last minute instructions and checking to be sure each graduate has a cap, gown and tassel. (OVER)

Behavior of Seniors We are expecting that all members of the senior class will show appropriate behavior during the ceremony. Most students and parents do not want a few students or members of the audience to interrupt nor draw attention away from the speakers, singers, or from the senior who is receiving a diploma. We do not want an embarrassing experience for family or friends. We hope that all students and parents will honor the wishes of the majority and help create a “ceremony” that is in keeping with the dignity of the occasion. Students who interrupt the ceremony may be asked to leave the ceremony and/or their diploma may be withheld until a parent conference can be held at a later date. Seating for Individuals with Disabilities Seating for individuals with disabilities has been reserved on the main arena floor on the north side. Any students with family members who need the special seating should stop in at the Counseling Center prior to graduation. We will provide tickets for that area for each person and two additional family members. Seating for Family Members Seating for spectators will be in the balcony. Members of the graduating class and those with tickets to accompany individuals with disabilities will be seated on the arena floor. After seniors have marched into the auditorium, additional seating may be available on the floor. Families who have a number of members attending the ceremony are encouraged to arrive together. We discourage holding or “reserving” a large number of seats for late arrivals. Audience Behavior We ask that family members and other spectators help keep the ceremony in good taste. Horns or other items that might interrupt the graduation are not allowed into Pershing Auditorium. All students deserve to have their friends and family members hear their name as it is read. Students who are performing a song or delivering a speech deserve to be heard by everyone in the audience. There will be no recessional at the end of the graduation ceremony. After the closing, guests are invited to the floor for pictures and to congratulate the new graduates. Distribution of Diplomas The actual diplomas are not presented to graduates on stage during the ceremony. Diplomas are available immediately after the ceremony in the basement of Pershing, after gowns have been returned. National Honor Society members will have a separate table to pick up their diplomas and to return their sashes. If NHS members want to keep their sashes, they will need to bring $18 or pay the LHS Bookkeeper in Room 200R prior to graduation. Students who have not completed all requirements for graduation will not receive a diploma. This includes course requirements, books and equipment returned, and fines paid. Seniors not sure about obligations should check with teachers or with Ann in 200R. Questions? Please call Mike Wortman, Principal, at 436-1544 or email:
