REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Normal Class Load – Because graduation requirements prescribe a minimum of 230 credit hours for sophomores, juniors and seniors and 245 credit hours for freshmen to graduate it is important that you register for the correct number of courses each semester. The maximum number of classes a student can take each semester is eight (40 hours). The minimum course load each semester for freshmen and sophomores is seven (35 hours). See your school counselor if you are in doubt and have questions about the number of classes you should take.

Electives – It is through the wise selection of elective courses that students are able to personalize their educational plan. Elective courses in each academic area provide opportunities for: 1) adding depth and breadth to an intended area of specialization, 2) expanding existing interests and discovering new ones, and 3) providing diversity or a change of pace that can refresh and offer new challenges.

College Preparatory Courses – Students should research the admission requirements for the college/university in which they are interested when registering for their high school courses.

Music – All students are welcome to participate in the Vocal and Instrumental programs. Instrumental music students should pre-register for courses according to grade level and instrument. Registration for an auditioned group does not guarantee placement in the class, but does guarantee a member of the music department will contact the student for an audition. Vocal music students should pre-register for CHORAL MUSIC and will be placed appropriately according to teacher placement outcomes. All students registering for CHORAL MUSIC are guaranteed placement in a vocal music ensemble. Placement in auditioned Instrumental/Vocal ensembles requires yearlong participation.

Athletic Program – Prospective student-athletes who may be potential candidates for an athletic scholarship at a Division I or II NCAA member institution must be aware of the specific “core curriculum” requirements for athletic participation and scholarships. Student-athletes who plan to enroll in a Division I or II institution are required to apply to the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse. Information may be accessed at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net. Athletes, beginning in their freshman year and especially in their junior year, should make educational plans very carefully with the help of parents/guardians and counselors.

eLearning – North Star offers a limited number of classes in the computer assisted eLearning Lab. Students interested in checking the list of available classes or in enrolling or should talk to their counselor in the Counseling Center.

Advanced Placement classes – offer optional examination for college credit. See your counselor or instructor for details.

ECONOMICS: 5 CREDITS

In addition to accumulating the required number of credit hours, students will also be required to demonstrate that they have necessary reading and writing skills. Demonstrations and standards for successful completion of these skill areas will be developed. Demonstrations may be completed in a particular class and/or independent of a class, depending upon how the demonstration is developed. Demonstrations will not grant credit. Reading Graduation Demonstrate the ability to read and comprehend newspapers such as the Lincoln Journal Star and Omaha Demonstration Met World-Herald. Writing Graduation Demonstrate the Knowledge and skills necessary to write a narrative and an expository essay consistent with Demonstration Met state standards.

High School Graduation Demonstration Requirement All students are required to pass graduation demonstrations in reading, and writing, but only 10-12 will have to pass the math graduation demonstration in order to graduate. What are graduation demonstrations? They are evidence that a student has reached an expected high school level of achievement prior to graduation. Options for students in each subject area include passing a graduation demonstration examination, reaching predetermined scores on other tests, or completing coursework. Students begin to have opportunities to pass the demonstrations in ninth grade. All ninth graders must take the Reading and Writing Graduation Demonstration Exams. Students in the special education program should participate according to their IEPs. Students who take the exams will receive a letter for each exam stating whether they have passed it. Passage of the demonstrations is also reflected on semester grade reports. Students who do not pass the exams can retake them in spring and fall each year until they pass the exams or meet the demonstrations through other means.

The reading demonstration verifies students’ vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension skills. Students may meet the requirement in one of four ways:

Pass the Reading Graduation Demonstration Exam (RGDE),

Receive a percentile rank of 70 or more on the Reading Subtest of the Metropolitan Achievement Test (MAT) in ninth grade, Score at or above the 70th percentile rank in the Reading Subtest of the tenth grade PLAN test, or

Pass the Writing Graduation Demonstration Exam (WGDE),

Complete designated writing assignments at a satisfactory level in the Composition Course. The three parts of the writing exam include editing paragraphs (proofreading), writing a story, and writing to explain. A guide for parents/students and a practice test are available.

Receive a C+ or better in “Reading Advancement" which is a senior’s only course. The reading exam consists of three newspaper selections and 30 multiple-choice questions.

Weighted Grades Process Below is an explanation of the system the Lincoln Public Schools Board of Education has implemented for determining class rank. • • • • • • • • • • •

Class rank is calculated by a class rank points system. The weighted grades system will remain the same. The transcript will continue to show a student’s GPA as un-weighted and weighted. Each course that a student takes will be assigned class rank points. This is determined by the grade that the student receives in the course and the number of credit hours earned. (See charts below.) Weighted courses will receive more class rank points that un-weighted courses. Class rank will be determined by the total of a student’s class rank points and will be placed in order from highest total to lowest total. A cap of 280 hours would be placed on class rank points. This cap is figured on a student taking 7 courses for the 8 semesters of high school. If a student has earned more than 280 hours, the courses with the lowest grades and hours would be dropped. These grades will still be figured as part of the student’s GPA. Courses taken pass/fail will not receive any points in the class rank points system. It is possible to have a higher GPA than another student and still be ranked lower because of the number of classes that student has taken. The class rank points system rewards students for taking weighted courses as well as a full schedule of classes.

NCAA DIVISION I & II SCHOOL ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY

Students planning to attend a NCAA Division I or II School, on an athletic scholarship, must meet certain academic requirements. Not all courses at Lincoln North Star qualify as NCAA core courses. Students should consult a counselor and the NCAA Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete to make sure they meet all requirements for graduation and NCAA eligibility. Nebraska Four Year Public Colleges/Universities General Admission Requirements

University of Nebraska: The University of Nebraska system has admission requirements that most students must meet to be admitted to any of its four campuses. These include: • 4 years of English • 3 years of mathematics (4 years at UNL) Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra, and one additional • 2 years of foreign language • 3 years of natural science • 3 years of social sciences Student must rank in the upper half of their senior class or have a minimum ACT composite score of 20 or minimum SAT score of 950. Applications of students who don’t meet all entrance requirements will be reviewed and approved on a case-by-case basis. Some Colleges within the UNL system have more specific entrance requirements.
